Thank you for purchasing the JVC VN-A1U. To gain maximum benefit from this product, read this instruction manual carefully before use and retain it for future reference. The serial number is very important for maintaining quality of your product. At the time of purchase, check to see that the serial number is correctly printed on the bottom of the unit and that the serial numbers on the unit and warranty match.

3. All warnings on the product and in the operating instructions should be adhered to.
4. Unplug this appliance system from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
5. Do not use attachments not recommended by the appliance manu­facturer as they may cause hazards.
6. Do not use this appliance near water – for example, near a bath­tub, washbowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, etc.

Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to overturn.
8. Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are pro­vided for ventilation, and to insure reliable operation of the appli­ance and to protect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the appliance on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This appliance should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register. This appliance should not be placed in a built-in in­stallation such as a bookcase unless proper ventilation is provided.
9. This appliance should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supplied to your home, consult your dealer or local power company. For appliance designed to operate from battery power, refer to the operating instructions.
10. This appliance system is equipped with a 3-wire grounding type plug (a plug having a third (grounding) pin). This plug will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electri­cian to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety pur­pose of the grounding plug.

11. For added protection for this product during a lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it form the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.
12. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not locate this appliance where the cord will be abused by persons walking on it.
13. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the appliance.
14. Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in fire or electric shock.

Operating Environment
The environment described below is necessary for operation of the VN-A1U. A PC running Microsoft Windows 98, Me, XP Home, NT (Service Pack5 or higher), 2000 Professional (Service Pack1 or higher) or XP Professional.
CPU Pentium II 300 MHz or higher (Pentium III 500 MHz or higher is recommended)
Memory capacity 64 MB or more (128 MB or more is recommended)

10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX networks mutually connected by hubs, etc., that conform to IEEE 802.3 or IEEE802.3u.
The VN-A1U and a PC can be connected directly by using a cross cable. (Although rare, the use of cross cables is not possible with some LAN boards.)
When used with 100 BASE-TX, please use a CAT-5 cable.

When the basic software requires higher environments than described as operating environmnts for this software in INSTRUCTIONS, please follow these requirements firstly.

To ensure correct usage
To save electricity, be sure to turn off the power to the system when not in use.
This product is for indoor use. It cannot be used outside.
The product cannot be used and should not be installed in the following
locations.
• Locations subject to rain or water.
• Locations with hot air or oil vapors, such as in kitchens, etc.
• Locations where the allowed ambient operating temperature (0° C – 40° C) is exceeded.
• Locations with radiation, x-rays or where strong electrical or magnetic waves are generated.
• Locations with vibrations.
• Locations with much dust.
Insufficient dissipation of heat from the unit may cause damage. Never block or obstruct the ventilation around the unit.
Use caution to avoid catching on the sensor insert button of the alarm input/output jack. In case this happens and disconnection from the alarm input/output jack occurs, return to the original location and use there.
Cleaning
• Turn OFF the power before cleaning.
The date and time setups are backed up by a lithium battery, which is built into the unit. When the backup becomes unavailable, the lithium battery should be replaced. Please contact the person in charge of professional camera at your nearest JVC-authorized service agent.

VN-A1U Setup
Before starting setup
It is necessary to set an IP address for each VN-A1U unit. Use the following
procedure for the setup of each unit. (If the power is not turned on, the
installation of multiple VN-A1U can be performed at one time.)
1.Install the VN-A1U * In case of installation in a location where the power cannot easily be
turned on, complete steps 2 - 5 before step 1.
2.Connect the VN-A1U to the network. (The power to the VN-A1U should be ON.)
3.Set the VN-A1U IP address.
* When setting the VN-A1U IP address, be sure to contact the network
administrator for assignment or approval. When installing the second and following units, reboot the PC and then return to step 2.
4.Enable the VN-A1U IP address. (Turn the VN-A1U power off and then on again.)
5.Register the connection point.
* This registers the VN-A1U IP address data in the PC.

Remote indicator
Lights in green when the unit is capable of being remotely controlled by an external device through COM1 7 or COM2 8. Turned off when the RS-422/485 signal from the device connected to COM2 8 can be output to the camera connected to COM1 7.

Factory reset switch
Pressing and holding this switch for more than 2 seconds resets all settings to the factory defaults with the exception of the clock setting.

Composite video input
BNC connector to be connected to the composite video output connector of the camera.

1. Connecting to the network
Turn on the power of only one VN-A1U unit. When network connection is completed and the power is turned on, the VN-A1U unit will be connected to the network at the following IP address.
Factory default IP address: 192. 168. 0. 2
* Use a straight cable when connect-
ing to a HUB. Use a cross cable when connecting directly to a PC.
About the power supply connection cable
Length: Should be 30 m (98 feet) or less.
Recommended cable type: UL1007, UL1015 or equivalent

CAUTION
When shipped from the factory, the IP address of all VN-A1U units is set to
192.168.0.2 Consequently, if multiple units are installed in the same LAN environment and the power is turned ON at the same time, duplication of IP addresses will occur and correct access will not be possible. Always turn the power on for only one unit at a time. Once duplication of IP addresses has occurred (and after confirming that only one VN-A1U exists in the same LAN environment), wait a while (10 minutes or longer), or turn off the power of all the network devices on the same LAN environment, before turning the power ON again. If this is not done, it may not be possible to access the VN-A1U.

Cable connection and disconnection
Press the sensor insert button when connecting and disconnecting cables. After connecting or disconnecting, make sure the sensor insert button returns to its original position.
About the alarm IN/OUT connection cables
Length: use cables with a length of 50 m(164 feet) or less.
Recommended model: UL1007, UL1015 or equivalent cable with
wire equivalent to AWG #22 - AWG #18.
CAUTION
External noise may affect the alarm working properly even with a cable length of 50m or less. In such cases, it is necessary to either change to the use of shielded cable to prevent influence by noise or to change the wiring route to avoid passing close to the source of the noise.

3. Installation of the Compact Flash Card
The images before and after a detection of motion can be saved in the Compact Flash card (max. 512 MB capacity).
3-1 Removing the front cover
Remove the two screws 1and remove the front cover.
3-2 Inserting/removing the Compact Flash card
Insert the Compact Flash card horizontally into the insertion slot 2. To remove the Compact Flash card, pull the eject lever up and push it.

4. Setting the VN-A1U IP address
4-1 Changing the IP address of the PC
Display the network settings panel by selecting Settings from the Start button, then selecting Control Panel and Network, in that order.

Click OK and then reboot the PC.
Set the Subnet Mask to a value suitable for the setting operation. If the value is unknown, check with the network administrator.

5. Installing the software
5-1 Installing the controller software
Load the V.Networks Controller CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The setup program is in the \JVC folder on the CD-ROM. Execute \JVC\Setup.exe and follow the displayed instructions to setup the software.
5-2 Installing the V.Networks Setup Tool
Execute the \JVC\setup\Setup.exe file on the CD-ROM, and then complete the installation as directed by the messages on the screen.

Enter the IP address of the VN-A1U to be set up. The factory-set IP address is: 192.168.0.2
6. Setup of the V.Networks Setup Tool
When installation is completed, select Start - Program - V.NETWORKS to invoke the VN-A1U Setup Tool.
Settings are updated at the time when OK is clicked.
The VN-A1U ID corresponds to the identification code located on the VN-A1U body. Only alphanumerics can be entered. The user does not participate directly. Normally, consecutive numbers such as
CAM00001, CAM00002.....
will be set.
Change to the IP address assigned or approved by the network administrator. (192. 168. 0. 2 is used as an example in the diagram.)
Enter a value suitable for the setting operation. If a suitable value is not known, check with the network administrator.

Click to display the Compact Flash information.

6-1 Motion Detection Setting
The VN-A1U incorporates a motion detection function and its parameters can be setup by the user. The motion detection is based on the error between the reference image and current image. Click the MotionDetection button in the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool window to display the MotionDetection window as shown below.

The display is in red only when the motion detect alarm is activated. For details, please see 6-5, "Setting the Alarm." * With the factory setting, the motion detect alarm is not activated.
The squares in which a motion is detected are displayed in red.
Set the motion detection area by clicking and dragging using the left button of the mouse. The squares indicate the minimum area units. A set area can be canceled by clicking and dragging using the right button of the mouse. The maximum number of squares composing the area that can be selected is "20 x 15 = 300".

When the Detail button is clicked the MotionDetection Setting window is displayed as shown below. Set the motion detection parameters in this window. Each parameter is set to the luminance value per area (8 x 8 = 64-pixel array) as a target value.
Sets the motion detection threshold values.
Y Threshold :Threshold of the difference in luminance with
respect to the reference image.
% :Threshold of the percentage of pixels
exceeding the Y threshold among the 64 pixels in an array. When this is set to 50”, 50% of the 64 pixels (32 pixels) becomes the actual threshold value.
Noise Filter :Threshold of the average luminance level
with respect to the reference image. Increasing this value helps to reduce erroneous motion detection due to noise, etc.
Check to set the area outside the set area as the motion detection area.
Click to force the reference image to be updated.
Motion detection is identified when a motion lasts for a longer period than the period specified here.
Set the intervals for updating the reference image. When “0” is set, the reference image will be updated automatically after the motion has not been detected for a certain period of time.

6-2 Recording Setting
When a Compact Flash card is installed, the VN-A1U can record images according to various trigger conditions. Click the Recording button in the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool window to display the Recording window as shown below.
Set the condition for triggering recording. Check the desired boxes to enable them.
Set the recording time before and after triggering. Every time a triggering occurs, CompactFlash records an image for the period specified here.
CAUTION
The maximum recording time is determined according to the recording frame rate and image size. With certain image compression rates and objects, it may sometimes not be possible to record images for the specified period of time.
NOTE
When the compression rate is 2 and the recording frame rate is 30 fps, the total recording time before and after recording is: Image size 640 x 480 : Approx. 4 seconds including before and after triggering. Image size 320 x 240 : Approx. 8 seconds including before and after triggering. Image size 160 x 120 : Approx. 16 seconds including before and after triggering.

6-4 Current Time Setting
Set the internal clock of the VN-A1U. The clock can be set either based on the PC’s clock or manually. The date and time data recorded in the CompactFlash card is the data based on this clock. Click the PC Time button in the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool window to display the following window.
Click either button to set the clock based on the PCs clock. When the confirmation message is displayed, click OK to set the date and time.

6-5 Alarm Setting
When the Alarm button of the V.NETWORKS setup tool is clicked, the screen shown below will be displayed.
ALARM DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION
When there is an input to an ALARM INPUT terminal or a motion is detected, the VN-A1U functions for transmitting the information to the clients (V.Networks controllers) through the network. This function can be set up using the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool.

In Alarm 1, Alarm 2 and Motion Detection, select OFF or ON for the input to each terminal. When ON is selected, also check the Alarm Output if the alarm signal should be output.
In Relay Alarm setup to set an alarm or motion detection input received after an Alarm 1, Alarm 2 or motion detection input has been received, to be identified as an interlocked alarm. Check Use Relay Alarm and specify the alarm occurrence sequence and the time interval between alarms. If the alarm signal is to be output in the case of an interlocked alarm, check the Alarm
Output checkbox.
CAUTION
When Relay Alarm is set, following alarm operations will not activate. Example: If relay alarm is generated in the order of Alarm 1 Alarm 2, the operating mode becomes: Operation of Alarm 1 Operation of relay alarm. The operation of Alarm 2 itself will not be executed.

Retry is used to set the number of times the clients (V.Networks controllers) are notified of the occurrence of an alarm input. (The number of times can be set to 1, 2, or 3.) In a LAN environment, Alarm notifications may fail. It is for that reason that the alarm notification count can be set to up to 3 times. However, even when the alarm notification count is set to more than 1, the specified operation performed by the clients (V.Networks controllers) is only once.
In Alarm force output, pressing the Output button causes the cameras alarm output terminal to output a signal according to the current alarm output port setup. This function can be used to check the devices connected to the output port.
Out port setting includes the following settings:
OFF/ON: Determine whether or not an alarm is to be output. Output value: Determine whether the High or Low signal will be output
when an alarm occurs. Enter the time for continuous signal output of selected output value (High or Low) in the text box below. Example: High 100ms
The High signal will be output for 100ms. After that, the output value will change to Low.
Initialization: Determine whether or not the alarm signal will be output
one time when the power is turned on.

which the output is to be sent.

The list of alarm broadcast client (IP address and port number) currently registered in the VN-A1U can be displayed by pressing List. The PCs that satisfy the following conditions are displayed.
• The V.Networks controller has been started and is connected to the VN-A1U subject to setup.
• Checks are placed at Settings and Alarm Reg.
Return to Alarm Setting window by clicking OK.
PCs can be deleted from the broadcast client list by selecting the IP address and clicking Delete.
CAUTION
Once the PC is deleted from the Broadcast client list, the alarm does not function.

Password function
An access protection using a password is provided to regulate connecting PCs (users). Password setting and cancellation is performed by the V.NETWORKS setup tool. Passwords for User, Operator and Administrator can be set for each of the privilege levels.
CAUTION
Never forget the current password because the current password setting cannot be changed unless it matches the password setting.
The password setting screen is displayed by clicking the User, Operator or Administrator button on the Password Setting screen of the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool.
The change will be made when OK is clicked.
6-6 Setting the Password
To set password protection or change the password, enter the same both above and below.(within 8 alphanumeric characters) The entered characters are shown as "*". To cancel the password protection, make the setting so that nothing is entered at all.
For a VN-A1U for which password protection is set, the password requesting screen appears. If the Administrator password does not match, it will not be possible to perform the VN-A1U setup.A password will not be requested when the lower level password(s) has been set but the higher has not been set. 6-7 Making the set IP address valid
When the IP address is changed, the pan and tilt mechanism will work and the IP address becomes valid after the VN-A1U is reset.
6-8 Special Notes on the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool
Restoring a work PC IP address
Using the same procedure as in 4-1, select Settings from the Start button, then select Control Panel and Network, Change to the original TCP/IP properties setting that you made a note and then restore a work PC IP address. After restoration is completed, follow the messages of OS and reboot the PC.
CAUTION
The V.NETWORKS Setup Tool is software that is only required when the setup is performed. Therefore, please uninstall the software following completion of the setup unless there is special reason for leaving it on the PC. When setting the second or following units, reboot the PC and then return to 1 (page 16). After setting of all the VN-A1U units is completed, proceed with the next procedure.
SEARCH FUNCTION
The Search button is used to find the V.NETWORKS IP addresses currently connected to the network. When Search button is pressed, the Search screen will be displayed. When Start Search button is pressed, a list of the V.NETWORKS IP addresses currently connected to the network will be displayed. Timeout is used to set the search time and can be set to 0 - 30 sec.
CAUTION
When your own PC and a V.NETWORKS of a different subnet are connected on a LAN, connection will not be possible even if the search is successful. In such cases, change to an appropriate IP address on your PC and then try connection.

7. Registering connection points
Start the V.Networks controller (VN-A1U connection software: vn-a1u.exe), open the File menu, select New and register the connection point.
Enter the IP address and name of the VN-A1U connection point. (192.168.0.2 is used as an example in the diagram.)
The folder "VN-A1U Name" will be created automatically in the folder specified here. Recorded files will be saved here. (Refer to page 53 recording function.) "Start recording on connection" determines whether or not recording will start automatically upon the connection of VN-A1U.
Clicking the OK button displays the setting confirmation screen.
Click OK to complete the registration.

8. FTP Client Function
This function uploads images (still images) in the VN-A1U periodically to an existing FTP server. This makes possible an image distribution service from a server and a significant increase in the number of clients to whom images are distributed.

Refer to Software Installation on page 23 for the installation procedure. When the V.Networks controller (vn-a1u.exe) is executed, a logo will be displayed and then the following screen will appear.
Starting connection and changing connection points
Connection points can be selected from this pulldown menu.
* The V.Networks Controller enables connection to a VN-A1U, VN-C1U, VN-
C2U, VN-C3U or VN-C30U (JPEG only) unit.
* In the case of a connection point provided with a password, you are asked

Image quality adjustment
Select Settings from the menu and then select Quality.
Image setup
The setting will be effective.
Clicking Default returns the image quality to the factory default settings.
The compression rate is inversely proportional to the image quality. As the value gets smaller, the image quality increases but the data size becomes larger.
Color saturation adjustment As the value gets higher, saturation gets stronger. A small value makes it weaker.
This adjusts the image brightness.

Setting the frame rate
Select Settings from the menu and then select Framerate.
This is to set the upper limit of transmission frame rate from VN-A1U.
CAUTION
The actual frame rate depends on the operational environment (PC specifications, image compression, network infrastructure, etc.) and may be different from the transmission frame rate. In practice, the higher transmission frame rate is set up, the more bandwidth is required. Therefore, try to set the lower transmission frame rate if relatively low bandwidth is available for VN-A1U.

Changing resolution and inverting the image
Select View from the menu.
The resolution can be selected from 160 x 120, 320 x 240 or 640 x 480. Depending on the installation, select Normal or Upside Down.
Click the right button of the mouse on the screen and select one of the following: 160 x 120, 320 x 240 or 640 x 480. Clicking Properties displays the MAC address, IP address, unit name, program version, and storage destination.
ON-SCREEN RESOLUTION CHANGE
The resolution can also be changed on the screen with the following procedure.
Display the motion detection information.
When checked: The area where motion is detected is displayed in colors. (Squares are also displayed at the same time.) If unchecked: The motion detection information is not displayed.

Alarm setting
Select Setting from the menu, then select Alarm.
This operation sets the operations that the VN-A1U executes upon receipt of the four kinds of alarm signals.
With [MotionDetection Alarm], [Alarm 1] and [Alarm 2], the operations to be executed upon reception of the three kinds of alarm signals from the VN-A1U can be set by checking the following checkboxes.
There are four functions as follows:
• Message
Pop-up the message entered in the text box. (There is a limit on how many characters that can be displayed.)
• Recording
Start recording the images.
• Playing wave file
Play a specified wave file . Any wave files can be specified from the Browse button.
• Execute application file
Execute a specified application file. Any execute (.exe) files can be specified from the Browse button.
Select Non-Stop or Stop in 1 minute after the recording starts, Stop in 1 minute is used for saving space on the hard disk. When Stop in 1 minute is selected, normal recording specified on the controller software also stops in 1 minute after the alarm is received.

When relay alarm setting is performed using the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool, this window becomes active. The program to be executed and the wave file to be played back when a relay alarm is generated can be set in advance. (For these items, please see the previous page.)

To enable the MotionDetection Alarm, Alarm 1, Alarm 2 and/or Relay Alarm, it is necessary to check () Alarm Reg.
CAUTION
• When a large wave file (*.wav) is selected, the alarm operation may be delayed depending on the PC specifications. Try to select a relatively small wave file.

Time stamp setting
Select Setting from the menu and then select Time Stamp.
Sets whether the time stamp should be displayed or not. When Visible is checked, the date and time are displayed superimposed on the camera image. During playback, the date and time of the recording are displayed.
Changing the time stamp display position
On the screen, hold down the Shift key and click the left button of the mouse at the position where time stamp is to be displayed.
Sets the color of the characters of the time stamp and the background color.
Transparency ... The background becomes transparent.

Changing property
TThe information related to connections and setting when the connection was first defined can be changed. (However, it is only the VN-A1U information in the offline mode that can be changed.)
Select Setting - Property.
Select the camera for which the properties should be changed from the V.Networks Name designations pull-down menu. Camera property and Save in cannot be changed.
It is possible to make the settings as when the properties were first created. Following these changes, click the OK button to complete the changing of properties.

Recording function
* The recorded file is saved in the
folder specified when the initial setup was performed.
This function is to continuously record the images of connected VN-A1U onto automatically created folder with “VN-A1U Name.”
• Avoid continuous recording for a long period of time. When playing back a file recorded by continuous recording for a long period of time, the memory of the computer may become insufficient, and playback may not be possible.
• Never attempt to change the contents of the folder specified as the recorded file save destination. If operations such as changing of the file name are done, normal playback may become impossible.

Click the PLAY button.

This window only appears during viewing of the image from the camera.

Snapshot function
The V.Networks Controller can save any one moment in the displayed image as a still image file in the JPEG format.

During playback, the slide bar moves toward the right in accordance with the playback time. By dragging the slide bar with the mouse, the file can be played back as desired.

CAUTION
Saved images can be displayed with ordinary viewer software. However, inverted images cannot be displayed inverted. Colors may also differ from those seen on the V.Networks controller screen.

Limitatin of Recording and Playback
It is not possible to randomly access 2 Gbyte or larger file on the normal Windows application. Do not record or playback 2 Gbyte or larger file with V.Networks Controller. Approximate recording hours in capacity of 2 Gbyte is as follows;
Recording capacity mainly depends on the image size setting.
160 x 120 : 20 hours 320 x 240 : 6 hours 640 x 480 : 2 hours (Recording at 5 Frame/s, each single image is approx. 5 kbyte at 160 x 120, 15 kbyte at 320 x 240 and 50 kbyte at 640 x 480)
CAUTION
The motion jpeg files (*.mjp) recorded by other kinds of standard controller (like a VN-C3U controller) can not be played back with this V. Networks Controller. Please use the "File Converter" and convert into the new format (*.rec) prior to playing back.

Motion detection standby
Open the File menu and select MotionDetect Standby.

Troubleshooting
An IP address changed with the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool has been forgotten.
The Search button of the V.NETWORKS Setup Tool can be used to acquire the IP addresses of V.NETWORKS cameras connected to the network.
If the desired information cannot be found by viewing the vsetup file, this must be handled as a repair. Please consult your local dealer.
Recording is not possible.
It is possible to delete the folder used to save images. Check to make sure the folder exists.
It is possible for the disk to become full. Check the available capacity of the disk.
Time is required for cancellation when "Connecting..." is displayed.
Once the connection operation starts, cancellation is not possible for a period of several seconds.

The colors are not satisfactory.
Check the color adjustments of the display or video card. The colors displayed by different PC display monitors and video cards will differ to some degree. Improvement is sometime possible by adjusting the color settings of the display monitor. Depending on the video card, colors can sometimes be adjusted using Screen Properties (click the right mouse button on the desktop.)
Switching to True Color (24-bit) display Colors are sometimes not natural at the High Color (16-bit) or lower setting. It is recommended that you use True Color.
The image size and position change spontaneously.
When one VN-A1U unit is connected to several PCs, the last PC to operate and set the VN-A1U unit will have priority.
VN-A1U connection is not possible or the connection has been broken.
When there are multiple occurrences of broadcasts, collisions, etc., or when the network status is not normal, it may become impossible to connect the VN-A1U or the connection may be broken.
