USE OF THE OCTET COM PARA TOR
The Octet Comparator contains eight permanent color standards. A test sample is inserted into the openings in the top of the comparator. The sample can then be compared to four color standards at once, and the value read off the comparator. For optimum color comparison, the comparator should be positioned between the operator and a light source, so that the light enters through the special light-diffusing screen in the back of the comparator. Avoid viewing the comparator against direct sunlight or an irregularly lighted background.
PRO CE DURE
FREE AVAIL ABLE CHLO RINE (FAC)
Recommended minimum Free Available Chlorine level in pool water is
1.0 ppm in unstabilized pools; 2.0 ppm in stabilized pools. For bather safety after superchlorination, the maximum level of Free Chlorine is 3.0 ppm.
1. Rinse a test tube (0898) with sample water. Fill to 5 mL line with sample water.
2. Add one *Chlorine DPD #1R Tablet (6999A). Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates.
3. Immediately insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6902). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as ppm Free Available Chlorine.
NOTE: Do not discard this test sample if total residual chlorine is to be determined.
TO TAL RE SID UAL CHLO RINE (TRC)
Ideally, the Total Residual Chlorine should be equal to the Free Available Chlorine reading. Combined Chlorine should not exceed 0.2 ppm.
4. Add one *Chlorine DPD #3R Tablet (6905A) to sample from Step 3. Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates.
5. Insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6902). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as ppm Total Residual Chlorine.
Combined Chlorine ppm =
Total Residual Chlorine _ Free Available Chlorine
pH - PHE NOL RED IN DI CA TOR
Rec om mended op ti mum pH range for pool wa ter is pH 7.2 to pH 7.6.
