A. ASSEMBLY OF MOWER WHEELS
1. Set the mower deck assembly on wood blocks so that it is suspended of f the ground.
Note: The operat or c ontrols are on the f r ont of the deck. (Left and right are determined by
looking in the dir ec tion of travel or by standing at the rear of the deck assembly looking
forward.)
2. Install the rear tire assembl ies on the carrier arm assemblies. Remove the hex nut and lock
washer from the rear tire asse mb ly and install the 5/8”x7-1/2” tir e axle bolt thr ough the hole in
the carrier ar m assembly. See figure 1. Secure ass embly with the lock washer and hex nut
provided on t he r ear t i r e ass embly. The rear tires should be offset to the outside of the deck
assembly on both s ides. See fig ure 2.
3. Install the two c ar r ier arm assemb li es in the pivot ar ms, which are located on the mower deck
assembly. Place the assembly so that the caster ed tires are on the f r ont and the fixed t ir es ar e
on the back. See f igure 2. Secure wi t h 1/2" x 3-1/2" hex head b olts and lock nuts provided on
the pivot arms. Mo unt the height ad just screw on the dec k assembly in the hole provided.
Secure with th e 1/2”x1” hex hea d bolt and lock nut pr ovided on the hei ght adjust screw.
Note: Tighten 1/2” x 3-1/2” and 1/2” x 1” hex head bolts unt il just snug. This area needs to
pivot when adjus ting the height . Under tightening can result in exc es sive wear and
flexing. Over tightening will make adjusting the cutting height very diffic ult.
B. INSTALLATION OF TONGUE ASSEMBLY
1. The tongue can be i ns talled either on the left or right caster asse m bly depending on how the
tow-behind mower will be towed. See fi g ure 2. Secure t he hitch pivot on the chosen cast er

operation of t he equipment.
WARNING: Operator should be fa mi liar with all funct ions of the unit.
A. TONGUE CONFIGURATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING: Shut off the engine and al low the mower blades to come to a complete stop
before adjusting the tongue.
The hitching system is designed so that t he r ough c ut mower can be pulled directly behind a tow
vehicle or off s et to the left or r ight. See Figure 4.
Note: When pulling the mower direc tly behind, t he hitch pivot should be fastened on the right
carrier arm for maximum maneuverability. See F igure 2. When pulling the mower in
the offset pos ition the hitch pivot can be fas tened on either the right or left carrier arm.
See Figure 2.

the height adj us t c r anks on both sides of the mower. See Figure 5. Turn the cranks clockwise to
raise the mower c utting height and c ounter-clock wis e to lower the mo w er cutting height.
DANGER: Shut off tow vehicle engine and allow mower blades to stop c ompletely before
attempting to measure the cutting height.
Adjust the mow er as follows:
1. Pull the mower on t o a smooth, level surface.
2. Adjust the mow er evenly from side t o s ide by measuring t o the ground fro m the lower edge of
the mower deck. The desired heig ht will be the distance from the ground to the outs ide lower
edge of the mower dec k plus 1-5/16”. The mower blade cut ting edge is 1-5/16” above the
outside lower edge of the mower d ec k.
Note: If the heig ht adjust cranks do not turn easil y, the pivot bolts holding the c ar r ier arm
assemblies a nd height adjust s c r ew may be too tight. Loosen the pivot bolts slight ly to
allow easier pivoting. Care sh ould be tak en not to loosen too much or excess wear and
flexing may occ ur . Greasing the threads may also allow greater ease in adju s tment.
Note: After lev eling m ower deck, quic k field adjust ment can be complet ed by count i ng crank
turns. Roughly 6 turns will equal 1” of vertical movement.
The adjustment crank may unturn due to vibr ation. This will allow the mowe r ’s c utting height to
change. T he c r ank c an be s ec ur ed by folding it down between the adjustme nt nut tube and the
upper pivot s uppor t. See Figure 6.

C. STARTING ENGINE
WARNING: Set par king brake on tow vehicle.
Attach mower t ongue to tow vehic le.
WARNING: Do not start rough cut mower unless it is att ac hed to the tow vehicle.
Turn on the fuel shut off valv e (red colored rotati ng knob) located inline on the fuel hose. The off
position on the valve is when the red handle li nes up with the “O” s y mbo l.
Set the chok e t o the desired position.
Set the throt t l e at appr ox imately half throttle.
Start engine and allow engine to warm up.
Set engine spe ed at about half throt tle and engage m ower blades clutc h handle. (The clutch
handle is locat ed at the front of t he m ower under the engine.)
Note: Some belt squealing may occur on engagement. This is normal for a manual clutch
engagement des ign.
CAUTION: If the mower’s engine dies while in use, remove the rough cut mo wer f rom the
uncut area befor e at tempting to engage the clutc h. Inspect the blad es for any obstruct ions
that may prevent blade engage m ent. Failure to follow these inst r uc tions may result in
premature clutch and belt failure or a fire.
Adjust engin e s peed to full throt tle.
D. SHUTTING OFF ROUGH CUT MOWER
WARNING: Shift to neutral and set t he parking brake before dis mou nting the tow vehicle.
Slow the engine speed down and dis engage the clutc h handle.
Allow engine to c ool down for a short time before moving the ignit ion s witch to the off position.
Turn off the fuel shut off v alve (red colored rotating knob) located inlin e on t he fuel hose. The off
position on the valve is when the red handle li nes up with the “O” s y mbo l.
E. MOWER OPERATION
DANGER: K eep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from moving parts.
CAUTION: Clean or replace any safety signs t hat are not read able or damaged.
10
WARNING: Remov e all objects from t he wor k area that might be picked up and thr own by
the blades.
WARNING: Do not mow when children and others are aro und.
WARNING: Do not f ill fuel tank while engine is running or hot.
WARNING: Keep all safety shields and deflector s in place during operation.
CAUTION: Remove grass build up from under safety shields before each use. Do not
remove safety shields while engine is runni ng. Dry grass build up around be lts and
sheaves can cause fires.
WARNING: Shut off engine before disconnecting the mower from the tow vehicle or
attempting to move the wing mower by hand.
WARNING: Never c ar r y children or pass engers.
WARNING: Do not allow children t o oper ate this machine.
CAUTION: Slow down and watch the ends of t he m ower when making turns so object s
are not struck and/or run over .
WARNING: Look down, to the sides, and behind before and while backing to avoid
backing over s om ething or someone. Care should also be taken whil e bac king so that the
wing mower or mowers do not jackknife and damage hitches .
WARNING: Stop the mower blades on the mower if the tow vehicle become s s tuck or
stops going for ward because of los s of traction. Shut off the engine on t he mower befor e
attempting to push or pull the t ow vehicle.
Listen to the rough cut mower engine while mowi ng. The engine should run free and not wor k too
hard. Work ing the engine too hard will cause ov er heating and pr em ature failur e.
CAUTION: If the mower’s engine dies while in use, remove the rough cut mo wer f rom the
uncut area befor e at tempting to engage the clutc h. Inspect the blad es for any obstruct ions
that may prevent blade engage m ent. Failure to follow these inst r uc tions may result in
premature belt failure or a fire.
Do not allow material to build up on the air inlet to the engine cooling system . Special care should
be taken to mak e sur e the engine is g etting enough inlet air. Do not all ow t he engine cooling fins
under the shroud to be block ed. If air flow over the engi ne is r es tricted, the engine could
overheat.

F. DRIV E BE L T REMOVAL AND TENSIO N – Ref er t o Figure 7
WARNING: Shut off engine and allow mower blades to stop turning before making any
adjustments or r epairs.
Remove the saf ety shields.
Loosen the nuts on t he spring-lo aded idler; adj us t bolt until the belt can be slipped off the idler an d
drive sheav es .
Slip the belt down under the drive sheave and of f the blade spindle s heaves.
Install the ne w belt and then adjust the tension as follows: See Figure 7. Take s pec ial c are to
make sure that t he belt is placed bet ween the brake stud and the idler pulley.
With the clutc h engaged, adjus t the nuts on the s pr i ng-loaded idler adjuster b olt until the length of
the spring is bet ween 2-3/8” and 2-1/2”. This is the initial belt break in s pr ing length. W hen the
belt is broken in af ter several ho ur s of mowing, the running spring length should be between 25/8” and 3-1/8”. For maximum belt life, periodic checks every 3-4 hours should be done to make
sure the spring length has not exc eeded the recommended running length.
Note: Failure to periodically adj us t the belt tension will result in severe belt wear and
premature belt failure.
This model comes with a belt brak e, which is a safet y feature that stops the blades fr om turning
after the clut c h is dis engaged. T he only time the brak e s hould be in contact with the belt is when
the clutch is disengaged.
CAUTION: The brake s tud must be adjusted. If t he br ake stud is not adjusted corr ec tly,
the blades will s till spin even t hough the clutc h m ay be in the disengaged position. Always
shut mower engine off before servicing.
Periodic brake stud inspect ions s hould be perf ormed every 10 hour s . In more severe cutting
conditions, m or e frequent ins pec tions may b e necessary. There are two part s t o ins pec ting the
brake stud. T hos e two inspections are the disengaged spring length and brak e s tud clearance.
Note: It is quicker t o per form the disengaged spring length and brak e s tud clearance
inspections if done simultaneously.
Disengaged Spring Length:
This inspect ion must be performed to make sure t hat there is proper braking force to prevent the
blades from spinning when the c lutch is in the disengaged position. Wit h the clutch in the
disengaged p os ition measure the spring lengt h. The spring must be between 3-1/4” and 4” to
provide the ap pr opriate braking force. If t he s pr ing length is to long it will be necessary to adjust
the brake st ud c los er t o the belt. If the s pr ing length is to short it will be nece s s ar y to adjust the
brake stud f ur ther away from the belt . To make brake s tud adjustments lo osen the bolt on the top

is achieved, t ighten the bolt o n t he top of the brake stud. For this pr oc edure do not adjust the
spring lengt h. The spring length s hould only be changed when adj us ting the belt tens ion.
Brake Stud Clearance:
This inspect ion is necessary to prevent over-braking. With the clutch engaged, check t o make
sure that there is at least 1/2” of clearance between the brake st ud and the belt. If t he cl ear ance
is less than 1/2” t hen it will be necessary to adjust t he br ake stud away from the belt. Keep in
mind that the disengaged spring length must s tay between 3-1/ 4” and 4”.
CAUTION: If brake stud is not set in correc t position, under-braking or over-brak ing m ay
occur. If ov er -br aking occurs, premature belt fai lure or a possible fire could oc c ur due to
excessive f r ic tion and overheat ing.

G. MOWER BLADE REMOVAL, BALANCING & INSTALLATION
CAUTION: Sharp blades can cause bodily injury if not hand led properl y.
When removing t he blade, it is r ec om me nded that a block of wood be placed between the bl ade
and the unders ide of the mower deck. This will allow t he removal of the blade without the need to
hold the blade b y ha nd.
CAUTION: Always balance the mower blades each time the y are sharpened.
Out of balance mower blades caus e excess vibr ations which lead to premature bearing failur es ,
bolts coming loose, and overall deterior ation of the wing mo w er s .
CAUTION: Always properly tighten the blade bolts t o the specified t or que. Failure to do so
can lead to unwant ed loosening of the blade and damage to the blade holding s addle.
The Model MR55B uses the Kun z Engineering Part # (202141) blade bolt. This par ticular hex
head bolt is a 3/4” – 16NF x 1-1/4” long, gr ade 5 and it’s proper torque is 300 f t-lbs.
To ease in the blad e installation process , use the same block of wood and method used during
the removal of the blades.
H. LUBRICATION
There are three lubricatio n points on the roug h c ut mower -- one spring-l oaded idler pivot and
two caster whe el pivots. Lubricate at approxi mately 10 hr. intervals or more often as required in
dusty condit ions .
I. STORAGE
Turn off the fuel shut off valve (r ed col or ed r ot ating knob) loc ated inline on the fuel hose. The off
position on the valve is when the red handle li nes up with the “O” symbol. If the mower is stored
outside, the e ngine should be covered to prevent water fr om getting inside the engine during
heavy rainstorms. See the Engi ne Manual for addit ional infor mat ion.
J. EP A EVAPORATIVE COMPONENTS
This mower has been designed and built to meet all c ur rent EPA regulations. Any modif ic ation to
the fuel tank , fuel lines, vapor hos e, fuel cap, roll-over / f uel vapor valve, c arbon canister
