Cart Selection Guide

To select the right utility cart for your operation, consider these questions:

A.

What STRENGTH or LOAD CAPACITY is needed to do the job over time?
Determine the load capacity for the “normal tasks” intended for this cart.
The calculator below is designed to help you. It takes into consideration load weight
and working conditions.

Once you have determined TOTAL LOAD CAPACITY required,
refer to the utility cart section of this
price list - it is organized by load capacity.

More than 1000 lbs. - Extreme Duty Carts. 200 lbs. to 399 lbs. - Medium Duty Carts.
650 lbs. to 999 lbs. - Tough Transport Carts. Less than 200 lbs. - Standard Duty Carts.
400 lbs. to 649 lbs. - Heavy Duty Carts.

B.

What SHELF SIZE is needed and how many?
Choose the size and number of shelves needed to transport the intended loads.

C. What TYPE OF SURFACE will the cart normally travel on?

Rough or uneven surfaces will require large casters/wheels and increased load capacity.

D. Are ERGONOMIC SAFETY FEATURES important to you?

If transport related injuries are an issue, or a worker uses the cart for an an
extended period of time, select a cart with an ergonomic design.

1. What will this cart typically transport ? (That relates to the weight of the load.)
Here are some examples with approximate weights:

• 2 cases of #10 cans of tomato sauce = 98 lbs. • 1 full size pan filled with mashed potatoes = 32 lbs.

• 1 18" x 26" x 8" box with 4 dz. flatware set-ups = 48 lbs. • 2 bus tubs filled with 8 placesettings = 70 lbs.

(Begin the calculator at 100 lbs., even if the weight is less than 100 lbs.)
Estimate the average weight per shelf of the loads the cart will be expected to transport,

and then multiply by the number of shelves.
Add 100 if the load will be dropped onto the top shelf from a height more than 18”.

2. What types of floor surfaces will the cart encounter on a daily basis? (Add all that apply)

If the floor surfaces are only smooth vinyl tile or smooth indoor concrete, no additional.
Ceramic tile or carpet, add 100 to the weight.
Thresholds or uneven outdoor surfaces, add 300 to the weight

3. How many hours per day will the cart be used? (Choose only one.)

If the cart is used less than 3 hours per day, no additional is added.
4-9 hours, add 100
10-15 hours, add 200
More than 16 hours, add 300
