1 EINFÜHRUNG

OBS-55 Optical Broadband LED Source

Die Test Sets wurden speziell entwickelt für höchste Anforderungen beim Test optischer Signale und Systeme, wie z. B. Breitband, PONs und Gigabit Ethernet.

Batteriebetrieb mit vier Zellen vom Typ AA sowie das robuste, stoßfeste Gehäuse ermöglichen lange Einsatzzeiten selbst unter schwierigsten Bedingungen im Feld. Netzbetrieb über ein separates Netzteil und die USB-Schnittstelle zur Fernsteuerung gestatten aber auch den problemlosen Einsatz des Geräts im Labor und im Produktionsumfeld.

Ergänzungen zur Bedienungsanleitung

Aufgrund der kontinuierlichen Verbesserung und Weiterentwicklung der SmartClass-Gerätefamilie deckt dieses Handbuch möglicherweise nicht alle neuen Funktionen Ihres gekauften Geräts ab.

Sollte eine Funktion nicht beschrieben sein, obwohl sie an Ihrem Gerät vorhanden ist, besuchen Sie bitte die Website von JDSU und prüfen Sie, ob dort eventuell weitere Informationen zur Verfügung stehen.

Dieses Gerät ist eine Lasereinrichtung der Klasse 1 gemäß DIN EN 60825-1:2001.

Beachten Sie beim Umgang mit dem Gerät und mit Lasersystemen im Allgemeinen folgende Anweisungen:

! Die Strahlungsquelle erst einschalten, wenn alle

Lichtwellenleiter angeschlossen sind.

! Vor dem Trennen von Lichtwellenleiter-Verbindungen

die Strahlungsquelle abschalten.

! Nie direkt in den Strahl einer Laserquelle oder in einen

daran angeschlossenen Lichtwellenleiter sehen.

! Nicht benutzte Messanschlüsse abdecken.

! Die üblichen Vorsichtsmaßnahmen beim Arbeiten mit

Kurzschließen der Batterien kann zur

beiden Pole nie gleichzeitig mit elektrisch leitenden Teilen berühren.

SNT-121A AC Netzteil/Ladegerät

Schutzklasse

Das SNT-121A Netzteil/Ladegerät (kurz: SNT-121A) ist schutzisoliert und entspricht IEC 60950.

Umgebungsbedingungen

Umgebungstemperatur zu hoch/zu niedrig!

VORSICHT

! Das SNT-121A nur in Innenräumen verwenden. !

Das SNT-121A nur bei Umgebungstemperaturen zwischen 0 und +40 °C betreiben.

VORSICHT

! Während des Betriebs des SNT-121A für

ausreichende Belüftung sorgen.

VORSICHT

! Das SNT-121A nicht bei Betauung betreiben. ! Lässt sich Betauung nicht vermeiden, z. B. wenn das

SNT-121A kalt ist und in einen warmen Raum gebracht wird, vor dem Einstecken warten, bis das SNT-121A trocken ist.

Temperaturen außerhalb des Betriebsbereichs von 0 bis +40 °C können das SNT-121A beschädigen oder dessen Funktion und Sicherheit beeinträchtigen.

Gerät auspacken

Verpackungsmaterial

Bitte bewahren Sie die Originalverpackung auf. Sie kann weiterverwendet werden, sofern sie nicht beim Transport beschädigt wurde. Im Falle einer Einsendung des Gerätes garantiert die Verpackung einen sicheren Transport.

Lieferumfang überprüfen

Ihr Gerät wurde mit folgendem Zubehör ausgeliefert:

• 1 Testadapter (BN 2150/00.xx)

• 4 Trockenbatterien, Typ Mignon/AA

• MT-1S Tasche mit Tragriemen

• Bedienungsanleitung

Auf Beschädigungen überprüfen

Überprüfen Sie das Gerät nach dem Auspacken bitte auf Transportschäden. Dies ist insbesondere notwendig, wenn an der Verpackung deutliche Beschädigungen sichtbar sind. Sind Schäden vorhanden, versuchen Sie nicht, das Gerät in Betrieb zu nehmen. Andernfalls können weitere Schäden entstehen. Im Falle einer Beschädigung setzen Sie sich bitte mit Ihrer nächstgelegenen JDSU-Servicestelle in Verbindung. Kontaktadressen finden Sie unter www.jdsu.com.

Maßnahmen nach Lagerung/Transport

Eine Betauung des Gerätes kann auftreten, wenn es bei geringen Temperaturen gelagert oder transportiert wurde und dann in ein wärmeres Umfeld gebracht wird. Um Beschädigungen zu vermeiden, nehmen Sie das Gerät erst in Betrieb, wenn keine Betauung mehr an der Geräteoberfläche zu sehen ist. Betreiben Sie das Gerät nur im spezifizierten Temperaturbereich (siehe

„Temperaturbereiche”, Seite 36) und warten Sie, bis es

sich abgekühlt hat, wenn es bei sehr hohen Temperaturen gelagert wurde.

Stromversorgung

Die OBS-55 können mit folgenden Spannungsquellen betrieben werden:

• vier Trockenbatterien, 1,5 V, Typ Mignon/AA, empfohlener Typ: Alkaline-Batterien

• vier wiederaufladbare NiMH-Batterien, 1,2 V (Typ Mignon/AA)

• SNT-121A Netzteil/Ladegerät

Gefahren beim Umgang mit Batterien

ACHTUNG

! Sicherheitshinweise für den Batteriebetrieb im Kapitel

„Batteriebetrieb”, Seite 6 beachten.

Austauschen von Batterien

! Ersetzen Sie die Batterien nicht einzeln. Wechseln Sie

immer alle vier Batterien zusammen aus.

! Jeweils nur vier gleichartige Batterien einsetzen. D.h.

keine Mischbestückung von Trockenbatterien und wiederaufladbaren Batterien.

Batterien ersetzen

Das Batteriefach befindet sich auf der Rückseite des Gerätes.

1. Deckel nach unten abziehen, um das Batteriefach zu öffnen.

2. Neue Batterien einlegen bzw. alte ersetzen.

Achtung: Korrekte Polung der Batterien beachten. Die

Nach dem Einschalten des Geräts werden Sie im Menü BATTERIE GEWECHSELT aufgefordert, anzugeben, ob Sie Trockenbatterien oder wiederaufladbare Batterien eingelegt haben.

Beim Umgang mit Batterien kann es zu Gefahren kommen. Beachten Sie daher nachfolgende Hinweise.

Trockenbatterien Betrieb mit wiederaufladbaren

Batterien

Batterien aufladen

Wird das SNT-121A Netzteil/Ladegerät zusammen mit wiederaufladbaren Batterien im Gerät verwendet und die Batteriekapazität fällt unter 10%, beginnt der Ladezyklus. Ein vollständiger Ladevorgang dauert ca. 3 Stunden. Das Gerät schaltet auf Erhaltungsladung um, sobald die Batterien vollständig geladen sind.

Wenn der Ladezyklus nicht startet, obwohl das SNT-121A Netzteil/Ladegerät angeschlossen ist, sehen Sie im Batteriefach nach, welcher Batterietyp eingelegt ist, und prüfen Sie, ob die Batterieeinstellung im Menü INFO richtig ist.

Hinweis: Der Batterietyp kann nicht über die Tastatur

nachträglich geändert werden. Um den Batterietyp zu ändern, muss wenigstens eine Batterie für mehr als 5 Sekunden entnommen werden. Nach dem erneuten Einsetzen erfolgt dann die Abfrage des Batterietyps. Der Typ wird bis zum nächsten Batteriewechsel gespeichert.

Hinweis: Die Batterien können nicht über die USB-

Schnittstelle aufgeladen werden.

Allgemeine Hinweise zum Gebrauch von Batterien

• Stets sorgsam mit den Batterien umgehen.

• Die Batterien nicht fallen lassen, nicht beschädigen und

keinen unzulässig hohen Temperaturen aussetzen.

• Die aufladbaren Batterien einzeln oder eingebaut im

Gerät nie länger als ein bis zwei Tage unter sehr hohen Temperaturen (z. B. im Auto) aufbewahren.

• Die entladenen Batterien nie längere Zeit im

unbenutzten Messgerät belassen.

• Wiederaufladbare Batterien nicht länger als sechs

Monate lagern, ohne sie zwischendurch aufzuladen.

• Tiefentladung vermeiden, da sich sonst die Polung

einer Zelle umkehren kann und diese Batterie unbrauchbar wird.

Umweltschutz

Batterien nach der Verwendung bitte nicht in den normalen Abfall werfen. Dies gilt nicht nur für den Wechsel, sondern auch für den Ausbau vor der Entsorgung des Gerätes. Batterien nach der Verwendung bitte nicht über den Hausmüll entsorgen. Geben Sie die Batterien bei speziellen Sammelstellen für Sondermüll oder Rohstoffverwertung ab, die es bereits in vielen Ländern gibt. Meist können Sie die Batterien auch dort abgeben, wo Sie neue kaufen. Batterien, die Sie von JDSU bezogen haben, nehmen unsere Servicestellen zurück.

Netzbetrieb

Achtung: Das OBS-55 darf nur über das SNT-121A

Den passenden Netzadapter einsetzen:

1. Benötigten Netzadapter wählen.

2. Adapter von oben in die Führung einschieben.

Den Netzadapter auswechseln:

1. Das SNT-121A wie gezeigt an eine Tischkante anlegen (siehe Bild 5).

2. SNT-121A nach unten drücken.

3. Anderen Adapter wie zuvor beschrieben einsetzen (siehe Bild 4).

Das OBS-55 am Netz betreiben:

1. Anschlusskabel des SNT-121A an der Buchse für die externe Spannungsversorgung am OBS-55 einstecken. (Die Buchse befindet sich unter der Abdeckung auf der rechten Geräteseite)

2. SNT-121A in die Netzdose einstecken.

Das OBS-55 schaltet sich automatisch ein, sobald es über das SNT-121A mit Strom versorgt wird.

Hinweis: Das SNT-121A übernimmt generell die

Das OBS-55 kann nicht über die USB-Schnittstelle mit Strom versorgt werden. Wenn nur USB als Stromquelle vorhanden ist, erscheint eine Warnung und das Gerät schaltet sich automatisch ab.

Stromversorgung des Gerätes, sobald es angeschlossen wird, unabhängig davon, ob Trockenbatterien oder wiederaufladbare Batterien eingesetzt sind.

Optische Kabel anschließen

Testadapter montieren

JDSU bietet diverse Testadapter, mit denen das OBS-55 an die zu testende Schnittstelle (Stecker oder blanke Faser) angeschlossen werden kann.

Diese Testadapter sind für alle gebräuchlichen Anschlusssysteme erhältlich. Die Testadapter sind sowohl für Stecker mit geradem Schliff (PC) als auch mit schrägem Schliff (APC) verfügbar.

Informationen zu den lieferbaren Adaptertypen erhalten Sie bei Ihrer JDSU-Servicestelle.

JAE-Testadapter wie folgt montieren:

1. Abdeckung aufklappen und Schutzkappe (falls noch montiert) vom Messanschluss entfernen.

2. Testadapter mit nach vorne geklapptem Verschlussbügel vertikal auf den Messanschluss stecken.

3. Verschlusshebel schließen, wenn der Adapter sauber aufliegt. Der Verschlussmechanismus rastet hörbar ein.

4. Bei Modellen mit zwei Anschlüssen in gleicher Weise mit dem zweiten Anschluss verfahren.

5. Das optische Kabel mit dem passenden Stecker auf den Testadapter stecken oder Abdeckung schließen.

Das Menü INFO öffnet sich. Es werden grundlegende Geräteinformationen angezeigt: Gerätename, Modellnummer, Seriennummer, Kalibrierdatum, Software-Version, eingestellter Batterietyp sowie ggf. Datum und Uhrzeit.

Firmware aktualisieren

Die im EEPROM gespeicherte Geräte-Software (Firmware) kann jederzeit aus dem Internet nachgeladen werden.

So finden Sie die jeweils aktuelle Version der Firmware:

1. Besuchen Sie die Website von JDSU unter

www.jdsu.com/test_and_measurement.

2. Wählen Sie Ihr Modell aus der Produktreihe aus.

3. Öffnen Sie den Downloadbereich und laden Sie die neueste Firmware herunter.

Dort findet sich auch eine Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung zur Durchführung des Firmware-Updates.

Gehen Sie nach dem Herunterladen der Firmware auf Ihren PC wie folgt vor, um die Firmware auf dem Gerät zu installieren.

So installieren Sie die Firmware auf Ihrem Gerät:

Testanschluss reinigen

Es ist empfehlenwert, die optischen Stecker auf Verschmutzungen zu überprüfen und sie im Bedarfsfall zu säubern. Selbst kleinste Staubpartikel an den Steckerendflächen oder in den Testadaptern können sich nachteilig auf das Messergebnis auswirken.

1. Gerät ausschalten.

2. Testadapter vom optischen Messanschluss abnehmen.

Die Anschlussfläche ist nun zugänglich.

3. Anschlussfläche mit einem in Isopropanol getränkten Wattestäbchen leicht abreiben. Dies ist eine sehr verlässliche Reinigungsmethode, die keine Rückstände hinterlässt.

4. Den Testadapter mit sauberer Druckluft ausblasen (Druckluft ist auch in Dosen erhältlich).

Schnittstelle

Der OBS-55 ist für die Fernsteuerung über einen PC mit einer USB-Schnittstelle ausgestattet. Die auf dem PC hierfür benötigten Treiberdateien können Sie unter www.jdsu.com/test_and_measurement herunterladen.

Der OFS-355 Download-Manager lässt sich schnell und problemlos installieren (siehe nächstes Kapitel). Dabei werden die entsprechenden Treiber automatisch mit installiert.

The OFS-355 Download Manager is a free download offered by JDSU which allows you to easily transfer stored measurement data to a PC, to enhance the performance of your SMART optical handheld devices, and to speed up production of your test reports.

To download the OFS-355 Download Manager:

1. Go to the JDSU web site: www.jdsu.com

2. Type OFS-355 in the search box.

3. Select OFS-355 from the search results list.

The OFS-355 information page opens.

4. Select the download tab.

5. Click on the download link to download the software and follow the instructions given.

• The OFS-355 Download Manager allows remote

control of a device connected to the PC. You can use this to measure the signal power level at intervals (and at several wavelengths) and transfer the data to the PC immediately. The data can be displayed as an incremental table or as a live graph.

Zum Einsatz kommen wiederverwendbare Transportverpackungen. Bevorzugt werden überall dort, wo es transporttechnisch möglich ist, unkritische Einstoffverpackungen.

Beim Aufbau eines eigenen Managementsystems

Nur durch umweltkompetente Partner wird die geforderte Sorgfaltspflicht erfüllt. Dieses schützt vor kritischen Fragen Dritter.

Bei der Entsorgung von Produkten

Dieses Produkt entspricht der europäischen Richtlinie 2002/96/ EC zur Entsorgung elektrischer und elektronischer Altgeräte (WEEE, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).

Entsorgen Sie diese Produkt nicht ungetrennt mit Ihrem Hausmüll, sondern führen Sie es einer getrennten Entsorgung gemäß Ihren nationalen Bestimmungen zu.

1 INTRODUCTION

OBS-55 Optical Broadband LED Source

The Test Sets are specially designed for high performance testing of all systems, i.e. broadband, PONs, and Gigabit Ethernet.

Battery operation from four AA batteries and the robust, shock-proof design provide long operating time in the field even under tough conditions. AC line operation via a separate AC adapter and the USB interface for remote control also ensure ease of use in the laboratory or production environment.

Unpacking the device

We suggest that you keep the original packing material. It is designed for reuse (unless it is damaged during shipping). Using the original packing material ensures that the device is properly protected during shipping.

Checking for shipping damage

After you unpack the device, check to see if it has been damaged during shipping. This is particularly likely if the packaging is visibly damaged. Recovery following storage/shipping

Condensation can occur if a device that is stored or shipped at a low temperature is brought into a warm room. To prevent damage, wait until no more condensation is visible on the surface of the device before powering it up. Do not operate the device until it has reached its specified temperature range and wait until it has cooled down if the device was stored at a high temperature (see „Ambient temperature”, page 38).

Recharging the batteries

If more than 90% of the battery capacity has been used, the batteries will be recharged when the SNT-121A Adapter/Charger and rechargeable batteries are being used to power the device. Complete recharging takes about 3 hours. The instrument switches to trickle charging automatically as soon as the batteries are fully charged.

If the charge cycle does not start although the SNT-121A Adapter/Charger is connected, check the battery type being used by looking in the battery compartment, and check the battery setting in the INFO menu is correct.

Note: The battery type cannot be selected using the

instrument keys. To change the battery type, you must open the battery compartment and remove at least one battery for more than five seconds. After you replace the battery, the OBS-55 will query the battery type. The battery type you select will be stored until you change the batteries again.

Note: The batteries can not be recharged by using the

USB interface.

General tips on using batteries

• Always handle batteries with care.

• Do not drop or damage the batteries or expose them to

excessively high temperatures.

• Do not store the batteries for more than one or two days

at very high temperatures (e.g. in a vehicle), either separately or fitted in the instrument.

• Do not leave discharged batteries in the instrument for

a long time if it is not being used.

• Do not store rechargeable batteries for more than 6

months without recharging them at intervals.

• Avoid deep discharging the batteries as this can cause

the cell polarity to reverse and make the battery useless.

Protect the environment

Please dispose of any unwanted dry batteries and rechargeable batteries carefully. They should also be removed from the instrument if it is to be scrapped. If facilities in your country exist for collecting such waste or for recycling, please make use of these rather than throwing the batteries in the normal trash. You will often be able to return used batteries to the place where you purchase new ones. Any dry or rechargeable batteries that you purchased from JDSU can be returned to one of our Service Centers for disposal.

To change the AC line plug adapter:

1. Place the SNT-121A against the edge of a table or bench as shown (see Fig. 5).

2. Push the SNT-121A downwards.

3. Slide a different AC line plug adapter into the slot (see Fig. 4).

To operate the OBS-55 from AC power:

1. Connect the SNT-121A DC power cord to the OBS-55 DC power socket. (The socket is under the cover on the right side.)

2. Plug the SNT-121A into the AC line socket.

The OBS-55 switches on automatically when powered from the SNT-121A.

Note: The SNT-121A provides power even if dry or

rechargeable batteries are fitted in the instrument.

The OBS-55 cannot be powered via the USB interface. If USB is the only power source, a warning is shown and the device is shut off automatically.

Connecting optical cables

Mounting test adapters

JDSU provides a number of test adapters for connecting the OBS-55 to the interface to be tested.

You can connect all standard optical connector types to the instrument using these adapters. The test adapters are suitable for connectors with planar (PC) and angled end surfaces (APC).

Contact your local JDSU Sales Company for available adapter types.

To mount the JAE test adapter:

1. Open the head cover and remove the protecting cap

(if still mounted).

2. Place the test adapter vertically on the optical

connector with the locking lever open.

3. Close the locking lever when the test adapter is firmly

seated. You will hear the locking mechanism lock.

4. Repeat the procedure if the device is fitted with two

ports.

5. Fit the fiber optic cable to the test adapter or close the

head cover.

Displaying device information

Updating the firmware

The latest version of the firmware can be downloaded from the internet at any time and stored in the EEPROM.

To find the latest firmware version:

1. Visit the JDSU web site at www.jdsu.com/

test_and_measurement.

2. Select your model from the product line.

3. Open the download area and download the latest

firmware.

You will also find step-by-step instructions on how to update the firmware there.

After downloading the firmware to your PC follow the steps below to install the firmware into your device.

To install the firmware into the device:

Maintenance or cleaning of the device when it is connected up or operating may damage the device or injure you.

WARNING

Cleaning the test port

It is a good idea to check that the optical connections are clean and to clean them if necessary before starting measurements. Even very small dust particles on the end surfaces of the plugs or in the test adapters can adversely affect the accuracy of the measurement.

1. Switch off the device.

2. Remove the test adapter from the optical connection.

The plug end surface is now accessible.

3. Wipe off the plug end surface using a cotton bud

soaked in isopropanol. This cleaning method is very effective and leaves no residues.

4. Blow out the test adapter with clean compressed air

(available in spray cans, e.g. Anti Dust Spray).

Note: Cover the optical connections with the dust cap

JDSU Environmental Management Program

The JDSU Environmental Management Program considers:

Product design and manufacture

Environmental restrictions and requirements are taken into account during planning and manufacture of JDSU products. This attention ranges form the raw materials and finished components selected for use and the manufacturing processes employed, through to the use of energy in the factory, and right on up to the final stages in the life of a product, including dismantling.

Hazardous materials

JDSU avoids or uses with care any hazardous or dangerous material in themanufacturing process or the end product. If the use of a dangerous material cannot be avoided, it is identified in product documentation and clearly labeled on the product itself.

Packaging materials

Preference is given to reusable or biodegradable singlesubstance packaging materials whenever possible.

Environmental management partnerships

JDSU encourages our customers and suppliers who take this responsibility seriously to join JDSU in establishing their own environmental management programs.

Recycling used products

This product complies with the European Union Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive (WEEE), 2002/96/EC. This product should not be disposed of as unsorted municipal waste and should be collected separately and disposed according to your national regulations.

In the European Union, all equipment purchased from JDSU after 2005-08-13 can be returned for disposal at the end of its useful life. Measuring systems affected by this can be recognized by the symbol on the right of a crossed-out trash can and a black bar. This symbol can be found either on the device or in the accompanying documents.
