Water meter
Model MAGDOS FL(S) can be addressed by commercial contact water meters. In order to avoid disturbing influences or faulty pulses, the pump should not be mounted directly to the water counter. However, if an adapter is used providing for a distance of 50 mm a direct mounting is allowed. Preferably the pump should be mounted to the chemical tank or to a wall holder. The electronic system is designed for a maximum input frequency of 105 contacts per minute. The pulse sequence of the water meter should be designed accordingly.
General
In many processes in water and waste water treatment as well as in swimming pools metering pumps are required which can be adapted precisely to the corresponding process and the necessary functions regarding their metering capacity. Metering pumps of the MAGDOS E/EL/FL series were designed such that you can select the appropriate pump for each specific task.
MAGDOS E-
Pump control for continuous operation at 100 strokes per minute.
MAGDOS EL-
Pump control for continuous operation at 100 strokes per minute allowing the connection of a self-monitoring low-level electrode.
MAGDOS FL-
Pump control for external control by means of water meter, controller and any other potential-free contacts. Per each incoming control contact the pump carries out a stroke. In order to protect the pump against overheating the control unit allows only a maximum frequency of up to 100 strokes per minute. As a protection against dry operation it is possible to connect a self-monitoring low-level electrode.
Pumps of the EL and FL series are optionally also available with a fault indicator relay (type ELS and FLS) for a remote alarm signal if the level of the metering medium is too low or in the case of power failure.
The metering capacity is in the range of 0.1 to 12 l/h. The exact metering output and the possible backpressure are shown in the feed characteristics in MB 1 02 05 / 5 and 6. Metering quantity adjustment is stepless and carried out via stroke length by actuating a threaded bush. The diaphragm stroke is produced by means of a DC solenoid. Reduction gears or rotating parts are not used which guarantees a high operational safety and maintenenance-free operation.
All types are designed to meet the requirements of of the German Water and Gas Association and DIN 19635 and are also available as CSA/UL-versions.

Order example
A solenoid metering pump controllable by a water meter is required for metering 0.4ml phosphate per stroke against 8 bar. Malfunctions are to be indicated by remote signalling.
Pump selection
The required 0.4 ml/stroke are achieved by a Magdos 4 l/h with a stroke setting of approx. 60 %. For external control and fault indication a Magdos FLS is the proper pump. This pump type can be provided with a suction line including a tank low-level control device. The pump is made up of the modules listed in tables 1 to 5 as follows:

metering pump fails. We recommend installing leakage probes and containment tanks. Metering pumps are produced according to highest quality standards and have a long service life. Nevertheless some parts are subject to wear (e.g diaphragm, valve seats, valve balls). To ensure long operating life, visual checks are required regularly. Operating and maintenance personnel must be able to access the pump easily. Periodic maintenance protects the metering pump against shutdowns. To increase the metering accuracy and reliability, we recommend using additional fittings. These include backpressure valves, relief valves, leakage probes, and chemical low level indicators, as shown in figures 1 to 3. Always use appropriate tools for the installation of plastic connecting parts. In order to avoid damage, never apply excessive force; plastic parts (especially PVC parts) can be screwed and unscrewed more easily if the thread is lubricated with vaseline or silicone grease before. Note: For this purpose, the compatibility with the chemical to be metered must be checked. MAGDOS metering pumps with integrated level control function are equipped with a short-circuit jack plug which must be removed before connecting a level control by means of a jack plug. To keep the protection class, screw a PG plastic sleeve on the jack plug. The required PG sleeve is part of the level control (also in combination with a suction line). Mounting the metering pump directly on the water meter may result in noise level amplification. In this case, it is recommended to mount the pump on separate wall brackets which, for the same reason, should be fixed to outer walls instead of interior walls with adjacent occupied rooms. It is also possible to mount the pump directly on the metering supply tank. Ambient temperatures exceeding 40°C are not permitted. Radiant heat of apparatus and heat exchangers must be kept in limits allowing the pump to sufficiently dissipate its own heat. Exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided especially for metering pumps with plastic housings because the black plastic material can be damaged. If the pump is installed outside, provide an enclosure to protect it against weather. Wiring of the MAGDOS metering pump must be carried out by a specialist according to the local regulations. Normally the MAGDOS is connected with a safety plug. The electrical data for all MAGDOS data is listed in Table 14 "Technical data". Note: The MAGDOS metering pumps are not suited to be used in explosive environments. Do not lay signal cables of water meters or 0(4)...20mA controls parallel to high-voltage current
Keep the operating instructions of the metering pump and the accessories readily accessible.

1. General
Solenoid metering pumps can be used in many applications. It is a particular advantage that they can be controlled proportionally to water meter contacts. They are also suited to be used as regulating units in automatic control systems. See table 13 for various control types and monitoring facilities.
2. Scope of delivery
Be careful when unpacking the metering pump and possible accessories in order not to miss small parts. Compare the scope of delivery to the delivery note. If there are any discrepancies, try to find out the reason.
3. Installation
For selection of a pump during construction of a plant as well as for installation and operation, the local rules must be observed. This applies to the selection of suitable pump materials, the handling of the chemicals and the electrical installation. At the same time the technical data of the metering pump according to table 12 must be considered, and the plant must be designed correspondingly (e.g. pressure loss in lines depending on nominal diameter and length). Both, the designer and the user are responsible to make sure that the whole plant including the metering pump is constructed so that neither plant equipment nor buildings are severely damaged in the case of chemical leakage due to the failure of wear parts (e.g. diaphragm rupture) or burst tubing. When constructing chemical plants, the installation must be carried out so that no consequential damages appear which are unreasonably high even if the

or power supply lines. Supply and signal lines must be laid in separate channels. In the case of junctions, a 90° angle is required. If the water meter control cable is more than 2 meters long, it must be shielded. To avoid incorrect metering after the process is finished, provide an electric and hydraulic interlocking system.
4. Injection fitting assembly
Injection nozzles prevent the liquid from returning to the pump by using either a spring-loaded ball valve or a hose valve. We recommend vertical injection from bottom to top to allow air to escape thereby avoiding chemical precipitation. Experience with the particular metering chemical and all appropriate characteristics must be taken into account.
5. Safety instructions
When working on chemical equipment, observe the local safety rules (e.g. wear personal protective clothes).
Before working on the metering pump and plant,
disconnect it from the main power supply and secure it against reconnection. Before the voltage supply is switched on again, the metering lines must be connected so that chemical left in the metering head cannot spurt out.
The metering head of the pump as well as
connections and lines in the plant may be under pressure. Working on the metering plant requires special safety precautions and may only be carried out by instructed technical personnel.
Before startup, all screwed connections must be
checked for correct tightness and, if necessary, must be tightened up using appropriate tools.
If connections at the metering head are
unscrewed during operation for venting or other reasons, leaking chemical must be removed completely. This is the only way to avoid the danger of physical injury and corrosion at the metering pump. Leaking chemical may also destroy the diaphragm at its mounting points.
When changing the chemical, check whether the
After adjustment work at the control panel of the
MAGDOS, the control cover must be closed again (the cover is not available for all MAGDOS types). Otherwise protection class IP 65 cannot be guaranteed.
After changing the electrical connections, e.g.
removing the level control, the PG cable gland nut must be tightened in order to ensure the protection class of the pump.

8. Replacing the diaphragm
The diaphragm can be easily removed and replaced according to the exploded drawing. To facilitate removal of the old diaphragm, first set the stroke to "0" while pump is running. If the diaphragm rod is turning it can be stopped by means of a locking pin (JESCO P/N 29379). The drilled hole in the diaphragm rod can be accessed through the drainage channel.
Suction valve Drainage tube
Metering head Snap ring
Grease diaphragm rod with Molycote. The deflector plate must rest in the diaphragm rod
groove. Ensure that it is not clamped between the diaphragm rod and the support plate. If the diaphragm is supplied with a support plate, clean or replace the latter before mounting it.
9. Drive solenoids
Depending on the pump version, the solenoid design differs. The following table shows the coil resistance at 20°C room temperature. With perfect coils, the resistance tolerance should not exceed +/-5%. If the resistance is substantially lower, there is a short in the coil, if the resistance is indefinitely high, the coil is fused or the wire is broken.
7. Startup
ATTENTION!
Adjust the stroke length only while pump is running.
1. For first startup, set pump to maximum stroke frequency or press start key and allow to prime. For this purpose, it is advisable to set the stroke to "10". If the pump doesn't prime, remove discharge valve and pour water or chemical (if harmless!) into head. Mount the valve and allow to prime again (priming aid, item 14, fig. 2 is recommended).
2. If a venting facility is integrated in the metering head or is available as separate unit, open it and wait until liquid escapes. Then close it again. In the case of effervescent liquids allow the liquid to escape permanently (approx. 1 drop for
1...3 strokes).
3. When correct operation is achieved, set to required output and lock adjusting knob. Refer to the calibration table attached to the pump to get the stroke length setting for a selected output (ml/pulse). The back pressure influences are taken into consideration in the table, and intermediate values must be interpolated. Depending on the installation and the chemicals used, these values may differ and must be checked under operating conditions.
Example:
Required metering capacity: 0.8 ml/pulse against 8 bar. The table says H=9.9. Adjust knob "H" accordingly while the pump is running.
4. In the case of externally actuated pumps (e.g. by water meters), set pump to "external". Initiate the water flow by opening a water valve and check pump pulse rate.
5. The manufacturer of the metering equipment is not responsible for damages due to excessive or low flow rates resulting from faulty pump settings or incorrect and insufficient installation of peripheral fittings.

10. Correction of stroke length setting
To avoid excessive metering, the metering line must be returned to the chemical tank during setting (if necessary).
1. Operate pump with automatic control (if necessary, by pressing the start key for FL).
2. Regardless of the indicator position, loosen the fastening screw and turn the stroke length adjustment knob counterclockwise until the pump no longer delivers or, in the case of no-pressure delivery, the flow rate has reached the minimum. If zero delivery could not be attained because the knob reached the stop position, remove the knob after loosening the fastening screw, turn it to the right and reattach it. Then turn again to the left until the pump no longer delivers.

JESCO DOSIERTECHNIK GmbH & Co. KG
General
MAGDOS DE / DX solenoid metering pumps combine the digital technology of state-of-the-art microprocessors with high-quality mechanics. Due to its versatility in the area of external control, the new MAGDOS series is very flexible. The pump can be supplied with a digital display upon request. The display shows the different operating conditions and possible error messages.
The new MAGDOS is available in two basic versions with the following features:
MAGDOS DE
- Internal control with continuous stroke frequency adjustment from 0 to 100 strokes per minute for DE 01...12 and 0...70 strokes per minute for DE 20...100
- Changeover function to external pulse control by water meter or other voltage-free contacts
- Connection for level control with alarm signal
MAGDOS DX
- Internal control with continuous stroke frequency adjustment from 0 to 100 strokes per minute for DX 01...12 and 0...70 strokes per minute for DX 20...100
- Changeover function to external control by 0/4...20 mA standard signal
- Changeover function to external pulse control by water meter or other voltage-free contacts
- Pulse multiplication with factors 2/4/8/16/32/64
- Pulse division with divisors 2/4/8/16/32/64
- Connection for level control with alarm signal
As an alternative, both versions can be supplied with warning alarm relay and digital display. The metering capacities range between 0.1 l/h at 10 bar and 115 l/h at 1.5 bar. Refer to MB 1 02 20 / 6-7 for exact performance curves, the output per pulse is set by changing the stroke length via the stroke adjustment knob.
The pumps are designed to meet the requirements of DVGW-DIN 19635 and CSA/UL.
Magnetic drive
The stroke movement of the metering diaphragm is produced by a d.c. solenoid. Due to the infinitely adjustable stroke stop, it is possible to set a stroke of 0-6 mm, depending on the pump size. Reduction gears or rotating parts are not used, resulting in high reliability and low maintenance work. The armature runs in a maintenance-free DU bushing with PTFE coating and additional silicone grease lubrication.
Control unit
The main part of the control unit is a microprocessor which controls the stroke frequency with digital accuracy. The various control possibilities allow the pump to be adapted to practically all requirements of home water supply, water and waste water treatment as well as industrial pocesses. The electronic control unit is available in two basic versions with functions described below.

Water meters
The MAGDOS DE/DX can be controlled by any water meter with voltage-free contacts. For water meters which pulse too fast or too slow for the pump, the pulse division or multiplication function of the pump can be used to adapt the pump to the water meter. In the case of pulse division, the maximum stroke frequency is restricted (see MB 1 02 20/4).
In order to avoid interference or false pulses, do not mount the pump directly on the water meter. If adapters which ensure a distance of 50 mm are used, direct mounting is possible. With this kind of installation, pulse division or multiplication must not be used. It is recommended to mount the pump on the chemical tank or to the wall.

External control
a) Contact In order to protect the pump against overheating, the maximum input frequency is limited to 70 or 100 pulses/ minute. If the input frequency is higher, each third or fourth metering stroke is not carried out. Therefore external pulse transmitters should be designed so that the maximum stroke frequency is not exceeded.
b) Contact with pulse division/multiplication Incoming control pulses can be divided or multiplied by setting the selector switch correspondingly.
1) Ratio 1:1
2) Pulse multiplication e.g. setting to 8
-- one control pulse results in 8 metering strokes Note: The metering strokes are carried out at maximum stroke frequency.
3) Pulse division e.g. setting to 16
-- one metering stroke is carried out after 16 incoming control pulses.
When setting pulse division to 32, the maximum stroke frequency is reduced to 70 strokes/min.; with divisor 64, it is max. 36 strokes/min..
c) Standard signal 0/4...20mA To control the pump by standard signal 0/4...20 mA, operate the selector switch. The linearity of converting the signal into stroke frequency is +/- 3%. If the signal source is not isolated, it must be ensured that the signal line does not come into contact with ground (separate isolators available upon request!). Note: To avoid accidental metering after the process is finished, provide an electric or hydraulic interlocking system.

Level control
To protect the pump against dry operation, level probes with or without alarm signaling can be connected (3.5 mm jack). They also provide self-diagnostics. A
dummy plug is inserted if no level switch is used.
Warning alarm relay
With the warning alarm relay (voltage-free changeover contact), the following alarm states can be transmitted:
- "Tank empty" if a simple level probe is connected.
- "Tank almost empty" if a level probe with alarm signaling is connected. (In this case "Tank empty" cannot be indicated.)
- If, for d.c. signal control with 4...20mA, the input signal is less than 4mA (e.g. cable breakage).
- Power supply failure

Example of an order
A solenoid metering pump controllable by water meter contacts is required for metering 0.4 ml phosphate per stroke against 8 bar. For remote monitoring from a central control station, a warning alarm relay is to be provided.
Pump selection
a) Based on the flow rate of 0.4 ml/stroke, the
MAGDOS 4 is determined according to the performance curve (MB 1 02 20/6). Because of the required warning alarm relay, the control unit of pump type DE4S, Part No. 33942, must be chosen
from table 2. b) Select drive Part No. 32720 from table 1. c) Part No. 23.809 is chosen as metering head (PVC
is compatible with phosphate). d) For the suction and discharge valves, select Part
No. 20.890 and No. 20.891 (PVC and Viton are
resistant). e) See table 5 for suction connection Part No. 20975
for ø 4/6 tubing and discharge connection Part No.
32980 for ø 6/12 tubing. f) The suction line, preferable with level control, can
be found in MB 1 22 01.

Operating and Maintenance Instructions
appear which are unreasonably high even if the metering pump fails.
Keep the operating instructions of the metering pump and the accessories readily accessible.

15. Troubleshooting
When constructing chemical plants, the installation must be carried out so that no consequential damages

Do not lay signal cables of water meters or 0(4)...20mA controls parallel to high-voltage current or power supply lines.
When working on chemical equipment, observe
the local safety rules (e.g. wear personal protective clothes).
When changing the chemical, check whether the
materials used for the metering pump and the other plant parts are chemically resistant. If there is the danger of a chemical reaction between different media, a thorough cleaning first is mandatory.

In the case of 0(4)...20mA signal control (only MAGDOS DX) it is important that the signal line doesn't come into contact with ground, if the signal source is not isolated (individual voltage separators upon request). The linearity of converting the signal into stroke frequency is +/- 3%.
