Jaeger-leCoultre Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic Navy SEALs User Manual

Introduction
Congratulations on the purchase of your Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, and thank you for your confidence.
Produced in par tnership with the elite divers of the American armed forces, the United States Navy SEALs, this new generation diving watch is distinguished by a case with extreme high-pressure resistance. The completely innovative Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch is equipped with a mechanical depth gauge on the outer flank of the case, with a clear hand display on the dial. In addition to depth measurement, it has a multiple time-zone display. You need only position a representative city in the window at 6 o’clock for its time to be immediately displayed on a dial at 9 o’clock.
Accuracy
Accuracy is ensured by the balance, which completes 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Despite all the care with which the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre master-watchmakers have made and assembled your watch, its accuracy is subject to the influence of gravity, magnetic fields, impac ts and ageing of the oils. Watch accuracy is measured by rate regularity in a variety of positions.
The nature of your constitution or lifestyle may lead to slight irregularities. If you obser ve irregular running of your watch, you are advised to take it to an authorised Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer, who will make any necessary adjustments.
Water-resistance
Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are water-resistant to 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 or 100 atm, depending on the model (see technical specifications). This property can be identified by the
symbol engraved on the case-back. This means that your timepiece has been tested to an immersion pressure equivalent to 30, 50, 100, 200, 300 or 1000 metres, according to the number of atmospheres shown beside the aforementioned symbol (1 atm = 10 metres).
Please note that leather straps are not suitable for water spor ts.
It is essential to have your watch’s water-resistance regularly checked by an authorised Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer, and definitely before a period of intensive use.
The «1000 Hours Control» test by Jaeger-LeCoultre
Jaeger-LeCoultre subjects each of its watches to the rigourous “1000 Hours Control” test programme. Unique in its kind, this programme consists of 1000 hours of comprehensive, stringent checks.
The “1000 Hours Control” seal or marking affixed or engraved on the back of your watch certifies that it has undergone this obser vation programme in our laboratories and has passed all the tests, relating to rate regularity, temperature and atmospheric pressure, resistance to impacts and magnetic fields, as well as water-resistance. Your watch is therefore capable of withstanding the trials awaiting it in everyday life when you wear it on your wrist.
The criteria of the “1000 Hours Control” programme go far beyond the official timekeeping test standards, which concern only par t of the movement. Jaeger-LeCoultre tests not only the movement before casing it within the watch, but also the watch as a whole.

Compression keys
The compression key fitted on the crowns of Master Compressor line watch models is a patented system which enables additional compression of one of the 4 crown gaskets, which boosts your watch’s water-resistance in the long term.
The “open” or “closed” position of the compression key is indicated by the arrow symbols (viewed from the front):
- The compression key is in the compressed gasket position (“closed”) if the indicator shows only one arrow; the keys must be closed when you are wearing your watch and when you are taking part in sports. You must not make any adjustments or set the time in this position, since this might damage the gaskets.
- The compression key is in the non-compressed gasket position (“open”) if the indication is represented by two arrows; in this configuration, you can star t the watch and set the functions as per the explanations below.
The transition from the “closed” to the “open” position, or vice-versa, is performed by turning the key using the wingnuts in the direction indicated by the arrow(s).
Note
The water-resistance function of the compression key is separate from the operation of the crown itself. Even in the closed position, the key does not lock the crown. So in practice it is possible to handle the crown when the key is in the compressed gasket position. However, as mentioned earlier,
it is extremely inadvisable to make settings in this position, since this might damage the gaskets. We recommend that
you first turn the compression key to the “open” position before making any settings on your watch.
The switch from the “closed” to the “open” position, or viceversa, is made by turning the key using the wing-nuts in the direction indicated by the arrow(s).
Master Compressor Diving, divers’ watches meeting the NIHS 92-11 (ISO 6425) standards
Master Compressor Diving line watches, which bear the title “diving watches”, satisfy the requirements of the Swiss Watchmaking Industr y Standard (NIHS) 92-11, reproducing the European standard ISO 6425.
Notice
As a precaution, please note the following two recommendations:
- You must not operate the crowns in water,
- You must not use Master Compressor Diving watches for deep dives (diving with a gas mixture, in which the diver spends alternating periods between the water and a pressurised chamber), or at a depth greater than that indicated.
Impor tant notice:
Elementary r ules for diving – Diving with the Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch:
Please note the following points:
- Dives must be performed under your own responsibility, and in accordance with the elementary rules of diving. There are certain risks inherent in this activity, such as accidents or unforeseen physiological reactions. You need to be a holder of a diving certificate, or make the dive as part of diving training dispensed by specialised professionals, and be fully equipped for this activity to ensure your own safety. Sports diving in special environments, known as “technical diving”, requires special techniques and equipment (gas mixtures, rebreathers, etc.) and a formal safety approach, which can only be provided by diving professionals.
- Never dive alone; your watch is under no circumstances a substitute for a diving professional.
- Always dive with at least two depth gauges (instruments measuring depth), including one professional diving computer with electronic depth gauge. Diving computers indicate multiple parameters such as the body’s nitrogen level, calculate decompression stops or measure water temperature, etc. They will always be the most suitable technology for providing accurate multi-purpose tools for diving. It is utterly inadvisable to use the Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch without a diving computer as a primary tool. Furthermore, any use of a mechanical depth gauge requires perfect knowledge of the laws governing the use of diving tables, as the safety rules applicable for these are the same as for diving with a computer.
- Any opening or technical service manipulation of the Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch case must be verified by an authorised Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer. Furthermore, before any period of intensive use, your watch must undergo a check-up by an authorised JaegerLeCoultre retailer.
Maximum depth and water-resistance
The Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch is water-resistant to 30 atm (approximately 300 metres).
The depth gauge on the Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch indicates depths from 0 to 80 metres.
Please note that taking the watch down below 80 metres does not pose any danger to the depth gauge mechanism. In this case, its hand stops just after the ‘80’ mark on the scale. The mechanism has a stop that halts the indicator in this position. Once the watch returns to a depth of 80 metres, the indicator hand will start moving again, according to the depth measured, up to zero metres.

Movement
Time functions
By virtue of a mechanical coupling with the international GMT system 24 time-zone disc, the Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch has a double time display, which, by a simple adjustment on the sub-dial at 9 o’clock, can indicate the time in one of the world’s 24 time-zones, selected on the 24-city disc.
So this watch has a mechanical display featuring:
- The “local” hour, minute, and date (for your place of residence).
- The city selected for the second time-zone.
- The hour in the second time-zone selected, with a 24-hour indicator.
The Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic Navy SEALs watch is mechanically programmed according to the international Greenwich Mean Time system (GMT).
Under this system, the world is divided into 24 timezones, each 15 degrees longitude in width (see map below). In each of these time-zones, the official time is the same; the official time varies by one hour when you pass between timezones.
Starting from the Greenwich meridian, time-zone centre 0, 12 zones have been defined ranging from +1 to +12 hours Eastward and 12 zones ranging from 0 to -11 hours Westward.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has per sonalised each of these time-zones with the name of a city, which is displayed in the window located at 6 o’clock on the dial of your watch.
So as not to compromise the overall legibility, the city disc does not show the few regions in which the official time differs by a fraction of an hour (e.g.: India, Iran, Nepal).
Star ting the watch
Crown A
Turn the compression key to the “open” position in the direction of the arrow. Crown A will then be in position 1.
A few clockwise turns of the crown will suffice to star t the watch. The small black disc with a luminous bar through it, in the 5 o’clock position, will then start moving. This function, which completes one revolution in 60 seconds, acts as an operating indicator to demonstrate that the watch is running.
The watch will then automatically wind up when you wear it. Please note that the crown does not lock on winding, even when the watch is fully wound.
Once the operation is complete, turn the compression key to the “closed” position in the direction of the arrows.

Order of settings
The settings on your watch must be made in the order indicated below, as per the following instructions:
1) Set the time-zone hour and minute hands
2) Set the date and local hour hand
Set the second time-zone hour and minute hands
This first setting consists of adjusting the city disc, and the second time-zone hour and minute hands to provide the mechanism with the reference parameters.
1
st
operation: setting the city disc (select local city).
Crown B
Turn the compression key to the “open” position in the direction of the arrow.
Pull crown B out to position 2.
Turn the crown clockwise or anti-clockwise, so that the window at 6 o’clock opposite the triangular marker displays the city corresponding to the time-zone that you are in (your local city).
Once the operation is complete, push the crown back into position 1 and turn the compression key to the “closed” position in the direction of the arrows.
2
nd
operation: setting the second time-zone hour hand (dial at
9 o’clock) and local time minute hand.
Crown A
Turn the compression key to the “open” position in the direction of the arrow.
Pull crown A out to position 3.
The movement will then be locked (the operating indicator will stop).
Turn the crown clockwise. Note: the local hour hand and date are automatically driven by this operation, but their final settings will be made independently, as per the instructions for the next stage.
As you turn the crown, keep an eye on both the second time-zone hour hand (in the sub-dial at 9 o’clock) and the main minute hand.
Move the hour hand in the sub-dial forward to obtain the local time, while observing the 24-hour display system, opposite the small triangle in the 9 o’clock position. Keep turning the crown to move the main minute hand to the desired local time position.
Once the operation is complete, push the crown back into position 1 and turn the compression key to the “closed” position in the direction of the arrows. The watch will then star t running again.
Note: daylight saving time / winter time
Perform the two operations above to correct the second time-zone for the summer time (DST) and winter time changeovers.
The configuration of the city disc corresponds to a relative time-zone position in winter time (legal time).
For a correct second time-zone reading during summer time (DST), you need to consider the geographic location of the country in question, i.e. whether it is in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere.
The Northern Hemisphere countries which apply daylight saving time do so between March/April and October:
- In Europe (except Iceland): between the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October.
- In Nor th America: between the first Sunday of April and the last Sunday of October.
Some Southern Hemisphere countries also apply the hour change, but on different dates. The three cities concerned which are shown on the time-zone disc of your watch are Rio de Janeiro, Auckland and Sydney, for which daylight saving time runs from October to Februar y or March (according to annual decrees).
Setting the local date and hour hand
The Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch has a local hour hand quick-setting function, which is also used for setting the date.
In position 2, crown A can move the local hour hand in onehour jumps, while driving the date (in both directions). The minute hand keeps running, maintaining an accurate watch setting.
1
st
operation: setting the date
Crown A
Turn the compression key to the “open” position in the direction of the arrow.
Then pull crown A out to position 2.
The date can be corrected by one day by turning the local hour hand through two revolutions of the dial (the hour hand makes one-hour jumps).
Turn the crown forward or backward (depending on the closest distance between the indicated date and the desired date), and turn the hour hand as many times as necessary until the desired date is displayed.
Keep the compression key in the “open” position to go directly to the 2
nd
setting below, for the hour hand.
Master CoMp ressor Diving pro ge ographiC navy seaLs
- English 4/9
2
nd
operation: setting the local hour hand
Crown A
The compression key is still in the “open” position.
Then pull crown A out to position 2.
Move the main hour hand (local time) forward or backward past midnight to bring it to the desired time, in order to take account of the date indicator:
- You have turned the crown clockwise: if the date moves forward when the hands pass midnight, you are moving into the morning.
- You have turned the crown anti-clockwise: if the date moves backward when the hands pass midnight, you are moving back into the evening.
Once the operation is complete, push the crown back into position 1 and turn the compression key to the “closed” position in the direction of the arrows.
Correcting the local time setting when travelling and changing between summer time/winter time
Go directly to the 2
nd
operation to quickly set your watch for simple hour changes (in cases not involving minute or date changes). For example, to set the time for your new local time-zone when travelling, or changing between summer time and winter time.
Make sure to turn the compression key to the “open” position in the direction of the arrow first, whenever you want to change the local hour hand in this configuration.
Selecting the city for automatic time display of the second time-zone
Following the above settings, the hour hand in the second time-zone dial will indicate the same time as the hour hand in the main dial. This phenomenon is normal, since the dial at 6 o’clock indicates the city in your local time-zone. The city selection function is operational.
NB: before selecting the city, you need to ensure that the synchronisation crown (crown A at 2 o’clock) has been pushed back into position 1 (not pulled out). Failure to comply with this order might damage the correction mechanism.
Crown B
Turn the compression key to the “open” position in the direction of the arrow.
Then pull crown B out to position 2.
Turn crown B clockwise or anti-clockwise, to display the city desired for the second time-zone at 6 o’clock opposite the triangular mar ker. The hour for the selected time-zone will then be displayed automatically in the sub-dial at 9 o’clock, directly with 24-hour accuracy.
Case functions
Diving bezel
The Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch is equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel (i.e. one that can only be turned anti-clockwise), with a mark every minute.
To use the diving bezel, you need only grip it with two fingers and turn it anti-clockwise to the desired position.
Mechanical depth gauge
Please consult the explanations and advice beforehand in the chapter ‘Mechanical depth gauge on the Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic watch’ in the introduction section.
Operating underwater
No action is required on your par t is required for the depth gauge to work underwater. It reacts to the water pressure and transmits the depth information to the hand on the dial via a transmission circuit, which includes the two components known as the “rack” and “central pinion”, which you can see via the openworked dial.
The display on the dial is indicated by the blue hand on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 80 metres. This is graduated for each metre from 0 to 50 metres, then every two metres from 52 to 80 metres.
Operating out of water
The depth gauge function was created to be easily visible even in a non-aquatic environment. At any time, you can lightly press on the depth gauge membrane head, to observe the movement of the hand according to the force of the pressure. You can increase the pressure until the maximum hand reading is reached (80 metres). The hand will return to its ‘zero’ position when you release the pressure.

Side opening
An opening on the side of the depth gauge compartment reveals the membrane, which reacts to water pressure.
It should be noted that inside the compartment the membrane itself is completely water-resistant. Via the opening, water enters the compar tment, in a confined space on the left-hand side of the membrane (when the watch is viewed from the front); but water does not penetrate inside the membrane, i.e. inside the mechanism, the movement or the watch.
Recommendations
To ensure that the depth gauge works properly, follow the recommendations below:
- Whenever you have used your watch underwater, rinse it
under a gentle flow of clean water (tap water for example) so that water gets into the depth gauge compartment. Then tilt the watch with the depth gauge opening downwards to get rid of the water and any small residue.
- To avoid damaging the depth gauge membrane, make
sure to avoid inserting into the opening any object that could come into contact with the membrane and deform it. However, if this occurs, consult an authorised JaegerLeCoultre retailer for a check-up of the mechanism.
Adjusting the wristlet
Note: the wristlet illustrations below may not correspond either to your wristlet or your watch, but the demonstration illustrated is completely identical and valid.
Adjusting the clasp
The clasp on metal bracelets and articulated rubber straps is fitted with an adjustment system enabling you to lengthen or shorten the wristlet by 4 mm on either side, for greater wearer comfort.
Using the fine adjustment system
