Microphone input.
The microphone socket is either a 4 or a 6 pin connector. In the case of a 6 pin
connector, pin 5 and 6 must be shorted together when using an ordinary microphone.
These pins are used if a telephone handset are in use.
The microphone should have 600Ω impedance with a sensitivity of 5 mV.
4 - pin microphone socket.
The 4-pin microphone socket has the following pin assignment:

6 - pin microphone socket.
The 6-pin microphone socket has the following pin assignment:

Local remote switch.
The switch decides whether the audio and keying signals should be taken from the
microphone socket or from the remote connector.
In local position, both audio for the transmitter and the key signal (PTT) is taken from
the microphone input.
7In remote, audio and key signals are taken from the 600 remote line input/output.
The 600 remote line will also output the received audio in when the switch is in
remote position.
The built in loudspeaker will be connected in either position of the switch.

HEADPHONE CONNECTOR
The headphone connector outputs the audio to a headphone instead of the internal
loudspeaker.
The loudspeaker is automatically switched off when a jack is connected in the socket.
Volume control will work adjust the level in the headphone instead of the
loudspeaker.

Display.
Displays the operating frequency or information when storing or recalling memory
channels.

Function switch.
The switch has 4 positions.
In OFF position the transceiver is switched off.
In CH position 8 different channels can be selected with the SELECT switch.
In kHz position the frequency is changed in 25 kHz steps by the SELECT switch.
In MHz position the frequency is changed in 1 MHz steps by the SELECT switch.

VOLUME pot. meter.
By turning the knob clockwise the volume of the internal loudspeaker is increased.
The knob has no effect on the line output level.

SQUELCH button.
The SQUELCH button toggles the squelch on and off.
Squelch level is preset by an internal pot. meter.

SELECT switch.
The SELECT switch increments or decrements the channel, or frequency according to
the position of the FUNCTION switch.

Antenna connector (N-type)
The antenna connector should be connected to a 50 antenna.
The VSWR of the antenna must be less than 3:1, preferable less than 2:1 for a well
performing system.

REMOTE CONNECTOR (25 pin D-SUB)
The remote connector contains the necessary signals for interfacing the radio to
remote equipment. The connector has the following pin configuration.
PIN NO
1 SIDETONE OUTPUT
The sidetone output is a high impedance output which can be used to
monitor the transmitted audio. The signal is the AC component of the
demodulated signal when the transceiver is keyed.
2 REMOTE KEY DC INPUT
The remote key in is used to key the transceiver in the remote position.
The key signal must be a DC voltage between 5 and 30V referred to
GND (pin 14). The transceiver is keyed when the DC voltage is applied.
3/4 600 LINE INPUT/OUTPUT
The 600 line contains the received audio in receive mode and the audio
to be transmitted in transmit mode. The transceiver must be in REMOTE
position to use the line.
The transceiver can also be keyed with this line by using line loop keying
(making a DC path between the two lines).

5 EXTERNAL SPEAKER
The signal is connected in parallel with the internal speaker and has a
220 serial resistor (Front board, R4). The output could be used for an
external speaker with a high impedance (typically 1 k ) or to an external
amplifier. The signal is referenced to GND (pin 14).
6 NO CONNECTION
7 REMOTE KEY GND INPUT
The pin is used to key the transceiver with a GND signal in REMOTE
position, i.e. connecting this pin to GND (pin 14) will key the
transceiver.
8 MONITOR OUTPUT
The monitor output contains the received signal in receive mode and the
demodulated transmitted audio in transmit mode.
This signal could be connected to a monitoring device, i.e. a tape
recorder for recording the radio conversation. The output must be
connected to a high impedance input on a tape recorder (typ. 100 k ).
9 D1, REMOTE CHANNEL SELECTION, NSB

The pin is the second most significant bit of the remote channel selection.
A TTL signal is used to set the channel, the signal is active low (0V)
referred to GND (pin 14). The signal is pulled up internally.
10 STROBE, REMOTE CHANNEL SELECTION, STROBE

The pin is used to strobe the new remote channel selection that is set up
with D0, D1 and D2 into the transceiver. The strobe signal is 0V for at
least 1 ms, referred to GND (pin 14). The signal is pulled up internally.

NOTE! The signal is not connected to chassis.

The signals D0, D1, D2 and STROBE are only available when the transceiver is fitted with an
optional remote control interface. When this option is installed the transceiver has a µcontroller fitted in
the socket for IC3 on the remote control interface and the driver unit has been modified accordingly.
With this option installed, it is possible to control 6 channels from a remote position with the remote
control RC-3401.

15 LOCAL KEY INPUT.
The signal is connected in parallel with pin 3 on the microphone
connector and may be used for an external microphone, connected to the
rear of the transceiver. The signal should be referred to MIC. GND (pin
17). A closed contact between these pins will key the transceiver in local
position.
16 MICROPHONE INPUT
The signal is connected in parallel with pin 1 on the microphone
connector and may be used for an external microphone, connected to the
rear of the transceiver. The signal should be referred to MIC. GND (pin
17).
17 MIC. GND
This pin is connected in parallel with pin 4 on the microphone connector
and is the ground for the microphone signals (audio and PTT).
18 AUXILIARY CONTACT, NORMALLY CLOSED
The pin is connected to the normally closed pin of an auxiliary relay.
See pin 19 for operation.
19 AUXILIARY CONTACT, CENTER PIN
The pin is connected to the centre pin of an auxiliary relay.
The relay operates by default when the transceiver is keyed or the squelch
is open. It could be made to operate only if the transceiver is keyed by
removing link 1 on the line interface board.
Maximum current through the relay contacts should be limited to 200
mA.
20 AUXILIARY CONTACT, NORMALLY OPEN
The pin is connected to the normally open pin of an auxiliary relay.
See pin 19 for operation.
21 D0, REMOTE CHANNEL SELECTION, LSB

The pin is the least significant bit of the remote channel selection. A TTL
signal is used to set the channel, the signal is active low (0V) referred to
GND (pin 14). The signal is pulled up internally.

DC INPUT CONNECTOR
Input for external DC. The DC voltage should be at nominal battery voltage, app. 27V
and rated for 5A continuous current consumption.
The transceiver will automatically draw the current from this input when the AC
voltage is not present.
Pin A is 27 V DC.
Pin B is internal ground (0V) - not chassis!

AC INPUT CONNECTOR
Input for external AC.
AC is input between A and C, B is chassis ground.
The voltage should be 230VAC ± 10% or optionally 115 ± 10%.
To use 115VAC the transceiver must be rewired internally, see WIRING DIAGRAM
for details.

3. INSTALLATION
3.1. Equipment safety precautions
To avoid serious damage to costly components and modules, note the following before
switching ON the equipment:
Avoid installation in closed cabinets where ambient temperature may reach 40ºC. If necessary
ensure an air inlet in the bottom rear part of the cabinet to allow free air passage to the top of
it.
Avoid high operation duty cycle of the transmitter. 100% duty cycle only where ambient
temperature can be held lower than 40ºC.
Make sure all external connections are of good quality. Use only shielded wire for the remote
audio line and the remote frequency control lines.
Never switch on the transceiver unless an antenna with an impedance of 50Ω is connected.
VSWR should preferably be less than 1,5:1.
Check that the voltage for the radio is set correctly. The radio is normally supplied with
transformer wired for 230VAC, but it is possible to rewire it to 115VAC.
The input voltage is marked on the rear panel close to the AC socket.
3.2. Power ON
Before turning the power on for the first time, check that the voltage is correct, either 115 or
230 VAC. Connect AC or DC power in to the rear of transceiver, connect a microphone to
the microphone socket on the front panel - or a remote control to the remote connector on the
rear panel.
When the transceiver is switched on, the power indicators will lit. When the transceiver is
operated on AC power, both the AC and the DC indicator will be on. Operating the
transceiver from external DC power will light only the DC indicator.
No switch on the driver unit with the FUNCTION switch. A frequency will now be shown in
the display, this is the operating frequency.
The display only has 5 digits, that means some frequencies may be truncated. However, the
frequency step is always 25 kHz. For example does 132.32 mean 132.325 MHz.

3.3. Changing the operating frequency
The operating frequency could be changed directly by turning the FUNCTION switch to the
MHz or kHz position. If the FUNCTION switch is in either of these positions, the SELECT
switch will change the frequency in steps of either 1 MHz or 25 kHz.
Rotating the SELECT switch clockwise increase the frequency and anti clockwise decrease it.
3.4. Selecting pre-programmed channels
Put the FUNCTION switch in the CH position and rotate the SELECT switch till the
appropriate channel shows up. The channel is first shown with the CH number and after app.
1-2 seconds the frequency is shown. To operate on the recalled frequency just leave the
switch in the CH position.
3.5. Programming a channel
With the function switch in the CH position, select the channel to be changed. Then select the
desired frequency to be programmed as described in section 3.3. Now, push and hold in the
SQUELCH button while turning the SELECT button clockwise simultaneously. The new
frequency will now replace the old one in the selected channel.
3.6. SQUELCH on/off
The SQUELCH button toggles the squelch on and off simply by pressing in once. With the
squelch in off position background noise will be heard in the loudspeaker. When the squelch
is on, a marker will come up in the display window.
To adjust the squelch level see internal adjustments, section 4.
3.7. Keying the transmitter
The transceiver may be keyed in local position by the PTT connection on the microphone
socket, or at the rear connector pin 15 (LOCAL KEY INPUT).
In remote position the transceiver can be keyed either by line loop keying (phantom keying)
directly on the 600Ω line input, by applying a DC voltage to rear connector pin 2 (REMOTE
KEY DC INPUT), or by grounding rear connector pin 7 (REMOTE KEY GND INPUT).
When the transceiver is keyed, the carrier indicator will light and the receiver will be muted.

4. INTERNAL ADJUSTMENTS
4.1. SQUELCH ADJUSTMENT
On the receiver unit in the TR-6201 driver unit, a pot. meter, R14 is available. This pot.meter
can be used to adjust the squelch level, and is available on the left hand side of the TR-6201
driver unit.
The squelch is preset to open at approximately 2 µV and can be adjusted to open between and
2 and 50 µV.
To adjust the squelch use the following procedure:
• Open the top-cover of the transceiver, TR-6101, by turning the 2 screws in the cover a half
turn counter clockwise.
• Locate the TR-6201 driver unit and the trim.pot for the squelch adjustment on the left hand
side of this unit.
• Connect a signal generator with a modulation of 30% AM and modulated with a 1 kHz
audio signal to the antenna input socket. The level of the generator should be equal to the
level that is wanted for the squelch.
• Adjust the squelch-pot. first clockwise until it close (no signal is heard in the loudspeaker),
then counter clockwise until it opens again. Make sure that the squelch is on (a mark is
shown in the display).
• If no signalgenerator is available, and the squelch needs readjustment because of high
background noise, the squelch can be adjusted by first turning the pot.meter counter
clockwise until it opens the squelch. Then clockwise until no noise is heard, i.e. squelch is
closed.
• Replace the top cover of the transceiver.

4.2. MODULATION AND POWER ADJUSTMENT
The modulation and power of the transceiver can be adjusted using R33 (power) and R34
(modulation) on the transmitter unit. These pot. meters are available on the top of the TR6201 driver unit.
IMPORTANT !
The transceiver uses low level modulation. Low level modulation is characterised in that the
modulation is applied to an early stage of the transmitter. This is accomplished by the use of a
negative feedback so that the modulation is kept linear.
Since the driver unit, TR-6201, can also be used in a stand-alone system, the complete
transceiver has two separate directional coupler which can give feedback to the modulator. In
the TR-6201, transmitter unit, there is an automatic detector that selects between an external
feedback signal and the internal signal. This means that if the output of the driver unit is

measured directly on a power meter, the measured level will not be the same as the output
when connected to the 10W power amplifier in the TR-6101. Because of this, it is
recommended to have both the driver unit and the 10W amplifier connected together when
any adjustments are made, measuring the power and modulation on the N-connector output of
the TR-6101.
Also, it is important to notice that the modulation level and the output power are dependent
on each other. If the power is decreased the modulation level will increase and if it is
increased the mod.level will decrease. Therefore it is necessary to adjust both the power and
the modulation level if any of them are changed.
To do the adjustments, at least the following instruments should be at hand:
Power meter.
Modulation meter.
Distortion meter.
Audio generator.
Never attempt to adjust the output power to more than 10W, although it is possible to do such
adjustment, the result will be an distorted output signal because the transceiver could not
handle the peak power that will result when it is modulated. Remember that the peak power
will be 4 times higher than the carrier power with 100% modulation.
• Open the top-cover of the transceiver, TR-6101, by turning the 2 screws in the cover a half
turn counter clockwise.
• Connect the power, modulation and distortion meter to the output of the TR-6101
transceiver.
• Key the transmitter by connecting pin 3 and 4 of the microphone socket together.
• Measure the output power and adjust R33 to the correct level.
Turning the pot.meter clockwise will decrease the output power and opposite.
• Apply 10 mV, 1kHz modulation signal to pin 1 of the microphone socket and check the
modulation. The modulation should be adjusted to app. 80-85% with this input signal.
• Check that the distortion of the output signal is below 5%.
• Alternatively, the modulation could be checked with an RF oscilloscope.
• Replace the top-cover of the transceiver.
