2 About R1 digireader
2.1 Design concept
The R1 digireader is an eBook reader running on Android 2.1.
2.2 Controls
2.2.1 Physical Buttons
The R1 digireader provides seven control buttons, which are “POWER”, “HOME”, “BACK”, “MENU”, “VOLUME UP”, “VOLUME DOWN”, “RESET”, “ARROW<” and “ARROW>”
POWER: Pressing and holding this button for two (2) seconds will open a dialog box prompting you if you want to shut down the system. And used to wake up system when system in Standby mode.
HOME: Pressing this button whenever you want to switch back to the home screen. Press and hold will show running processes.
MENU: Pressing this button will open the function menu of the active application. BACK: Pressing this button during any operation will send you back to the previous menu. VOLUME UP: Pressing this button can tune up the audio volume. VOLUME DOWN: Pressing this button can tune down the audio volume. RESET: Pressing this button will reboot the system. ARROW<: Pressing this button will go to next page when reading or view. Press and hold will
turn back page by page. ARROW>: Pressing th is button will go to previous page when reading or view. Press and hold
will turn forward page one by one.
2.2.2 Touch Gesture
The R1 digireader can detect and recognize following touch gestures as shown below:

Press:This is the most useful gesture, requires only a single tap on the tou ch panel, and is frequently used to select an option. The detectible minimum area for an effective press is 1.0 cm x1.0 cm.
Long-press: Press and hold y our finger on the panel for 2 to 3 seconds – this is one long -press gesture. The detectible minimum area for this gesture is 1.0 cm x1.0 cm.
Slide-down:Put your fingers on the panel softly, slide it down at least 2cm, and lift it from the panel – this is one slide-down gesture.
Slide-up: Put your fingers on the panel softly, slide it up at least 2 cm, and lift it from the panel – this is one slide-up gesture.
Slide-left: Put your fingers on the panel softly, slide it to left at least 2cm, and lift it from the panel – this is one slide-left gesture.
Slide-right:Put your fingers on the panel softly, slide it to right at least 2cm, and lift it from the panel – this is one slide-right gesture.
2.3 Input Method / On-screen Keyboard
The R1 digireader provides in default two kinds of input methods – English and Google Pinyin -- with their corresponding on-screen keyboard. You can specify y our favorite input method as default through setting menus.
Note: Press an input area can bring up the on-screen keyboard.

2.3.1 On-screen Keyboard for English Input Method
The function for each key shown above is as described below The key with an alphabet character printed on it is an alphabet key, and you can press o n it to input the
corresponding character.
This is the Enter key.
This is the Delete key (which is for deleting input character).
A press on this will hide the on-screen keyboard.
A press on this will active the capital mode, and will change the interface of the on-screen
keyboard as shown below:
This is the Space key.

This is the numerical switching key. A press on it will change the interface of the keyboard
as shown below:
2.3.2 Google Pinyin Input Method
The key functions for this method are similar to that of the English input method, so the description is saved here and please refer to the previous section for deta ils. With the Pinyin input method, you can input text in English and Simplified Chinese. The interface of the on-screen keyboard is as below.

2.4 Cards
The R1 digireader provides the capability of reading and writing SD card and Menca card, The R1 digireader supports both MicroSD card (hereafter referred as “SD Card”) and Menca card (hereafter referred as “Menca card”).
2.4.1 SD Card
The R1 digireader support SD card work as two modes, one is standard SD card mode, another is encrypted mode(hereafter referred as “euSD”), The user can choose type when format the SD card.
2.4.1.1 euSD
euSD is a standard SDCard too, euSD is used for both user data and backu p/lend/purchase data.
And there are two partitions on euSD (Divide the sd card into half):
z Open Partition: Unencrypted. User can use it store any contents from any where, such as
copy from PC … and any device can access contents in it freely
z Close Partition: Use some mechanism to protect contents o n the SD card. It is used to store
contents that backup/lend from Menca Card, and contents download fro m Cloud. It couldn’t be accessed by any other device.
There are four pre-built folders under Open partition table of euSD: Music: System will treat all files under it as music, and import them to the Library, and they can be
browse under Music of the Library. Audiobook: System will treat all files under it as Audiobook, and import them to the Library, and they
can be browse under Audiobook of the Library.

eBook: Sytstem will treat all files under it as eBook, and import them to the Library, and they can be browse under eBook of the Library.
Others: No matter what files in it, system do not classify them. Even the pdf files, music files…
2.4.1.2 Standard SD card
Standard SD card that no any encryptions.
2.4.2 Menca Card
Publisher should put their content to the Menca Card, and there is an encryption partition table to protect contents in it. Menca card can only be accessed by R1 device, There are two ty pes for Menca card partition table:
z Open Partition: Unencrypted. User can use it store any contents from any where, such as
copy from PC … and any device can access contents in it freely
z Close Partition: Use some mechanism to protect contents in it. It is used for publisher to
store their contents on the Menca Card, It only can be accessed by R1 DIGIREADER device.
2.4.3 Access cards
You can access from a PC to open partition of your cards(include SD card and Menca card) installed in your R1 digireader to exchange files.
All you need is to connect your R1 digireader to your PC with a USB cable. As soon as you complete the connection, the screen will change to the one as shown below:

Select here “Mount as Disk Driver(s)”, and SD card and Menca card will be moun ted as two standard removable disk drivers. In the Windows XP, for example, there will be two removable disks newly added, as shown below. Now, you can copy files from your PC to both Card disks, as well as manage the documents stored in your R1 digireader.
You can store files in your SD card using other SD card devices, and then insert it into the SD card slot on your R1 DIGIREADER to read the files.
Note: To the files stored in the SD cards and Menca cards, your R1 digireader will automatically perform necessary processes such as sorting and categorizing. The time required for such processes depends on the number and size of the files.

3 Power ON/OFF
3.1 Steps to power on
1. A press on the POWER button.
2. The ePapaer screen display to white.
3. Kibano image appears.
4. The system is completely booted and the Home screen is open .

3. After user’s confirmation, the system shows the shutdown is progressing

4 Interface
4.1 Home Screen
Overview for Home Screen:
Library Area
4.2 Status Bar
On the top area of the screen, there is the Status Bar. It is for showing many kind of system operating information, including battery status, network status, and current time, as well as messages notifying you an SD card being inserted/removed.
4.2.1 Battery status
In normal operation mode, the battery status icon indicates how many power is still left – more the white stripes, more the power left. When the battery is in full charged, the icon will be full of the stripes.
When starting the battery charging, the icon will turn into as shown below.
And once the battery fully charged, the icon will switch back to the normal operation mode with indicating fully charged.

4.2.2 Wireless network status
The network status will be shown in one of the icons shown below: more the white stripes, better the network signa l.
4.2.3 Bluetooth status
This icon indicates the Bluetooth function has been activated. If see no this icon, it means the
function is still not activated.
This icon indicates that your EB-800C has established a connection with other Bluetooth device.
4.2.4 SD card status
This icon indicates a SD card is newly inserted and the system is running a check on it (In most of case, you will not see this icon appears, since the check is seldom required). The icon often will quickly be blocked from your sight by the “Preparing the SD card” message, which will also disappear soon after the SD card is ready.
This icon indicates the system is performing some preparations to the files stored in the external SD card. The preparations can be such as sorting and categorizing. Once the preparations are completed, this icon will disappear. The time required for such preparations depends on the number and size of the files.
This icon indicates the external SD card can be removed safely, and will be shown until the card is
removed from the slot. After the card being removed, the icon will be replaced by that the SD card slot is now empty.
This icon indicates that the SD card slot is empty, and will be shown until a SD card being inserted
into the slot.

4.3 Card Area
In the Home screen, Menca Card overview is shown on the Card Area. And shortcuts for first three alphabetical order items in the Menca Card are placed there (eBook has high priority, then Audiobook, and then Music)

When user Press “View all” button or Card ICON will guide user go to the Menca view directly; When user Press each shortcut, it should try to open it, for example: if the item is an eBook, Open and
read it, if the item is a AudioBook or Music, Open and play it.
4.4 Library Area
In the Home screen, Library overview is shown on the Library Area. And shortcuts for the last three uploading to the Library are placed there too.
When user Press “View all” button will guide user go to the Library view directly; When user Press each shortcut, it should try to open it, for example: if the item is an eBook, Open and
read it, if the item is a AudioBook or Music, Open and play it.
4.5 Shop Area
In the Home screen, Library overview is shown on the Shop Area, When the user press “View all” button will guide user go to the shop application. And four shotcut of books are placed there, when user Press any of it will show detail information of it on the shop.
4.6 Application Area
In the Home screen, Some shortcuts of application are shown on the Application Area, Press any of them will go directly to main screen of that application. User can use Touch gestures or Press arrow button on it to navigate it. Slide-left or Press arrow”>”: go to next 5 applications, Slide-right or Press arrow”<”: go to previous 5 applications.
4.7 Footer
In the Home screen, Shortcut for current reading/playing are place on the Footre Area if the user is playing a audiobook or music, or opening a book reading.
Press the shortcut will got to the audio player page or reading page.

5 Features
5.1 Card view
Menca card is an special kind of SD card made by KIBANO company. KIBANO eBook reader support this kind of card.
5.1.1 Plug in Menca Card
When Plug in a Menca Card into KIBANO eBooks reader device. A card reading page will be display ed on screen, it will take about several seconds to device to recognize the card.

5.1.2 Content Browse
5.1.2.1 Browse Structure:
There are three types of items in Menca Card content browse page. EBooks Books Audio Books Books Tracks Music Tracks
5.1.2.2 Browse Modes
There are two Browse Modes when browsing Menca Card content-List mode and Thumbnail mode.
Thumbnail Mode: Items will be displayed with their cover images.

List Mode: Items will be displayed in lines.

5.1.6 Backup
Menca Card backup is to backup the contents on Menca Card to the euSD card attached on the system. After backup, the content on Menca Card can be browsed and read/played in the library w ithout Menca
Card plug in.

5.2.2 Browse Modes
There are two Browse Modes when browsing library-List mode and Thumbnail mode.
Thumbnail Mode: Items will be displayed with their cover images.
List Mode: Items will be displayed in lines.

Notes: When browsing “Other”, it only supports list mode.
5.2.3 Location Filter
There is an area at the head bar for user to filter the library items from their locations. The options are:
1 All 2 Device 3 Cloud
When choose All, it means that the items from all locations will be listed. When choose Device, it means that only the items on the SD card will be listed. When choose Cloud, it means that only the items on the Cloud server will be listed.
There are three types of icon displayed on each item to indicate the location of the item:
1.
: Indicates that this item is only located on Cloud.
2.
: Indicates that this item is only located on Device (SD card).

3. No icon: Indicates that this item is located both on Cloud and Device (SD card).
There are four buttons below the head bar that presents four types of items for browse:
5.2.4 eBooks
When choose eBooks, the eBooks on the SD card and Cloud server (Location Filter “All”) will be listed on the page.
If the items are more than one page, there will display two buttons for go the next page or previous page at the bottom.
5.2.4.1 Operations

5.2.5 Audiobooks
When choose Audiobooks, the Audiobooks on the SD card and Cloud server (Location Filter “All”) will be listed on the page.

5.2.5.1 Operations:
Click on the item of Audiobook, it will directly enter the Audiobook item’s tracks page .

Long Press on the item of Audiobook, it will prompt a popup menu. For Audiobook, user can do the following operations:
1. Play
2. Delete
3. Uploadtocloud
4. Download
The same as eBooks operations above
When enter the audiobook item’s tracks page, click on the track item it will start playing of it.
5.2.6 Music
When choose Music, it will show the Music page contains: New Playlist, All Tracks and Playlist Items.
New Playlist: Click on New Playlist it will prompt a dialog box for user to enter a name for the new playlist being created.

Then press OK to go to the track select page for user to select the tracks he/she wants to add to this new playlist.
All Tracks: When click on All Tracks, it w ill go to the all tracks page and list out all the tracks both on the SD card and Cloud server (Location Filter “All”). And each track will contains Artist name and Album name information on it.

Click on the track it will start playing directly.
Playlist Item: When click on the Playlist item, it will go into the playlist’s track page.
5.2.7 Other
When choose Other, it will show the files list (Only in list mode) of all the items in “Other folder” on SD card.

There are different formats of files can be browsed in “Other”. The icon
indicates that this item is not
supported to be opened or played by this KIBANO device. “Other” doesn’t support filter because it will only display the items on SD card, no items on cloud server. Click on the items which is supported, it will open/play the item directly.
5.2.8 Search
Click on the Search button on Library. It will prompt a dialog box for user to input the key word for search.

Press OK, it will run search and display the search operation result. The icon search result status and click on it will return to the normal library browse page.

5.3.2 How to open a book
When navigating to an eBook that you want to play, a p ress on it w ill start open it. Or, you can long-press the eBook to bring up its context menu, and select the Read option to start reading it.
5.3.3 Function Menu
Press the MENU button or touch on the middle of the reading screen, the function menu will appear.
5.3.4 Turn Page
z Press “ARROW< ” button will go to previous page, Press “ARROW>” button will go to next
page; Press and hold “ARROW< ” will turn back page by page, Press and hold “ARROW> ” will turn forward page by page,
z User touch gesture Slide-left to turn to previous page, Slide-right to turn to next page.

5.3.5 Search words in book
When user press on the function menu, will guide the user to search word(s) as following picture shows:

5.3.6 Bookmark
User can add bookmarks for eBook, When user press top-right corner of the screen, will add a bookmark for current page, following screen shot shows t he re is a bookmark with thi s page:

Bookmark ICON should overlay on the content with a cer tain degree of transparency if margin is very narrow, and user press the top-right of the screen(bookmark area) will cancel bookmark(s) in the page.

5.3.7 Highlights & Notes
User can add highlight to some word’s or sentences to prompt the user to pay attention to. And user can delete an exist high light too. And user can add a note to a highlight too.
5.3.7.1 Add Highlights&Notes
Long-Press on the page to place “Start” of the selection, After releasing, will prompt a Context Menu as following picture:

When user select “Cancel” option will cancel the operation for placing current pushpin; When user select “Mark Start” option, will place a pushpin on the page as following picture: that means
we have choose START.

Until now, if user want to cancel “START” pushpin, Long-Press on "START" pushpin will pop up menu to cancel it, else will continue to place “END pushpin on the page.
For placing “END” pushpin, the way is same with placing “START” pushpin somehow: Long-Press on the page, will pop up Context menu as following:
When user select “Mark Start” option will cancel “START” pushpin that placed just now, and place a new “START” pushpin.;
When user select “Cancel Select” option will cancel the selection and two pushpins will be removed from the page;
When user select “Highlight” option will add a highlight for current reading book , and sho uld use fir st 20 words as name of this Highlight. Following picture shows a valid Highlight:

5.3.7.2 Highlights&Notes management
When user press
on the function menu, will guide the user to “Highlights&Notes” management

If user Long-press on a Highlight will popup a context menu to guide user delete the highlight.
If user Long-press on a Note will popup a context menu to guide user delete or edit the note.

5.3.8 TOC
Show title of chapters, and then user can select a chapter and begin to read from it.
When user press
on the function menu, will guide the user to show table of content for current
reading book as following screen shot:
5.3.9 Reading history
Remembers the last reading of the book, and can remember the last reading position for each book too.
5.3.10 Go to page
User can specify a Page No, Then begin to read from that page.

on the function menu, will guide the user to go to the page she/he want:

5.3.11.1 Font size
There are 5 levels for font.
If user press
will enlarge font a level, and if it is already the largest level, this button should be
invalid.
If user press
will reduce font a level, and if it is already the smalest level, this button should be
invalid.

When in “zoom in” mode, User can use tou ch gestures “Slide-up” , “Slide-down ”, “S lide-left” and “Slide­right” to move screen on the page.

5.7 FM sender
Press on the “FM sender” icon on the Home Screen will start FM sender application.
Once the check box has been ch ecked, the FM sender will be activated and will broadcast as the now frequency (like 106.2 in pic)
There will be an FM Sender Active icon at status bar to indicate user that FM sender is working.
