*WARNING: Reagents marked with an * are considered to be potential health
hazards. To view or print a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for these
reagents go to www.lamotte.com. To obtain a printed copy, contact LaMotte by
e-mail, phone or fax.
To order individual reagents or test kit components, use the specified code
number.
The sampling period specified in the directions corresponds to
concentrations which may be encountered in ambient air conditions.
High concentrations of pollutants in the atmosphere will require shorter
sampling periods, while low concentrations will require longer sampling
periods.

USE OF THE OCTET COM PARA TOR
The Octet Comparator contains eight permanent
color standards. A test sample is inserted into the
openings in the top of the comparator. The sample
can then be compared to four color standards at
once, and the value read off the comparator. For
optimum color comparison, the comparator should
be positioned between the operator and a light
source, so that the light enters through the special
light-diffusing screen in the back of the comparator.
Avoid viewing the comparator against direct sunlight
or an irregularly lighted background.
USE OF THE ADAPTER ASSEMBLY
This test kit includes an adapter for restricting the flow of air through the
impinging apparatus. The adapter assembly consists of a 27 gauge
hypodermic needle (27336-01) which is fitted into a small plastic holder
(30410). A piece of plastic tubing (23609) is attached to the plastic
holder. By joining one end of the tubing to the intake portion of the
impinging apparatus, the flow of air is restricted to 0.2 Lpm. To sample the
test atmosphere at this rate for nitrogen dioxide, use the following
procedure:
1. Attach adapter to intake of impinging apparatus.
2. Unscrew knob of flowmeter (counterclockwise - 6 complete turns
from closed position of flowmeter).
3. Turn switch to “ON” position. Follow recommended operating
procedure for nitrogen dioxide test.
NOTE: The sampling period should not exceed 20 minutes for a
single determination of nitrogen dioxide when the adapter is in place
as damage might result to the pumping mechanism.

PRO CE DURE
1. Pour 10 mL of *Nitrogen Dioxide #1 Absorbing Solution (7684) into
the impinging tube.
2. Connect impinging apparatus to intake of air sampling pump†. Make
sure the long tube is immersed in the absorbing solution.
3. Attach special adapter to intake of pump to sample at 0.2 Lpm.
Sample for 10 minutes or until a measurable amount of nitrogen
dioxide is absorbed.
4. At the end of the sampling time pour contents of impinging tube into
test tube (0822). Dilute to 10 mL with absorbing solution if necessary
to replace solution which evaporated during sampling.
5. Use the pipet (0352) to add 1 drop of *Nitrogen Dioxide Reagent #2
(7685). Cap and mix.
6. Use the 0.05 g spoon (0696) to add 0.05 g of Nitrogen Dioxide
Reagent #3 Powder (7688). Cap and mix. Wait 10 minutes for full
color development.
7. Place test tube into the Nitrogen Dioxide Comparator (7689). Match
sample color to index of color standards. Record the index number
which gives the proper color match.
8. Use chart below to convert index reading to a concentration. Record
as ppm Nitrogen Dioxide.

For reference analysis of nitrogen dioxide, a gas bubbler impinger (0934)
is recommended. For general applications and demonstration, a general
purpose impinger (0922) or standard midget impinger (0933) may be
used.
