6. Chimney
The fireplace must be flued with the recommended size flue (see specifications in front of this book on page 2) to the outside atmosphere not less than 4,6 metres high, and must be cowled. The flue must be swept with a brush before installation, and annually thereafter. DO NOT attach the gas fire to a flue pipe of less than 200 mm internal dimension.
5. Ventilation
Two ventilators to the outside must be provided, one at just below ceiling level and one at floor level. The existing regulation states that : an air supply must be provided up to 150 cm2 for 50 MJ input. This must be provided in the form of two ventilators, one at ceiling height and one at floor level. Most properties have a ventilator at ceiling height. The lower vent can be made quickly and cleanly using a core drill and fitting a sleeve and grids at each end and is best placed on the same wall as the fireplace, and close to the sides of the fire.
NB: Larger vents are required if venting to well ventilated adjacent room (300 cm

and minimise heat loss to the building.
8 Where offset in the flue is required,
do not bend more than 45 degrees. Jetmaster fabricated bends are available.
8. Fitting the Jetmaster Convector Box
(This work can be carried out by a person who is not registered LPGAS Association installer.)
1 Slide the convector box into the recess.
Ensure that no insulation or other material can fall and obstruct the fume outlets. Ensure that a seal is formed behind the frame of the convector box such that the only air which can reach the flue must travel in through the front of the convector box and up through the fume outlets.
2 Check that the flue outlets on top of
the convector box will not be obstructed. Where the convector box is to be installed beneath a particularly deep lintel supporting the chimney breast and the flue outlets might be partially obscured, steps must be taken to chamfer the underside of the lintel to 45 degrees to provide a smooth, unrestricted path for gases.
3 Check that the convection inlet channel
at the base of the front of the convector box is not restricted.
4 If a gather has not been fitted, for
instance when the convector box has been installed in an existing fireplace opening, mark and drill two securing holes in the base of the convector box and the hearth below, and secure the convector box to prevent it from moving forward.
7. Preparatory Building Work
(This can be carried out by a person who is not a registered LPGAS Association installer.)
1 When building the Jetmaster Gas
Convector into an existing fireplace, first remove all loose materials from the recess and measure the opening and recess to ensure that the Jetmaster Gas Convector will fit.
2 The recess must be large enough to
provide a clearance of 15 to 20 mm around the sides of the convector box and be in accordance with the dimensions given on page 2. Cut away or build up to achieve the desired dimensions.
3 Where the recess is to be newly built,
form the recess to give a clearance around the sides and back of the convector box of 15 to 20 mm to accommodate the fibreglass insulation.
4 Where the sides or back of the recess
have to be built up, and the masonry flue gather of the chimney is to be used, build up to the height of the convector box only and then top with a sloping fillet or mortar.
5 If a metal flue gather with flue liners
is to be used, they are available from Jetmaster or any authorised Jetmaster dealer.
6 Check that the hearth, or new plinth
where this is constructed, is level.
7 Wrap the faces and sides of the fire
with insulating material. This insulation is not essential but it is recommended, particularly when fitting to and outside wall, since it will maximise heat retention in the convection chamber,
9. Gas Cylinder, Pipe Runs and Sizes
(This work must only be carried out by a person who is a registered LPGAS Association installer.)
1 Jetmaster LP Gas Convectors must
be operated off one or more 48 kg cylinders, depending on size of unit. The cylinder(s) must be positioned outside, as close as possible to the appliance, and in any case not further than 30 metres, the cylinders must be away from heat sources, electrical devices, drains, windows and combustible materials, in accordance with SABS 087 Part 1: March 1999. Cylinders must always stand in the VERTICAL position and must be fixed so they cannot fall or be knocked over. For best performance, avoid cold areas and shade. Where the regulator or pipework is in a position which is liable to be very cold in winter, it is advisable to lag them to prevent freezing up. It is always advisable to fix the regulator vertically rather than horizontally. This will prevent any condensation settling in the bottom of the regulator which will freeze up in the cold weather causing the Gas Convector to shut down.
2 Check the Jetmaster Pipe Sizing Chart
below to choose the correct size of pipe for the Gas Convector size and length of run. Although Jetmaster supplies 4 metres of 8 mm copper tube with LP Gas Convectors, it is not necessarily of sufficient size if larger fire or longer than 4 metre run are to be fitted. Be sure to fit the right size pipe. Do not run more than one gas fire off each supply, without first checking the fitter’s supply chart. Any queries please contact Jetmaster Technical Department.
LP pipe size: From cylinder and low pressure regulator (28 Mbar) to gas appliance:
Copper tubing 8mm 15mm LP Gas up to to 30 m
Convector 4 m
It is recommended by the LPGAS Association that any pipe run greater than 9 metres is supplied under high pressure and a low pressure regulator is fitted within 4 metres of the fire.
3 Having positioned the 48 kg gas
cylinder in a fixed position, connect the regulator supplied to the flexible hose, and the male hose connector to the end of the copper tubing using the compression fitting. These fittings are supplied and should be used. If a larger pipe is to be used then the correct size of fittings will have to be obtained.
4 Tighten the hose clamps and connect
the regulator to the cylinder. The regulator should be protected from rain and fixed in the vertical position if possible alternatively angle the regulator so that liquids cannot collect on the top causing rusting of internal components and subsequent malfunctioning, i.e. the plastic cap should not face upwards. The air vent in the regulator must be pointing downwards.
5 Cover the end of the gas pipe to
prevent dirt getting into it and damaging the valve, which will invalidate the Warranty.

6 If the pipe is to be laid in concrete,
or comes through a wall or chased into a wall then the pipework must be sleeved. This sleeve can be electrical conduct or plastic pipe of a size larger than the outside diameter of the gas supply line. Place the gas pipe within the sleeve for protection.
7 Run the gas pipe from the cylinder
to the area of the fireplace allowing a full metre of free pipe at the fireplace end; pipe may be brought in through either side or the rear of the gas fire.
8 All bends should be made with a pipe
bender to prevent a restrictive kink forming.
10. Fitting the Gas Burner
(To ensure that the burner and coals are not damaged, this work must be done after all building work has been completed. This work can only be carried out by a person who is a registered LPGAS Association installer.)
1 Drill the side or the back of the
Jetmaster with a 10 or 12 mm drill for the gas pipe entry point. Sleeve the gas pipe with metal/plastic tubing where it is to pass through the wall of the convector box to protect it. If the pipe run from the gas cylinder
has been made with larger than 8 mm pipe, reduce it as close as possible to the fire but not more than 4 metres away, by using a reduction fitting. Now that the pipe work is within the convector box, secure the convector box by screwing it to the floor. (See
7.4 above)
2 Purge the pipe for dust and debris by
running the gas for a few moments; failure to clear the dust or debris from the pipe will invalidate the Warranty.
3 Remove the burner from its packing
and examine the connections, checking that none are loose.
4 With the burner immediately in front
of the convector box, place the unit in the frame supplied, run the gas pipe to the test point nipple, which for the LP burner is positioned on the righthand side of the control valve when viewed from the front. Place the burner and frame in the convector box and connect the pipe with the 8 mm compression nut and olive making sure that the connection is gas tight. Do not strip it. Use of PTFE tape will invalidate the Warranty as small pieces can enter the pipe and damage the valve.

5 Having placed the burner tray in the
frame supplied, push to the back of the convector box, making sure that there is enough space between the front edge of the burner tray and gas front to allow the ceramics to sit in the correct position. Adjustment on the support legs on the burner may be required.
6 Open the gas supply and test for leaks
as far as the valve, attaching a
manometer or U gauge to the test nipple, making sure that the little screw on the test nipple is screwed tightly back in place when testing has finished. The dynamic pressure should read 28 MBar. If the pressure is lower, check the regulator on the cylinder and test all joints on the pipe-work and burner with an electronic gas leak detector or leak test fluid. Rectify and test again.
7 Fit the gas front.

12. Commissioning the Fire
Connect a suitable pressure gauge to the pressure test point. Light the fire on maximum as described in the “User’s Instructions”. Check that the setting pressure is in accordance with that given on the Chart in the “Technical Data” Section or on the Data Label found in the appliance. Adjust the Natural Gas or Propane Regulator as necessary. After this has been checked shut down the gas fire.
Temporarily isolate the fire from the mains supply. Then disconnect the pressure gauge, replace the pressure test point sealing screw, reinstate the mains supply and test for gas soundness.
Turn the control knob and light the pilot as described in the “User Instructions”. Turn the control knob to the maximum position and fit the ash pan cover. Check that after ten minutes all the products of combustion are entering the flue by traversing the perimeter of the fireplace opening or canopy by using a smoke generator e.g. smoke match.
Once the fire is installed and opperational the installer must check for spillage. Carry out the lighting procedure and turn the fire to high.
Allow to warm up for 5 minutes and then using a smoke match or joss stick set 25mm down and 25mm inside of the fire opening run the match across the width of the opening to check that all of the smoke is drawn away. Some small whiffs of smoke may be expelled from the extreme ends of the fire opening and this is quite normal.
Repeat the test with doors and windows to the premises open and closed, and with any extractor fans in the same room or adjacent rooms running on high. The fire should continue to clear its combustion products. Also operate any other flued appliances in the same or neighbouring rooms and ensure they continue to function satisfactorily as multiple flues can work against one another.
If spillage is detected during this procedure it could indicate a faulty flue or lack of ventilation. If the problem cannot be rectified immediately, disconnect the appliance, and advise the customer not to use the appliance until the problem has been resolved.
The customer should always be advised of the need for regular servicing and checks to ensure the continued clearance of combustion products.

User’s Instructions
13. General
This fire is intended for decorative purposes. Any purpose provided ventilation should be checked regularly to ensure that it is free from obstruction. This fire should be serviced regularly by a qualified person.
It is recommended that a guard be used for the protection of young children, the elderly or infirm. A vacuum cleaner may be used to clean the appliance.
DO NOT throw rubbish etc. upon the coals or otherwise disturb the fuel bed. Debris from any source or soot formed should be removed from time to time. See “Cleaning Instructions”.
The pilot light and flame sensing device fitted to this fire is also an atmospheric sensing device which shuts off both the main burner and pilot if evacuation of the combustion products is interrupted. If
the fire shuts itself off, do not use the fire and have the flue and fire checked by a qualified person.
Due to the newness of materials the fire may give off a slight smell for a period of time after commissioning. This is quite normal and any odour should disperse after a few hours operation.
Warning Notes
Properly installed and operated this appliance will not leak gases. Persistent fume emission must not be tolerated. If fume emission does exist, then the following steps should be taken:
1 Open doors and windows to ventilate
room.
2 Turn the fire off.
3 Check for flue blockage and clear if
necessary.
4 Do not attempt to re-light the gas
grate until the cause of the emission has been identified and rectified. Should assistance or advice be required contact your nearest agent.

14. Lighting the Fire: 550 & 700 Gas Convector
The positions of the control valve are depicted on the control panel fitted around the control knob.
If the main burner or pilot light are extinguished for any reason do not attempt to re-light the pilot within three minutes.
The off position is self explanatory preventing any gas from passing through the control valve to either the pilot burner or to the main burner.
By pressing the control knob in it is possible to turn it anti-clockwise. The first function is to turn on the gas to the pilot, this occurs just before reaching the pilot position. (If the fire has not been lit for some time it may be necessary to hold the knob in this position for some seconds to clear the air from the pipe and allow gas to reach the pilot burner). Once gas is available at the pilot, continual rotation anti-clockwise will cause the piezo ignitor to spark. This is accompanied by a click at the valve, and should result in the pilot burner igniting. This should be verified by looking at the left-hand side of the fire tray, behind the front coal piece.
Once the pilot is lit the control knob should continue to be pressed in for 10
- 20 seconds. In this time the pilot flame will have heated the flame supervision thermocouple sufficiently to operate a hold on magnet within the valve. The knob should then be turned so that the pointer is approximately horizontal. This allows gas at a low rate to enter the burner and be ignited by the pilot flame. Once the fire has fully cross lit, allow approximately 15 seconds at this setting to allow the flame to fully establish before setting to any level between Maximum and Minimum by adjusting the control knob accordingly.
To turn off the main burner, turn the control to MIN - press the knob gently until it will turn clockwise to the pilot position. To turn off the pilot press knob and turn to off.
If burnback occurs underneath the burner, turn knob to the off position. Then re-light the fire. If this problem reoccurs switch off unit and call your gas installer.
Thus the sequence is:
A. To Light the Fire
1 From off press the control knob in
and turn slowly anti-clockwise.
2 When the ignition click occurs,
check that the pilot is lit (if not repeat 1 & 2).
3 Hold knob in for 10 - 20 seconds.
4 Release knob and check pilot
remains alight.
5 Turn knob until pointer is horizontal.
The fire should then ignite.
6 Let fire fully cross ignite and allow
approximately 15 seconds.
7 Adjust flames to required level
without pressing knob.
B. To Extinguish the Fire
1 Turn control knob clockwise to
minimum position.
2 Press knob gently until able to
continue turning clockwise to pilot.
3 To extinguish the pilot, press knob
and turn to off, although it is in order to leave the pilot permanently lit.

550, 700 & 850 GAS CONVECTOR INSTALLATION & OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
17. General
The following servicing procedure should be carried out regularly and only by a qualified person.
NOTE: Due to the materials used in the fuel bed, it is inevitable that servicing can be a dirty and dusty operation. Suitable precautions should be taken.
Important: The pilot and flue sensing device fitted to this fire is also an atmospheric sensing device. If for any reason any part of the pilot assembly is to be replaced the entire assembly including the pilot burner, thermocouple electrode and injector must be exchanged complete for a pilot assembly from the original manufacturer only. This atmosphere sensing device is not adjustable and must not be put out of action.
18. Servicing Procedure
1 Turn off fire and allow it to go cold. 2 Turn off gas supply at the isolation
tap.
3 Carefully remove all the coals and
ceramics one at a time by hand and remove any soot deposits by hand with a soft brush i.e. paint brush.
NOTE: Due to the intense temperatures reached in the fire some surface cracks may appear on the ceramic components. This is quite normal and will not affect the safe operation of the appliance.
4 Disconnect the gas pipe from the
valve and lift the gas grate out of the fire box.
5 Remove the injectors then clean
and visually inspect for damage before replacing.
6 Clean the burner tray and flame
strip.
7 Visually inspect the gas grate for
any defects before replacing.
8 Re-assemble in reverse order,
reconnect to gas supply and check for gas soundness.
9 Replace all ceramics and coals as
described in “Positioning the Coals”.
10 Check that any purpose provided
ventilation is free from obstruction.
11 Re-commission the fire as described
in “Commissioning the Fire”.
19. Registering the Warranty
Jetmaster warrants the Gas Grate for one year, providing it is fitted and used correctly, and has been fitted by a registered LPGAS Association fitter accredited by Jetmaster, and the Warranty Card is returned to Jetmaster fully completed, including the fitter’s details and telephone contact number, within 30 days of purchase.

20. Repairs under Warranty
(This work can only be carried out by a person who is a registered LPGAS Association installer.)
Most problems are minor and can be solved by the fitter, and it is a condition of the Warranty that in the first instance the customer contacts the Distributor from whom the fire was purchased and arranges for the same fitter to return to try to remedy the problem. If necessary, the fitter can telephone the Jetmaster Technical Help Telephone Line on (011) 474-2100 from site and get advice. In the unlikely event that this fails to cure the problem, Jetmaster will organise for technical assistance on site. In this case Jetmaster requires that the original fitter also attends. The Jetmaster Warranty is only effective if the Gas Grate is installed fully in accordance with these instructions and the Warranty Card is returned fully completed within 30 days of purchase. The fitter must fill in his details of the Warranty Card.
21. Maintaining the Gas Grate
Gas fires need checking annually. This involves cleaning and relaying the coals, checking the pilot light and all joints, checking ventilators and fume clearance, and repainting the exposed parts. It should take an hour to an hour and a half. We are a seasonal business - so please do not leave calling us for a maintenance visit until the first day of winter! Book ahead! Keep a service book on until.
22. Gas Fumes
Occasional fumes from cross-draughts may occur but persistent fume emission must not be tolerated. If this occurs, if you smell gas, or if you feel drowsy or have a head-ache when the Gas Grate is burning, the following immediate actions must be taken:
1 Turn off the Gas Grate and extinguish
all naked flames.
2 Open doors and windows to ventilate
room. 3 Turn the gas off at the gas cylinder. 4 Check for flue and ventilator blockage
and clean if required. 5 Do not attempt to re-light the Gas
Grate until the cause of fume emission
has been identified and rectified. If
necessary seek professional advice
from Jetmaster (Pty) Ltd telephone
(011) 474-2100 or a registered LPGAS
Association installer.
