1 Introduction and description
1.1 Purpose
Juno2 is a camera for digital image processing and visualization designed for research, education & training as well as for
industrial applications. Use the only for the purposes described in this operating manual.
1.2 Symbols
Observe all specifications of the operating, maintenance and repair conditions described in this operating manual
and in the operating manuals of further components.
Any other use than prescribed under „intended use“ or use that goes beyond the above is not as intended.
Consequently, the warranty is void and any liability of the manufacturer is excluded.
1.3 Safety Instructions
For operational startup and safe operation of the camera system with power supply and accessories, observe the
following safety precautions:
• Prior to startup, familiarize yourself with the camera using these instructions and the instructions in the operation
manuals of all connected devices.
• Use the camera only in accordance with the operation manual.
• Always keep the operation manual within reach.
• Never operate the camera in an area containing explosive/combustible gases. An electric spark can trigger an explosion.
• Do not operate the camera or its accessories in fluids or in high humidity.
• Do not allow fluids to penetrate the camera or its power supply.
• Do not take the camera or its power supply apart under any circumstances.
• Do not drop the camera or its power supply or expose them to strong vibrations. Improper handling or storage of either
the camera or the power supply can lead to damage.
• Continually pointing the camera lens or sensor into the sun or into the light cone of a floodlight can lead to damage or
destruction of the sensor.
• Do not insert any objects through potential openings of the camera or the power supply as these could disturb
dangerous voltage points, damaging the camera and leading to serious injury due to electric shock.
1.3.1 Reasonably Foreseeable Misuse
Specifically, the following uses of the camera are prohibited:
• Use of the camera in fluids or in high humidity.
• Use of the camera in an explosive atmosphere.
• Use of the camera in an area exposed to strong vibrations.
• Use of the camera in a setting in which the camera’s lens and sensor are directed toward the sun.
• Use of the camera on an unstable surface.
• Any possible use that is not listed in the Intended/Appropriate Use.

1.3.2 Connection
• Connect cables only when the camera and/or the power supply is turned off/powered off.
• Do not bend or kink the connection cable; do not pinch or clamp it with any object.
• Only connections listed in the operation manual may be used. Other connections may endanger the camera’s functional
safety.
• The camera may only be powered with the voltage specified in this operation manual. Prior to connection, verify whether
the voltage of the power source to be used corresponds to voltage requirement specified in the operation manual. If it
does not match what is stated in the operation manual, do not connect the camera under any circumstances!
1.3.3 Dysfunctions
• The camera, power supply and accessories may only be operated in perfect working order.
• Faults, which may impair safety have to be eliminated immediately.

1.4 Maintenance/cleaning
No maintenance may be performed on the camera that is not listed in the Maintenance chapter.
From time to time, wipe off the housing with a soft and clean cloth. Attention: NEVER use any cleaning fluids, chemicals or
wax! Always transport the camera with a cap protecting the sensor. If necessary, clean the filter glass of the sensor with an
optical brush, a swab or optical tissue.
1.5 Disposal
The European directive 2002/96/EG (WEEE) requires that electrical and electronic equipment must be
separately collected from unsorted urban waste for subsequent recycling. Kappa optronics GmbH
assumes responsibility for the return and conformant disposal of its electrical and electronical
products.

1.6 Warranty
The device we have supplied to you has been carefully constructed and assembled. Prior to delivery, it underwent exhaustive
assessment. For this reason, we warranty its compliance with applicable safety regulations, solid workmanship and flawless
function.
The term and all conditions of this Warranty are governed by the General Terms and Conditions of Kappa optronics GmbH
and by the purchase contract. Provided that no other agreements have been reached, the following conditions are in force:
This Warranty covers neither normal wear and tear nor deficiencies that arise from improper handling, improper use, or
failure to follow the instructions in the operation manual. Specifically, the manufacturer can only be held responsible for
function and safety-relevant properties if and when any service performed on the device, exceeding those tasks described in
the operation manual, has been performed exclusively by the manufacturer or its expressly authorized representative.

3 Camera description
3.1 Generally
The full HD microscopy camera Juno2 is designed for applications in the lab, science and industry.
If the camera is operated in stand-alone use without a PC images can be saved directly onto an SD card. With the HDMI
output all contrast information for a breathtaking color rendition are utilized. In HD resolution with 1920x1080 pixels the
camera provides 30 images per second. Juno2 is based upon Kappa’s Full HD camera design base Juno.

4 Initial operation
4.1 Configuration
The standard configuration consists of camera, power supply and monitor. Alternatively, the live stream can be displayed
over the network connection on network devices with appropriate player software.

4.2 Connecting to power supply
Connect the USB-connector to the power supply and the mini USB-connector to the mini USB socket of the camera.
Plug the power supply plug/wall wart into a socket outlet.
Please observe the correct orientation of the power supply plug. The wide side is the top side! The LED on the topside glows
for approx. 20 seconds during the initialization of the camera, then it starts flashing. When the LED is glowing green again,
the camera is ready for operation.
Insert the SD card for operation without PC. Please use SD- or SDHC cards up to 32GB. Prior to first use, new memory cards
must be formatted on a PC. Please choose the FAT32 file system for this.
Insert the memory card into the SD-card slot until click. The gold contacts face in the direction
of the lens.
To remove the SD card, please push again lightly. The card is then unlocked and can be
removed.
4.3 Operation with network connection
Use an RJ45 network cable to connect the camera. The Juno2 camera provides an RTSP stream at the network connection
(Real Time Streaming Protocol). With an appropriate player the live stream can be displayed on a PC.
You can read out the required IP address in the OSD menu.

5 Flange focal distance
The flange focal distance is the distance between the sensor and the connection surface of the lens. C-mount is a standard
mount with an inch thread and a flange distance of 17.526 mm.
The Juno2 is fitted with a C-mount connection to mount the lens. That means that the correct flange focal distance is preset
when C-mount lenses are used. TV adapters of microscopes and endoscopes often provide fine adjustment for the correction
of the flange distance of the eyepiece and the sensor.
5.1 Check and adjust flange focal distance (zoom lens)
The flange distance is adjusted during manufacture. If you use a lens or a TV adapter with a different flange focal distance,
the image will be unsharp. In this case, the flange focal distance must be readjusted. Please proceed as follows:
Choose a suitable object in great distance, adjust the lens to maximum zoom (maximum focal distance) and focus the
image.
Zoom the lens to maximum wide-angle (minimum focal distance) without changing the focusing.
The flange distance is correct if the image remains sharp over the entire range of focal distances of the lens.
If the image is blurred at minimum focal distance (unchanged focusing), the flange distance has to be adjusted.
To adjust the flange distance, loosen the fixing screw (internal hexagon screw) on the rear side of the camera until you can
barely turn the lens mount (C-mount or CS-mount). Turn the lens mount of the camera until the image is sharp at minimum
focal distance. Repeat the test and correct again if necessary. Tighten the fixing screw to secure the adjustment.
5.2 Check and adjust flange focal distance (fixed focal distance lens)
Adjust the lens to infinity and check if the image is sharp. If the image is blurred, adjust the flange distance as described
above.
5.3 Check and adjust flange focal distance (microscope)
Make sure that the diopter compensation at the oculars is adjusted to 0. Adjust with the ocular until the object is sharp in
the ocular. Adjust the flange distance as described above if the object is not displayed sharply on the monitor at the same
time.

5.4 The first image
Prior to the first recording or image capture, perform a white balance to adjust the camera to the color temperature of the
light situation.
Perform the white balance
Switch on the lighting and point the camera to a white surface. Press the AWB button briefly to start the white balance. The
white balance is completed in one second. The camera is ready for operation.
Save an image or a video on SD card
Position your object and frame the image.
Press the release button briefly for manual image capture (camera symbol). The camera captures an image, the LED is
flashing green and the image is saved on the SD card as a JPEG file.
To record a video stream press the release button on the camera until the green LED is flashing. Press the button again to
end the recording.
Image processing on the PC
If you want to process or to save the image on the PC, remove the SD card from the camera and insert it into the SD card
slot of the PC or of an external SD card reader. Load the image or the video from the SD card and process it on your PC.

7 OSD menu
7.1 Operation
Press the menu button on the remote to display the OSD menu. Select the top menu with the arrow keys UP and
DOWN . A red frame shows the active menu item.
The top menu consists of:
Color: color adjustments
Exposure: brightness adjustments
Resolution: resolution of monitor display and image storage
Setup User: save and reset user settings
Technical Info: information on software version and network settings
When the top menu item is selected, the subitems are displayed in the center column.
Use the arrow key RIGHT to go into the submenu. Use the arrow keys UP and DOWN to select the required
function.
To change a setting, press again the arrow key RIGHT .
You can then change the value with the arrow keys UP and DOWN .
Press ENTER to apply the new setting.
If the new setting shall NOT be applied, you can leave the menu item with the arrow key LEFT or you quit the OSD menu
by pressing the menu key .
After a period of inactivity the OSD menu is automatically hidden.

7.2 Color
The Color menu consists of the following items:
AWB: adjustments for the automatic color balance.
Color Temp RG: color temperature red-green
Color Temp BG: color temperature blue-green
Saturation: color saturation
Gamma: nonlinear luminance adaptation
7.2.1 AWB
The camera comes with an automatic white balance that is performed either one-time or continuously. In both cases, the
AWB makes sure that the color components red, green and blue are balanced in the image.
As a rule, you obtain a correct color reproduction, if the color balance is adapted to the lighting. For this, please point the
camera to a white object or surface under the respective lighting conditions and perform the white balance.
For a one-time white balance, the setting has to be PUSH BUTTON. Perform the white balance by pressing the button on the
camera housing.
A continuous white balance is only recommended if all color components are evenly presented in a scene. This is
the case for outdoor scenes. The automatic white balance will provide a wrong color reproduction for mainly
monochrome scenes.
Set the automatic white balance to MANUAL, if you want to adjust the color settings manually.
7.2.2 Color Temp RG and Color Temp BG
Here you can manually adjust the color temperature. You can only select these menu items if AWB is set to MANUAL. You
can vary the balance of colors to obtain a „warmer“ or „colder“ color reproduction.
7.2.3 Saturation
Also color saturation is an item for the optimization of the color reproduction with regard to individual preferences and
monitor properties. Color reproduction can be adapted from rich colors to a monochrome color reproduction.
7.2.4 Gamma
Due to the principles of visual perception and technical characteristics of monitors, a nonlinear adaptation of the image is
recommended for a realistic display of (color) images.
The menu provides fine adjustment for nonlinearity. A Gamma value lower than 1 enhances the dark areas in the scene
compared to the bright areas. For Gamma values higher than 1 it is the other way round. The default 0.45 ITU709 is a
standard waveform, which adapts the brightness profile to most monitors.

7.3 Exposure
The Exposure menu consists of the following items:
AET/AGC: automatic control for exposure/gain (brightness)
Auto Level: brightness level for AET/AGC
Exposure: manual adjustment for exposure
Gain: manual adjustment for gain
7.3.1 AET/AGC
The camera comes with automatic exposure and gain control. It is a peak value control, which makes sure that no pixel is
brighter than the adjusted auto level.
The automatic adjustment can be performed one-time or continuously. Switch of the control if you want to adjust the
settings for EXPOSURE and GAIN manually.
7.3.2 Auto-Level
Auto-Level defines the maximum brightness value in the image for the automatic brightness. You can adjust the auto level
value to your requirements.
7.3.3 Exposure
If the automatic control is switched off, you can adjust the exposure function manually. Go to Exposure > AET/AGC,
select OFF in the right column and press ENTER. Then go to Exposure in the center column and change the value in
the right column according to your requirements.
Interferences may occur at short exposure times and changing light conditions (room illumination), which show as flickering
in the image. In this case try to reduce the light quantity in the camera with the iris and to increase the exposure time.
7.3.4 Gain
If the automatic control is switched off, you can adjust the gain manually. Go to Exposure > AET/AGC, select OFF in
the right column and press ENTER. Then go to Gain in the center column and change the value in the right column
according to your requirements.
A high gain value can lead to more noise in the image. Please make sure always to maximize the exposure time in a first
step before you increase the gain. If you use a lens with an iris, make sure at first to open the iris completely first.

7.4 Resolution
The Resolution menu consists of the following items:
Preset: standard image output format
Video Encoder: data stream settings
Sharpening: edge enhancement
Snapshot Res: resolution for image storage
Snapshot Delay: delay for image acquisition
7.4.1 Preset
Here you can change the image resolution at the HDMI interface.
Two different settings are available:
720p60 1280x720 pixel@60Hz (HD Ready)
1080p30 1920x1080 pixel@30Hz (Full HD)
The default preset is 720p60.
If you want to use the image resolution 1080p30, please make sure that the connected monitor can process the
setting!
7.4.2 Video Encoder
Parallel to the HDMI output the image data stream is also output at the network interface of the camera. You can select the
bandwidth of the image data stream.
HIGH = 8 Mbit/s
MID = 4 Mbit/s
LOW = 2 Mbit/s
The higher the bandwidth, the higher the image quality. A lower bandwidth can be useful if you want to record the data
stream or if one receiver processes several image data streams.
7.4.3 Sharpening
In some cases, it may be useful to perform an edge enhancement in the camera image. The sharpening brings out
the structures in the image, but the image may appear unnatural. In connection with the gain function, there might
be more noise in the image.

7.4.4 Snapshot Res
Insert an SD card in the camera slot if you want to save images with the snapshot button. Use the arrow keys to select one
of the following options in the OSD menu:

7.4.5 Snapshot Delay
Depending on the installation of the camera, for example on a microscope, you may get blurred images with the CAPTURE
button for snapshots. In this case, select Snapshot Delay to adjust a delay between the activation of the button and the
actual image acquisition.
7.5 User Setup
You can configure the settings for Date/ Time and Flip Image as user settings or you can reset the settings to default. The
system provides user settings for up to four users.
