SI1x6
SI1x6m
Six room speaker-stereo interface
Installation instructions
Warning: To be installed and/or used in accordance with
appropriate local electrical codes and regulations.
Description: The Knöll SI1x6 and SI1x6m six-channel
speaker-stereo interfaces can safely power two to six rooms
of stereo speakers from one stereo amplifier or receiver.
Speakers can be similar or dissimilar and each will sound their
best. These stereo interfaces can be used with and without
stereo room volume controls. Parallel or series speaker wiring
is acceptable. Maximum power input is 200 watts per channel.
The SI1x6 and SI1x6m feature an incredible "ultra" music
quality frequency response of DC to 500,000 Hz +/-0.1dB at
all power levels up to 350 watts due to its transformer-free
topology.
The SI1x6m is identical to the SI1x6 with six added on-off
switches so speakers in various rooms can be individually
turned on and off as desired from the SI1x6m location.
The WIN600 is an in-wall version of the SI1x6.
Depending on the quantity and type of speakers chosen, the
SI1x6 may offer the amplifier impedance as low as 4 ohms,
so we suggest that your amplifier (or receiver) be rated for
4-ohm (or lower) operation. The SI1x6 or SI1x6m is usually
stacked with the stereo equipment and does not need a power
supply.
Basic System Layout and Pre-Wiring: The SI1x6 or SI1x6m
is usually stacked with the stereo equipment. It may get warm
or a bit hot, so it needs ventilation for maximum power and
longest life. Don’t cover or block the vent holes. Take care to
mount it away from anything that can be damaged by heat.
From each speaker run a fire rated two-conductor speaker
wire, ideally 16 gauge or larger for runs up to 33’ (10m) and 14
gauge or larger for longer runs to the SI1x6 or SI1x6m stereo
interface (or volume control then to the interface). To save
time and money, many installers run a four-conductor speaker
wire from the volume control to the stereo interface. If there
is more than one pair of speakers connected to a single SI1x6
room connection, wire the speakers in series or parallel
whichever makes the impedance closest to 4 or 8 ohms.
Do not attempt to make the final combined
speaker impedance less than 4 ohms.
If the SI1x6 is not located
next to the stereo, run a single
fire rated four-conductor (or
two two-conductor) 14-18-

CAUTION:
MAY BE WARM
OR HOT
The SI1x6 uses independent
floating grounds so bridged amplifiers can be used safely.
Connection to Speakers: Remove the remaining SI1x6 fourposition speaker connectors. Connect the speakers or volume
control inputs to any of the six connectors labeled “ROOM”
again strictly observing polarity. Check out or web site

for information on series and parallel
speaker wiring.
Note: For best sound quality always use Knoll 100%
transformer-free stereo volume controls such as the VC100,
VC100ss or VS100 in each room.
Operation: The Knöll SI1x6 is completely automatic and does
not need any user adjustments after installation. The SI1x6m
can turn rooms of speakers on and off as desired in any
combination.
