Situation:
The ESG E4400B instrume nt se r ies Het ban d VCO unl oc ks due to a non-linearity in the tuning
charactere ristic s of the sur f ace a coustic wave oscill at or use d to ge ne rat e th e hete r odyne band
(below 250 MHz) in the ESG. This VC O is loca ted on the Ref erenc e Boar d Asse m bly Module
(A11). Instrument front panel err or 513 r e sult s from this failure and f requency inaccura c y be low
250 MHz. Inform at ion fr om the VCO vender indica te s an exp ected fa ilur e rate of 8% to 12%
may be experienced over the specific ESG population.
Solution / Action:
The resolution plan is to repair on failure. Replace the referen ce board assembly and recalibrate
the ESG A/D RF Signal Generator in accordance to the Post-Repair Procedures; located in the
ESG Service Guide (P/N: E4400-90155/Print Da te Sept 99) . Shi p failed units to Agilent
Technologies c ustomer service ce nte r as desc r ibe d in the routing guide . Othe r w ise , post- r e pa ir
may be performed using the ESG Servi ce So ftware along with the ESG A/D Calibration Guide
(P/N: E4400-90325/Print Date Nov 99). All defe ctive Re fe renc e Boar d Asse m b lies ha ve be e n
purged from inventory and ALL failed E4400-60139/69139 and E4400-60140/69140
assemblies should be scrappe d.
