3 Overview
The Kramer VP-6AHD is a high performance distribution amplifier for computer graphics (up to and exceeding UXGA resolutions) and HD signals (high definition resolutions: 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p), as well as audio signals. The VP-6AHD accepts:
One computer graphics input: provides correct buffering and isolation,
and distributes the signal to six outputs on 15-pin HD connectors, and one twisted pair output
A stereo audio input signal: either1 an unbalanced stereo audio input
signal on a 3.5mm mini jack, or a balanced stereo audio input signal on a 5-pin terminal block connector. The VP-6AHD outputs 12 stereo audio signals simultaneously: six unbalanced stereo audio signals on 3.5mm mini jacks, and six balanced stereo audio signals on 5-pin terminal block connectors. If the selected audio input is unbalanced, it is converted to balanced stereo audio; if the selected audio input is balanced, it is converted to unbalanced stereo audio
The VP-6AHD can:
Power the receiver over the same CAT 5 cable Be used with the TP-122 XGA / Audio Line Receiver (converting the CAT
5 signal to XGA, stereo analog and S/PDIF digital audio outputs) or with the TP-120 XGA Line Receiver (converting the CAT 5 signal to an XGA output)
In addition, the VP-6AHD features: A video bandwidth of 500MHz that ensures transparent operation at all
graphics resolutions
Switches on the underside for ID Bit control and sync polarity Front panel controls for UXGA equalization, as well as left and right
audio level controls
A transmission range of more than 300 ft. (more than 100 meters) over
UTP cabling

3.1 About the Power Connect Feature
The Power Connect feature lets you power a transmitter / receiver system by connecting just one power adapter—to either the transmitter or the receiver.
The other unit is fed via the cable connecting between the transmitter/receiver. The Power Connect feature applies as long as the cable can carry power. The distance does not exceed 50 meters on standard CAT 5 cable, for longer distances, heavy gauge cable should be used1.
For a CAT 5 cable exceeding a distance of 50 meters, separate power supplies should be connected to the transmitter and to the receiver simultaneously.
3.2 Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) / Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
We recommend that you use shielded twisted pair (STP) cable. There are different levels of STP cable available, and we advise you to use the best quality STP cable that you can afford. Our STP skew-free cable: Kramer BC-SXTP, is intended for transmitting VGA signals; our non-skew-free cable: Kramer BC-STP, is intended for digital signals. The compliance to electromagnetic interference was tested using STP cables, therefore we recommend using those cables.
Although unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable might be preferred for long range applications, the UTP cable should be installed far away from electric cables, motors and so on, which are prone to create electrical interference. However, since the use of UTP cable might cause inconformity to electromagnetic standards, Kramer does not commit to meeting the standard with UTP cable.
3.3 Recommendations for Achieving the Best Performance
Achieving the best performance means:
Connecting only good quality connection cables, thus avoiding
interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor matching, and elevated noise levels (often associated with low quality cables)
Avoiding interference from neighboring electrical appliances that may
adversely influence signal quality, and positioning your Kramer VP-6AHD away from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust

5 Installing the VP-6AHD in a Rack
This section describes what to do before installing in a rack and how to rack mount.
Before Installing in a Rack
How to Rack Mount
Before installing in a rack, be sure that the environment is within the recommended range:
Operating temperature range +5º to +45º C (41º to 113º F)
Operating humidity range 10 to 90% RHL, non-condensing
Storage temperature range -20º to +70º C (-4º to 158º F)
Storage humidity range 5 to 95% RHL, non-condensing
CAUTION!!
When installing on a 19" rack, avoid hazards by taking care that:
1. It is located within the recommended environmental conditions, as the operating ambient temperature of a closed or multi unit rack assembly may exceed the room ambient temperature.
2. Once rack mounted, enough air will still flow around the machine.
3. The machine is placed straight in the correct horizontal position.
4. You do not overload the circuit(s). When connecting the machine to the supply circuit, overloading the circuits might have a detrimental effect on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Refer to the appropriate nameplate ratings for information. For example, for fuse replacement, see the value printed on the product label.
5. The machine is earthed (grounded) in a reliable way and is connected only to an electricity socket with grounding. Pay particular attention to situations where electricity is supplied indirectly (when the power cord is not plugged directly into the socket in the wall), for example, when using an extension cable or a power strip, and that you use only the power cord that is supplied with the machine.
To rack-mount a machine:
1. Attach both ear brackets to the machine. To do so, remove the screws from each side of the machine (3 on each side), and replace those screws through the ear brackets.
2. Place the ears of the machine against the rack rails, and insert the proper screws (not provided) through each of the four holes in the rack ears.
Note that:
In some models, the front panel
may feature built-in rack ears
Detachable rack ears can be
removed for desktop use
Always mount the machine in the
rack before you attach any cables or connect the machine to the power
If you are using a Kramer rack
adapter kit (for a machine that is not 19"), see the Rack Adapters user manual for installation instructions (you can download it at: http://www.kramerelectronics.com)

The example in Figure 3 illustrates how to output a computer graphics signal (and audio) from a computer to up to six local monitors, as well as how to transmit it over UTP cabling to a TP-122 XGA / Audio Line Receiver.
To connect the VP-6AHD and a TP-122, do the following:
1. Connect a computer graphics source (for example, a computer) to the UXGA INPUT 15-pin HD connector and to the UNBAL. AUDIO IN
3.5mm mini jack, for example, using a Kramer C-GMA/GMA cable1. Press the IN SELECT button2.
2. Connect the UXGA OUTPUT 15-pin HD connectors to up to3 six acceptors (for example, Local Display 1 to Local Display 6).
3. Connect up to3 12 stereo audio outputs4, that is, up to six:
Unbalanced stereo audio OUT 3.5mm mini jacks, and Balanced5 stereo audio 5-pin terminal block connectors (see section 6.1)
4. Connect6 the CAT 5 RJ-45 LINE OUT connector7 to the LINE IN RJ-45 connector on a Kramer CAT 5 receiver, such as the TP-122 unit.
5. Connect the power cord8 to the VP-6AHD (not illustrated in Figure 3).
6. On the VP-6AHD: Adjust9 the UXGA cable compensation equalization level and/or the
audio level, if required
Set the ID BIT switches 4 and 11 on the underside to ON (by sliding
them to the left). This would enable a notebook or laptop (if connected instead of a computer) to output an UXGA signal to an external VGA monitor
1 XGA 15-pin HD(M) +Audio jack to XGA 15-pin HD(M) +Audio jack (not supplied). The complete list of Kramer cables is
on our Web site at http://www.kramerelectronics.com. Alternatively, you can connect an XGA source to the XGA INPUT 15-
pin HD connector, and a separate audio source to the UNBAL. AUDIO IN
2 Alternatively, connect a computer graphics source to the INPUT 15-pin HD connector, and a balanced stereo audio source to
the BAL. AUDIO INPUT 5-pin terminal block connector, and release the IN SELECT button
3 When not all outputs are required, connect only the outputs that are required and leave the other outputs unconnected
4 Note, that if the selected audio input is unbalanced, it is converted to balanced stereo audio; if the selected audio input is
balanced, it is converted to unbalanced stereo audio
5 By wiring the balanced outputs as unbalanced (see Figure 5) you can output 12 unbalanced stereo audio outputs
6 Via UTP cabling, with a range of more than 300ft (>100m): see section 6.1
7 The TP-122 (or TP-120) may be powered via this connector (instead of via the 12V DC external supply)
8 We recommend that you use only the power cord that is supplied with this machine
9 Use a screwdriver to carefully rotate the trimmer, adjusting the appropriate level
Page 11

If necessary, slide the VS and HS switches to the right to output
negative sync polarity (or leave them in the left position (Normal) to retain the sync polarity)
7. On the TP-122: Connect the XGA OUT 15-pin HD connector to the XGA acceptor
(for example, a display), and connect the AUDIO OUT S/PDIF RCA connector to the digital audio acceptor (for example, an AV Receiver), and the ANALOG 3.5mm mini jack to the analog audio acceptor (for example, a stereo audio recorder)
Adjust1 the video output signal level and/or cable compensation
equalization level, if required
If necessary, set the H SYNC and V SYNC switches2, on the underside
