the Responsible Body for use of this equipment reads this Instruction book and
ensures the user(s) are suitably trained in its operation before use.
ITA Instruments (Innovative ThermoAnalytic Instruments) have designed their new
range of Laboratory Mantles for the dedicated laboratory professional, whether it’s used
for training Scientists of tomorrow in Schools, Colleges and University’s or used by the
professional laboratory scientist. Either way the ITA mantle surpassed all others in the
market. It’s fully certified to meet the (highest) safety regulations. With its fully sealed
heating element completely safe from solution spillages it is unique to the market.
Two variants of the mantle have been designed to cater for all types of laboratory
requirements. The range is introduced with a heating mantle available to accommodate
glassware sizes from 100 ml to 1000 ml.
(Non-Stirred Version) Arbitrary temperature is set using the control knob located in the
facia panel.
(Stirred Version) Arbitrary temperature is set using the control knob located on the left
hand side of the facia panel. Arbitrary stir speed is set using the control knob located on
the right hand side of the fascia panel.

2.
SAFETY FIRST.
Electric shock and Fire prevention.
This mantle is non-serviceable. Do not attempt to open the case.
Ensure the mantle is connected to the correct voltage as detailed on the rating
label found on the back of this product. Use the moulded IEC plug and cord set
provided with your mantle or a replacement moulded IEC plug and cord set as
stated in the technical section of this manual.
Never operate the Mantle without connection to a ground or earth point.
Ensure the electrical supply is earthed in accordance with local legislation.
Only replace fuses with that of the type and rating as detailed in the technical
section of this manual.
Never operate the mantle with wet hands.
General Safety
It is recommended that good laboratory practice be observed when using the
mantle. Observe your organisations and legislative health & safety procedures
and all associated legislation applicable to your areas of operation. Check all
your laboratories procedures for substances being heated ensuring all hazards
(e.g. release of toxic or flammable gases, explosion and implosion) that might
arise have been fully addressed before proceeding. Note, when heating certain
substances the liberation of hazardous gases may require the use of a fume
cupboard or other means of extraction.
Always use the mantle on a clean, non-combustible, sturdy work surface with
at least 300mm suitable clearance all around from other equipment.
Ensure the mantle is position so that it can easily be disconnected from the

Instruction book in order to preserve the protection afforded by the equipment.
This product has been design for safe operation when used as described in the following
pages of this document. If the following information is not strictly followed to your basic
safety may be compromised and any warranty / guarantee may become invalid. ITA

defect, this does not affect your statutory rights.

Never touch the mantle heating surface or glassware while it is in operation.
Never lean over the mantle or glassware when it is in operation.
Never immerse the mantle in water or liquids.
Avoid spilling any solution into the mantle. If a solution is split into the mantle
disconnect it from the mains electrical voltage supply and follow the
instructions as show in the maintenance section of this manual.
Never cover the mantle while the mantle is in operation. Never block of
obstruct the top ring ventilation holes.
The mantle must never be switched on without a charged glass flask in position
The mantle must never be left unattended while in operation.
The stirring mechanism of the advance model may generate magnetic fields
which can be interrupted by metal objects. Always keep magnetic data devices
such as credit cards and door swipe passes away from the mantle.
Always keep the moulded IEC plug and cord set away from the heating surface.
The equipment is not spark, flame or explosion proof and has not been
designed for use in hazardous areas in terms of BSEN 60079-18. Keep
flammable, low flash point substances away from the apparatus.
2.1 Safe installation.
The mantle is designed to be used safely under the following conditions only:
Indoor use only.
Below an altitude of 2000 meters.
Maximum relative humidity of 80% at 35° C and decreasing linearly to 50%
relative humidity at 40° C
The mains supply voltage is not to fluctuate by more than 10% of the nominal
voltage.
Transient overvoltage’s typically present on the mains supply. Overvoltage
category II.
Applicable rated pollutions degree 2.
2.2 This mantle must be earthed / grounded to a fixed earth / grounded mains
socket outlet. The mains supply is to earthed / grounded in accordance with current
legislation.
2.3 Ensure only the correct rated mains input fuses are fitted. See Technical
Specification for recommended fuse ratings. (Where applicable ensure the correct

2.4 Check to voltage shown on the Mantle data label and ensure it conforms to your
mains voltage supply.
2.5 It is strongly recommended that the mains supply should incorporate a RCD or GFCI
device that has a current tripping of 30mA or less. In the event of over current being
drawn the device will cut off power to mantle immediately.
2.6 Do not install the Mantle on any surfaces that may become wet or flooded.
2.7 The mantle is supplied with a moulded lead and plug set which is wired as detailed.

in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not
installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications.
However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does
cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off

3.1 ITA Instruments (Innovative ThermoAnalytic Instruments) have designed and
manufacture their new range of Laboratory Mantels to the highest standards of
environmental protection without any compromise to its performance or durability.
3.2 At the end of your Mantle’s life, it must not be discarded as domestic waste.
Ref: EU Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive
(WEEE). Please contact your distributor / supplier for further information. For end
users outside of the EU consult applicable regulations. Please note that mantles
should only be dismantled by an authorised recycling company.
3.3 This Mantle must be accompanied by a completed Decontamination Certificate prior
to any disposal. Copies of the Certificate are available from your distributor of ITA
Instruments (Innovative ThermoAnalytic Instruments) products or the example
found in the back of this instructions book may be copied and enlarged.
4.1 The mantle variant number is determines its model size and type. See the table below

5.
MANTLE OPERATION.
Please note the Element cover material will turn brown upon first use. This is
perfectly normal and is part of first heating process of the product.
5.1 This mantle has the facility to heat its maximum designated fluid capacity to a
maximum temperature of the fluid heat absorbency. Typically 100 Degrees
Centigrade for pure water at sea level.
5.2 Fasten a retort rod into position using the fastening nut located on the rear of the
mantle.
5.3 Fill a suitable glass vessel with the fluid that is to be heated. Take care not to
overfill the glass vessel above the stated capacity. Place the glass vessel in the
bowl shaped centre of the mantle. Place it in gently to avoid splashing the fluid or
cracking the glass.
5.4 Using a clamp fasten the neck of the glass vessel to the retort rod.
5.5 Ensure the rotating knob found on the front fascia is in the ‘Off’ position aligned
with the red dot.
5.6 Ensure the RED On/Off Rocker switch located on the side of the mantle is in the
off position.
5.7 Plug the IEC mains cable supplied with the mantle into the rear of the mantle in
the IEC socket. Ensure the correct voltage is applied through your mains electricity
supply before connecting the mantle.

5.8 Press the red rocker switch found on the side of the mantle to the on position.
The switch should illuminate to indicate that mains electricity has been applied
and switched on.
5.9 A red LED on the front fascia label should also illuminated to show the heating
facility is ready be operated.
5.10 Turn the control knob located on the centre of the fascia label clockwise to
commence heating. The further clockwise the knob is turned, the greater amount
of power there will be applied to the heater. The scale is an indication only and
each position suggest the application of approximately 10 percent power applied.
At the maximum position 100 percent of power is applied. It is the responsibility
of the user to control the power and subsequent heat amount to be applied to
the solution in the glass vessel.
5.11 To decrease the amount of power applied to the solution in the glass vessel turn
the control knob anti-clockwise.
5.12 When removing the glass vessel always observe your laboratory precautions and
use suitable protective gloves and face mask to protect you from the hot glass
vessel and its solution.
5.13 After use disconnect the mantle from the mains electrical supply. Always wipe
away any surface spillages using a soft damp cloth before storing the mantle.
Never wipe the element especially if it is still hot.
Stirring operation (On ITAMS versions)
5.14 Place a stir bar into the solution. (Ensure the stir bar is sufficient in size to stir the
solution in the size of glass vessel selected).
5.15 Rotate the right hand stir speed selection knob clockwise until the stir bar is
rotating at the desired speed.
5.16 To decrease the stir speed, rotate the right hand stir knob anti-clockwise.

6.1 Top Cover and Base moulding are made ABS flame retardant plastics.
6.2 Element is environmentally sealed assembly that is water resistant.
6.3 Mains leads supplied are made with moulded IEC plug and lead sets with a cord
spec H05 V V-F-. The UK version is supplied with a mains fuse rated at 5A.

SPILLAGE, CARE AND MAINTENANCE.
Unplug the unit from the mains voltage supply and allow it to cool before
undertaking any maintenance tasks.
Maintenance should only be carried out under the direction of the
Responsible Body, by a competent electrician. Failure to do so may result in damage
to the product and in extreme cases be a danger to the end user.
7.1 Spillage
In the event of a major spillage possible occurring as a result of a glass vessel
failing follow the following instructions.
Non Corrosive spillage.
In the event of non-corrosive spillage turn the mantle off at the I/O Rocker switch.
Unplug the mantle from the mains electrical supply cord and gently turn the mantle on
its right side to drain off any excess spilt fluid. Carefully remove any broken glass media
should it be present. Wipe off all excess liquid from the mantle element protector and
surrounding area using an absorbent soft cloth. Plug the mains electrical cord back into
the mantle. Turn on the mantle via the mains switch located on the side of the unit. Turn
the control knob to the first position. Allow half an hour for the mantle to dry out. Now
turn the control knob to full power for a further 15 minutes. Finally turn off the mantle
and allow it to fully cool before recommencing use.
Corrosive and solvent spillage.
In the event of a corrosive or solvent fluid spillage turn the mantle off at the I/O Rocker
switch. Unplug the mantle from the mains electrical supply cord and turn the mantle its
right side to drain off any excess spilt fluid. Carefully remove any broken glass media
should it be present. Now pour in 250ml of cold water into 100 / 250ml mantles and
1000ml of cold water into 500 and 1000ml mantles. Allow the mantle to stand for a
minute to dilute corrosive content. Now turn the mantle its right side to drain of the
water / corrosive fluid mixture. Remove the Top Rim and Element Cover as per
paragraph 7.3.3, 7.3.4 and 7.3.5. of the user guide. Rinse the element cover in cold
water and wipe any fluid off the element ring. Replace the element cover over the
element asper paragraph 7.3.6. of the user guide. It doesn’t matter if it is still wet.
Replace and fasten the element ring as per paragraphs 7.3.7 and 7.3.8. of the user guide.

Wipe off all excess liquid from the mantle using an absorbent soft cloth. Plug the mains
electrical cord back into the mantle. Turn on the mantle via the mains switch located on
the side of the unit. Turn the control knob to the first position. Allow half an hour for the
mantle to dry out. Now turn the control knob to full power for a further 15 minutes.
Finally turn off the mantle and allow it to fully cool.
Prior to further use, the Responsible Body shall check the electrical safety of the unit.
Only if all safety requirements are met can the unit be used again. The above
procedure is intended as a guide. Should spillage occur with a toxic or hazardous fluid
then special precautions may be necessary. Refer to the safety data sheet for the fluid
being used.
Decontamination Certificate.
Note: In the event of this equipment or any part of the unit becoming damaged, or
requiring service, the item(s) should be returned to the manufacturer for repair
accompanied by a decontamination certificate. Copies of the Certificate are available
from Distributor/Manufacturer. Appendix A of this instructions book may be copied
and enlarged.
7.2 Care
With a small amount of care the mantle will continue to work reliably for many
years.
Maintenance for the unit should include the following:

7.3 Maintenance
7.3.1 Replacement of the Mantle fuse.
The mains fuse holder is located at rear your product. Refer to Technical
specification section 6.3, ‘Fuse Rating’ for correct fuse type and rating. Turn
your product off and disconnect it from the mains supply before attempting
to replace the fuses. If the fuses constantly blow please return your mantle to
your agent or manufacturer for further investigation.
Replacement of the Element protector.
7.3.2 From time to time the Element protector may become worn and discoloured.
This will result in the glass vessel making direct contact with the element of
the mantle. Replacement Element protectors are available from your
distributor or directly from the manufacturer of your mantle. To replace the
Element protector proceed as follows:
7.3.3 Using a small 1 point Pozidrive screwdriver remove the three retention
screws holding down the Top Rim. These screws are located through vent
holes of the Top Rim. Remove the screw and keep them for refitting later.

7.3.4 Lift off the Top Ring assembly from the mantle.
7.3.5 Lift out of the mantle the worn Element protector.
7.3.6 Take the new replacement Element protector and place it into the mantle so
that it covers the element. Ensure that as it is placed over the element it
doesn’t crease or fold.
7.3.7 Reposition the Top Ring Assembly ensuring the fixing holes align.
7.3.8 Refit the previously removed screws using a Pozidrive screwdriver.
Note: This product should only be dismantled for recycling by an authorized
recycling company.

8.
DECONTAMINATION.
8.1 If the mantle has been exposed to contamination, it is the Responsible
Body is duty to carry out suitable decontamination. If hazardous material has been
spilt on or inside the mantle, decontamination should only be undertaken under the
control of the Responsible Body with due recognition of all possible hazards. Before
commencing with any cleaning or decontamination method, it is strongly
recommended the Responsible Body should check with the manufacturer the
proposed method will not damage the equipment.
8.2 Prior to further use, the Responsible Body must check the electrical safety of the unit.
This should be performed by a competent Electrician. Only when all safety
requirements are met should the mantle be used again.
Note: The above procedure is intended as a guide. Should spillage occur with a toxic
or hazardous fluid then special precautions may be necessary.
8.3 Decontamination Certificate.
8.3.1 In the event of this equipment or any part of the unit becoming damaged, or
requiring service, the item(s) should be returned to the manufacturer for
repair accompanied by a decontamination certificate. Copies of the
Certificate are available from Distributor/Manufacturer. The
Decontamination Certificate found in this instructions book at the back may
be copied and enlarged.
Note: At the end of life, this product must be accompanied by a
Decontamination Certificate.
