3. Removing and Installing Disks
IMPORTANT INFO: In the event that an individual hard disk fails
in the LaCie 5big Storage Server, contact your LaCie reseller or LaCie Customer Support for technical assistance. If the problem drive was purchased from LaCie and it is within the warranty period, please replace it with a hard drive provided by LaCie. LaCie will not replace a non-LaCie hard drive or any hard drive purchased from a third party.
Please note the following before replacing or adding a hard drive:
✦ Make certain to choose the slot with the problem drive.
✦ The LaCie 5big Storage Server drives may be hot after con-
tinuous use. Please use caution when removing one or more drives from the enclosure.
✦ Use care when inserting or removing more than one disk while
the 5big Storage Server is powered on. If disks are rapidly inserted or removed while the 5big Storage Server is turned on, the system may not function properly or the drives will lose recognition. You must wait at least ten seconds between each insertion or removal of additional disk drives.
Please read the following sections if before purchasing a non-LaCie disk:
3.1. MBR, GPT and the 5big Storage Server Operating System
3.2. Disk Model and Disk Sectors
3.3. Drives with Capacities Greater than 2TB
Please follow the directions in the following sections when installing a non-LaCie disk or replacing a LaCie 5big drive.

3.1. MBR, GPT and the 5big Storage
Server Operating System
Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning has been the hard drive standard for many years. It supports a maximum of four primary partitions with a size limit of 2TB per partition. Due to partition limitations in the face of ever-expanding hard disk drive sizes, Global Unique Identifier Partition Tables (GPT) now allows more partitions with greater capacities. Further, GPT has additional advantages that can enhance performance.
Please note that the 5big Storage Server operating system must run on disks formatted with MBR. If the operating system is stored on mirrored drives, both disks must be formatted with MBR.
However, LaCie supports using data drives formatted with GPT.
Switching from MBR to GPT or, conversely, from GPT to MBR, is not difficult. Please copy all important data to a separate disk before making the change since adjusting the partition table format is destructive:
Right-click on My Computer and choose Manage. From the Man- age window select Disk Management and find your LaCie disk drive. Right-click on the disk number to choose GPT or MBR.
3.3. Drives with Capacities Greater than 2TB
At the time of this writing, disks larger than 2TB are not tested within the 5big enclosure. Please note that LaCie cannot support disks larger than 2TB without evaluating their performance, integrity, and durability. With greater market adaptation, LaCie will incorporate a wider range of drives into its rigorous qualification model. Please go to www.lacie.com for periodic updates on the list of supported LaCie and non-LaCie hard disks for the 5big enclosure.
The RAID configurations in this Technical Brief assume 1TB or 2TB drives. Further, the examples include disks with the same capacity. Administrators are advised to follow the default or recommended configurations within this Technical Brief and to use two to five disks of equal capacity within the enclosure.
You may experience problems when installing unsupported drives in the 5big enclosure. For example, attempting to use one or two 3TB drives in the system mirror. Since the drive(s) must be formatted with MBR to run Windows Storage Server 2008 on the 5big Storage Server, the system only recognizes the first 2TB of storage. The administrator risks losing 1TB to 2TB of storage capacity.
Certainly, larger capacity external drives are recommended when backing up the 5big Storage Server data via the USB 2.0 and eSATA ports. Make certain to format external backup drives with capacities greater than 2TB using GPT.
3.2. Disk Model and Disk Sectors
For optimal performance and to avoid potential conflicts, LaCie recommends that:
✦ non-LaCie drives used in the 5big enclosure are the same
model.
✦ the disk sectors among the 5big enclosure drives are equal.
Please check the specifications of the disk(s) for further information.
IMPORTANT INFO: LaCie cannot guarantee compatibility, per-
formance, or reliability when using non-LaCie disks that have not been tested with the 5big enclosure.

3.4. Removing a Disk Tray
Adding a non-LaCie disk to an empty slot in the 5big Storage Server: The order of disks in the 5big enclosure can be
important. LaCie recommends inserting new drives in the order of the numbered slots, from left to right. For example, if the first slot on the left (Slot 1) contains the sole drive in the enclosure, choose the second slot from the left (Slot 2) for the next drive. See 4. Disk
Numbering for additional information on disk numbering.
1. Use the included drive lock tool to unlock the drive tray. Turn the
lock until it is vertical. (Fig. 01)
2. Place your index finger into the space behind the handle. (Fig.
02)
3. Draw out the drive tray handle and carefully extract it. Please
use caution when removing the drive tray. (Fig. 03).
Adding a non-LaCie drive: Go to 3.5. Fastening a non-LaCie Hard
Disk to the 5big Enclosure Drive Tray.
Installing a 5big disk from LaCie as a replacement or additional storage: Go to 3.7. Insert a Disk.

3.5. Fastening a non-LaCie Hard Disk to the 5big Enclosure Drive Tray
IMPORTANT INFO: Drives sold by LaCie are the preferred choice
for your 5big Storage Server. LaCie disks specially prepared for the 5big enclosure are tested and shipped in a drive tray for easy installation. Additionally, all 5big hard drives include a 3-year warranty. Visit www.lacie.com for more information on purchasing a 5big disk drive.
Please note the following before fastening your non-LaCie hard drive to the drive tray:
✦ Only 3.5” SATA II drives may be used in the 5big enclosure.
Please visit the Support page at www.lacie.com for a list of drives that have been tested by LaCie. LaCie cannot guarantee performance or compatibility with the 5big Storage Server when using non-LaCie drives or drives that have not been tested by LaCie.
✦ Use only the screws supplied in your packaging when fasten-
ing the non-LaCie hard drive to the drive tray (Fig. 04 - 5big
Drive Tray and Four Screws)
✦ To avoid potential problems caused by electrostatic discharge
(ESD), it is recommended that you do not touch the hard drive’s printed circuit board (Fig. 05 - To prevent ESD, avoid
touching the hard drive printed circuit board). As a further
precaution against ESD, please use an anti-static wristband or an anti-static mat to ground yourself when handling the hard drive.

Fastening a disk to the drive tray:
1. Find a suitable work area with adequate space and a flat, even surface.
2. Locate the empty 5big drive tray and four drive tray screws included in your packaging. Do not fasten a disk to a 5big enclosure drive tray with alternative screws. Doing so may damage the drive tray as well as your non-LaCie disk. Make certain that your non-LaCie 3.5” SATA II disk and a Phillips head screwdriver are within reach as well. Please confirm that the head of the screwdriver is the proper size for the drive tray screws provided by LaCie.
3. Place the empty drive tray onto the flat work area. The handle should be on the bottom left, with the lock icon pointing away from you (Fig. 06).
4. With its label side facing up, gently place the hard disk within the drive tray (Fig. 07). The four tray screw slots should be neatly aligned with the disk’s four screw holes. Please note that the printed circuit board will be flat on the work space and the SATA connector facing to the right.
5. Using the Phillips head screwdriver, carefully fasten all four screws into their slots. Do not overly tighten the screws. Doing so may negatively affect the integrity of the screw holes on the drive as well as the threads on the screws (Fig. 08).
6. Go to 3.7. Insert a Disk for details on inserting the disk tray into the 5big enclosure.

3.6. 5big Enclosure Numbered Slots and Disk Trays
For convenience when adding or removing disks, the 5big enclosure drive slots and trays have matching numbers (Fig. 09).
IMPORTANT INFO: The order of disks in the 5big enclosure can
be important. LaCie recommends inserting new drives in the order of the numbered slots, from left to right. For example, if the first slot on the left (Slot 1) contains the sole drive in the enclosure, choose the second slot from the left (Slot 2) for the next drive.
3.7. Insert a Disk
7. Make certain that the replacement or new drive is securely fas-
tened to a drive tray. See 3.5. Fastening a non-LaCie Hard Disk
to the 5big Enclosure Drive Tray if you are adding a non-LaCie
drive.
8. Carefully insert the drive tray into the empty drive slot. You will feel resistance when the drive tray is most of the way in the bay. Gently push the drive tray handle firmly until you feel the drive snap into place. The drive tray handle should be flush with the back of the 5big enclosure.
9. Use the drive lock tool to lock the drive in place.
10. Please read 4. Disk Numbering before configuring the 5big
Storage Server RAID. To begin configuring the RAID go to:
✦ Five Disk Server: 5. RAID - Five Disk Server
✦ Four Disk Server: 8. RAID - Four Disk Server

4. Disk Numbering
The 5big Storage Server uses Windows Storage Server Disk Management to configure RAID. Before reading how to create and repair the RAID arrays, it may be helpful to know how the utility assigns numbers to the physical disks. Please note that disk number assignment in Disk Management differs from the LaCie Hardware Monitor (see Technical Brief: LaCie Hardware Monitor and 4.2. Disk Num-
bering: LaCie Hardware Monitor).
4.1. Disk Numbering: Windows Disk Management
MANUAL NOTE: To best demonstrate disk numbering, this sec-
tion uses the LaCie default configuration of a 5big Storage Server with five disks. The amount of disks as well as the RAID configurations may appear different based upon your 5big Storage Server.
Fig. 10
Fig. 10 illustrates how Windows Disk Management lists the default
5big Storage Server RAID configuration: disk numbers, levels of RAID, and the health of the disks. Fig. 11 shows how the Windows Disk Management numbers correlate with the physical placement of the disks. (See 5.1. Default RAID for further information on the default RAID settings for a five disk 5big Storage Server.)
Please note that each disk takes part in two RAID configurations. For example, approximately 35 GB of Disk 0 is part of a mirror that runs the Windows Storage Server operating system. The remainder of Disk 0 is also one of five drives that make up the Data volume, a RAID 5 array.
During standard operation, the numbering will not change. However, if a disk should fail, the default disk numbering could become confused, especially if the 5big Storage Server is restarted when a disk is missing. Missing could indicate:

In Fig. 12 and Fig. 13, Disk 1 has been physically removed from its slot. Disk Management no longer has a Disk 1 but a Missing disk. The other four disks keep their default number assignments since the 5big Storage Server has not been restarted.
Fig. 12
Due to the way in which Windows assigns drive numbers, LaCie highly recommends troubleshooting and, if necessary, replacing a
Missing disk before rebooting the 5big Storage Server. (See 9. Re-
pairing RAID Configurations for further information on replacing or
repairing a failed or missing disk.) If the system restarts before the
Missing disk is repaired, Windows will reassign numbers to the re-
maining disks based upon their physical order.

In our example, Disk 1 was removed from its slot, becoming the
Missing disk in Windows Disk Management. If the 5big Storage
Server is restarted with the empty slot, Windows will assign new numbers to three of the five drives (Fig. 14 and Fig. 15):
✦ Disk 0 remains Disk 0
✦ Disk 2 becomes Disk 1
✦ Disk 3 becomes Disk 2
✦ Disk 4 becomes Disk 3
The Missing disk will remain on the list until it is manually removed from Disk Management (9.2.1. Removing the Missing Disk).
Fig. 14
Slight confusion could occur when a replacement disk is inserted into the empty slot after the 5big Storage Server reboots (Fig. 15,
b). While the slot once had a disk that Windows recognized as Disk
1 (Fig. 10 and Fig. 11), that number is now taken by another drive
(Fig. 15, c).

When a replacement drive is inserted into the empty slot, Windows assigns the next available number, Disk 4 (Fig. 16 and Fig. 17, b).
Certainly, drive renumbering is not a problem that will impact the integrity of the data. However, it may become difficult to manage and troubleshoot due to the irregular order of the disks. Consider that, in this example, Disk 0 will have to be paired with Disk 4 for the mirrored System volume, disrupting the order seen earlier in Disk Management (Fig. 10).

4.1.1. Recovering the 5big Storage Server Default Disk Order
While not imperative to optimal operation, you can easily recover the 5big Storage Server default drive order by restarting the device. Please make certain that the 5big Storage Server is not being accessed before restarting it.
After the reboot, the Unallocated replacement disk is reassigned, moving from Disk 4 (Fig. 16) to Disk 1 (Fig. 18).

5.1. Default RAID
The default RAID configurations for the 5big Storage Server are based upon the general requirements of an active business that wants to keep data and the server operating system safe. While LaCie believes the default RAID configurations to be suitable for most networks, there may be environments that require an alternative setup. Since any change in RAID for one or multiple volumes will delete data, administrators should consider the solutions that best suit the needs of an office before using the server.
EXAMPLE: A Share (see Technical Brief: Shared Folders) called
Finance Reports 2009 has been created on the volume Data. This
Share contains all important financial documents from the year
2010. Data, by default, is a RAID 5 volume. If an administrator
decides to break up the Data volume in favor of creating mirrored volumes, the Share Finance Reports 2009 and all of its files will be deleted.
rays should read this section if they have five disks installed in their 5big Storage Server. Please see 6. RAID - Two Disk Server, 7. RAID
- Three Disk Server, and 8. RAID - Four Disk Server for information
on alternative disk configurations.
LaCie highly recommends that customers backup all data stored on their professional server. You may use USB 2.0 or eSATA external desktop drives by connecting them to the server ports or backup to a separate network server. If all files on the LaCie server are regularly backed up, the risk of losing data when adjusting RAID configurations is dramatically reduced.

IMPORTANT INFO: Mirroring and RAID 5 provide solid protection
if one drive in their respective volumes should encounter problems. However, LaCie highly recommends backing up the data stored on your professional server regularly in order to guard against worst case scenarios (i.e. accidental data deletion, malicious programs, viruses, etc.). LaCie professional servers include USB 2.0 and eSATA ports to attach desktop drives for use as backup storage. You can also backup your data to another server on the network.

Fig. 20
5.3.1. Boot Order and Creating the Mirror After a Recovery
All Windows Storage Server system files are duplicated on each disk in the mirror. In most instances, when there are two versions of a Windows operating system, the user is prompted to select one as the device boots. Since a monitor and keyboard are required to choose the boot disk, your 5big Storage Server has turned off this option to save the user time when booting the device.
EXAMPLE: By default, the 5big Storage Server boots from the first
disk with an operating system. In this case, that is Disk 0 (Fig. 20). If Disk 0 should experience a problem or the operating system is damaged, the 5big Storage Server will boot from Disk 1 without forcing any action from the user. However, this option will be lost if the user has performed a recovery, reinstalling Windows Storage Server.

In the scenario where Disk 0 fails some time after a recovery, the front LED will blink continuously since it cannot boot from the first drive with an operating system. The administrator may feel a bit inconvenienced by having to connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the 5big Storage Server in order to choose Disk 1 as the boot disk.
To keep the 5big Storage Server boot order, type or copy and paste the following commands into Command Prompt before mirroring the system disk (Go to Start>Command Prompt or Start>Run and type cmd.):

5.6. Volume Activity During a Resynch
5.6.1. Rebooting During a Resynch
Rebooting the 5big Storage Server while Disk Management is Resynching a mirror or RAID 5 volume will not harm the configuration or its data. However, since the process was interrupted, Disk Management will automatically start a new resynch at 0% once the 5big Storage Server has rebooted.
Due to the size of large volumes such as the 5big Storage Server Data (RAID 5), rebooting during a resynch in progress could extend the operation for many hours.
5.6.2. Accessing Data on a Volume that is Resynching
A volume that is in the midst of a resynch may be accessed by workstations on the network. Users can read or write to the volume. However, performance will be degraded while Windows Storage Server is rebuilding the mirror and/or RAID 5.

6. RAID - Two Disk Server
A 5big Storage Server with two drives offers many options for the user, including the RAID configuration. While it is possible to create Spanned disks or a RAID 0 array, LaCie highly recommends mirroring for optimal protection of your data. RAID 0 can offer some speed advantages but data will not be duplicated across both volumes as with mirroring. Users risk losing data if one of the disks should fail.

7.7. Data Volume: RAID 5
1. Launch Disk Management (5.2. Adjusting the RAID). Please note that Disk 0 has the active partition Data (D:). To create the RAID 5 array using Disks 0, 1, and 2, we must have three Un-
allocated partitions. Therefore, the Data (D:) partition will be
deleted before building the RAID 5. Since deleting the volume also removes the files stored on the Data (D:) partition, please back up all data before moving to the next step.
2. Right-click on the Disk 0 Data (D:) partition to select Delete Volume... (Fig. 70).
Fig. 70
3. Two Windows prompts will appear confirming that you wish to delete the volume (Fig. 71 and Fig. 72). If you have backed up all the data stored on the Data (D:) volume, click Yes on both prompts.

8. RAID - Four Disk Server
Four disks within the 5big Storage Server offers plentiful storage as well as additional protection for data. Since the setup is similar to two and three disks configurations, this section will offer references to other chapters.
8.1. Four Disk Suggested RAID Configuration
While it is possible to create Spanned disks or a RAID 0 array, LaCie highly recommends mirroring and RAID 5 for optimal protection of your data. RAID 0 can offer some speed advantages but data will not be protected across multiple volumes as with mirroring and RAID
5. Users risk losing data if one of the disks should fail with RAID 0.
MANUAL NOTE: Users wishing to build or rebuild their RAID ar-
rays should read this section if they have four disks installed in their 5big Storage Server. Please see 6. RAID - Two Disk Server, 7. RAID
- Three Disk Server, and 5. RAID - Five Disk Server for information
on alternative configurations.

must run from its own volume.
✦ Storing data on the sys-
tem volume will impact server performance.
✦ A swap, or paging file
improves server performance by extending the device’s physical memory. The swap file may be created on a non-system volume, acting as virtual memory. See 5.4.2. Cre-
ate the Swap File.
✦ Due to its size, the Swap
volume may be used for applications that are installed on the 5big Storage Server.
✦ The Swap volume may
also be used to create Shares and store data.

9. Repairing RAID Configurations
9.1. Reinserting a Healthy Disk
If you accidentally remove a healthy disk from the 5big Storage Server while it is on, the system must reactivate and resynch the RAID(s). For example, if Disk 1 is not causing errors but has been removed, the System mirror and Data RAID 5 are no longer Healthy. In Fig.
105, the disk that has been removed is Missing. Further, the System
and Data configurations show Failed Redundancy.
Fig. 105
It is a simple procedure to reactivate the RAID when a healthy disk has been removed from an active 5big Storage Server.

1. Reinsert the healthy disk into its slot on the 5big Storage Server
(3. Removing and Installing Disks).
2. Disk Management will recognize the reinserted disk but the
Failed Redundancy persists until the RAIDs are reactivated (Fig.
106).

4. In this example, there is no need to perform the step a second time since Disk Management will rebuild the System mirror and the RAID 5 Data configurations at the same (Fig. 108). Please be patient as Resynching the RAID 5 Data volume will take quite some time.
Fig. 108
9.2. Repairing the System Mirror and RAID 5 After a Disk Failure
You must recreate the System mirror and/or repair the RAID 5 when a disk has failed and you receive a replacement disk from LaCie.
LaCie will not replace a non-LaCie hard drive or any hard drive not purchased from LaCie. Please note that the replacement disk capacity should be equal to the original disk. While you may use a disk with more capacity, RAID configurations only recognize the size of the original disk. This means that the additional capacity of a new disk would be ignored.

1. If it is not open, launch Disk Management (Server Manager > Storage > Disk Management). This example assumes that
the disk has failed and that a replacement from LaCie is available to repair the RAIDs.
2. Note that Disk 1 is Missing and that both the System mirror and Data RAID 5 have Failed Redundancy (Fig. 109). The Swap volume is Healthy since all three of its disks are unaffected by the Disk 1 failure.

9.2.1. Removing the Missing Disk
Disk Management must be told to remove the Missing disk once
Resynching has begun. Follow the easy steps below to delete the Missing disk from the list of drives.
1. If you have not closed Disk Management after following the steps to repair the System mirror and/or Data RAID 5, the Miss-
ing disk will be listed as a member of the Data volume (Fig.
119).

9.2.2. Replacing Disk 0
Replacing and repairing Disks 0 and 1 require the same series of steps. The one difference is how the system will react to a reboot while the System mirror is resynching.
If the 5big Storage Server restarts while Disk 1 is being replaced and resynching, the server will have no problem finding a bootable operating system on Disk 0. However, if Disk 0 is being replaced and the 5big Storage Server restarts during the System mirror resynch, the device will hang. In this unique case, the 5big Storage Server cannot find a bootable operating system on the first logical drive.
If the System mirror resynch is interrupted and the 5big Storage Server hangs, unplug Disk 0 from the back of the unit. With Disk 0 briefly disassociated from the 5big Storage Server, it can find a bootable operating system on Disk 1.
Once the 5big Storage Server has restarted, reinsert Disk 0 and return to Disk Management to finish resynching the System mirror (9.2. Repairing the System Mirror and RAID 5 After a Disk Failure).
9.2.3. Rebooting During a Resynch
Restarting the 5big Storage Server while it is resynching a mirror or a RAID 5 array will not harm data or the integrity of the volume. The sole drawback of rebooting the device during a resynch is lost time. An interrupted resynch does not pick up where it left off once the 5big Storage Server has restarted. Instead, the resynch will start again from 0%.
