Jaeger-leCoultre Reverso Grande GMT User Manual

Introduction
We congratulate you on the purchase of your JaegerLeCoultre watch and thank you for your confidence.
The Reverso Grande GMT presents two faces of time. On the front, it features a small seconds hand, a large date and a day/night display. The hours and minutes of a second time zone are displayed on the back, along with a 24-hour indication, an 8-day power-reserve and deviation from GMT.
We invite you to consult the operating instructions and we wish you great pleasure with your Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece.
Accuracy
Mechanical models with manual or automatic winding
The precision of the mechanical models is determined by the balance. The latter performs 21,600 or 28,800 vibrations per hour depending on the model (see technical characteristics).
Despite all the care that the Jaeger-LeCoultre masterwatchmakers have lavished on making and assembling your watch, its accuracy is subject to the influence of gravity, magnetic fields, shocks, as well as ageing of the oils. Its accuracy is measured by its rate regularity in various positions.
The nature of you temperament and of your daily activities may cause slight variations in timekeeping. If you were to notice that your watch is running slow or fast, we advise you to take it to an approved Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer, who will make any necessary adjustments.
Quartz models
The quartz models are accurate to within 2 to 3 minutes per year.
Water resistance
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watches are water-resistant to 3 bar/atm. This property is identifiable by the
symbol engraved on the case-back. This means that you can use your watch for short swims, and when diving from the poolside, but not from a diving board. It must not be used either for scuba diving or for sports where there are significant risks of hard knocks, such as windsurfing and waterskiing. Please also note that leather straps are not suitable for aquatic activities.
It is also essential to have the water resistance of your watch regularly checked by an authorised Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer at least once every 2 years, and definitely before any period in which it will undergo prolonged and / or regular immersion.
The «1000 Hours Control» test by Jaeger-LeCoultre
Jaeger-LeCoultre subjects its watches to the rigorous « 1000 Hours Control » test programme. Unique in its kind, this test consists of 1000 hours of comprehensive, stringent checks.
The « 1000 Hours Control » seal or marking, affixed or engraved on the back of your watch, cer tifies that it has undergone this observation programme in our laboratories and has successfully passed all tests. The latter include rate regularity checks, reactions to changes in temperature and barometric pressure, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, as well as water-resistance tests. Your watch is therefore capable of withstanding the trials of everyday life when you wear it on your wrist.
The criteria of the « 1000 Hours Control » programme go far beyond the official timekeeping test standards, which concern only part of the movement. Jaeger-Lecoultre tests not only the movement before casing it in the watch, but also the fully assembled watch.

- 28,800 vibrations per hour.
- Power reserve : 8 days.
Movement
Use
Power reser ve
Your Reverso Grande GMT watch is endowed with an 8-day power reserve, during which time it can operate without any need of winding.
Winding
Crown in position 1.
Winding is performed by turning the crown clockwise and is completed when the hand of the power-reser ve indicator, located on the back dial (at 2 o’clock) is on 8.
No buffer stop will indicate that the movement is completely wound, because excess winding is absorbed by slippingsprings. This prevents you from damaging the gear-train.
Setting the hour and minutes on the front dial
Pull the crown out to position 3.
Move the hands forward clockwise until the desired time is displayed, taking into account the day/night indication at 2 o’clock.
When the operation is completed, push the crown back to position 1.
Rapid date adjustment
Pull the crown out to position 2.
Turn the crown clockwise until the correct date is displayed.
Then push the crown back to position 1.
N.B.: Date correction should not be performed between
10.00 pm and 3.00 am. During that period the automatic date-change mechanism is already in action.
Adjusting the second time zone (back dial)
In the GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) system used practically throughout the world, the earth is divided into 24 time zones, each corresponding to 15 degrees’ longitude (see table below).
In each of these time zones, the official time is the same and it changes by one hour when moving from one zone to the next.
Setting out from the Greenwich meridian, the central or 0 point of time-zones, 12 zones have been defined from +1 to +12 hours moving eastward and 12 others from 0 to –11 hours moving westward.
The Reverso Grande GMT model features two complications on its back dial, linked to the GMT system :
- It can display a second time zone complete with the 24hour indication specifying whether it is day or night.
- In the GMT indication at 7 o’clock, it also automatically displays the difference between the time zone hour on the back and the GMT time reference.

The GMT indication and its synchronisation
For the GMT display to be correct, it requires a prior stage of synchronising the GMT indication with the Greenwich Mean Time hour reference. This stage is necessary when the watch is first put into operation and at summer/winter time changes (see specific cases).
Set the local time of your home time zone on the back dial (the minutes are synchronised with the hand-fitting on the front), by means of the side pushpieces.
- Each press on the pushpiece above the crown moves the main hand one hour forward.
- Each press on the pushpiece below the crown moves the main hand one hour back.
- Be sure to take into account of day/night indication on the 24-hour counter.
After setting the local time, open your Reverso case on the side to gain access to the adjustment corrector concealed on the lower edge of the watch.
Each press on this «secret» corrector moves the GMT indication hand one hour forward, in a clockwise direction. Using the corrector tool supplied with the watch, press this corrector until the GMT indication hand indicates the exact time difference between the home time zone and the GMT time zone.
The GMT indication is now synchronised; push the case back into its housing.
Nota bene :
- Once synchronised, the GMT hand will not move while the watch is in operation, provided that you do not change time zone.
- When you change the time zone on the back by pressing the side pushpieces, the GMT hand moves forward or back simultaneously in 1-hour jumps at each press, so as to indicate the new difference between the time zone chosen and the GMT reference time.
Use of the second time zone
You can now set any second time zone on the front dial of your Reverso Grande GMT watch. By referring to a GMT system table, identify the time difference between the time zone that you want to display and the GMT time zone. By pressing the side pushpieces, move the time forward or backward until the GMT indication hand indicates the differential selected.
Since the time of the second time zone is synchronised with the settings, it will be automatically displayed while taking account of the day/night indication.
Note
It is not possible to indicate a time difference of a fraction of an hour, as is the case in some regions of the world (India, Iran, Nepal).
Special cases : Adjustment for summer/winter time changes
If you live in a country in which the local time is moved forward by one hour during the summer months, you should correct the synchronisation of the GMT indication when these time changes occur.
- First of all adjust the time change on the front dial of the watch by moving one hour forward to switch to daylight saving time, or by moving one hour back to return to the winter time.
- This operation simultaneously drives the hour hand on the back dial in the same clockwise direction, thereby desynchronising the GMT indication, which has not moved during this operation.
- Proceed to resynchronise the GMT display as indicated above.
