3 Overview
The FC-331A SD/HD-SDI to HDMI/Audio Converter is a high- performance format converter for SDI (SMPTE 259M), HD-SDI (SMPTE 292M), and 3G HD-SDI (SMPTE 424M) signals. It converts an SDI audio and video signal to an HDMI output signal with the same resolution and frame rate
1
and de-embeds the audio signal to balanced stereo line outputs.
The FC-331A features:
One SD/HD/3G HD-SDI input on a BNC connector
Two SDI loop outputs on BNC connectors
One HDMI output
HDTV compatibility
Four-channel balanced stereo audio outputs on both XLR and
terminal block connectors. You can connect all eight connectors at the same time, just one type of connector, or a mixture of both
Automatic active input LED indicators on the front panel. Green
indicates a standard definition (SDI) input signal and blue indicates a high-definition (HD-SDI) input signal

3.1 About HDMI
High
-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an uncompressed
all-digital
2
audio/video interface, widely supported in the entertainment and home cinema industry. It delivers the highest high-definition image and sound quality. Note that Kramer Electronics Limited is an HDMI Adopter and an HDCP Licensee.
In particular, HDMI

Is backward-compatible with DVI (Digital Visual Interface)
Supports two-way communication between the video source (such
as a DVD player) and the digital television, enabling new functionality such as automatic configuration and one-button play
HDMI has the capacity to support existing high-definition video formats (720p, 1080i, and 1080p/60), standard definition formats such as NTSC or PAL, as well as 480i and 576i.
3.2 Recommendations for Best Performa nce
To ac
hieve the best performance:
Use only good quality connection cables
4
to avoid interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor matching, and elevated noise levels (often associated with low quality cables).
Avoid interference from neighboring electrical appliances that
may adversely influence signal quality and position your Kramer FC-331A away from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust

5 Connecting the FC-331A
To connect the FC-331A, as the example in Figure 2 illustrates, do the following
1
:
1. Connect a digital video source (for example, a digital video player) to the SD/HD-SDI IN connector.
2. C o n n e c t t h e SD/HD-SDI LOOP OUT 1 connector to a digital acceptor (for example, a digital display
2
).
3. Connect the HDMI OUT c onnector to an HDMI plasma display.
4. Connect the balanced AUDIO OUTPUT connectors (either the XLR connectors on the front panel or the terminal block connectors on the rear panel) to up to four cha nnels of a bala nced line-i n device (for e xample, a non-linear editor).
5. Using a small screwdriver, turn the SDI AUDIO GROUP SELECT rotary switch to select an SDI stereo channel
3
from 0 to 7.
6. Connect the 5V DC power adapter to the power socket and connect the adapter to the mains electricity (not illustrated in Figure 2
).
1 Switch OFF the power on each device before connecting it to your FC-331A. After connecting your FC-331A, switch on its power and then switch on the power on each device 2 You can connect both LOOP OUT connectors to two digital acceptors 3 SDI audio is made up of 16 channels of audio information or 8 stereo pairs. Whereas most other devices access a group of 2-pairs, the FC-331A accesses a single pair out of a group for higher discrimination
