1.1 Factors Affecting Quality of Results
There are many factors affecting the quality of results when signals are transmitted from a source to an acceptor
which are described in Table 1:
Table 1: Factors Affecting Quality of Results
FACTOR
Connection cables
Sockets and
connectors on the
sources and
acceptors
EFFECT
Low quality cables are susceptible to interference; they degrade
signal quality due to poor matching and cause elevated noise
levels. They should therefore be of the best quality.
So often ignored, they should be of highest quality, since "Zero
Ohm" connection resistance is the objective. Sockets and
connectors also must match the required impedance (75ohm in
video). Cheap, low quality connectors tend to rust, thus causing
breaks in the signal path
Amplifying circuitry
Distance between
sources and
acceptors
Interference from
neighboring
electrical appliances
Must have quality performance when the desired end result is
high linearity, low distortion and low noise operation
Plays a major role in the final result. For long distances
between sources and acceptors, special measures should be
taken in order to avoid cable losses. These include using higher
quality cables or adding line amplifiers.
These can have an adverse effect on signal quality. Balanced
audio lines are less prone to interference, but unbalanced audio
should be installed far from any mains power cables, electric
motors, transmitters, etc., even when the cables are shielded

HOW DO I GET STARTED?
The fastest way to get started is to take your time and do everything right the first time. Taking 15 minutes to
read the manual may save you a few hours later. You don’t even have to read the whole manual. If a certain
section doesn’t apply to you, you don’t have to spend your time reading it.
UNPACKING AND CONTENTS

4.1 Optional Accessories
The following accessories, which are available from Kramer, can enhance implementation of your machine. For
information regarding cables and additional accessories, contact your Kramer dealer.
VS-5x4 - (5x4 Video/ Stereo Audio Matrix Switcher) can be serially connected between sources and the PIP200 for video and audio input switching. The VS-5x4 may also be used as one 1:4 or two 2:2 Y/C-video/audio
DAs or any other combination as well. The VS-5x4 switches during the vertical interval for smooth
transitions between genlocked sources. It is microprocessor and RS-232 controlled (software included), and is
operated by touching a keypad on the front panel. Front switches control the audio level of each output. Large
illuminated seven segment LED displays show the connection status of the machine at any given moment.
VS-4x4YC- (4x4 Composite/YC/Audio matrix) can be serially connected between the PIP-200 and its sources
or between the PIP-200 and the acceptor. The Kramer VS-4x4YC is a high performance 4x4 vertical interval
matrix switcher for composite and/or s-Video and stereo audio signals. It is a true matrix, allowing the user to
route any input to any or all outputs simultaneously. Since the VS-4x4YC switches during the vertical
interval, transitions are glitch-free when sources share common reference sync. The VS-4x4YC provides
composite video and
but composite video sources need to be routed to composite video outputs and s-Video sources must be routed
to s-Video outputs. It is important to note that the VS-4x4YC does not perform si gnal format conversion. Like
most Kramer switchers, the VS-4x4YC can be controlled by front panel buttons or RS-232 serial commands.
For applications requiring remote control via a Windows-based personal computer, K-Switch software is
provided at no additional cost. It is easy to use, dependable, rugged, and fits in one vertical space of a standard
19” rack.
VM-1411 (Video/Balanced Stereo Audio Distribution Amplifier) can be serially connected between the PIP200 processor and the acceptors for video and audio distribution. It is a full broadcast, state-of-the-art
machine, designed for studio and other applications. The VM-1411 has two inputs, video and audio, each
splitting to 5 outputs. The u ser may select 2 x 1:5 or 1:10 operation via fron t panel control switches. Several
VM-1411 units may be chained through the looping inputs. Output signals are (user selectable) DC or AC
coupled for maximum flexibility. Audio outputs are buffered and isolated from each other, allowing Hi-Fi
Balanced audio distribution.
SP-11 - (Video/Audio Processor) can be serially connected between the video/audio source and the PIP-200
processor for video and audio control/correction. The machine provides camera control and luminance/white
balance correction. The SP-11 is also capable of performing composite to Y/C conversion and bi-directional
transcoding. The machine allows full control over the video signal: video gain down to full fade, log or linear
definition control, log or linear contrast control, color saturation control, black level control, red, green and
blue controls and a screen splitter control for “before-after” comparison.
VIDEO TESTER - A unique, patented, indispensable tool for the video professional, the video Tester is used
to test a video path leading to/from an amplifier, switcher or processor. By pressing only one touch switch it
can trace missing signals, distinguish between good and jittery (VCR sourced) signals, and identify the
presence of good signals. Whenever a video signal is missing, because of bad connections, cable breaks or
faulty sources, the video Tester is all you need.
s-Video connectors allowing it to be used for either format. Mixing formats is possible

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PIP-200
The KRAMER PIP-200 is a Multi-Standard Picture in Picture Video Inserter designed for studio and other
applications for monitoring and special effects generation. Front panel switches control the size of the inserted
picture (1/4, 1/9, 1/16 or 1/36th of the screen), its position, its border color and matte color and they can also be
used to freeze the inserted picture. The user can flip between the inserted and background image, with a key or
wipe effect. A single color can be displayed instead of the background video source and the user can flip
between the inserted picture and the background image, using a front panel switch. Additional features of the
PIP-200 include the ability to insert an NTSC image into a PAL background and vice versa. When turned off,
the machine saves its settings in an internal EEPROM, recalling them when it is turned on again. The encoder's
power up settings (PAL, NTSC, NTSC4.43) can be selected via internal jumpers inside the machine. Control of
the machine is also possible via its RS-232 port with the software which is provided with the machine.
Front/rear panel features of the PIP-200 are described in Figure 1, Table 2 and Table 3.
