INTRODUCTION
Thank you for choosing the Sirius. IsoTek is a UK-based company that
specialises in power management systems for hi-fi and home cinema
applications. Formed in 2001, the company has rapidly become a world leader in
mains conditioning and filtration, developing a wide range of innovative, awardwinning products - tailor-made solutions to suit every system and every pocket.
Thanks to IsoTek’s market-leading expertise and painstaking attention to detail,
its products are able to make significant improvements in sound and picture
quality while protecting components from spikes and surges in the mains
electricity supply.
INSTALLATION
Sirius is part of IsoTek’s new EVO3 range and it replaces the old Multi-Way. It has
been developed to offer phenomenal performance in a discrete and purposeful
casing, which can easily be place behind an audio rack or wall-mounted, making
it ideal for custom installation projects. Sirius not only offers enhanced
performance for all audio systems but also a substantial degree of protection,
ensuring your hi-fi system is not damaged by dangerous power surges or spikes,
a problem which is becoming increasingly common. We recommend using Sirius
with IsoTek’s range of high-quality screened power cables.
The Sirius is fitted with the international IEC mains input socket. Any IEC
cable with a minimum 10-amp rating can be used. Ideally, this should be a
fully screened cable. IsoTek offers a range of cables that meet this
specification. These start at around £60 and rise to just under £200. Two 10
AMP HRC ceramic fuses can be found in the pull-out draw under the IEC
input. The second fuse is a spare; only HRC fuses should be used.
Please give the Sirius adequate ventilation. In confined areas it is possible
that the Sirius’s protection circuitry will cause the unit to trip – if this happens,
simply allow greater ventilation (the Sirius will require two minutes to
automatically reset). The Sirius can also be wall mounted conveniently
behind your audio system or in custom installation projects. A full bracket
fixing kit is included.
On the top of the Sirius you will notice six dedicated sockets. These can be
used for your whole audio system and are not component dependent.
Contrary to advice given by manufacturers of similar units, NEVER
disconnect the Sirius during an electrical storm. There is a small risk of a
direct lightning strike and at that moment, this could present a risk to life.
Whilst connected, the Sirius not only protects your audio system – it also
helps to protect your whole house.
COMPONENT OUTLETS
Sirius features six component outlets
offering a combined 2400VA for all
European countries and some of Asia
(240V) and 1000VA for the United States
and some Asian countries (110V). All
outlets are fully isolated from each other
and offer the same level of performance –
therefore there are no componentdependent outlets. Simply plug your audio
or audio-visual components into any of
Sirius’ six high-quality, unswitched outlets
for improvements in sound and protection.
INDUCTIVE
RESISTANCE GATE
The Sirius features a variation of IsoTek’s Gating technology called ‘Inductive
Resistance Gate’, which uses the principles first discovered by Michael Faraday
in 1839 relating to the reaction between electricity and magnetism. Faraday soon
realised that there were imperfections in all materials – this is now referred to as
‘resistance’ and is usually seen as an unavoidable by-product of material usage.
However, through innovative research, IsoTek has turned this negative effect into
a positive principle, which balances the inductance and resistance of the circuit to
produce an ideal operational environment for the new EVO3 Sirius filter to
function. Cross-contamination between connected components is eradicated as
a result.
K.E.R.P TECHNOLOGY
Historically, IsoTek has always created ideally balanced circuits based upon the
scientist Kirchhoff’s current laws. Previously, however, the company’s engineering
team felt this was only fully achievable in the reference range of power
conditioning products, but through continued research it was discovered that,
with the careful use of materials applied in the correct topology, it was possible to
bring these concepts to the much lower-priced Sirius. This major breakthrough
has been termed ‘Kirchhoff’s Equal Resistance Path’ (or
K.E.R.P. For short) and ensures optimum power sharing from one socket to the
next. As a result, unlike many other power distribution strips, every component
plugged into a Sirius is guaranteed to receive electricity of an equally high quality.
PROTECTION
In tandem with enhancing the performance of the equipment attached, powerconditioning products should also provide adequate protection for both the
system and the conditioning unit itself. IsoTek has always taken this element
extremely seriously and its products offer unique, real-world solutions that are far
superior to those available elsewhere. In line with other products from IsoTek’s
latest EVO3 range, the Sirius features IsoTek’s most advanced protection circuitry
to date – real-world, fit-for-purpose solutions to real-world problems. Unlike other
power strips that claim to provide spike/surge protection, the Sirius delivers rocksolid protection time and time again – whenever it is needed – without
undermining sound quality.
It is important to understand that to be truly effective, the conditioning and
protection circuitry in a product like Sirius must be built for purpose; there should
be an appropriate level of protection for each relevant situation. For a high-quality
power conditioner aimed specifically at the high-fidelity audio market, this means
voltage, transients, sound quality and, crucially, safety. Many products sold by
competing brands appear to offer good specifications, but unfortunately do not
address the appropriate real-world problems. For example, it is implied that by
having vastly over-specified and over-engineered protection figures you are
somehow magically protected against thunderstorms. One must remember that
an average lightning strike can easily destroy an entire house. In fact, the biggest
danger is the loss of the neutral cable from a multi-phase distribution system
(local power grid). Put more specifically, the neutral cable can become detached
in a storm and jump to another phase; here, the protection has to work for
sufficient time to disconnect a thermal fuse. This is something that 90 per cent of
competing products fail to address, but in real-world situations it is far more
relevant issue.
Another important aspect of protection is to remove transients caused by
switches – these voltages are frequent and typically as high as 6000 volts.
Through the appropriate use of components, IsoTek EVO3 products completely
neutralise the dangerous effects of these transients as well as improving sound
quality. IsoTek’s unique protection circuits deliver real-world solutions to real world
problems and are the best the industry currently has to offer.
