USE OF THE OC TET COM PARA TOR
L
Mott
The Octet Comparator contains eight permanent color standards. A test sample is inserted into the openings in the top of the comparator. The sample can then be compared to four color standards at once, and the value read off the comparator. For optimum color comparison, the comparator should be positioned between the operator and a light source, so that the light enters through the special light-diffusing screen in the back of the comparator. Avoid viewing the comparator against direct sunlight or an irregularly lighted background.
PRO CE DURE
1. Fill test tube (0230) to 5 mL line with sample water.
2. Dip the end of the plastic rod (0519) into sample water. Touch to a
small piece of Test Paper (2955) to wet paper. Immediately read pH from color chart.
If pH is below 10, add *Sodium Hydroxide, 1N (4004) one drop at a time until pH is between 10.5 and 11.0. Check pH with a piece of Test Paper (2955) after adding each drop.
If pH is above 11.5, lower pH by adding *Hydrochloric Acid, 1N (6130) one drop at a time until pH is between 10.5 and 11.0. Check pH with a piece of Test Paper (2955) after adding each drop.
3. Use the 0.5 mL pipet (0353) to add 0.5 mL of Cyanide Buffer (2850PS). Cap and invert 10 times to mix. Wait 30 seconds.
4. Use a 0.05 g spoon (0696) to add one measure of *Cyanide Cl Reagent (2794DS). Cap and invert 10 times to mix. Wait 30 seconds.
5. Use a second 0.05 g spoon to add one measure of *Cyanide Indicator Reagent (2793DS). Cap and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds. Wait 20 minutes. Solution will turn violet if cyanide is present.
6. Insert test tube into Cyanide Comparator (4417). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as ppm Cyanide.
