in its development. Ifyou arenot familiarwith Chinese,do NOT, out of carelessness or curiosity, select Big 5, as thedisplay contentwill appearin Chinese, and you mayhave problemsreturning tothe languagedisplay of your choice.
Highlight your selection andpress the button to confirm it.
D. Power Off
There are two PowerOff schemes. One iscalled OFFTIME; the otheris calledSLEEP TIME. If youwish to set only the Sleep Time, proceed to page16.
What is OFF Time? When the unit is stopped and therefore inactivein anyplayback orrecord mode, it can be made to automatically shut itself off after aspecified interval,up toa maximum of 60 seconds. By settingthe OFFTimer, you prevent theunit from being inadvertently left on if it is forgotten aboutthe obvious result being thereduction ofits batterylife. Any unit turned off by the OFFTimer can easilybe powered on againin theusual manner by pressing and holdingthe button for several seconds.
Setting the OFF TIME
1. Highlight Power off in the SystemSettings menu, and press the button to proceed.
2. In the resulting display, besure OffTime is selected;otherwise press the button to do so. Once done, pressthe button again to displaythe OffTime scale.
3. Using the or buttons, choose the numberof seconds,up to 60, that you
want the unit to be operational after it’s been stopped or idle. Short settings help to
conserve the battery; longersettings providefor greater convenience by keepingthe unit from turning offtoo quickly.
Note:If you prefer that the unit never shut itself off when stopped or idle, select “0” on
the Off Time scale. Doingso causesthe unitto remainon untilit ismanually shut off (in the usualmanner, by pressing the button for several seconds).Bear in
mind that by selecting “0”, you defeat the Off Time function, and if you then forget
to turn the unit off manually,it willreduce batterylife ifyou forgetto turnthe unit off when not inuse.
4. Press the button to return to the System Settings menu.
JX-MP256FM Digital AudioPlayer -15-
Page 11
D. Power Off (cont’d)
What is SLEEP Time?
The unit’s Sleep Time can be compared to the Sleep function found in many clock
radios and TVs. TheSleep Timer will, whenits settime (upto 120minutes) is reached, turn the unit off without regard to the state it’s in—so any music, FM listening, recording, or other activitywill endabruptly whenthe unitshuts off. The SLEEP Timer provides far longer timeintervals thandoes theOFF Timer, but unlikethe OFF Timer (which requires the unitto beidle tobe turned off), the SLEEP Timer will beeffective under all conditions.
Setting the SLEEP TIME
1. Be sure Power off is highlightedin theSystem Settingsmenu, and press the button to continue.
2. In the resulting display, besure SleepTime is selectedby pressingthe button to do so. Press the button againto displaythe SleepTime scale.
3. By using the or buttons, choose the numberof minutes(up to120) thatyou want the unit to operate before it unconditionallyturns itself off.
Note:If you want the convenience of never having the unit shut off by itself, select “0”
on the Sleep Time scale. Doingso defeats thesleep timefunction, andunless the OFF Timer has beenset, a disabled SLEEPTimer will likelyaffect battery life if you forget tomanually turn the unitoff.
E. Contrast
YourJX-MP256FM allows you to set the display’s contrast. From the System Setup menu, highlight Contrast, and press the button. When the sliderappears, use the or button tochoose themost suitabledisplay contrast.
F. Online Device
When highlighted and selected, the OnlineDev.menu selectionoffers twochoices as to howyour JX-MP256FM canbe usedto exchangedigital fileswith yourPC. The most common choice willbe USB Disk, inwhich yourunit, whenconnected toyour
PC (see page 20), acts as a USB “flash drive”, and will appear as another disk drive in Windows’ “My Computer”, having a drive letter (e.g. E:) of its own.
-16- JX-MP256FM DigitalAudio Player
As a “USB Disk”, the JX-MP256FM is commonly used to receiveMP3 andordinary WMA files that are storedon yourPC forplayback bythe unit.It canalso be used to transfer any voice files(see page49) thatyou create,to yourPC, forstorage on its hard disk.
The other selection, knownas MediaDev. (Media Device),is requiredwhen you wish to download WMA files that aresubject to DRM (DigitalRights Management) restrictions (see pages 28-29).Such files,if youhave them, will onlyplay onyour JX-MP256FM if they’re transferred from Window’s Media Player, Version 10, which also requires that youroperating systemis Windows XP (as ofthis writing).A further discussion of WMA files withDRM restrictionscan befound onpage 28.
G. Memory Info
After highlighting Memory info, press the button. After several seconds, thedisplay will showa numeric and graphical representation of theamount of memory in use.
H. FW (Firmware) Version
All devices like yourJX-MP256FM containa smallcomputer programgoverning its operation, and because the program is “hard-wired” within the device, it’s known as firmware. After highlighting FW Version, press the button.
The information displayed (typicalof thatshown atthe right), is helpful in identifyingthe unit’s firmware version(s) and its creation dateinformation which may be useful forupgrades and repairs.
I. DRM Time
Set the DRM(Digital Rights Management) time asyou didthe System Time (see page 14). Once done,it isnot necessaryto setthe DRM time again, unless a dead
battery causes the unit’s clock to stop. If so, replace the battery, set the System Time
and then the DRM time tomatch theSystem Time.
J. Exit
Highlighting Exit and pressing returns you to the Main Menu (seepage 12).You can also reachthe Main Menuby pressingthe button from within any ofthe above System setup selections.

Locking the Unit
The JX-MP256FM has aHOLD functionwhich, when active, prevents any
“button-based” function from taking place. As long as the HOLD function is in effect, the unit’s current mode of operation cannot be changed.
The HOLD function isactivated bysliding theHOLD switch(see page 3) tothe left. Once done, the HOLD function icon appears briefly.
When active, the HOLDfunction maybe usedto prevent: anunintended button pressfrom turningthe unitON (say, while it was OFF in your

when connected to your PC, acts as a USB “flash drive”, and will appear as another disk drive in Windows’ “My Computer”, having a drive letter (e.g. E:) of its own. In this
case, Windows Explorer can be usedto readilycopy, delete, move, orexchange folders and files betweenyour PCand theJX-MP256FM. Ifyou are not comfortable using Windows Explorer, consult your Windows documentation, or a friendwith the proper experience.
The other selection, knownas MediaDev. (Media Device),is requiredwhen you wish to download WMA files that aresubject to DRM (DigitalRights Management) restrictions (see pages 28-29).Such files,if youhave them, will onlyplay onyour JX-MP256FM if they’re transferred from Window’s Media Player, Version 10, which, at the time of this writing, also requiresthat youroperating system is Windows XP (any version).

MP3 and WMA Audio
Perhaps the most popularattribute of your JX-MP256FM is its smallsize andits ability to store andplay a number of musical selections. Unlikethe Voice Recorder, the music stored within the unit isnot recorded with the microphone, butis transferred
(downloaded) from electronic music files already stored on your PC’s hard drive. Typically, most music files contain lots of content and, as a result, canbe ratherlarge– but because of today’s technology, it’s possible to compress or “squeeze” many audio
files into less than1/10 their original size, without damagingthem oraffecting their “listen-ability”. This small size not only makes them easy to store, but equally easy to distribute and obtain overthe Internet.
File Formats MP3s
The two most popularfile typesfor compresseddigital audioare called MP3 and WMA. MP3 (short forMotion PictureExperts Group–Audio Layer 3) isthe fileformat chiefly responsible for thepopularity ofdigital music on the Internet, and for the advent of the many popular audio players like your JX-MP256FM. Even though the size of an MP3 file is only about10% thesize ofthe file its contentis derivedfrom, its sound quality compares veryfavorably with theoriginal, andMP3 files are recognized by virtually all media players.
WMAs
The other popular compressedaudio fileis calledWMA (Windows Media Audio). According to Microsoft, the developer of theWMA format, WMAmusic is supposed to provide better sound ina smallerdigital packagethan theequivalent MP3 files. While WMAs are not as popular as MP3s, certain WMA files have theability toprotect the artist because they allowmusicians andtheir producersspecify howtheir music is used by applying userrights tothe electroniclicenses that determine justhow and where these WMA files maybe distributed, played, andcopied. This concept, known as Digital Rights Management (DRM), should beunderstood ifyou planto download WMA music files that haverestrictions onthem. See page 28for adiscussion of DRM.
-24- JX-MP256FM Digital AudioPlayer
Sources of MP3s and WMAs
So where do youget your supply of digital musicfor yourJX-MP256FM? Onesource is the music found on regular CDs, whose tracks, aspreviously stated, are substantially reduced in sizeonce theyare convertedto the MP3 or WMAfile formats. This is donethrough the use of software applications that mayalready beresident in your computer. Such software includes a process called ripping, in which theoriginal
digital audio on a CD is transferred to your PC’s hard drive, and then compressed into
the desired format. Oncedone, itcan easily be downloadedto yourdigital music player (see page 21),where itcan beplayed.
Besides your own CDs,the Internet,of course, is clearlythe chief source of digital music, where MP3s andWMAs caneasily befound andmade availablefor immediate
downloading. Their relatively small file size, coupled with today’s widespread use of
high speed Internet connections, make acquiringcompressed audioone of the most popular Internet activities. TheInternet is filled with sites that providefree, legalmusic, along with many whichallow youto acquiresongs andcomplete albumsfor anominal fee, and even thosewhich usesubscription servicesfor that purpose. The scope of
this manual doesn’t permit a detailed exploration of obtaining Internet music, but
through the use of Internet search engines, magazine articlesand bookson the subject, along with thehelp offriends and associates, you can soonbe wellon your way to obtaining lotsof musicfor yourJX-MP256FM.
MP3/WMA ID Tags
Many MP3 tracks available from the Internet come with an electronic “ID tag” (called an ID3) that contains information about thetrackmost importantly:
the Computer Filename(e.g. INeed You.mp3)the Track Title (e.g. INeed You)the Artist (e.g. America)the Album Name (e.g. America’s Greatest Hits)
Many ID tags containadditional information, which may includethe yearthe songwas released, its length (mm:ss),technical data about its BitRate andSampling (see page 30) and sometimes even its lyrics. Because of the size of your player’s LCD display, only themost importantinformation will be presentedthus, the Title andthe

Artist. If desired, therest of the information (called properties) is bestviewed from the PC on which the MP3or WMA file resides.
Since MP3s and WMAsmay notbe equippedwith ID3 information, thedisplay willbe missing certain data. At worst, thetrack willbe identifiedonly withits filename, and any other field willbe blank.
Lyrics
YourJX-MP256FM can also display the lyrics to songs as they’re playing, as a kind of miniature karaoke machine. Songs that displaylyrics mustbe accompaniedby alyric text file, to be further discussedon page 33.
Organizing MP3 and WMA Music onYour PC
People who store MP3sand WMAs on their PCs usually placetheir songsinto folders so that their musicmay be organized in a preferredmanner, either accordingto a
musical category (e.g. Rock ‘n Roll, Oldies, R&B, Country, etc.), the songs of a single
artist, or a particularalbum, byyear, or byplaylists (groups of favorite songsthat seem to work well together).
There are many softwareprograms available, which permit easy organization of your music files. Even withoutthe benefitof suchsoftware, both WindowsExplorer (not Internet Explorer) and Windows Media Player offera detailedview of the relationship between the folders that hold yourmusic, and the musicfiles youwish toplace within them.
When you transfer musicaltracks tothe JX-MP256FM,you cankeep thesame folder and file structure intact, and enjoythe sameconvenience andorganization provided by your PC.
As the owner of this product, it’s possible that you already have a collection of MP3s and/or WMAs in yourPC that are readyto be downloaded. If so, youcan skipto page 37. If you’re not yet experienced in working with MP3 or WMA formats, or in transferring files between yourPC anda USB device, informationin thismanual is intended to help you.

The Ethics of Downloading Music
Once it became apparent that theInternet wasan idealenvironment for obtainingand exchanging digital data, it wasn’t surprising that a number of ethical questions would arise, and that abuses would takeplace. According to existingcopyright law, purchased media products like music CDs ormovies onDVD canonly becopied for backup purposes, but whosecontent cannotbe exchangedover theInternet, orin any other manner, without the permission and/or duecompensation paid toits author(s) or creator(s). These points are summarizedbelow:
Digital Ethics
In the United States, you CAN generallymake copies of anymusic youbuy
if your copyis abackup ofthe originaland intendedfor yourown privateuseif you wishto changeits format(e.g. toMP3 orWMA), andthen download it toa
portable music player (e.g.your JX-MP256FM)
to changethe orderof thesongs on the original version, andthen copythe resultto
recordable media (e.g. aCD-R/RW discor acassette tape) for yourown private use
to make acompilation ofyour favorite songs for your own privateuse Youcan alsolend theoriginal recording to a friend, who can listento itbut who
CANNOT make copies for his/her personal use,or fordistribution orsale toanyone else.
These restrictions have been implemented to protect the “artistic property” of the
performers, composers, lyricists, and producers who provide us withmusical entertainment. However, there is a happy medium. You no longerhave to spend up to $20 for aCD ina recordstore, unless you want to. Theworld of the Internet has brought forth a newtype ofmarket in which legalcopies of individual songs or
complete albums can be obtained far less expensively if they’re downloaded to your PC. Once they’re paid for, they can be downloaded, listened to, and copied (burned) to CD(s), as long as the above “digital ethics”, are observed. Microsoft, in their
development of the WMAaudio file technology, hasemployed further safeguardsthat govern the transfer ofdownloaded filesto othercomputers andto portable devices, known as Digital RightsManagement (DRM).
JX-MP256FM Digital AudioPlayer -27-
Page 17
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
Microsoft’s DRM is a system that protects the copyrights of data that is circulated via the Internet or other digital media by enabling the data’s secure distribution while
denying any illegal distribution.Generally, a DRMsystem protects such copyrighted material through encryption soit canonly beaccessed byauthorized users,or witha
“digital watermark” (or similar method) so that the content cannot be freely distributed.
(DRM) has been employedin newerWMA files to assure that those who developed and produced the workare not only properlycompensated throughthe purchase, but that attempts to makeillegal copiesor otherwise improperly distribute thefiles are prevented. In effect, yourconcerns arenot onlywhether thefile willplay onyour computer, but whereyou canuse thefile after you getit. ForWMA files governed by DRM restrictions, how youlisten toyour filescan varyfrom artistto artistand even between online music storesproviding suchfiles. Considerthe following issues:
Windows WMA DRM supports time-limited playback ofapplicable digital media
files. Licenses to playsuch files, obtained when the filesare purchased, can specify the start date, the enddate, andany otherlimits to the license’s duration. If a userwith anexpired license triesto access a digital media file, the user will be directed back to theoriginating website foranother license.
Windows WMA DRM also supports limiting the number of times an applicablefile
can be playedunder anexisting license.
Italso supports limiting the numberof copyrightedfile transfersto portable
devices and adds a right inthe license to either enable ordisable copying from your portable device toanother computeror portable media. The licenseis bound to a uniqueID onthe portable device or media.
Before buying any WMADRM files, findout:
How many timescan youcopy your downloaded file (from one folder to another)
on your PC’s hard drive?
Onhow many different PCs orportable devices (like your JX-MP256FM) can you
copy the file?
Onhow many CDs (or DVDs)can youcopy thefile andsuccessfully listento iton
a standard CD player?

Online Music Stores
A number of Online MusicStores are listedbelow for your benefit. While thereare dozens of such sites, the listcontains only those whose files are availableas either MP3s and/or WMAs, asthese arethe formatsthat arecompatible with your JX-MP256FM. Any other format you download, unless it’s convertedto MP3 orWMA (not always a good idea, due to loss-of-quality issues), willnot playon yourunit.

the lyrics begin, however, no ID3 informationwill bedisplayed forthe durationof the song.
Lyrics
YourJX-MP256FM supports lyricfiles (allsuch filesmust havethe extension.LRC) while
playing songs. As you’ll see shortly, .LRC files are simple text files with a “time stamp”
that preceded each line. Some prepared lyrics (.LRC files) may beobtained from the
Internet through search engines (use the topic “LRC Lyric Files” (without the quotes) for a
selection of sites andlinks to a varietyof information. However, in thelong run, doing it yourself may be moresatisfying andmore accurate.
How do I Create an .LRC file?
It’s not hard to do. First, you’ll need a copy of the song’s lyrics you wish to display.
Sometimes these are suppliedwith theCDs youpurchase, butif not, lyrics canusually be obtained on theInternet throughproper searches. These are NOT .LRC files,
JX-MP256FM Digital AudioPlayer -33-
Page 20
but simply ordinary song lyrics madeavailable throughmany sources, most ofwhich
provide them for free. Worst case, if you can’t get the lyrics through any other source,
you may have to write them down as you listen to the song.
What follows are the partial lyrics to a 1991 Tower of Power song, called “How Could This Happen to Me?”, and they have been prepared as an .LRC file, which will be
explained below. How Could This Happento Me? Tower of Power Emilio Castillo
How Could This HappenTo Me.mp3 Stephen Kupka
Huey Lewis
[00:22.71]I was voted "Most Likely to Succeed", [00:27.96]With the future looking so very, very bright, indeed.
[00:33.34]Somehow I succeeded to fail miserably....
[00:38.01]How could this happen? How could this happen, to me? [00:44.06]Back in High School, I was the best that I could be. [00:49.39]A "Straight A" student--all the girls were after me. [00:54.74]I was even the captain of the football team. [00:59.38]How could this happen? How could this happen, to me? [01:05.34]Partly the reason, I trusted romance. [01:10.78]Confused by the passion, blinded by love. [01:16.20]If I only knew what I know today, [01:21.52]Might be much different; it might be much the same. [01:27.16]Can't believe it--they still think it's all my fault. [01:32.54]What do they know? I was there, I did my part. [01:37.93]What's more important, I did it straight from my heart. [01:42.57]How could this happen? How could this happen, to me? [01:48.23]Lady Luck took a powder and so did my so-called friends, [01:54.11]The same ones who said, "Stick it out till the bitter end." [01:59.87]But who needs enemies with friends like that? [02:04.04]How could this happen? How could this happen, to me?
The above represents afile writtenin the.LRC formatthat containsabout halfthe lyrics in this song. Notice that thetime stamp proceeding each line hasthe following format:
-34- JX-MP256FM Digital AudioPlayer
[mm:ss.hh] Each “time stamp” represents the time that haselapsed since the song
started, when the specificlyric linebegins. Forexample, the first lyric linebegins just short of 23seconds after thesong started. The last lyricline shownstarts just after 2 minutes and4 seconds since the songbegan. Theformat usestwo digitsto express elapsed minutes (mm), seconds (ss) and hundredths of a second (hh). Note that a colon ( : ) separates minutes and seconds, but a period( . ) separates seconds from hundredths of asecond. You must also use square brackets, as shown.
Although it can be tedious, it’s best to work with a digital stopwatch having split time capability, if you’re interested in displaying the lyrics accurately. If so, do the following:
1. Have the written ortyped lyricsin frontof you, arranged in a line-by-line format.
2. Set the stopwatch tozero.
3. Simultaneously start the music andthe stopwatch.
4. As soon as thefirst lyricline begins, press thesplit buttonto stopthe watchand quickly record the timein the [mm:ss.hh] format.Once done, press the split button again to resume the timekeeping.
5. As soon as thesecond lyricline begins, press thesplit buttonto stopthe watch and quickly record thetime, as before. Oncedone, pressthe splitbutton againto resume the timekeeping.
6. Continue this pattern until the song’s last line has been reached.
7. Using your PC, enterthe information in theformat shown on page 34 intoa text editor like Windows Notepad. For bestuse ofthe JX-MP256FM’s display as it displays your lyrics, donot entera spaceafter theright bracket. If it’s easier, you can replace the hundredthsdigits in any line with 00. If you use a wordprocessing program instead of Windows Notepad (like Wordpad,Word, orWordPerfect), you must save your workas anASCII or TEXT file (.txt), with exactly the same name as the MP3 or WMA file on which it’s based. Thus, thesong lyricson page34 would be named How Could This Happen To Me.txt
8. You must thenrename the text file so it has the .LRC extension. Renaminga fileis a basic Windows function and yourWindows documentation or its Helpsystem will
easily help you, if you don’t know how. When it’s done, your lyrics file will have the same name as the MP3 or WMA file on which it’s based, followed by the .LRC
extension, as in

Folder Structure
Besides its function asa musicplayer, your JX-MP256FM supports the storageof files and the creation offolders in which such files maybe placed. In additionto music (MP3 and WMAfiles) andvoice (WAV files), general documents (e.g. reports, spreadsheets, graphics, presentations, mailing lists, etc.)can bestored inthe unitand transported from place toplace. As such, the JX-MP256FMalso providesa convenient way to share digital photos with friends andfamily. Note: The unit’s storage capacity of 256 MBytes is the limiting factor as to how many
files can be kept. Before doingso, alwayscheck itscurrent memoryavailability (see page 17). If the remaining memorycapacity is not sufficient, it will benecessary to remove some files, eitherby deletingthem ormoving themback toyour PC.
JX-MP256FM Digital AudioPlayer -37-
Page 22
The folder structure onpage 37belongs to the JX-MP256FM, and was takenfrom aPC
to which the unit was connected through its USB cable. It’s typical of how one might set
up the folders in a portable device like the JX-MP256FM. Notice that theunit (while
connected) has been assigned as a “Removable Drive” in the PC, and been given the drive designation of (E:). In the unit’s root directory, 9folders have been created, and 5of
which are devoted tospecific artistsand bands(Dionne Warwick, Earth, Wind &Fire, Hall and Oates, Heart, and Tower of Power). Another folder, called Oldies, itself contains
folders (as indicated by the to its left). There arealso three more folders createdfor non-musical purposes, and theyare FileStorage, Photos, and RECORD, for microphone recordings (see page 37).Notice thatalong withthe 9folders inthe rootdirectory, there
are 3 “loose” music files (2MP3s and 1 WMA). In a portable device, it’s normally best to
avoid placing loose filesin theroot directory, butthese wereleft thereintentionally for purposes of illustration. Fromthe attachedPC, new folderscan be created in the
portable device, into which any “loose” or “wayward” files can be placed.
When the Oldies folder isopened (by clickingon the to its left), itis shownto contain 4 folders, as seen inthe figurebelow. These four foldershelp tobetter dividethe Oldies
-38- JX-MP256FM Digital Audio Player
folder, and because they areat alevel belowthe Oldies folder, they arecalled
subfolders.
There is no hard and fast rule as to howfolders should be organized, and, infact, some people do not usefolders atall. Whateveryour preference, bear inmind thatwhen your
