Jaeger-leCoultre Master Compressor Geographic User Manual

Introduction
We congratulate you on the purchase of your JaegerLeCoultre watch and thank you for your confidence.
Endowed with a normadic travelling spirit, your Master Compressor Geographic timekeeper offers you a global time display. It reveals a unique patented feature : the dial lay-out displays multipe time zones and enables incredibly simple adjustment of the time anywhere in the world.
We invite you to consult the operating instructions and we wish you great pleasure with your Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece.
Accuracy
Mechanical models with manual or automatic winding
The precision of the mechanical models is determined by the balance. The latter performs 21,600 or 28,800 vibrations per hour depending on the model (see technical characteristics).
Despite all the care that the Jaeger-LeCoultre masterwatchmakers have lavished on making and assembling your watch, its accuracy is subject to the influence of gravity, magnetic fields, shocks, as well as ageing of the oils. This accuracy is measured by its rate regularity in various positions.
The nature of your temperament and of your daily activities may cause slight variations in timekeeping. If you were to notice that your watch is running slow or fast, we advise you to take it to an approved Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer, who will make any necessary adjustments.
Quar tz models
The quar tz models are accurate to within 2 to 3 minutes per year.
Jaeger-LeCoultre quar tz watches contain a battery and electronic components. When performing maintenance, your official Jaeger-LeCoultre Ser vice
Centre or your authorised Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer will take charge of their recovery and disposal in accordance with the standards in force.

Water resistance
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Geographic watches are water-resistant to 10 bar/atm. This proper ty can be identified by the
symbol engraved on the case-back. This means that you can use your watch during shor t swims or when diving in from the edge, but not from a diving board. Nor should it be used for undersea diving or for sports where there are significant risks of hard knocks, such as windsurfing and waterskiing. Please also note that leather straps are not suitable for aquatic activities.
Furthermore, it is essential to have your watch’s water-resistance checked by an authorised Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer at least once every two years, and definitely before any period in which it will undergo prolonged and/or regular immersion.
The «1000 Hours Control» test by Jaeger-LeCoultre
Jaeger-LeCoultre subjects each of its watches to the rigourous «1000 Hours Control» test programme. Unique in its kind, this test consists of 1000 hours of comprehensive, stringent checks.
The «1000 Hours Control» seal or marking affixed or engraved on the back of your watch certifies that it has undergone this obser vation programme in our laboratories and has passed all the tests, relating to rate regularity, temperature and atmospheric pressure, resistance to impacts and magnetic fields, as well as water-resistance. Your watch is therefore capable of withstanding the trials awaiting it in everyday life when you wear it on your wrist.
The criteria of the «1000 Hours Control» programme go far beyond the official timekeeping test standards, which concern only par t of the movement. Jaeger-LeCoultre tests not only the movement before casing it within the watch, but also the watch as a whole.
Compression keys
Equipping the crowns of the Master Compressor line models, the patented compression key system can apply strong compression to one of the 4 crown seals, thereby ensuring impeccable long-term water resistance.
The “open” or “closed” position of the compression key is indicated by the arrow symbols (viewed from the dial side) :
- The compression key is in the compressed seal position (“closed”) if the indication is a white arrow; the keys must be closed when you wear your watch and when you are taking par t in sports. You must not make any adjustments or set the time in this position, since this might damage the gaskets.
- The compression key is in the non-compressed seal position (“open”) if the indication is represented by two red arrows; in this configuration, you may proceed to start the watch and adjust the functions according to the indications below.
The transition from the “closed” to the “open” position, or vice-versa, is performed by turning the key using the wingnuts in the direction indicated by the arrow(s).
Note The water-resistance function of the compression key is separate from the operation of the crown itself. Even in closed position, the key does not lock the crown. It is thus in practice possible to handle the crown when the key is in the compressed seal position. However, as mentioned ear lier, it is extremely inadvisable to make adjustments in this position, since this might damage the seals. We recommend that you first turn the compression key to the “open” position before performing any adjustments on your watch.

Movement
Functions and displays
The Master Compressor Geographic model features a dual time display which mechanically indicates (thanks to mechanical coupling with a 24 time-zone disc according to the international GMT system) :
- The local hour, minutes and seconds.
- The local date.
- The city selected from the 24 GMT time zones as the second time zone.
- The hour and minutes in the second time zone selected.
- The AM/PM indication of the second time zone in the form of an aper ture which makes it possible to know whether the time is morning (AM) or afternoon (PM).
Use
Functions associated with the crowns and corrector
Crown A (at 2 o’clock) enables you to :
- Select the city required for the second time zone in the rotating disc at 6 o’clock, and thus automatically display its time in the small dial.
Crown B (at 4 o’clock) enables you to :
- Wind the watch if it has not been worn for more than 43 hours.
- Synchronize the local time with that in the second time zone, taking account of the AM/PM indication.
- Local time setting with stop seconds function (the movement also changes time in second time zone).
Corrector C (at 3 o’clock) allows you to :
- Correct the date.
Starting the watch
Couronne B
Crown B
Turn the compression key to the «open» position in the direction of the arrow. Crown B is thus in position 1.
A few clockwise turns of the crown are enough to set the watch running. It will then automatically wind up while you are wearing it. Please note that the crown does not lock on winding, even when the watch is fully wound.
When the operation is completed, turn the compression key to the «closed» position in the direction of the arrows.

Local time setting
Crown B
Turn the compression key to the «open» position in the direction of the arrow.
Then pull crown B out to position 3.
The movement is thus locked (stop seconds function). To enable precise time setting in seconds, stop the seconds hand at 12 o’clock.
Move the hands to the desired time, by going past 12 o’clock. If the date changes with the transition, it is midnight; if not, it is midday. On the hour signal, push the crown back in to position 1.The watch starts r unning again.
When the operation is completed, turn the compression key to the «closed» position in the direction of the arrows.
Setting the date
The date hand automatically moves one day forward between
8.30 pm and 3.30 am, as displayed on the main watch dial.
By pressing pushpiece C using the stylus provided with the watch, you move the date forward manually until you reach the correct day, such as when adjusting the date for months of less than 31 days.
Note : date correction should not be performed between
8.30 pm and 3.30 am. During that period the automatic date-change of date mechanism is already in action.
Adjusting and selecting the second time zone
GMT System
The Master Compressor Geographic model is mechanically programmed according to the international system governed by Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). In this system, the world is divided into 24 time zones, each 15° longitude in width (see map below). In each of these time zones, the official time is the same and it changes by one hour when moving from one zone to the next.
Setting out from the Greenwich meridian, the central or 0 point of the time zones, 12 zones have been defined from +1 to +12 hours moving eastward and 12 others from 0 to –11 hours moving westward.
We have personalised each time zone using the name of a city which is displayed in the window at 6 o’clock.
In the interests of legibility, we have refrained from indicating on the city disc the few regions where the official time differs by fractions of an hour (India, Iran, Nepal).
The minute hands of the two time zones shown on the Master Compressor Geographic model thus move simultaneously.
Pre-setting : synchronization with the second time zone
Adjusting the second time zone requires a pre-adjustment synchronizing the time in the second time zone, the city and local time, in order to indicate to the mechanism the reference city and time (local). This is done just once, so long as the main time zone remains the same.
However, it will need to be done again if you change time zone during a trip and you wish to keep local time as your main time.
- First operation : crown A
Turn the compression key to the «open» position in the
direction of the arrow. Then pull crown A out to position 2.
By turning the crown, display in the window at 6 o’clock,
opposite the triangular marker, the city which corresponds to the time zone in which you are currently located (local city). The hour hand on the small dial moves on, while the minute hand remains synchronized with the large minute hand.
Push the crown back to position 1 and turn the compression
key to the «closed» position in the direction of the arrows.
- Second operation : crown B
Turn the compression key to the «open» position in the
direction of the arrow. Then pull crown B out to position 2.
Moving the crown forward or backward will make the hour
hand of the second time zone move accordingly.
Set the time on this second dial to the same time as on the
main dial, and display the appropriate AM (morning) or PM (afternoon) indication in the window at 11 o’clock.
Push the crown back to position 1 and turn the compression
key to the «closed» position in the direction of the arrows.

The second time-zone dial shows the same time as displayed by the large hands : this is normal, since you have displayed the city located in your own time-zone in the window at 6 o’clock. Your two displays are now synchronized.
Selecting the city : automatic display of the hours and minutes in the second time zone
Your watch is running, pre-adjustment has already been performed and you have not modified the local time since this operation. If this is not the case, first proceed to the synchronization pre-adjustment.
Note : before selecting the city (crown A), make sure that the synchronization crown (crown B) is in position 1 (not pulled out). Failure to comply with this order might damage the adjustment mechanism.
Crown A
Turn the compression key to the «open» position in the direction of the arrow. Then pull crown A out to position
2. Turn the crown backward or forward and display the city required for the second time zone in the rotating disc at 6 o’clock, opposite the triangular marker. The time in the selected time zone is automatically displayed on the small dial, and thanks to the AM/PM aperture, you can check whether it is morning or afternoon.
Push the crown back to position 1 and turn the compression key to the «closed» position in the direction of the arrows. Note The fact that it is necessary to pull on crown A to actuate the city disc constitutes a security measure. In particular, it prevents any unintentional rotation of the city mechanism.
Special cases : Setting the Master Compressor Geographic model for daylight saving time changes
Local time in certain countries is moved forward one hour during the summer months. However, there is no single rule applicable worldwide.
The Master Compressor Geographic model is mechanically programmed and thus cannot take account of these local variations. However, since it is possible to synchronize the two displays, the problem is easily resolved by your watch.
A.You live in a country that changes time in summer; for the second time zone, you want to display a city that does not change time.
Turn the compression key of crown B to the «open» position in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- Moving from winter time to summer time :
Pull crown B out to position 3 and move the time one hour
forward (local time). Push crown B back in to position 2 and move the hour on the second dial one hour backward.
Push the crown back to position 1.
Your watch shows the summer time on the main display
and winter time on the small dial.
- Changing from summer time to winter time :
Pull crown B out to position 3 and move the time one hour
backward (local time). Push crown B back in to position 2 and move the hour hand on the second dial one hour forward.
You are now synchronized with GMT again.
Turn the compression key to the «closed» position in the direction indicated by the arrows.
B.You live in a country that does not change time in summer; for the second time zone, you want to display a city that has changed time.
Turn the compression key of crown B to the «open» position in the direction indicated by the arrow. Pull crown B out to position 2 and move the hour on the second dial one hour forward. Push the crown back to position 1.
Turn the compression key to the «closed» position in the direction indicated by the arrows. You have thus automatically adopted the exact summer time displayed on the second dial for those countries which have opted for this system.
For the other countries, however, the times will have to be corrected by deducting one hour. After time setting, you will need to check the time zone calibration.
