Change to the ALC OFF adjustment in the 8720A/B 8719A

Situation:
Some cases of intermittant phase lock failure have been traced to an insufficient level of RF power
during retrace. This level is adjusted by the ALCOFF adjustment in the service manual. In a few
instruments we have found that the adjustment procedure in the service manual will not result in
sufficient power to reliably phase lock under all circumstances.
Solution/Action:
The following procedure replaces step 1 of the AUTOMATIC LEVELING CONTROL ADJUSTMENT in the Adjustments section of the 8719A 8720A/B service manual.
1. Press [PRESET]{SYSTEM}{SERVICE MENU}{ALC OFF}{INPUT PORTS} {R} [MKR].
Slowly adjust the ALC OFF down until a phase lock error occurs. Note the marker value. Adjust
ALC OFF up to 6 dB above the marker reading previously noted. Press [MENU]{CW FREQ} and
continue with step 2 of the AUTOMATIC LEVELING CONTROL ADJUSTMENT in the adjustments section of the 8719A 8720A/B service manual.
