1 Installation
In diesem Kapitel finden Sie eine Anleitung für die Installation und Inbetriebnahme des AirLancer WLAN-Adapters. Nach erfolgter Installation von Hardware, Treibern und AirLancer-Software muss noch der Zugang zu einem FunkLAN eingerichtet werden. Diese Konfiguration wird in Kapitel 2 beschrieben.

1.1 Lieferumfang
Bitte prüfen Sie zunächst den Inhalt der Verpackung auf Vollständigkeit. Folgende Komponenten sollten sich im Karton befinden:
쮿 AirLancer USB-54pro, AirLancer USB-300 oder AirLancer PCI-54pro
쮿 USB-Kabel (nur AirLancer USB-54pro und AirLancer USB-300)

1.2 Systemvoraussetzungen
Vor der Installation sollten Sie überprüfen, ob Ihr Rechner die notwendigen
Systemvoraussetzungen erfüllt:
쮿 Windows 2000, Windows XP oder Windows Vista
쮿 CD-ROM-Laufwerk
쮿 Ein freier PCI-Slot (nach PCI-Spezifikation 2.1 oder höher, nur AirLancer
PCI-54pro)
쮿 Eine freie USB-1.1 oder USB-2.0 Schnittstelle (nur AirLancer USB-54pro
und AirLancer USB-300)
An einer USB-1.1-Schnittstelle kann ein AirLancer USB-54pro oder
AirLancer USB-300 nicht die volle Performance entfalten, da diese
Schnittstelle auf einen Durchsatz von maximal 12 MBit/s begrenzt ist.

1.3 Installation von AirLancer USB-54pro und AirLancer USB-300
햲 Stecken Sie die AirLancer USB-54pro oder AirLancer USB-300 während
des PC-Betriebs in eine freie USB-Schnittstelle Ihres Rechners.

Mit dem beiliegenden USB- Kabel können Sie die AirLancer USB-54pro
oder AirLancer USB-300 etwas weiter weg von Ihrem Rechner positionieren und so bei Bedarf den Funkkontakt optimieren.
햳 Windows startet nach dem Erkennen der Hardware automatisch die Trei-
berinstallation. Brechen Sie diesen Vorgang ab, um die Installation über
den Setup-Asistenten von der beiliegenden CD vorzunehmen.
햴 Legen Sie die beiliegende CD in Ihr Laufwerk ein. Daraufhin startet der
Setup-Asistent automatisch.
Sollte das Setup nicht automatisch starten, so rufen Sie die Datei
AUTORUN.EXE aus dem Hauptverzeichnis der beiliegenden CD auf.
햵 Wählen Sie im Setup-Assistenten zunächst den Eintrag „AirLancer-Soft-
ware“, dann den Eintrag für Ihr Produkt und folgen Sie den Hinweisen des
Setup-Programms.
1.4 Installation von AirLancer PCI-54pro
햲 Schalten Sie den PC aus.
햳 Um elektrostatische Aufladungen abzuleiten, berühren Sie kurz das
Metallgehäuse des Rechners. Ziehen Sie anschließend den Netzstecker
auf der Rückseite des PC-Gehäuses.
햴 Lösen Sie die Schrauben und Arretierungen des Rechnergehäuses, und
entfernen Sie die Gehäuseabdeckung.
햵 Für den Einbau der AirLancer PCI-54pro benötigen Sie einen freien PCI-
Steckplatz. Bevor Sie die Karte einbauen, müssen Sie am Gehäuse das
Montageblech des Steckplatzes entfernen.

PCI-Steckplatz
Wenn Ihr PC mit einer AGP-Grafikkarte bestückt ist, sollten Sie nach
Möglichkeit vermeiden, die PCI-Karte in den ersten, neben der Grafikkarte gelegenen PCI-Steckplatz zu montieren. Hierbei könnte es zu
Interrupt-Konflikten zwischen der AGP-Grafikkarte und der PCI-Karte
kommen.
햶 Schrauben Sie die externe Antenne von der PCI-Karte ab.
햷 Setzen Sie die AirLancer PCI-54pro vorsichtig in den freien Steckplatz.
Achten Sie darauf, dass die Karte korrekt sitzt, und verschrauben Sie das
Montageblech mit dem Gehäuse.
햸 Setzen Sie das PC-Gehäuse auf, und verschrauben Sie es.

1.5 Die Konfigurationssoftware für AirLancer-Adapter
Zur Konfiguration der AirLancer-Adapter kann je nach Betriebssystem entweder die integrierte Konfigurationssoftware des Betriebssystems (ZeroConfig)
oder eine spezielle Software verwendet werden – das Atheros Client Utility,
kurz ACU verwendet werde:

Bei der Installation der AirLancer-Treiber unter Windows XP oder Win-
dows 2000 wird das Atheros Client Utility in der Regel mitinstalliert.
Ausführliche Informationen zum Atheros Client Utility finden Sie in der
elektronischen Dokumentation auf der beiliegenden CD.
Soll unter Windows XP das ACU verwendet werden, müssen Sie die im
Betriebssystem integrierte Konfigurationssoftware deaktivieren. Um
dies zu tun, öffnen Sie unter Einstellungen 왘 Systemsteuerung die
Netzwerkverbindungen. Klicken Sie mit der rechten Maustaste auf
die Drahtlose Netzwerkverbindung und wählen Sie Eigenschaf-
ten. Deaktivieren Sie die Software auf der Registerkarte Drahtlose
Netzwerke.

1.6 WLAN-Verschlüsselung
Um die in einem WLAN übertragenen Daten zu schützen, wird in der Regel ein
Verschlüsselungsverfahren verwendet. LANCOM Systems empfiehlt den Einsatz von IEEE 802.11i (WPA2) in Verbindung mit AES, da dieses Verfahren den
derzeit höchsten Sicherheitsstandard für WLANs darstellt. Der verwendete
Schlüssel sollte zufällig aus einem großen Zeichenbereich gewählt und möglichst lang (32 bis 63 Zeichen) sein.

Für die Anmeldung mit einem AirLancer-Adapter an einem LANCOM Wireless
Router oder LANCOM Access Point beachten Sie bitte folgende Hinweise:
쮿 Für unkonfigurierte LANCOM Wireless Router ist standardmäßig eine
Grundverschlüsselung aktiviert (WEP-128). Informationen zum Zugriff
über WLAN auf diese Geräte finden Sie in der jeweiligen Geräte-Dokumentation.
쮿 Bei unkonfigurierten LANCOM Access Points sind die WLAN-Module aus-
geschaltet, die Geräte müssen zunächst über einen LANCOM WLAN
Controller oder manuell konfiguriert werden.
Stellen Sie die Verschlüsselung nach Möglichkeit auf IEEE 802.11i (WPA2) in
Verbindung mit AES ein, um die bestmögliche Sicherheit der WLAN-Verbindung zu erzielen.

1 Installation
The chapter contains instructions for the installation of the AirLancer wireless
LAN adapter. Following the installation of hardware, drivers and AirLancer
software, the access to a wireless network still has to be set up. This
configuration is described in chapter 2.

1.1 Package contents
Detailed information on your AirLancer WLAN adapter is available in
the electronic documentation on the AirLancer 54 Mbit CD.
First of all check that the package contents are complete. The following
components should be in the box:
쮿 AirLancer USB-54pro, AirLancer USB-300 or AirLancer PCI-54pro
쮿 USB cable (AirLancer USB-54pro and AirLancer USB-300 only)
쮿 External 360° dualband antenna (AirLancer PCI-54pro only)
쮿 CD with drivers, the Client Monitor and electronic documentation
If parts are missing, please refer to your dealer.
1.2 System requirements
Before the installation, please check that your computer meets with the
system requirements:

쮿 CD-ROM drive
쮿 One free PCI slot (as per PCI specification 2.1 or higher; AirLancer PCI-
54pro only)
쮿 One free USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 interface (AirLancer USB-54pro and AirLancer
USB-300 only)
A USB 1.1 interface will not permit the AirLancer USB-54pro or
AirLancer USB-300 to operate at full speed as this interface is limited
to a maximum throughput of 12 MB per second.

1.3 Installing the AirLancer USB-54pro and AirLancer USB-300
햲 Plug the AirLancer USB-54pro or AirLancer USB-300 into a free USB
interface while your PC is running.
The USB cable supplied allows you to position the AirLancer USB-
54pro or AirLancer USB-300 further away from your PC so that you
can optimize the wireless signal.
햳 After detecting the hardware, Windows starts the driver installation
automatically. Interrupt this procedure if you wish to carry out the
installation with the Setup Wizard on the supplied CD.
햴 Place the supplied CD into your drive. The Setup Wizard will start
automatically.
If the setup does not start automatically, run AUTORUN.EXE in the
root directory of the supplied CD.
햵 With the Setup Wizard, you first select the entry "AirLancer software",
then the entry for your product. Follow the setup program's instructions.
1.4 Installing the AirLancer PCI-54pro
햲 Switch the PC off.
햳 Briefly touch the computer housing to discharge any static electricity.
Next, disconnect the AC power supply cable from the rear of the PC
housing.
햴 Remove all retaining screws or release the catches for the PC housing and
remove the cover.

햵 A free PCI slot is required for the installation of the AirLancer PCI-54pro.
Before installing the card, remove the blind bracket for the slot you intend
to use.

If your computer is equipped with an AGP graphics board, avoid
installing the network adapter in the PCI slot immediately next to the
graphics board if possible. This may lead to an interrupt conflict
between the network adapter and the AGP graphics board.
햶 Unscrew the external antenna from the PCI card.
햷 Carefully insert the AirLancer PCI-54pro into the free slot. Ensure that the
card is correctly seated in its slot and tighten the screw of the mounting
plate.
햸 Replace the computer case and screw it tight.
햹 Screw the external antenna back on to the antenna connector of the
AirLancer PCI-54pro.
햺 Switch the PC on. After detecting the hardware, Windows starts the driver
installation automatically. Interrupt this procedure if you wish to carry out
the installation with the Setup Wizard on the supplied CD.
햻 Place the supplied CD into your drive. The Setup Wizard will start
automatically.
If the setup does not start automatically, run AUTORUN.EXE in the
root directory of the supplied CD.
햽 With the Setup Wizard, you first select the entry "AirLancer software",
then the entry for your product. Follow the setup program's instructions.
1.5 Configuration software for AirLancer adapters
Depending on the PC's operating system, there is a choice of methods for
configuring the AirLancer adapters. Either the configuration software

integrated into the operating system can be used (ZeroConfig) or a specialized
software can be used, the Atheros Client Utility (ACU for short):

When installing the AirLancer driver under Windows XP or Windows
2000, the Atheros Client Utility is generally included with the
installation. Extensive information on the Atheros Client Utility can be
found in the electronic documentation on the supplied CD.
If you wish to use the ACU in Windows XP, you should deactivate the
operating system's own integrated configuration software. To do this,
click on Settings 왘 Control Panel and access Network
Connections. Click with the right-hand mouse key on Wireless
Network Connection and select Properties. The software is
deactivated on the Wireless Networks tab.

1.6 Wireless LAN encryption
The data transferred over WLAN is generally protected by encryption.
LANCOM Systems recommends the use of IEEE 802.11i (WPA2) in
combination with AES. This method currently offers the highest available
standard of security in wireless LANs. The key should be randomly selected
from the largest possible range of numbers and should be as long as possible
(32 to 63 characters).
To register an AirLancer at a LANCOM wireless router or LANCOM access
point, please observe the following:

쮿 For unconfigured LANCOM wireless routers, a basic WEP128 encryption is
activated as standard. Information on accessing these devices over WLAN
is to be found in the documentation for the relevant device.
쮿 With unconfigured LANCOM access points the WLAN modules are
deactivated. These devices must first be configured either manually or by
a LANCOM WLAN controller.
