Situation:
The 86120B firmware revision 1.00 may not correctly read the wavelength of a directly
modulated (chirped) laser or a broad band device such as a filter or Bragg grating because
the linewidth exceeds the instrument specifications. For example, this effect will show up as
a "stair step" on a graph of temperature vs wavelength for a directly modulated, temperature
tuned laser.
Solution / Action:
The new release of firmware, revision 2.00 offers a menu selection to allow the user to
select either NARROW (CW laser) or BROAD (filters, chirped lasers, LEDs). The
BROAD selection will correctly read the wavelength of the device and will not exhibit the
"stair step" effect when the device is tuned.
This firmware revision is installable by Agilent Service Centers and is set up for
internal sale only. This upgrade does not require re-calibration of the instrument.
A customer can order the upgrade by contacting their local Service Center.
