Disconnect the mains plug to shut the power off completely (the STANDBY lamp goes off). When installing the apparatus, ensure that the plug is easily accessible. The F button in any position does not disconnect the mains line.

• When the system is on standby, the STANDBY lamp lights red.

• When the system is turned on, the STANDBY lamp goes off. The power can be remote controlled.

How to read this manual

• This manual explains the operations assuming that you will use the remote control. Some buttons on the main unit are the same as those on the remote control. You can use either button in this case.

• Some diagrams in this manual are simplified or exaggerated for the purpose of explanation.

• You can operate some functions differently from the explanation given in this manual.

• Depending on the disc/file, you may not obtain the explained result even after following the operation in this manual.

• The following marks refer to the usable discs/files for the explained function.

Inserting the batteries into the remote control

Insert the batteries into the remote control by

matching the polarity (+ and −) correctly.

NOTE

• Make sure that the antenna conductors do not touch any other terminals. This could cause poor reception.

• When using an antenna other than those supplied with this system, refer to the operation manuals for the antenna and converter for details of connection.

• When positioning the antennas, find the best position for reception while listening to an actual radio program (refer to “Listening to radio broadcasts” on page 15).

• You cannot receive an FM/AM radio broadcast without the antenna connection.

Connecting the speakers and subwoofer

Connect the speakers to the main unit by connecting the colored connectors to the same color terminals on the rear of the main unit.

■ IMPORTANT

• Improper speaker cable connection reduces the stereo effect and sound quality.

• The supplied left/right speakers are magnetically shielded, but color irregularity may occur on the TV depending on some conditions. To prevent color irregularity, set up the speakers following the instructions below. (The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded.)

1. Turn off the main power of the TV before

setting up the speakers.

2. Place the speakers enough distance from the

TV so that they do not cause color irregularity on the TV.

3. Wait for approximately 30 minutes before

turning on the main power of the TV again.

CAUTION

• The supplied speakers are manufactured exclusively for use with the supplied main unit as parts of this system. Do not connect the supplied speakers to devices other than the supplied main unit. Doing so may damage the speakers.

• Do not connect external speakers together with the supplied speakers. The change in impedance may damage the main unit and the speakers.

The left and right speakers can be fitted onto commercially available speaker stands. Before fitting

This system is designed to provide virtual surround sound by positioning the 3 speakers in front. (The set of the left and right speakers and the subwoofer refers to 2.1 channel.) The front surround function processes input signals to create a realistic sound field.

Connecting the docking station for iPod

CAUTION

• The left and right speakers can be installed on a wall.

• When installing the speakers on a wall, be sure to have the speakers installed by qualified personnel.

• DO NOT install the speakers on the wall by yourself to avoid unexpected damage from them falling off the wall due to incorrect installation or weakness in wall structure.

• Care must be taken in selecting a location for speaker installation on a wall. Injury to personnel or damage to devices may result if the installed speakers interfere with daily activities.

CAUTION

• Do not touch the pins of the [iPod] terminal on the rear of the main unit or the pins of the docking station for iPod.

• Do not carry the main unit with the docking station for iPod connected. You may drop them and damage the connector part.

Connecting a TV

After connecting a TV, follow the instructions on page 10.

■ IMPORTANT

• Connect the main unit directly to a TV (or a monitor) without routing through a video cassette recorder (VCR). Otherwise picture distortion may occur during playback. (Routing the connection through a VCR, however, does not affect the audio quality.)

This system can output uncompressed digital video signals to a TV compatible with HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface).

NOTE

• The HDMI video signal type can be checked with the “HDMI” indicator in the display window. (Refer to “Selecting the video signal type” on page 10.)

• If the picture is distorted while an HDMI TV is connected, turn off the main unit and turn it on again.

• A TV compatible with HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) can also be connected to the [HDMI MONITOR OUT] terminal, so that the uncompressed HD video signal type can be output as well.

• This system is compatible with some basic functions of HDMI CEC. (Refer to page 50.)

• You can output the audio signal from the [DIGITAL OUT] terminal when “DVD”, “USB” or “DGTL IN” is selected as the source in the display window.

• When “DGTL IN” is selected as the source in the display window, digital audio from the [DIGITAL OUT] terminal is decoded to a linear PCM signal.

Selecting the video signal type

To view an image on the TV screen, select the video signal type correctly according to the TV after connecting the main unit to the TV.

• Slide the remote control mode selector to [SHIFT].

4 Press 2 or 3 (cursor) to select the

video signal type suitable for the TV.

• When the TV is connected to the [VIDEO] terminal, select “480I”.

• When the TV is connected to the [COMPONENT] terminals, select “480P”. (If the TV is not compatible with a progressive video signal, select “480I”.)

• When the TV is connected to the [HDMI MONITOR OUT] terminal, the video signal type can be selected as instructed below.

- Select “AUTO” for normal usage. (the ini-

tial setting)

- Select “480P”, “720P”, “1080I” or “1080P”

as needed. (The selectable settings differ according to the resolution of the connected TV.)

• You can also select the video signal type by repeatedly pressing [SCAN MODE].

NOTE

• “480”, “720” and “1080” refer to the number of the scanning lines. Generally, the larger the number, the better picture that can be obtained.

• “I” refers to the interlaced format. “P” refers to the progressive format. A better picture can be obtained in the progressive format than in the interlaced format.

• When an HDMI video signal is output, the “HDMI” indicator lights up in the display window.

• When an HD video signal is output, the “HD” indicator lights up.

• When “480P”, “720P” or “1080P” is selected, the “PROGRESSIVE” indicator lights up in the display window.

5 Press [ENTER].

1 Turn on the main unit.

• Refer to “Turning on/off the main unit” on page 11.

2 Press [DVD 3] or [USB 3].

• When a disc is loaded or a USB device is connected, press 7 to stop playback.

3 Press [SCAN MODE].

• The current video signal type appears.

Example: When “480I” is selected as the

video signal

NOTE

• It is recommended that you slide the remote control mode selector to [AUDIO] after selecting the video signal type. Most of the other functions can be used when the remote control mode selector is at [AUDIO].

• To check the compatibility of your TV, contact your local JVC customer service center.

• Even if the main unit is turned off, the video signal type setting is stored.

■ IMPORTANT

• Slide the remote control mode selector to [AUDIO].

• The power of the main unit turns on and the [STANDBY turns off.

• Press [AUDIO main unit) again to turn off the power of the main unit. (The main unit enters the standby mode.)

• With the power off, pressing any of the following buttons also turns on the main unit.

- [DVD 3], [USB 3], [iPod 3], [FM/AM], [AUDIO IN/DIGITAL IN], 3 (playback) or 0 on the remote control

- s3 (playback) or 0 on the main unit

The function assigned to the pressed button starts working at the same time. (When 3 (playback) is pressed, “DVD” is selected as the source in the display window.)

• An internal cooling fan turns on when the main unit turns on. This is to prevent overheating of the main unit. The cooling fan produces noise during operation. This is not a malfunction.

Press [VOL +] or [VOL –] repeatedly.

• You can also adjust the volume by turning the [VOLUME] control on the main unit.

Turning off the sound temporarily

Press [MUTING].

• Press [MUTING] again or [VOL +] or [VOL –], or turn the [VOLUME] control on the main unit to restore the sound. The sound is also restored when the main unit is turned off once and turned on.

Adjusting the treble/bass

1 Press [TREBLE/BASS] repeatedly

to select “TRE” or “BASS” in the display window.

Adjusting the volume level for surround/subwoofer sound

You can adjust the volume level for the left and right surround sound and the subwoofer sound respectively.

1 Press [SPK LEVEL] repeatedly to

select “SURR” or “SUBWFR” in the display window.

• “SURR” refers to the left and right surround sound.

• “SUBWFR” refers to the subwoofer sound.

2 Press [LEVEL +] or [LEVEL

repeatedly to adjust the volume level.

• The adjustable volume range is from -6 to +6.

• Adjustable sound quality is from -10 to +10.

• Each time you press [SURROUND], the display changes in the display window as follows.

-“AUTO SUR”

When a multi-channel signal is input, surround sound is automatically produced.

- “MOVIE”

Surround sound suitable for a movie or multichannel signal is produced.

- “WIDE/2CH”

When a 2ch signal is input, surround sound is produced. The sound is broader than the one with “MOVIE”.

-“SUPER W”

Surround sound broader than the one with the “WIDE/2CH” is produced.

NOTE

• Depending on the signal type, surround sound may not be produced as the surround mode setting.

• During playback, when you change the surround mode setting, sound from the [DIGITAL OUT] terminal may be intermittent. Before recording sound to an external device, select the desired surround mode setting.

• This function does not work for a JPEG/ASF/ DivX/MPEG1/MPEG2 file.

Selecting the headphone surround mode

You can listen to surround sound via headphones connected to the [PHONES] terminal.

Press [SURROUND].

• Each time you press [SURROUND], the setting toggles between “H.P. SURR” and “H.PHONE” in the display window.

NOTE

• The [PHONES] terminal is for connecting a pair of headphones equipped with a stereo mini plug (not supplied). When headphones are connected, no sound is output from the speakers.

Sharpening the voice sound

This function allows you to easily understand dialog recorded on the disc/file even with the volume down low. This function is useful when you are watching a movie.

Selecting the surround volume level

You can increase the surround volume level. This function is effective for the following conditions: (1) When the surround mode is set to an item

other than “AUTO SUR” (Refer to page 12.)

(2) When the surround mode is set to “AUTO

SUR” and a DVD VIDEO, DVD AUDIO or DVD VR is played back (Refer to page 18.)

(3) When the surround mode is set to “AUTO

SUR” and the source is set to “DGTL IN” (Refer to page 17.)

1 Press [SETTING] repeatedly to

select “SURR VOL” in the display window.

2 Press [LEVEL +] or [LEVEL –]

repeatedly to select the desired setting in the display window.

• Each time you press [LEVEL +] or [LEVEL –], the surround volume level display changes to one of three levels. The surround volume level increases in the order of “SURR: NRML”, “SURR: MID” and “SURR: HIGH”.

• Select the surround volume level while listening to the actual sound to confirm the difference.

Using the sleep timer

When the time you specify elapses, the main unit automatically turns off.

Press [SLEEP].

• Each time you press [SLEEP], the time indicated in the display window changes. You can set the time to 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 or 180 minutes.

Locking disc ejection

You can lock the disc tray to prevent the disc from being ejected.

Hold down 0 on the main unit for one or more seconds while holding down 7 on the main unit.

If you attempt to open the disc tray by pressing 0, the disc tray does not open and “LOCKED” appears in the display window.

To cancel the disc ejection lock, press 0 on the main unit while holding down 7 on the main unit again. “UNLOCKED” is displayed in the display window.

• If an FM stereo broadcast is difficult to hear because of noise, you may be able to hear the broadcast more easily by pressing [FM MODE] to switch the sound to monaural reception. In this case, the “MONO” (monaural) indicator lights up in the display window. To return the sound to stereo reception, press [FM MODE] again. “AUTO” is displayed and the “ST” (stereo) indicator lights up in the display window.

Tuning in to a preset radio station

Presetting radio stations in the main unit allows you to easily tune in to a radio station.

• For some discs/files, sound is intermittent or no sound is produced during fast reverse/fast forward search.

• The selectable speeds and displays vary by the disc/file type.

You can skip within a file at approximately 5 minute intervals. This is useful especially when you want to skip within a long file.

Press 2 or 3 (cursor).

• Each time you press 2 or 3 (cursor), the playback position skips to the beginning of the previous or next interval. Each interval is approximately 5 minutes.

NOTE

• Intervals are automatically assigned from the beginning of a file.

• You can use this function only within the same file.

• You cannot change the picture magnification during slide-show playback of JPEG files.

• During ASF file playback, 5, /, 2 or 3 (cursor) may not work in step 2.

• When you magnify a picture, image quality may be deteriorated or the image may be distorted.

• It is recommended that you slide the remote control mode selector to [AUDIO] after using these functions. Most of the other functions can be used when the remote control mode selector is at [AUDIO].

• Pressing [AUDIO] repeatedly also changes the audio languages.

• Pressing [SUBTITLE] repeatedly turns the subtitle display on and off.

• You can only select these function settings when the disc/file contains multiple audio languages or subtitle languages.

• When a language code such as “AA” and “AB” is displayed, refer to “Language codes” on page

• When a DVD VR, VCD or SVCD is played back, “ST” (stereo), “L” (left) and “R” (right) are displayed on the TV screen.

Adjusting the picture quality (VFP)

Playing back the bonus group

Some DVD AUDIOs may have a special group, called “bonus group”. You can use this function when the “BONUS” indicator lights up in the display window.

the pin code (four digits).

• The method of obtaining a pin code differs depending on the disc.

4 Press [ENTER].

• When the correct pin code is entered, the “BONUS” indicator disappears in the display window and the playback of the bonus group starts.

• If an incorrect pin code is entered, try entering the correct pin code again.

Playing back a specified part repeatedly (A-B repeat playback)

You can play back a desired part repeatedly by specifying a start point (A) and an end point (B).

• Time search for a DVD VIDEO is from the beginning of the title.

• Time search for a DVD AUDIO is from the beginning of the track being played back.

• Time search for a VCD, an SVCD and a CD is as follows:

- When the disc is stopped, time search is from

the beginning of the disc.

within the track currently being played back.

Playing back sound from an iPod

You can listen to the sound from an iPod. You can also operate the iPod using the remote control of this system.

Playing back sound from an iPod

NOTE

• Depending on your iPod model or playback content, you may not obtain the explained result even after following the operation in this manual.

• This manual explains the operations assuming that you are using an iPod model with a click wheel on its front surface.

• You cannot view the video source and still picture from an iPod on a connected TV.

• Refer also to the operation manual for the iPod.

CAUTION

• Before connecting an iPod to the main unit, turn down the volume on the main unit to avoid unexpected loud sound right after the connection is made.

• You cannot use an iPod connected to the [USB MEMORY] terminal. Doing so displays “RESTRICT” or “NO USB” in the display window.

■ When the main unit is turned off

1 Attach the dock adapter and iPod

to the docking station for iPod.

• The dock adapter is supplied with the iPod or sold separately.

■ IMPORTANT

• Slide the remote control mode selector to [AUDIO].

NOTE

• To remove the dock adapter,

1 lift the slot with your fingertip, and then 2 pull out the dock adapter.

• Before attaching or removing the dock adapter, press [AUDIO F] to turn off the main unit.

• When attaching or removing the dock adapter, be careful not to damage the terminal on the docking station for iPod.

CAUTION

• Do not connect or disconnect the iPod when the main unit is on.

• Do not touch the pins of the iPod or the pins of the docking station for iPod.

• Do not carry the main unit with an iPod connected. You may drop them and damage the connector part.

2 Press [iPod 3].

• The main unit turns on, “IPod” and then “CONNECT” appear in the display window, and playback starts.

• If “NO CONNE” appears in the display window, press [AUDIO F] to turn off the main unit, and then return to step 1 to securely connect the iPod again.

• Instead of using the remote control in this step, you can use the buttons on the main unit. Repeatedly pressing [SOURCE] can select “IPod” as the source, and pressing 3 (playback) starts playback.

NOTE

• When you turn off the main unit or select a source other than “IPod” in the display window, the connected iPod enters sleep mode.

• If the sound is distorted when audio sources with high recording levels are played back, deactivate the equalizer on the iPod. You may be able to hear the sound more clearly.

• You cannot send any data from the main unit to the iPod.

• You cannot use the main unit to control an iPod other than those listed on page 45. In this case, you can operate the remote control to deactivate the iPod battery charge function so that you may be able to control the iPod. Refer to page 45.

Changing the time when the backlight turns on

Basic operations of HDMI CEC

Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is device controlling signals optionally employed for the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) standard. When devices equipped with CEC are connected, each device can control the others. This system is compatible with some basic functions of HDMI CEC.

• When you start playback on the main unit, the connected TV automatically turns on.

• When you select the main unit as the source of the TV, picture and sound from the main unit are automatically produced.

• When you select the menu screen language of the TV, and then the main unit is turned off and turned on again, the same language is automatically selected on the main unit. (The selectable languages are limited to those supported by this system.)

• As long as the connected TV is compatible, you can use the operations of the TV to start playback, adjust the volume and operate other functions on the main unit.

• This function is available only when the source is set to “DVD” or “USB”.

• This function is available when “ON 1” or “ON 2” is selected for “CEC” in the preference screen (refer to page 40).

• For details about the CEC function, refer to the operations manuals of the connected CEC devices.

• If the power cable is not connected to an AC outlet, the CEC function does not work, even when the main unit is connected to CEC devices.

• Not all HDMI devices are compatible with CEC. If the main unit is connected to non-CEC compatible devices, these devices cannot be controlled using the CEC function.

• The CEC function may not work with some CEC devices. (When the main unit is connected to a non-JVC product, the CEC function may not work.)

• The CEC function may not work depending on the settings or status of the main unit or the connected CEC devices.

• When connecting the main unit to a TV with an HDMI cable for the first time after purchase, confirm that “JVC” (the initial screen) appears.

• When you disconnect the HDMI cable and connect it again, confirm that “JVC” appears.

• If the CEC function does not work properly, select “OFF” for the “CEC” setting, and then select “ON 1” or “ON 2” again. (Refer to page 40.)

To minimize the need for servicing and maintain the high quality of this system, do not place the main unit in the following locations:

• In a position subject to high humidity or considerable dust

• On an uneven or unstable surface

CAUTION

• The operating temperature of this system is 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). Use in temperatures outside this range may cause a malfunction or damage the system.

Condensation

Under the following conditions, you may not be able to operate this system properly due to condensation formed on the lens of the main unit:

• When you have just started an air conditioner to warm your room

• When you have placed the main unit at an area with high humidity

• When you have moved the main unit from a cold place to a warm place

When condensation forms, leave the main unit turned on, wait for approximately 1 or 2 hours, and then operate the main unit.

Installation of the system

• Select a place that is level, dry and neither too hot nor too cold, and between 5°C and 35°C (between 41°F and 95°F).

• Leave sufficient distance between the system and the TV.

• Do not use the system in a place subject to vibration.

Power cable

• Do not handle the power cable with wet hands!

• A small amount of power is always consumed while the power cable is connected to the wall outlet.

• When unplugging the power cable from the wall outlet, always pull on the plug, not the power cable.

To prevent malfunctions of the system

• There are no user-serviceable parts inside. If anything goes wrong, unplug the power cable and consult your dealer.

• Do not insert any metallic object into the system.

Check the copyright laws in your country before recording from CDs. Recording of copyrighted material may infringe copyright laws.

Cleaning the main unit

When the operation panel becomes dirty, dust it with a soft dry cloth. When the operation panel is very dirty, wipe it with a cloth dampened with a small amount of a neutral detergent, and then wipe it with a soft dry cloth.

CAUTION

• Do not wipe the operation panel with thinners, benzenes or other chemical agents. Do not spray insecticides onto the operation panel. These may discolor and damage the surface.

When you are away

When away on travel or for other reasons for an extended period of time, disconnect the power cable plug from the wall outlet.

Care of the cabinet

When cleaning the system, use a soft cloth and follow the relevant instructions on the use of chemically-coated cloths. Do not use benzene, thinner or other organic solvents including disinfectants. These may cause deformation or discoloring.

If water gets inside the system

Turn the system off and disconnect the power cable plug from the wall outlet, then call the store where you made your purchase. Using the system in this condition may cause fire or electrical shock.

• On some DVD VIDEOs, DVD AUDIOs, VCDs, SVCDs or DivX files, their actual operation may be different from what is explained in this manual. This is due to the disc/file programming and disc/file structure, not a malfunction of this system.

Unplayable discs

• The following discs cannot be played back:

• DVD-ROM (except for MP3/WMA/JPEG/ASF/ DivX/MPEG1/MPEG2 format), DVD-RAM, CDROM, CD-I (CD-I Ready), Photo CD, SACD, etc.

• Playing back these discs generates noise and may damage the speakers.

• Damaged discs and discs with an unusual shape (other than a disc of 12 cm or 8 cm (4 ″ or

3 ″) in diameter) cannot be played back.

• JVC does not guarantee the operation and sound quality of discs not authorized by CD-DA, which is a CD specification. Before playback, confirm that the disc complies with this CD specification by checking the marks and reading notes printed on the package.

Playable MP3/WMA/WAV/JPEG/ ASF/DivX/MPEG1/MPEG2 discs/ files

• CDs recorded in the ISO 9660 format are playable (except CDs recorded in the “packet write” format (UDF format)).

• Files with an extension of “.mp3”, “.wma”, “.wav”, “.jpg”, “.jpeg”, “.asf”, “.divx”, “.div”, “.avi”, “.mpg”, “.mpeg” or “.mod” (extensions with mixed cases are also acceptable) are playable.

Notes on MP3/WMA/WAV/JPEG/ ASF discs/files

• A disc may not be played back, or reading it may take a long time depending on its recording conditions or properties.

• The time needed for reading varies with the number of groups or tracks (files) recorded on the disc.

• If characters other than single-byte alphanumeric characters are used in the file name of an MP3/WMA/WAV/JPEG/ASF file, the track/file name is not displayed correctly.

• The order of tracks/groups displayed on the MP3/WMA/WAV menu screen, and the order of files/groups displayed on the JPEG menu screen may be different from that of files/folders displayed on a computer monitor screen.

• Playing back an MP3/WMA file that contains a still image may take a long time. The elapsed time is not displayed until playback starts. This elapsed time may not be displayed correctly.

• For an MP3/WMA file, a disc with a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz and transmission rate of 128 kbps is recommended.

• This system is not compatible with an MP3i or MP3PRO file.

• This system can play back a baseline JPEG file, excluding monochromatic JPEG files.

• This system can play back JPEG data taken with a digital camera conforming to the DCF (Design Rule for Camera File System) standard (when a function such as the automatic rotation function of a digital camera is applied, the data may no longer conform to the DCF standard, and the image may not be displayed).

• If data has been processed, edited or restored with computer image editing software, the data may not be displayed.

• This system cannot play back animations such as MOTION JPEG files, still pictures (TIFF etc.) other than JPEG files, or image data with sound.

• The resolution of 640 x 480 pixels is recommended for JPEG files. If a file has been recorded at a resolution of more than 640 x 480 pixels, it may take a long time to display the file. An image with a resolution of more than 8 192 x 7 680 pixels cannot be displayed.

• The system supports ASF files recorded with the maximum bit rate of 384 kbps and an audio coder decoder of G.726.

• A WAV file with a sampling frequency of

44.1 kHz and a quantization bit rate of 16 bits is recommended.

• This system also supports the resolutions of 352 x 576/480 x 576/352 x 288 pixels (25 fps) and 352 x 480/480 x 480/352 x 240 pixels (30 fps).

• The profile and level should be MP@ML (Main Profile at Main Level)/SP@ML (Simple Profile at Main Level)/MP@LL (Main Profile at Low Level).

• Audio streams should conform to MPEG1 Audio Layer-2, MPEG2 Audio Layer-2 or Dolby Digital (MPEG2 files only).

Notes on files recorded on a connected USB device

• This system is compatible with USB 2.0 FullSpeed.

• This system may not play back some USB devices and some files.

• This system does not support DRM (Digital Rights Management).

• This system cannot recognize a USB device whose rating exceeds 5V/500mA.

• When connecting a USB device, refer also to its manual.

• Connect the USB device directly to the main unit without routing through a USB hub.

• Disconnect the USB device after stopping playback or turning off this system.

• The main unit can charge a USB device when the USB device is selected as the source.

• Always set the volume to the minimum on this system when connecting or disconnecting a USB device.

• JVC bears no responsibility for any loss of data on the USB device while using this system.

Caution for DualDisc playback

The Non-DVD side of a “DualDisc” does not comply with the “Compact Disc Digital Audio” standard. Therefore, the use of Non-DVD side of a DualDisc on this product is not recommended.

The battery of the iPod is running low.

The iPod is not compatible with the main unit.

The iPod battery charge function is deactivated.

An item other than “IPod” is selected as the source.

Check that the file types recorded on the USB device are compatible with this system.

Charge the battery.

Confirm the playable iPod type.

Activate the function.

Select “IPod”.

Many functions of this system are controlled by microprocessors that can be reset by recycling the power supply. If pressing any button does not result in the normal action, disconnect the power cable from the outlet, wait for a while, and connect the power cable again.
