WATER HEATERS EQUIPPED FOR ONE TYPE GAS
ONLY: This water heater is equipped for one type gas
only. Check the model rating plate near the gas control
valve for the correct gas. DO NOT USE THIS WATER
HEATER WITH ANY GAS OTHER THAN THE ONE
SHOWN ON THE MODEL RATING PLATE. Failure to
use the correct gas can cause problems which can result in
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE. If you have any questions or doubts consult
your gas supplier or local utili^.
AWARNING
INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQ
UIDS (VAPORS) ARE LIKELY TO BE PRESENT OR
STORED (GARAGES, STORAGE, AND UTILITY AREAS,
ETC): Flammable liquids (such as gasoline, solvents,
propane (LP) or butane, etc.), all of which emit flammable
vapors, may be improperly stored or used in such areas.
The gas water heater pilot light or main burner can ignite
such vapors. The resulting flashback and fire can cause
death or serious burns to anyone in the area, as well as
property damage.
If installation in such areas is your only option, then the
installation must be accomplished in a way that the pilot
flame and main burner flame are elevated from the floor
at least 18 inches. While this may reduce the chances of
flammable vapors from a floor spill being ignited, gasoline
and other flammable substances should never be stored or
used in the same room or area containing a gas water
heater or other open flame or sparì« producing appliance.
NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air currents
from other areas of the structure to the appliance.
AWARNING
If this water heater will be used in beauty shops, barber
shops, cleaning establishments, or self-service laundries
with dry cleaning equipment, it is imperative that the
water heater or water heaters be installed so that com
bustion and ventilation air be taken from outside these
areas. Refer to the “Facts to Consider About the
Location" section of this manual and also the latest edi
tion of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.I, also
referred to as NFPA 54 for specifics provided concerning
air required.
AWARNING
A fire can start if combustible materials such as clothing,
cleaning materials, or flammable liquids are placed against
or next to the water heater.
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provid
ed with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve
certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory
that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed
equipment or materials, as meeting the requirements for
Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot
Water Supply Systems, and the latest edition of ANSI
Z21.22 and the code requirements of ASME. If replaced,
the valve must meet the requirements of local codes, but
not less than a combination temperature and pressure
relief valve certified as meeting the requirements for
Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot
Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally rec
ognized testing laboratory that maintains periodic
inspection of production of listed equipment or
materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure-
not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure’
of the water heater (150 Ibs./sq. in.) and a discharge
capacity not less than the water heater input rate as
shown on the model rating plate. (Electric heaters watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the
use of a temperature-pressure relief valve complying
with ANSI Z2I.22 and ASME, may require a valve model
different from the one furnished with the water heater.
Compliance witK.such loc^ requirements must be satis
fied by the installer or end user of the water heater with
a locally prescribed-temperature-pressure relief valve
installed in the designated opening in the water heater in
place of the victory fünïr^fëd valve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve
must not be removed from Tt's designated opening or
plugged. —
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed
directly into {hêTIttlngof the water-heater designated for
the relief valyg. Position the valve downward and provide
tubing so that any^fScfiarge'wilTiStif only within 6 inches
above, or at any distance below the structural floor. Be
certain that no contact is made with any live electrical
part. The discharge opening must not be blocked or
reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows can
cause restriction and reduce the discharge capacity of
the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between
the relief valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing
directly to discharge drain unless a 6" air gap is provided.
To prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or property dam
age, the relief valve must be allowed to discharge water
in quantities should circumstances demand. If the dis
charge pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable
means, the water flow may cause property damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
• Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of
the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other
restrictions.
• Must not be plugged or blocked.
• Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
• Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of
both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dis
charge pipe.
• Must terminate at an adequate drain.
• Must not have any valve between the relief valve and
tank.

Safety Precautions
AWARNING
A gas water heater cannot operate properly without the
correct amount of air for combustion. Do not install in a
confined area such a closet, unless you provide air as
shown in the “Facts to Consider About the Location” sec
tion. Never obstruct the flow of ventilation air. If you have
any doubts or questions at all, call your gas company.
Failure to provide the proper amount of combustion air
can result in a fire or explosion and can cause DEATH,
SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem
perature which will satisfy clothes washing, dish washing,
and other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently
injure you upon contact. Some people are more likely to
be permanently injured by hot water than others. These
include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/men-
tally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home
fits into one of these groups or if there is a local code or
state law requiring a certain temperature water at the hot
water tap, then you must take special precautions. In addi
tion to using the lowest possible temperature setting that
satisfies your hot water needs, a means such as a mixing
valve, should be used at the hot water taps used by these
people or at the water heater. Mixing valves are available
at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manufac
turers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
“Temperature Regulation” section in this manual.
AWARNING
Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correc
tion before further use. Turn “OFF” gas to water heater
and leave “OFF” until repairs are made, because failure
to correct the cause of the sooting can result in a fire or
explosion causing DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,
OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
This water heater must not be installed directly on car
peting. Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood
panel beneath the appliance extending beyond the full
width and depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches
(76.2mm) in any direction, or if the appliance is installed
in an alcove or closet, the entire floor must be covered by
the panel. Failure to heed this warning may result in a
fire hazard.
AWARNING
VENT DAMPERS - Any vent damper, whether it is operat
ed thermally or otherwise must be removed if its use
inhibits proper drafting of the water heater. .
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers; Gas-fired water
heaters having thermal efficiency in excess of 80% may
produce a relatively low flue gas temperature. Such tem
peratures may not be high enough to properly open ther
mally operated vent dampers. This would cause spillage of
flue gases and may cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as com
plying with the latest edition of American National
Standard ANSI Z2I.68 (ANSI Z2I.66 & 67, respectively,
cover electrically and mechanically actuated vent
dampers). Before installation of any vent damper, consult
your local Sears Service Center or the gas utility for fur
ther information.
AWARNING

connected from the gas supply piping system during any
pressure testing of the gas system at test pressures in
excess of
• The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply pip
ing system by closing its individual manual shutoff valve
during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping sys
tem at test pressures equal or less than '/i pound per

'A pound per square inch (3.5kPa).
AWARNING
BEFORE LIGHTING [PROPANE (L.P.) GAS WATER
HEATERS]: Propane (LP.) gas is heavier than air. Should
there be a leak in the system, the gas will settle near the
ground. Basements, crawl spaces, skirted areas under
mobile homes (even when ventilated), closets and areas
below ground level will serve as pockets for the accumula
tion of this gas. Before attempting to light or relight the
water heatePs pilot or turning on a nearby electrical light
switch, be absolutely sure there is no accumulated gas in
the area. Search for odor of gas by sniffing at ground level
in the vicinity of the appliance. If odor is detected, follow
steps indicated at “For Your Safety” on the cover page of
this manual then leave the premises.
AWARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system
may occur if air for combustion contains certain chemical
vapors. Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents, refngerator and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool
chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach,
and process chemicals are typical compounds which are
potentially corrosive.
AWARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systems may present a
serious health risk or asphyxiation.
Safety Precautions continued on page 4
Safety Precautions
AWARNING
The water heater with draft hood installed must be prop
erly vented to a chimney which terminates outdoors.
Never operate the water heater unless it is vented to the
outdoors and has adequate air supply to avoid risks of
improper operation, explosion or asph^iation.
AWARNING
Minimum clearances between the water heater and com
bustible or non-combustible construction are I" at the
sides and rear, 4" at the front, and 6" from the vent pipe.
Clearance from the top of the jacket is 18" on most mod
els. Note that a lesser dimension may be allowed on some
models. Refer to the label on the water heater adjacent to
the gas control valve for all clearances.
AWARNING
Do not use this appliance if any part of it has been under
water. Immediately call a Sears Service Technician to
inspect the appliance and to replace the gas control or any
part of the burner system which has been under water.
A CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplished in such a manner
that if the tank or any connections should leak, the flow of
water will not cause damage to the structure. When such
locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan should
be installed under the water heater. Drain pans are avail
able at your local Sears store. Such a drain рал must be
not greater than I ‘A inches deep, have a minimum length
and width of at least 2 inches greater than the water
heater dimensions and must be piped to an adequate
drain. The pan must not restrict combustion air flow.
Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or Sears to
be held liable for any water damage in connection with
this water heater.
AWARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot
water system that has not been used for a long period of
time (generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is
extremely flammable and explosive. To prevent the possi
bility of injury under these conditions, we recommend the
hot water faucet be opened for several minutes at the
kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which are
connected to the hot water system are used (such as a dis
hwasher or washing machine). If hydrogen ^ is present,
there will probably be an unusual sound similar to air
escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet is
opened. There must be no smoldng or open flame near
tile faucet at the time it is open.
AWARNING
INSULATING JACKETS: When installing an external
water heater insulation jacket on a gas water heater:
• DO NOT cover the temperature-pressure relief valve.
• DO NOT put insulation over any part of the top of the
gas water heater.
• DO NOT put insulation over the gas control valve or gas
control valve/bumer cover, or any access areas to the
burner.
• DO NOT let insulation around the gas water heater to
get within 8 inches of the floor (air must get to the
burner).
• DO NOT cover or remove operating instructions, and
safety related warning labels and materials affixed to the
water heater.
Failure to heed this will result In the possibility of a fire or
explosion.

AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Wrt«* heaters aie intended to
produce hot water. Water heated to a temperature whkh will
satisfy clothes washing, dish washing, and otfier sanitizing needs
can scaM and permanently injure you upon contact Some peo
ple are more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physical-
ly/mentaily handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home
fits into one of these groups or if there is a local code or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then
you must take special precautions. In addition to using the lowest
possible temperature setting that satisfies your hot water needs,
a means such as a mixing valve, should be used at the hot water
taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves
are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow man
ufacturers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
“Temperature Regulation” section in this rrranual.
AWARNING
This water heater shall not be connected to any
heating systems or component(s) used with a non
potable water heating appliance.
AWARNING
Toxic chemicals such as used for treatment of boilers
or non-potable water heating appliances shall never
be introduced into a potable water heating system.
Look at the top cover of the water heater.Thecoldwater
inlet is marked cold. Put two or three turnsofteflontape
around the threaded end of the threaded-to-sweatcoupling
and around both ends of the 54" threadednipple.Usingflexi
ble connectors, connect the cold water pipetothecolawater
inlet of the water heater.
NOTE: This vrater heater is super insulated to minimize
heat loss from the tank. Further reduction in heat loss
can be accomplished by insulating the hot water lines
from the water heater.

If a water heater is installed in a closed water supply systern;
such as one having a back-flow preventer, check valve, water
meter with a check valve, etc... in the cold watet supply; means
shall be provided to control thermal expansion. Contact the
local utility or local Sears Service Center on how to control this
situation.
NOTE: To protect against untimely corrosion of hot and
cold water nttings, it is strongly recommended that di-elec
tric unions or couplings be installed on this water heater
when connected to copper pipe.
The illustration shows the attachment of the water piping to the
water heater. The water heater is equipped with 34' water
connections.
NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapter
before attaching the adapter to the cold water inlet connec
tion. Do not solder the cold water supply line directly to the
cold water inlet. It will harm the dip tube and damage the
tank.
• Look at the cop cover of the water heater. The water outlet is
marked hot. Put two or three turns of teflon tape around the
threaded end of the thrcaded-to-sweac coupling and around
both ends of the

Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with a combination temperature^ressures relief valve certified
by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or mate
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z2I.22 and the code require
ments of ASME. If replaced, the valve must meet the require
ments of local codes, but not less than a combination tempera
ture and pressure relief valve certified as meeting the require
ments for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for
Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recog
nized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of
production of listed equipment or materials.
The valve must be rtiarked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure of the
water heater (ISO IbsAq. in.) and a discharge capacity not less
than the water heater input rate as shown on the model rating
plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.) - - '
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a
temperature-pressure relief valve complying with ANSI Z2I.22
and ASME, may require a valve model different from the one
furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satisfied by
the installer or end user of the water heater with a locally pre
scribed temperature-pressure relief valve installed in the desig
nated opening in the water heater in place of the factory fur
nished valve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not
be removed from it’s designated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed directly
into the fitting of the water heater designated for the relief valve.
Position the valve downward and provide tubing so that any dis
charge will exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance
below the structural floor. Be certain that no contact is made
with any live electrical part The discharge opening must not be
blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows can cause
restriction and reduce the discharge capacity of the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between the relief
valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing directly to discharge
drain unless a 6" air gap is provided. To prevent bodily injury, haz
ard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must be allowed
to discharge water in quantities should circumstances demand. If
the discharge pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable
means, the water flow may cause property damage.
The Discharge Pipe;
* Must not be smaller in size than the outiet pipe size of the
valve, or have any reducing couplings or other restrictions.
* Must not be plugged or blocked.
* Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
* Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
* Must terminate at an adequate drain.
* Must not have any valve between the relief valve and tank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at least once a year. Caution should be taken to
ensure that (I) no one is in front of or around the outlet of
the temperaturei>ressure relief valve discharge line, and (2)
the water manually discharged will not cause any bodily
injury or property damage because the water may be
extremely hot
If after manually operating the valve, it foils to completely
reset and continues to release water, immediately dose the
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure relief
valve with a new one.

HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Vfeter heaters are intended to
produce hot water. Water heated to a temperature which will
satisfy clothes washing, dish washing, and other sanitizing needs
can scald and permanently injure you upon contact Some peo
ple are more likely to be permanently injured by hot vrater than
others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home
fits into one of these groups or if there is a local code or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then
you must take special precautions. In addition to using the lowest
possible temperature setting that satisfies your hot water needs,
a means such as a mbcing valve, should be used at the hot water
taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves
are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow man

Venting System Inspection
At least once a year a visual inspection should be made of the
venting system. You should look for:
main burner and pilot burner. The drawing isforyourreference.
You should check for sooting which is not normalandwill
impair proper combustion.
• Obstructions which could cause improper venting. The com
bustion and ventilation air flow must not be obstructed.
• Damage or deterioration which could cause improper vent
ing or leakage of combustion products.
• Rusted flakes around top of water heater.
AWARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may
occur if air for combustion contains certain chemical vapors.
Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigerator and air
conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals, calcium
and sodium chloif^, waxes, bleach, and process chemicals are
t^ical compounds which are potentially corrosive.
AWARNING
Obstructed or deteriorated vent systems m^ present a serious
health risk or asphyxiation.
Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correction
before further use. Turn “OFF” gas to water heater and leave
“OFF" until repairs are made, because failure to correct the
cause of the sooting can result in a fire or explosion cauting
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURE, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
AWARNING
Be sure the vent piping is properly connected to prevent
escape of dangerous flue gasses which could cause deadly
asph^iation.
AWARNING
If after inq)ection of the vent system you found sooting or
deterioration, something is wrong. Call the local gas utility to
correct the problem and clean or replace the flue and venting
before resuming operation of the water heater.
Burner Cleaning

Troubleshooting Guide
Start Up Conditions
CONDENSATION
Whenever the water heater is filled with cpid water, a certain
amount of condensation will form while the burner is on, A
water heater may appear to be leaking when in fact the water is
condensation. This usually happens when:
• When a new water heater is filled with cold water for the
first time,
• When gas burns and water vapor is produced in water
heaters, particularly high efficiency models where flue tem
peratures are lower,
• When you use large amounts of hot water in a short time
and the refill water is very cold.
Moisture from the products of combustion condense on the
cooler tank surfaces and form drops of water which may fall
onto the burner or other hot surfaces to produce a “sizzling” or
“frying” noise.
Excessive condensation can cause pilot outage due to water run
ning down the flue tube onto the main burner and putting out
the pilot.
Because of the suddenness and amount of water, condensation
water may be diagnosed as a “tank leak”. After the water in the
tank warms up (about 1-2 hours), the condition should
disappear.
Do not assume the water heater is leaking until there has been
enough time for the water in the tank to warm up.
An undersized water heater will cause more condensation. The
water heater must be sized properly to meet the family’s
demands for hot water including dishwashers, washing machines
and shower heads.
Excessive condensation may be noticed during the winter and
early spring months when incoming water temperatures are at
their lowest.
Good venting is essential for a gas fired water heater to operate
properly as well as to carry away products of combustion and
water vapor.
SMOKE/ODOR
It is not uncommon to experience a small amount of smoke and
odor during the initial start-up. This is due to burning off of oil
from metal parts, and will disappear in a short while.
THERMAL EXPANSION
Water supply systems may, because of high linepressure, fre
quent cut-offs, the effects of water hammerandothers, have
installed devices such as pressure reducing valves, checkvalves,
back flow preventers, etc. to control these typesofproblems.
When these devices are not equipped with aninternalby-pass,
and no other measures are taken, the devicescausethewatersys
tem to be closed. As water is heated, it expands(thermalexpan
sion) and closed systems do not allow for theexpansionofheat
ed water.
The water within the water heater tank expandsasitisheated
and increases the pressure of the water system.Iftherelieving
point of the water heater’s temperature-pressurereliefvalveis
reached, the valve will relieve the excess pressure.Thetempera-
ture^ressure relief valve is not intended fortheconstant
relief of thermal expansion. This is an unacceptablecondition
and must be corrected.
It is recommended that any devices installedwhichcouldcreate
a closed system have a by-pass and/or the systemhaveanexpan
sion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermalexpansionin
the water system. Expansion tanks are availableforordering
through the Sears Service Center. Contact thelocalplumbing
inspector, water supplier, and/or the Sears ServiceCenterfor
assistance in controlling these situations.

SMELLY WATER
In each glasslincd water heater there is installedatleastone
anode rod (sec parts section) for corrosionprotectionofthe
tank. Certain water conditions will cause areactionbetweenthis
rod and the water. The most common complaintassociatedwith
the anode rod is one of a “rotten egg smell".Thisodorisderived
from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in thewater.Thesmellis
the result of four factors which must ail bepresentfortheodor
to develop:
a. a concentration of sulfate in the supplywater.
b. little or no dissolved oxygen in thewater.
c. a sulfate reducing bacteria within the waterheater.(This
harmless bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)
d. an excess of active hydrogen in thetank.Thisiscausedby
the corrosion protective action of the anode.
Smelly water may be eliminated or reducedinsomewaterheater

and then chlorinating the water heater tankandallhotwater

‘A/R” IN HOT WATER FAUCETS
AWARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot
water system that has not been used for a long period of time
(generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is extremely
flammable and explosive. To prevent the possibility of injury
under these conditions, we recommend the hot water foucet
be opened for several minutes at the kitchen sink before any
STRANGE SOUNDS
Possible noises due to expansion and contraction of some metal
pans during periods of heat-up and cool-down do not represent
harmful or dangerous conditions.
elecMcal appliances which are connected to the hot water sys
tem are used (such as a dishwasher or washing machine). If
hydrogen gas is present, there will probably be an unusual
sound similar to air escaping through the pipe as the hot water
faucet is opened. There must be no smoking or open flame
near the foucet at the time it is open.
Condensation causes sizzling and popping with the burner area
during heating and cooling periods and should be considered
normal. See “Condensation section.

HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM
This water heater is equipped with an automatic gas shut off sys

trol valve must be teplaced. If this were to occur, turn “OFF” the
entire gas supply to the water heater. Contact the Sears Service
Center.
A WARNING
Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to shut off,
turn “OFF” the manual gas control valve to the appliance.
NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
• Check the manual gas shut off valve to be sure it is open.
• Check the pilot flame. It may have gone out. All models have
an opening behind the outer door for viewing the pilot,
• If the pilot is not lit, follow the “Lighting” instructions in this
manual or located above the gas control valve on the water
heater to relight the pilot. If the water was extremely hot and is
now cold, the high limit safety temperature shut off may have
put out the burner and pilot. If the high temperature shut off
activates, the gas control valve must be replaced. Contaa the
Sears Service Center.
• The gas control knob must be turned to the “ON” position.
• If lower temperature settings will not lowerthewatertempera

AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to
produce hot water. Water heated to a temperature vdiich will
satisfy clothes washing, dish washing, and otfier sanitizing needs
can scald and permanently injure you upon contact Sonrte peo
ple are more lilmly to be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physicah
ly/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home
Às into one of these groups or if there is a local code or state law
requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water tap^ then
you must take special precautions. In addition to using the lowest
possible temperature setting that satisfies your hot water needs,
a means such as a mixing valve, should be used at the hot water
taps us^ by these praple or at the water heater. Mixing valves
are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow man
ufacturers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the
'Temperature Regulation” section in this manual.
• The temperature adjustment dial may be set too low. See the
“Temperature Regulation" section.
• The gas company can check the gas input to see if it is correct.
An undctfired water heater will not heat water as quickly.
• Look for leaking or open hot water (aucets. Make sure all are
, closed,
• The cold water inlet temperature may be colder during the winter
months. It will take longer to heat the water and seem like
less hot water.
• If you cannot find what is wrong, call the Sears Service Center.
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the
water temperature in certain situations may be hotter
than the thermostat setting.
Short, frequent draws of hot water - especially with very
cold incoming water - can shock the thermostat into brief
operation resulting in hotter and hotter layers of water
closer to the top of the tank.
Changes in hot water usage patterns or raising the tem
perature differential between the cut-on of the thermo
stat and the cold water temperature will usually eliminate
the problem.

Leakage Checkpoints
Use this guide to check a “Leaking” water heater. Many suspected
“Leakers* arc not leaking tanks. Often the source or the water
can be found and corrected.
If you arc not thoroughly iamiliar with your local gas codes your
water heater, and safety practices, contact the Sears Service
