1.2 System Components
A typical TracNet 3.0 system includes the following components:
TracNet Server (Supplied)
The server is a powerful computer at the heart of the TracNet
system. Like a router used with a cable modem or digital
subscriber line (DSL) at home, the TracNet server is a network
router that links your computers to an Internet service. The
server also includes a DVB modem and all required software for
enabling the service.
TracVision Antenna (Sold Separately)
The TracVision antenna system provides the downlink path for
receiving high-speed Internet data via the broadband satellite. It
also receives satellite TV signals and maintains a lock on the
satellite while the vessel is docked or underway.
Tracphone F33, F55, or F77 (Sold Separately)
The Tracphone Fleet antenna system provides a return link to the
Internet service provider (ISP) via Inmarsat’s Fleet Mobile Packet
Data Service (MPDS). The system also provides comprehensive
voice, fax, and data communications.
GPRS Modem (Sold Separately)
The GPRS modem allows you to use the cost-effective terrestrial
GSM mobile telephone networks for the TracNet return link
when you are berthed in a marina or cruising in waters within
the GSM coverage area.
Switch (Supplied)
When connected to the server, the five-port switch (manufactured
by Linksys
®
) provides wired Ethernet access to your local
network. Up to four computers, each having a 10/100BaseT
Ethernet LAN port, can link to the system via RJ45 cables
(network interface cards not supplied).

1.3 How the System Works
The TracNet 3.0 system offers two different methods of receiving
Internet data: broadband service and narrowband service.
Broadband Service
• Internet data received by: TracVision antenna
• TracVision antenna tracks: Broadband satellite
How Broadband Service Works:
1. When you visit a web site, download a file, or e-mail a
message, the TracNet server relays your request to the
satellite broadband network operations center using
the Tracphone MPDS or the GPRS modem connection.
2. The requested web page or file is retrieved from the
Internet and is broadcast via the broadband satellite.
3. Your TracVision antenna receives this satellite
downlink and delivers the web page or file to the
TracNet server, which then relays the data to your
networked computer.
Figure 1-2
How Broadband Service Works
Note that while you are using the broadband service, the
TracVision antenna is tracking the broadband satellite. Therefore,
unless the broadband satellite is also the satellite you use to
receive television signals, you will not be able to watch TV while
you’re online using the broadband service.

Narrowband Service
• Internet data received by: Tracphone Fleet antenna
or GPRS modem
• TracVision antenna tracks: TV satellite
How Narrowband Service Works:
1. When you visit a web site, download a file, or e-mail a
message, the TracNet server relays your request to an
ISP using the Tracphone MPDS or GPRS modem
connection.
2. The ISP retrieves the requested web page or file from
the Internet and sends it to the TracNet server via the
same connection. The server then relays the data to
your networked computer.
Figure 1-3
How Narrowband Service Works
Note that while you are using the narrowband service, the
TracVision antenna does not need to track the broadband
satellite. Therefore, you will be able to watch TV on an alternate
TV satellite while you’re online.

2.1 Receiving Satellite Downloads
For your TracNet system to receive broadband satellite Internet
downloads, the TracVision antenna must have a clear line of sight
to the satellite. If your Internet service is intermittent, or the
TracVision antenna cannot find the satellite, check around your
vessel for any objects that could be blocking the signal, such as
trees, other vessels, or buildings.
Figure 2-1
Satellite Blockage
You must also be located within the selected service’s coverage
area in order to receive Internet downloads. To view the TracNet
services’ broadband coverage maps, refer to Appendix B on
page 63.

2.7 Sending/Receiving E-mail
TracNet can send and receive e-mail using any standard TCP/IP
Internet-based e-mail system. Simply connect to the Internet (see
Section 2.5, “Connecting to the Internet,” on page 16) and open your
e-mail application.
If you use a POP/SMTP e-mail system, such as Outlook or
Eudora, you may need to change how you send e-mail via the
TracNet service. This is because the ISP or the corporation that
receives your mail may block “foreign” Internet users from using
their mail servers. (TracNet users are recognized as “foreign” users.)
To overcome this issue, and if you are using Velocity
Acceleration, you may set your “Outgoing Mail Server” to
tnsmtp.kvh.com.
In addition, some ISPs provide web mail access to their mail
servers. Web mail normally works fine via TracNet. Please
contact your service provider for more information, or contact
KVH Technical Support at +45 45 160 180 (Monday - Friday,
8:00 - 16:30 CET) or via e-mail at customersupport@kvh.dk for
assistance.

3. Ensure that the status column indicates that you
are now offline (Connection Status will show “You
are currently offline”). Remember that the status
column data updates only upon refresh. To
manually refresh the screen, click the Refresh
button.
IMPORTANT! In all cases, you MUST click the Disconnect
button, as described above, to disconnect from the Internet.
Simply closing the web browser window, or switching to another
satellite or service, will not disconnect your Internet connection;
you will continue to incur airtime charges.
You are responsible for any airtime
charges incurred if you accidentally
leave your TracNet system
connected to the Internet. To
protect yourself from this potentially
costly event, please keep the
system timeouts enabled (see
“Setting Timeouts for Automatic
Disconnect” on page 21
).
If you disconnect from the
broadband service, control of the
TracVision antenna automatically
shifts to the master receiver (IRD).

3.2 Causes and Remedies for
Common Operational Issues
There are a number of common issues that can affect the
performance of the TracNet system. The following sections
address these issues and potential solutions.
Improper Wiring
If the system has been improperly wired, the TracNet system will
not operate correctly. Refer to the TracNet 3.0 Installation Manual
for complete system wiring information.
Power Not Applied to the Server
If the power cable is disconnected from the server, or if the power
switch on the server’s rear panel is turned off, the server will not
power up when the blue power button is pressed.
Power Not Applied to the TracVision Antenna
If your TracVision antenna is powered off, you will not be able to
use the TracNet broadband service while moving. You will also
be unable to switch between satellites. Always turn on your
TracVision antenna when using the broadband service.
TracNet Service Not Activated
To use the TracNet system, the service must be activated. Your
system should have been preactivated at the factory. If you
suspect that your TracNet system was not fully activated, please
call KVH Technical Support at +45 45 160 180.
Satellite Signal Blocked
Satellite signals can be blocked or degraded by buildings, trees,
other vessels, or equipment on the vessel itself. Refer to
Section 2.1, “Receiving Satellite Downloads” on page 11 for details.
Simply moving the vessel or obstruction should clear the signal.

TracNet 3.0 User’s Guide

Outside the Broadband Service Coverage Area
TracNet will provide broadband Internet access within the
broadband service coverage area. But if you approach the
broadband coverage limits, the signal level will gradually
degrade (to view the broadband service coverage maps, refer to
Appendix B on page 63). If you are outside the broadband coverage
area, try using the narrowband service. This mode uses your
return link (Tracphone system or GPRS modem) for receiving
Internet downloads.
Outside the Return Link Coverage Area
If you are located outside the coverage area for your selected
return link, you will not be able to connect using either
broadband or narrowband service. If you are using a Tracphone
system for the return link, you must be located within the
Inmarsat Fleet service coverage area. If you are using a GPRS
modem for the return link, you must be located within the
coverage area for your chosen GPRS service. If you are using a
Globalstar modem (TracNet 2.0 upgraded system), you must be
located within the Globalstar coverage area.
Security Setting Enabled on Your Computer
If you have a pop-up blocker active on your computer, you will
not be able to view the “Connection Manager” window, which
displays whenever you click the Connect button to connect to the
Internet. Pop-ups must be enabled for you to see status messages
of the connection progress on your computer. Your computer’s
security settings may also block access to certain web sites.

TracVision Antenna Problem
If the TracVision antenna is faulty, you will not be able to receive
high-speed broadband Internet downloads via satellite. To verify
that the TracVision antenna is the problem, check your satellite
TV reception. If you’re unable to receive satellite TV signals from
the same TracVision antenna, refer to your TracVision Owner’s
Manual or Technical Manual for further troubleshooting
instructions.
Local Area Networking Problem (Using WiFi Access)
If your 802.11b/g-configured computers cannot link with the
server via a wireless access, there may be a problem with your
wireless network. To verify that the wireless network
configuration is the problem, connect your computer directly to
the server by following the steps below.
1. Disconnect your wireless access point from the
Ethernet switch.
2. Connect one end of a straight RJ45 cable to a
10/100BaseT LAN port on your computer.
Connect the other end to an available numbered
port on the switch.
3. Restart your computer.
If you are now able to use the system, there is a problem with
your wireless network setup or the wireless access point. Please
refer to the owner’s manual for your 802.11b/g equipment.
Server Connection Problem
If the TracNet DHCP was unable to assign a valid IP address to
your networked computer, your computer will assign a
meaningless default value. As a result, your computer will not be
able to communicate with the server. To fix this problem, first try
restarting your networked computer. If the problem persists,
follow the instructions in the next three sections.
