Two pull-up resist or s were ad de d as part of this design chang e. It ha s sinc e be en discove r e d tha t
these pull-up r e sistors reduce the life time of the RAM lithium backup ba tte r y. The backup ba tte r y
is needed to reta in da ta in the memor y w he n the uni t is disconnecte d from the mains p ow e r
supply. Thi s w ill not affect meas ur eme n t int egrity of the unit, ho w ev er the unit will lose all use r
data that was stored in it before the ba ttery failure o ccur r e d. Wh en the battery has faile d it will
display the following Power On Self Test error: RAM Battery Failed.
At the time the design change was introduced, the modification was not deemed to have any
effect on form/fit/f unc tion, and the decision was made by the ma nufa ct ur ing engineering team
not to change the boa r d number, nor to create a serial pr e fix br e ak for the unit.
Thus the range of ser ial numbers shown above wil l cove r all de f e ctive units, but there may be
some that are not aff ecte d by this particular pr oblem. This should not be an issue, as any unit that
has a backup batte r y f ai lure will r eq uir e investigation and repa ir , even if the r oot c a use is not
related to thi s pa rtic ula r service note.
This service note will provide a mea ns of ide ntifying units that fail as a direct cause of the de sign
change made to the Processor circuit.
Solution / Action:
If any of the un its listed above are r ece ive d a t the se r vic e cen te r an d are ex hibiting this fault then
perform the following procedure:
1) Remove the Processor Assembly (E4418- 60001) from the uni t.
2) Locate the board rev isio n data ma rk ed on the LABEL on th e component side (top sid e) of
the assembly. If the revision is identifi ed as ’E4418-60001-S’ the n pr oc e ed to step 4. If the
revision is NOT ’E4418-60001-S’ then proceed to step 3.
