PRO CE DURE
1. Fill graduated cylinder (0418) to 50 mL line with sample water.
Transfer to 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask.
2. Add 3 drops of Sodium Thiosulfate, 0.1N (6155). Swirl to mix.
3. Use 1.0 mL pipet (0354) to add 1 mL of *Fluoride Inhibitor
(3929). Swirl to mix.
4. Use the 0.5g spoon (0698) to add one measure of *Xylenol Orange
Reagent Powder. Swirl until powder is dissolved.
5. Adjust pH to between 2.5 and 3.0. Dip one strip of pH paper
(2958) into sample. Match color to a color standard on the side of
the roll. Add *Hydrochloric Acid, 1.0N (6130) drop by drop,
checking pH after each drop until color matches 2.8 standard.
Solution will be yellow.
6. Fill buret (0427) with Thorium Nitrate Solution (6158). While
swirling flask, slowly add Thorium Nitrate Solution until yellow
color just turns pink. Record buret reading as Value A.
7. Repeat Steps 1 - 6 on phosphonate-free water. Record buret reading
as Value B.
8. Subtract Value B from Value A. Multiply by 4. Record as ppm
Phosphonate.
(Value A - Value B) x 4 = ppm Phosphonate
NOTE: This test is calibrated for Dequest 2006 (NaAMP). Other
phosphonate compounds may require a different multiplication
factor. For best results the Thorium Nitrate Solution must be
calibrated against accurately prepared solutions of the compound
being used.
