PRO CE DURE
1. Fill the graduated cylinder (0418) to the 50 mL line with the sample
water. Transfer to Erlenmeyer flask (0431).
2. Add five drops of *Phenolphthalein Indicator, 1% (2246). Mix. If
solution turns red, proceed to Step 3. If solution does not turn red,
Phenolphthalein (P) Alkalinity is zero.
3. Fill the automatic buret with Sulfuric Acid, 0.02N (6068). While
gently swirling the flask, add Sulfuric Acid, 0.02N until the red color
disappears. Record buret reading as Reading P. If Total Alkalinity is to
be determined, do not refill buret, and proceed to Step 4.
4. Add five drops of Total Alkalinity Indicator (2786) to the colorless
sample from Step 3.
5. Continue titrating with Sulfuric Acid, 0.02N (6068) until the color
changes from blue-green to pink. Record buret reading as Reading T.
6. If only Total Alkalinity is being determined, follow Step 1. Add five
drops of Total Alkalinity Indicator (2786). Fill buret with Sulfuric
Acid 0.02N (6068) and titrate until color changes from blue-green to
pink. Record buret reading as Reading T.
7. Calculate test results:
Phenolphthalein (P) Alkalinity (ppm) = 20 x Reading P
Total (T) Alkalinity (ppm) = 20 x Reading T
