The valvemustbe marked with a maximumset pressurenot

water heater(150Ibsdsq.in.) anda dischargecapacitynot less
thanthe water heater inputrate as shownon the modelrating
plate.(Electricheaters- watts dividedby 1000x 3415equal
BTUIHr.rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingthe useofa
temperature-pressurerelief valvecomplyingwith ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may requirea valvemodel differentfrom the one
furnishedwiththe waterheater.
Compliancewith suchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfiedby
the installeror enduserofthe water heaterwith a locallypre-
scribedtemperature-pressurereliefvalveinstallodin the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeofthe factoryfur_
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperationof thewaterheater,thereliefvalvemustnot
beremovedfromit'sdesignatedopeningor plugged. I
The temperature-pressurerelief valvemustbe installeddirectly
intothefittingofthewater heaterdesignatedforthe reliefvalve.
Positionthevalvedownwardand providetubing sothat anydis-
chargewillexit onlywithin6 inchesabove,or at anydistance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactismade
withanyliveelectricalpart.Thedischargeopeningmustnot be
Mockedor reducedin sizeunderanycircumstances.Excessive
length,over30feet,or useof more thanfourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethe dischargecapacityofthe valve.
No valveor otherobstructionisto be placedbetweenthe relief
valveandthe tank.Do not connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunlessa6" airgapisprovided.Toprevantbodilyinjury,haz-
ardto life,or property damage, the reliefvalvemustbeallowed
to dischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If
the dischargepipeisnot connectedto a drainor othersuitable
means,the waterflowmaycausepropertydamage.
The DischargePipe:
• Mustnot be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipesizeofthe
valve,orhaveanyreducingcouplingsorotherrestrictions.
• Mustnotbe pluggedor blocked.
i: Mustbeofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution.
Mustheinstalledso as to allow completedrainageof both
the temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the discharge
: pipe.
Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.
Mustnothaveanyvalvebetweenthe relief valveandtank.
