Situation:
The ESG-B Family of Signal Generators has been experiencing failures with the symptoms of “dark display or no display”. This is due to poor soldering of inductors L601 and L602. A new build of the motherboard that addresses this problem will not be done until March of 2002. Until this problem was discovered, replacement of the motherboard was the corrective action taken.
Solution/Action:
The resolution plan consists of the following:
1. Repair on failure.
2. Prevent future occurrences of display errors by re-soldering the inductors L601 and L602.
Instructions to access the inducto rs:
Removal:
1. Remove the CPU/Motherboard Assembly A14. (Refer to A14 CPU/Motherboard replacement procedure in Service Guide.)
Repair:
1. Locate and re-solder the wire-wound toroid inductors L601 and L602. They are located on the top side of the motherboard, near the front panel edge, adjacent to the silkscreen designator “DS509”.
NOTE:
Take care not to damage the leads of the inductors. They are fragile and can be broken.
If damaged, the replacement part number is 9100-3922
