Facts to Consider About the Location
You should carefully choose an indoor location for the new water heater, because the placement is a very important consideration
for the safety of the occupants in the building and for the most economical use of the appliance. This water heater is not intend-
ed for outdoor installation.
Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water heater in a new location, the following critical points must be
observed.
The location selected should be indoors as close to and as cen-
tralized with the water piping system as possible. This water
h
eater, as well as all water heaters, will eventually leak. Do not
install without adequate drainage provisions where water flow
will cause damage,
_,CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of the water heater must be accomplished in such a man-
ner that if the tank or any connections should leak, the
flow of water will not cause damage to the structure. When such locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain
pan should be installed under the water heater. Drain pans are available at your local Sears stores. Such a drain pan must be piped to an adequate drain. Under no cir-
cumstances is tbe manufacturer or Sears to be held liable for any water damage in connection with this water
beater.
Facts to Consider About the Convertible Lower Element
The Upper Element (if a double element model), is a conven- tional 3800 watt element which only operates at its rated
wattage on 240 volts. (See rating plate on water heater).
The Lower Element (if a double dement model) of the water heater can be converted from operation at 3800 watts to 5500
watts on a 240 volt system.
Read and follow water heater warnings and instructions. If after reading these instructions in this manual, if you do not under- stand any portion, call Sears Service Center.
AWARNING
Before making tbe conversion to 5500 watts, check the (I) power supply...must be 240 volts, (2) wiring...10
gaugeAWG, Type TW_ 60C or equivalent, and (3) Circuit breakers or fusng capable of 30 amp loading. Also, the
installation must conform with this manual local codes i and electr c ut ty rules. Failure to comply can result in i
DAMAGE.DEATH,SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY

_, CAUTION
INSTALLATION IN RESIDENTIAL GARAGES: The water heater must be located and/or protected so it is
not subject to physicaldamage by a moving vehicle.
The location selection must provide adequate clearances for
servicing and proper operation of the water heater.
NOTE:Whether or not the element conversion is made the model rating plate must be marked. Using a hardpoint ink
pen, check the appropriate block within the model rating plate, which is located adjacentto the lower accesspanel.

HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tam-
perature which will satisfy space heating, clothes wash- ing, dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald
and permanently injure you upon contact. Some people are more likely to be permanently injured by hot water
than others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits into one of these
groups or if there is a local code or state law requiring a certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then
you must take special precautions. In addition to using the lowest possible temperature setting that satisfies your hot water needs, a means such as a mixing valve, shall be used at the hot water taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves are available at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manufactur- ers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the "Temperature Regulation" section in this manual.
The illustrarion shows the attachment of the water piping to the water heater. The water heater is equipped with ¾" water
connections.
Ifa water heater is installed in a closed water supply system; such as one having a back-flow preventer, check valve, water meter
with a check valve, etc. in the cold water supply; means shall be provided to control thermal expansion. Contact the local utility
or local Sears Service Center on how to control this situation.

Temperature-Pressure
Relief Valve
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provid-
ed with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that
maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or materials, as meeting the requirements for
Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, and the latest edition of ANSI
Z21.22 and the code requirements of ASME. If replaced, the valve must meet the requirements of local codes, but
not less than a combination temperature and pressure relief valve certified as meeting the requirements for
Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recog-
nized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or materials. The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure
not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressureof the water heater (150 IbsJsq.in,) and a dischargecapacity not lessthan the water beater input rate as shown on the
model rating plate, (Electric heaters - watts divided by
1000x 3415 equal BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the use of a temperature-pressure relief valve complying with
ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve model differ- ent from the one furnished with the water beater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satis- fred by the installer or end user of the water heater with a
locally prescribed temperature-pressure relief valve installed in the designated opening in the water heater in placeof the factory furnishedvalve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not be removed from it's designated opening or
plugged. The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed directly into the fitting of the water heater designatedfor
the relief valve. Position the valve downward and provide tubing so that any dischargewill exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance below the structural floor. Be
certain that no contact is made with any live electrical part. The discharge opening must not be blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessivelength, over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows can cause
restriction and reduce the dischargecapacity of the valve. No valve or other obstruction isto be placed between the
relief valveand the tank. Do not connect tubing directly to dischargedrain unlessa 6" air gap is provided. To prevent
bodilyinjury, hazard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must be allowed to discharge water in quantities should circumstances demand. If the dischargepipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable means, the water flow may causeproperty damage. The Discharge Pipe:
Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other
restriction.
Must not be pluggedor blocked. Must be of material listedfor hot water distribution.
Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of beth the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dis- charge pipe.
Must terminate at an adequate drain. Must not haveanywdvebetween the relief wdveand tank.
_,WARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually operated at least once a year, Caution should be taken to ensure that (I) no one is in front of or around the outlet
of the temperature-pressure relief valve discharge line, and (2) the water manually discharged will not causeany
bodily injury or property damage because the water may be extremely hot.
If efter manually operating the valve, it fails to complete- ly reset and continues to release water, immediately, closethe cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the
draining instructions, and replace the temperature-pres. sure relief valve with a new one.

Filling the Water Heater
To fill the water heater with water:
Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of
the water heater. Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open when the water beater is in use.
To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run
until a constant flow is obtained. This will let air out of the
water heater and the piping.
I A CAUTION 1
Never use this water heater unless it is completely full of | water. To prevent damage to the tank and heating ale- |
ment, the tank must be filled with water. Water must flow from the hot water faucet before turning "ON" | power. |
Check all new water piping for leaks. Repair as needed.

Temperature Regulation
A WARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem- perature which will satisfy space heating, clothes wash-
ing, dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently injure you upon contact. Some people
are more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than others. These include the elderly, children, the
infirm, or physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits into one of these groups or if there isa local code or state law requiring a
certain temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take special precautions. In addition to using the lowest possible temperature setting that satisfies
your hot water needs, a means such as a mixing valve, shall be usedat the hot water taps used by these people or at the water heater. Mixing valves are available at
plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manufactur- ers instructions for installation of the valves. Before
changingthe factory setting on the thermostat, read the

Troubleshooting Guide
Start Up Conditions
THERMAL EXPANSION
Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line pressure, frequent cut-off's, the effects of water hammer among
others, have installed devices such as pressure reducing valves, check valves, back flow preventers, etc.-to control these types of
problems• When these devices are not equipped with an internal by-pass, and no other measures are taken, the devices cause the
water system to be closed• As water is heated, it expands (ther- mal ex_,ansion) and closed systems do not allow for the expan-
sion of heated water. The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated and
increases the pressure of the water system• If the relieving point of the water heater's temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the
valve will relieve the excess pressure. The temperature-pressure
relief valve is not intended for the constant relief of thermal
expansion. This is an unacceptable condition and must be cor-
rected.
It isrecommended that any devicesinstalled which could createa closed system have a by-passand/or the system have an expan-
sion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermal expansion. Thermal expansion tanks are available from Sears stores and
through the Sears Service Centers. Contact the local plumbing inspector, water supplier and/or the Sears Service Center for assistancein controlling these situations.

Operational Conditions
SMELLY WATER
In each water heater there is installed at least one anode rod (see parts section) for corrosion protection of the tank. Certain water
conditions will cause a reaction between this rod and the water. The most common comg!aint associated with the anode rod is
one of a rotten egg smell. This odor is derived from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is the result of tour factors which must allbe present for the odor to develop:
a. a concentration of sulfate in the supply water. b. little or no dissolved oxygen in the water. c. a sulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This
harmless bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)
d. an excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is caused by
the corrosion protective action of the anode.
Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater models by replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material, and then chlorinating the water heater tank and all hot water
lines. Contact the local Sears Service Center for further informa- tion concerning an Anode Replacement Kit #9001453 and this
Chlorination Treatment.
If the smelly water persists afterthe anode replacement and chlo-
rination treatment, we can only suggest that continuous chlori-
nation and filtering conditioning equipment be considered to eliminate the water problem.
Do not remove the anode leaving the tank unprotected. By doing so, allwarrantyon the water heater tank is voided.
RUMBLING NOISE
In some water areas, scale or mineral deposits will build up on
your heating dements. This buildup will ,,causea rumbling noise.
Follow "Element Cleaning/Replacement instructions to clean and replace the elements.
HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM
The water heater has a high limit shut off system with a reset button located on the thermostat.
Follow the resetting instructions which refer to the high limit behind the access panel.
Before beginning, turn "OFF" electrical power supply to the
water heater,
"AIR" IN HOT WATER FAUCETS
J&WARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water system that has not been usedfor a long peri-
od of time (generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable and explosive. To prevent the
possibility of injury under these conditions, we recom-
mend the hot water faucet be opened for several min- utes at the kitchen sink before any electrical appliances
which are connected to the hot water system are used
(such as a dishwasher or washing machine). If hydrogen gas is present, there will probably he an unusual sound
similar to air escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet is opened. There must be no smoking or open flame near the faucet at the time it is open.
&WARNING HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCKI Before removing any access panels or servicing the water heater, make
[ sure the electrical supply to the water heater is turned [ "OFF". Failure to do this could result in DEATH, SERI-
[ OUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
In a new installation, the water heater may not be p.roperly connected. Make sure the cold water supply valve is open.
Review and check piping installation. Make sure that the cold water line is connected to the cold water inlet to the
water heater and the hot water line to the hot water outlet on the water heater.
Make sure the electrical supply to your water heater is _ON".
Check for loose or blown rises in your waterheater circuit. Circuit breakers weaken with age and may not handle their
ratedloadand should be replaced. Make certain the disconnecl:switch, if used, is in the "ON"
position. Check to see the electric serviceto your house has not been
interrupted. If this is the case, contact the electriccompany. Are the thermostats set to the desired temperature? See
"Temperature Regulation" section.
If you had exl_erienced very hot water and now no hot water, the proolem may be due to the high temperature
shut off system. See "High Temperature Shut Off System" in the "Troubleshooting_ section.
During very cold weather, the incoming water will also be
colder and it will requirea longer time to becomeheated.
ACAUTION
I If the highlimit must be reset again, call SearsService
Departmentto findout whythe high limit turned"OFF"
the eectHc power.
The hot water usage may exceed the capacity of the water
heater. If so, waitfor waterheater to recoverafter abnormal demand. Also examine pipes and faucets for possiblewater
