BEHIND THE NAME
EVELIN™ is a nod to Evelyn Mary Lantzky Wendt (1896-1982), a strong,
determined woman and loving wife and mother. She’s also the “E”
in JELD-WEN, the name of the Wendt family farm in Iowa (formed
from family members’ initials: Jewel, Evelyn, Lester, and Dick), and
later the name Dick Wendt gave in 1960 to his new door and window
manufacturing company — today, one of the largest in the world.
A great home brings everyone together, and we believe beautiful,
reliable doors and windows contribute to that. We’re delighted to be a
part of your great home.

STEP 1: PREPARE FOR INSTALLATION
1.A
GET RIGHT WITH YOUR BOX.
• The box should lay flat on the ground and open to display the kit.
The outside should state “This Side Up.”
• Leave everything in the box and read through these instructions
prior to starting the installation.
1.B
TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR EXISTING DOOR.
• Face your existing door so that it pulls into the room.
From this position, note which side the handle is on. If the handle
is on the left side, this door is a Left Hand (LH) swing. If the handle
is on the right side, this door is a Right Hand (RH) swing.
• Check that the new door in the box is the correct swing. If your
existing door is a LH, the handle set hole should be on the left
side of your new door, and vice versa for RH.
1.C
INSPECT THE NEW DOOR FOR ANY DAMAGE.
• Everything looks good? Head to the next step.
• If there is damage or the product is incorrect, please see our
Troubleshooting Guide on page 18.

STEP 2: REMOVE THE EXISTING DOOR
WARNING: WOOD DUST
Drilling or sanding wood products can expose you to wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/wood.
WARNING: LEAD PAINT
If you’ll be disturbing existing paint, take proper precautions if lead paint is suspected (commonly used before 1979). Your regional EPA (www.epa.gov/lead) or Consumer Product Safety Commission offices can provide information regarding regulations and lead protection.
2.A
TAKE OFF (AND SAVE) ANY DECORATIVE DOOR TRIM OR MOLDING.
• Using a box cutter knife, carefully cut along the outside edge of the trim to separate trim
from wall. Repeat along the inside of the trim.
Trim will still be attached with nails. (PRO TIP: Place painter’s tape along the trim to
help protect the painted finish.)
• Using a molding puller, place the flat end into the crack between the trim and
wall. Hold the molding puller in place and hammer the opposite end until the molding
puller is wedged about ½” underneath the trim. Be careful not to damage trim or wall.
• Rock the molding puller back and forth until the nails loosen.
Repeat around trim until all nails are loose.
• Pull trim off wall and set aside.
8
2.B
REMOVE ALL NAILS FROM THE TRIM.
• Using pliers or a nail cutter, remove nails by pulling them through the “back side” of the
trim. Also, inspect the door frame and remove any remaining nails. Safely discard nails.
• Using a box cutter knife, clean up any caulk on the edges of the trim.
• Repeat with door trim on the other side of the door. (PRO TIP: This is a great time to
patch any drywall and touch up paint as needed. However, this step can be done later.)

STEP 2: REMOVE THE EXISTING DOOR (CONTINUED)
2.C
TAKE THE EXISTING DOOR OUT OF ITS FRAME.
CAUTION: Two-person step
In this step, you’re removing your existing door from hinge support. Your door slab may be heavy and could potentially cause injury/damage once it is unsupported. This is a great time to have another person help hold/secure the door while the last hinge pin is popped out.
• Grab a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and locate the hinges on your existing door.
Each hinge is connected with a vertical pin through the center.
• Point the screwdriver tip upwards at the base of the pin, and gently tap screwdriver with
hammer until the pin pops out. (Sometimes the head of the pin will dislodge about ½”
from the barrel of the hinge; you can use pliers to pull it the rest of the way out.)
• Repeat for the remaining two hinges.
• Carefully pull hinges apart to remove the door, then set the door aside.
10
2.D
REMOVE THE ORIGINAL DOOR FRAME.
• Wedge the flat end of the molding puller in between the frame and the wall.
Hold the molding puller in place and hammer the opposite end until
the molding puller is wedged several inches in.
• Using force, pry in both directions until the frame begins to lift away from
the wall/rough opening. Don’t worry about damaging the frame; it will be discarded.
• Repeat around frame until all nails are loose. Remove frame from opening.
2.E
CLEAN UP ANY LEFTOVER SHIMS OR NAILS.
• There may be wooden shims nailed to the wall/rough opening that need to be removed.
Use the molding puller and hammer again to loosen and remove nails and shims.
• Remove any remaining nails in the opening.
• Now is a good time to move your old door and door frame to a location that
is out of the way.
Fantastic work! The opening is now ready for your new door.

STEP 3: INSTALL YOUR NEW DOOR
3.A
SEPARATE YOUR NEW DOOR FROM ITS FRAME.
• While the door is still in the box, locate the hinges. Just as you did to remove your existing door,
use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to pop the hinge pins out.
• Repeat for the remaining two hinges. Be sure to keep these three pins in a safe place to be used later.
• Then, remove the plastic placeholder located where the doorknob would be.
3.B
REMOVE YOUR NEW DOOR FROM THE BOX.
CAUTION: Heavy door, potential two-person step
• Carefully pull the hinges apart and lift the door out, leaving the frame behind.
• Lay the door flat on the floor.
3.C
UPGRADE THE MIDDLE SCREW ON EACH DOOR HINGE.
DON’T SKIP THIS STEP! Doing this adds extra security and support to your door.
• Locate the three provided screws in the box. (Note: These are not the screws from the Door Hanging Kit.
We will use those in a later step.)
• Using a screwdriver or drill, remove the middle screw from one of the hinges. Replace this middle screw
with one of the provided screws.
• Repeat for the remaining two hinges, only replacing the middle screw on each hinge.
12
3.D
ATTACH THE BRACKETS TO THE DOOR FRAME.
CAUTION: Drill use
Exercise care when applying pressure on the drill to ensure screws are securely tightened.
• Remove the door frame from the box and lay it flat on the floor.
• With the door frame on the ground, use a pencil to make a mark roughly 3” down from the middle
hinge. Center your level over this mark and make additional marks on the far right and left of your level.
You should have three marks total.
• Locate the Door Hanging Kit inside the box and find the brackets and screws.
• Place a bracket over one of the marks. Using a power drill, screw the bracket in securely. Repeat for the
remaining two marks.
• Repeat this on the other side of the door frame, using your level to make (3) marks and securing the
brackets tightly.

STEP 3: INSTALL YOUR NEW DOOR (CONTINUED)
3.E
MEASURE AT THE DOORWAY NOW, TO HELP YOU CENTER LATER.
• Pick up the door frame and place it upright inside the doorway opening, with the rounded hinges
facing you.
• Use a tape measure to measure ½” from the outside edge of the hinge side frame to the wall.
Make a small mark on the wall with a pencil.
• Repeat several times until there are 5-6 marks on the wall along each side of the door frame.
This will help you center your door later.
• Pull the door frame out of the opening and set it aside briefly for the next step.
3.F
DRAW VERTICAL LINES TO HELP CENTER THE DOOR.
• With pencil in hand, hold the level against the wall to line up two of the marks. (PRO TIP: Make sure the
bubble in the level is completely centered. It’s more important that the level is centered than that all the
initial marks match up.)
• Once the two marks are centered, draw a vertical line on the wall to connect the marks.
• Repeat this process to draw a vertical line along the entire length of the door frame. Be precise here: double
check the level each time to ensure the vertical line is completely level. This step is critical to the success of
your door installation.
• Repeat this process on the other side of the wall.
14
3.G
ATTACH THE DOOR FRAME TO THE WALL.
CAUTION: Drill use
Exercise care when applying pressure on the drill to ensure screws are
securely tightened.
• Place the door frame into the opening, making sure it’s centered between the two
drawn lines. Use the ridges on the brackets to guide you.
• Once the frame is centered, starting on the hinge side, use a screw provided
in the Door Hanging Kit to secure the middle bracket into the wall. Drill with force
to ensure a secure fit.
• Note which notch on the bracket the pencil line is lined up with. For example,
if the pencil line is lined up with the second notch, make sure the top and bottom
hinges are also lined up on the second notch. Repeat for the remaining two brackets
on the hinge side.
• Hold your level up to the hinge side of the frame and make sure the frame is
completely level. If level, repeat the previous steps for the handle side. If not,
see page 19 in this booklet.
3.H
INSTALL YOUR NEW DOOR.
CAUTION: Two-person step
• Carefully pick up the door, place it into the frame, and align the hinges.
• While your partner holds the door in place, insert the middle hinge pin first.
Then insert the other two hinge pins. Do not let go of the door until all three
hinges are secured.
• Next, hammer the hinge pins gently to secure them in place.
• Test the door by swinging it back and forth and making sure it fits into the frame.
Congratulations! You just installed your new door!

STEP 4: INSTALL THE DOOR HANDLE
4.A
ATTACH THE STRIKE PLATE TO THE DOOR FRAME.
CAUTION: Drill use
Exercise care when applying pressure on the drill to ensure screws are securely tightened.
• From the hardware box, remove the rectangular strike plate and screws. One side of the plate has a beveled
edge while the other is flat.
• With the beveled side facing toward you, use a drill to screw the strike plate into the door frame.
4.B
INSTALL THE HANDLE.
• Use the installation instructions included with your door handle and hardware.
Almost there! Now that your door is fully operational, it’s time to add the finishing touches.
16
STEP 5: APPLY TRIM & FINISH
5.A
REATTACH YOUR ORIGINAL DOOR TRIM.
CAUTION: Two-person step
• Remove any painter’s tape around the doorway.
• Place your original door trim over the opening. The trim should be offset about 1/8" from the inside
of the door frame. Have someone hold the trim in place and use a nail gun or hammer and nail set to secure
it to the wall. Use as many nails as necessary to get a secure fit.
• Repeat this on the other side of the door.
5.B
CAULK FOR A SEAMLESS LOOK.
• Follow the directions on the caulk to prepare the caulking applicator/gun.
• Caulk the seams (meeting places) between the trim and the wall as well as between
the trim and the door frame. Wipe off excess caulk as you go for a smooth finish.
5.C
PAINT YOUR DOOR TRIM THE COLOR AND FINISH YOU PREFER USING A BRUSH
OR ROLLER.
ABOUT PAINTING OR STAINING YOUR DOOR:
THE TIMING IS UP TO YOU.
• You can paint or stain your door prior to installation, knowing that you’ll need to incorporate extra
time to apply color and let it dry.
• OR you can fully install your door, then use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to pop the hinge pins out
(with another person helping to secure the door, please), and take the door out of the frame for painting
or staining. Be sure to ask your helper to come back once the door is dry to hold the door as you reattach it,
one hinge pin at a time, to the door frame.
• See page 18 for additional information.
