STRONG AL KALI SO LU TION
1. Fill test tube (0970-S) to 5 mL line with strong alkali solution.
2. Add 3 drops of *Phenolphthalein Indicator, 1% (2246). Cap and
mix. Solution will turn red.
3. Fill pipet (0352) with *B-K Alkali Solution A (8362PS). While
gently swirling tube, add *B-K Alkali Solution A one drop at a
time until color changes from red to colorless. Count number of
drops added. Hold pipet vertically.
4. Add 3 drops of Total Alkalkalinity Indicator (2786). Cap and mix.
If solution turns red, no inactive alkalis are present. If solution
turns blue, proceed to Step 5.
5. Continue adding *B-K Alkali Solution A (8362PS) one drop at a
time until color changes from blue to pinkish red. Count number of
drops added. Hold pipet vertically.
CAL CU LA TIONS
ACTIVE ALKALINITY: Multiply number of drops used in Step 3 by
0.1. Record as % Active Alkalinity.
Number of drops used in Step 3 x 0.1 = % Active Alkalinity
INACTIVE ALKALINITY: Multiply number of drops used in Step 5
by 0.1. Record as % Inactive Alkalinity.
Number of drops used in Step 5 x 0.1 = % Inactive Alkalinity
TOTAL ALKALINITY: Add the active alkalinity to the inactive
alkalinity. Record as % Total Alkalinity.
% Active Alkalinity + % Inactive Alkalinity = % Total Alkalinity
CAUSTIC CONTENT: Subtract the inactive alkalinity from the
active alkalinity. Record as % Caustic Content.
% Active Alkalinity - % Inactive Alkalinity = % Caustic Content
