*WARNING: Reagents marked with an * are considered to be potential
health hazards. To view or print a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for
these reagents go to www.lamotte.com. To obtain a printed copy, contact

To order individual reagents or test kit components, use the specified code number.
USE OF THE OCTET COM PARA TOR
The Octet Comparator contains eight permanent
color standards. A test sample is inserted into the
openings in the top of the comparator. The sample
can then be compared to four color standards at
once, and the value read off the comparator. For
optimum color comparison, the comparator should
be positioned between the operator and a light
source, so that the light enters through the special
light-diffusing screen in the back of the comparator.
Avoid viewing the comparator against direct
sunlight or an irregularly lighted background.
NOTE: The following metals interfere above these levels:
Zinc 2 ppm
Nickel 4 ppm
Copper 5 ppm
The following metals produce a purple-brown reaction above these levels:
Iron 5 ppm
Cobalt 25 ppm
If metals above these levels are encountered, the Cyanide Inhibitor Package
(LaMotte Code 7104) must be used.
PRO CE DURE
1. Fill a test tube (0893) to the lower line with sample water.
2. Use 1.0 mL pipet (0372) to add 1.0 mL of *Hardness Buffer Reagent
(4255).
3. Add 2 drops of *Metal Inhibitor (2785). Wait 1 minute.
4. Use 0.5 mL pipet (0369) to add 0.5 mL of *Manganese Indicator
Reagent (3956). Cap and mix. Wait 2 minutes.
5. Use 1.0 mL pipet (0354) to add 2.0 mL (two measures) of
*Chloroform Reagent (6203). Cap and mix vigorously for 30 seconds.
Allow to stand until the two layers separate.
6. Insert the test tube into the Low Range Manganese Comparator
(3594). Match the color of the lower liquid layer with the standards.
It may be necessary to raise the tube to compare against the upper set
of standards. Record as ppm Manganese.
7. Wash the tubes with soap and water after testing to prevent staining.
