DIY DESIGNER INTERIOR DOOR KIT
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Our goal with EVELIN™ DIY Designer Door Kits was to make it as easy as possible
to buy and replace interior doors, without hiring a pro. If you’re already an interior
door expert, you can skip this section. But if you’re door-confused or have
questions—you’ll likely find answers below.
WHAT IS A PRE-HUNG DOOR—AND WHY IS THIS THE BEST OP TION FOR DIY?
Excellent question. What most people think of as a door (the part you swing open and shut) is technically a door slab.
Every door slab in your home is attached with hinges (a.k.a. “hung”) to a three-sided door frame that slides into an
opening in your wall. A pre-hung door is a slab that comes already attached to its frame, so you don’t have to install
those pesky hinges yourself (and trust us, this is a time saver). With EVELIN
your existing door trim, pry away the old frame, and slide your new pre-hung door into place. The result is a totally
transformative DIY, with fewer tools and less frustration.

WHY CAN’T I JUST REPLACE THE DOOR SLAB?
While replacing “just” the door slab certainly sounds easier—it can be a beast, especially for a first timer. In fact, most pros
will tell you they’d prefer to install a pre-hung door. That’s because the odds of your new slab fitting your old frame just
right are actually pretty slim. Door frames tend to warp and wear over time, making it difficult to align the new slab so it
swings freely and closes securely. You might end up having to shave down your new door slab to make it fit (and that will
make you tired and grumpy, and no one wants that for you.) Another tricky thing about door slabs? They don’t come with
hinges installed and they don’t have holes for handles. That means you’ll have to rout out a divot for the hinges to slide into
and cut the holes where the handle will go. Not to mention you’ll have to find and choose the right hinges and hardware,
which are sold separately. Bottom line? Replacing a door slab is not an impossible mission—but you and Tom Cruise
probably both have better things to do.
SOLID WOOD, SOLID CORE OR HOLLOW CORE?
Solid core doors (like EVELIN™ DIY Designer doors) are made from a mixture of wood and synthetic wood composites.
They are heavy and durable and provide excellent sound insulation. Most of what we consider wood doors nowadays are
solid engineered wood with a real wood veneer. True solid wood doors, which are quite rare these days, tend to expand
or contract depending on the temperature or moisture level in your home, which may cause the door to stick—or not shut
securely. Solid wood and solid core doors are more labor intensive to install and repair. In contrast, hollow core doors—your
most cost-effective option—are very lightweight. While this may seem like an advantage when installing, it will feel like
a disadvantage when every word you say can be overheard through the hollow core door once it’s been installed. (Sound
insulation on hollow core doors? Not good.) Hollow core doors are also difficult (if not impossible) to repair, so if they do
get damaged (which is more likely, because they’re hollow) you’re going to have to replace them.
DOOR HANDING: IS MY DOOR RIGHT-HANDED OR LEF T-HANDED?
Just like most people, doors are either left-handed or right-handed. How can you tell which “handed” door you need for
your room? Stand facing the door in the room the door pulls into. The hinge barrels should be visible when the door is
closed. If the handle is on the left side of the door, the door is left-handed. If the handle is on the right, your door
is right-handed.
WHAT IS A STILE & R AIL DOOR?
Stile & Rail doors are interior doors (like EVELIN™ Designer Doors) that consist of a solid door slab—typically made of
engineered wood for added strength with vertical stiles and horizontal rails that encase the door panel using a dowel-and-
glue construction. The construction adds stability, durability, sound resistance, and a high-end aesthetic with crisp angles
and clean lines. Some stile and rail doors, including the EVELIN
constructed with real wood veneer that can be stained to match the wood tones in your home. Evelin

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO INSTALL MY EVELIN DESIGNER DOOR?
We recommend you and a partner set aside 3-5 hours to replace your old door. Our instructional video
was made with beginners in mind, so each step is clearly outlined. Want to watch the full video before
you purchase your kit? We’ve got you covered. Scan the QR code to watch our instructional video and
download written instructions to see how easy it is to door it yourself.
HOW DOES EVELIN COMPARE COST-WISE TO OTHER INTERIOR DOORS?
Because the EVELIN™ collection has been curated by our designers to meet the needs of any home design, EVELIN™ deli vers
a custom-looking designer door, all parts included for about half the price of a custom-made door (not including the cost of
professional installation). You can buy a hollow-core pre-hung door “off the shelf” at a big box store for around $150, but
the style options will be limited and you’ll have to select (and prepare the door for) the appropriate hardware.
