Please take a few minutes to read this manual to familiarize yourself with important information regarding

installation, product features, and operation.

As with most electronic devices, ORIGINAL PACKAGING (OR EQUAL) IS REQUIRED in the unlikely event

that the product needs to be returned for servicing.

Installation

Environment

Never place this product in an environment which could alter its performance or reduce its service life. Such environments usually include high levels of heat, dust, moisture, and vibration.

Safety

1. Read these instructions.

2. Follow all instructions.

4. Do not use this apparatus near water.

5. Clean only with a damp cloth.

6. Do not block any of the ventilation openings.

7. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

7. MASTER 1 VOLUME CONTROL

Use this control to adjust the overall output level of the internal power amplifiers in stereo mode(see page

8). In mono mode (see page 8), it controls the volume of the speakers connected to the AMP 1 terminals. In addition to that, it permanently controls the volume of the MONO SUB OUT output.

8. MASTER 2 VOLUME CONTROL

Use this control to adjust the volume of the MASTER 2 OUT output. In mono mode (see page 8), it controls the volume of the speakers connected to the AMP 2 terminals.

9. DUCKING SWITCH BUTTON

When the DUCKING function is active, applying a signal to the Microphone 1 input automatically attenuates the Line signal to background level.

10. MICROPHONE INPUT 1

Balanced XLR input connector with the following pin configuration: 1 = ground 2 = signal + (hot) 3 = signal - (cold) This input accepts dynamic and condenser microphones. Pin 2 and Pin 3 carry the phantom supply voltage required for condenser microphones. This input also provides the "Ducking" function (9).

Same specifications as microphone input 1, but without “ducking” function. Both microphone inputs can be used simultaneously.

18. STEREO SPEAKER OUTPUT

Do not connect total speaker loads of less than 4 ohms per channel (see page 9 and 10).

19. BRIDGE SPEAKER OUTPUT

This output must be used only in Bridge Mode. The connected speaker impedance must not be below 8 ohms .(see page 9 and 10).

20. MASTER 2 OUTPUT

This balanced XLR output has the following pin configuration: 1 = Ground 2 = Signal + 3 = Signal This output can be used for connection of external power amplifiers. Its volume is adjusted with the Master 2 volume control.

21. MONO SUB OUT

This balanced XLR output carries a monophone version of the signal with an additional 100 Hz/12 dB lowpass (high-cut) filter. Use this output to connect active subwoofer cabinets or power amplifiers for driving subwoofer cabinets. The level of this output is adjusted with the Master 1 control.

22. MODE SWITCH

Use this switch to set EMI-300 to stereo, mono or bridge mode (see page 8). When using this switch, always observe the instructions on pages 8, 9 and 10.

23. STEREO/MONO SWITCHES

Use these switches to set the internal amplifiers (Master 1) or the Master 2 output to mono mode.

24. 1/4" INSERT JACKS

These 3-pole TRS jacks with break contacts are electronically located before the internal power amplifiers. You can use them to connect external sound processor devices, such as equalizers, effect units etc. The tip contact carries the Send signal from the EMI-300, the ring contact expects the Return signal from the external device (see page 12).

25. LINE INPUTS (5 x)

Use these RCA-type inputs to connect your stereo sources, e.g. CD players, tuners or tape recorders. Use the buttons (12) to(16) to select one of the inputs.

26. GAIN CONTROLS FOR LINE INPUTS (5 x)

Use these controls to compensate different output levels of your stereo devices. Start out with all controls in center position to be able to boost or attenuate the LIne input levels (see page 11).

27. RECORDING OUTPUT

This stereo output carries the microphone signals and the selected line input signal. This output is affected by the setting of the microphone controls (2) and (3) and the line volume control (4).

Operational Modes

The EMI-300 can be operated in 3 modes (Stereo/Mono/Bridge) that can be selected with the AMP ROUTING switch (22). Depending on the selected mode, your speakers have to be connected to the EMI-300 in a slightly different manner for every mode. For this reason you should first choose an operational mode that suits your needs best from the listing below.

If you want to connect more than one speaker to each output, e.g. for installing them in different rooms, also read the instructions on page 9 and 10.

How do you want to operate your EMI-300?

As a versatile stereo set

- Stereo mode

Switch the AMP ROUTING switch into its left position and connect your speakers to terminals AMP 1 (left channel) and AMP 2 (right channel). The following controls apply in this mode:

MIC1 = volume microphone 1 MIC2 = volume microphone 2 VOLUME = volume of active line input LOW / HIGH = master EQ MASTER 1 = overall volume

As a distributed background sound system

- Mono mode

Switch the AMP ROUTING switch into its right position and connect your speakers to terminals AMP 1 and AMP 2. Since this mode yields a monaural output signal, all speakers carry the same signal. The following controls apply in this mode:

MIC1 = volume microphone 1 MIC2 = volume microphone 2 VOLUME = volume of active line input LOW / HIGH = master EQ MASTER 1 = volume of speakers at AMP 1 terminal MASTER 2 = volume of speakers at AMP 2 terminal

As a loud sound system for presentations or announcements

- Bridge mode

Switch the AMP ROUTING switch into its right position and connect your speakers to the BRIDGE OUT terminals (19). Do not use the other speaker terminals in this mode. The following controls apply in this mode:

MIC1 = volume microphone 1 MIC2 = volume microphone 2 VOLUME = volume of active line input LOW / HIGH = master EQ MASTER 1 = overall volume

Connection of Speakers

SINGLE SPEAKER PAIR

In stereo and mono mode, connect the speakers to the AMP 1 and AMP 2 outputs (18). For bridge mode, use the BRIDGE MODE terminals (19). Watch for identical polarities of the speakers to avoid sound cancellations. The output power capacity of the built-in amplifiers is used with best possible efficiency when it they work into a 4 ohms speaker load (8 ohms in bridge mode). Higher impedances (e.g. 8 ohms or 16 ohms) decrease the available output power, impedances below 4 ohms (8 ohms for bridge mode) can overload the outputs.

CONNECTION OF MORE SPEAKERS

When connecting a number of speakers to the EMI-300, always observe the polarities to avoid sound cancellations. In the following examples always observe the correct speaker polarity. In a network of speakers, all speakers should produce the same volume. This is given when all cabinets have the same individual impedance and when the network has a symmetrical structure. The illustration below shows examples of a symmetrical and an unsymmetrical network (all speakers are assumed to have the same impedance):

PARALLEL AND SERIES WIRING

When connecting several speakers to one output terminal, you have the choice between using parallel or series wiring. Parallel wiring should be used when the speakers have individual impedances of 8 ohms or higher. Use series wiring for speakers with 4 ohms or less impedance.

HOW TO WIRE SPEAKERS IN PARALLEL

Connect all '+' terminals of the speakers to the red '+' terminal of the output and all '-' terminals of the speakers to the black '-' terminal. For practical use, it might be easier to connect the first speaker to the EMI-300 and the following speaker to the terminals of first speaker, like shown in the illustration below. As shown in the the table below, impedances below 4 ohms should not be used for the EMI-

300.

HOW TO WIRE SPEAKERS IN SERIES

Series wiring means that the speakers are daisychained, very much like the small bulbs in a christmastree illumination set. When making the connections, you have to make sure that the signal flow inside a speaker is always from '+' to '-', like in the illustration below. In a series wiring, the impedances of the individual speakers add up to the total impedance, which in turn increases with every new speaker in the chain. In order to keep the total impedance low, series wiring should only be performed with speakers that have low individual impedances (4 ohms or less).

CALCULATION OF IMPEDANCES

For calculation of the total impedance Z also use the formulas below.

MIXED WIRING

By making clever use of both series and parallel wiring, it is often possible to wire a larger number of speakers to built a network with 4 ohms total impedance. If you want to use four identical speakers per channel, you can use one of the sample networks below. Both networks are wired so that the resulting total impedance equals the individual speaker impedance. If, for example, 4 ohms speakers are used, the total impedance will also be 4 ohms which perfectly matches the EMI-300 amplifiers

After the speakers are installed, you can now connect all your stereo devices, such as CD players, cassette

players, tuner etc. to their correspondent RCA-type inputs.

One line input can be selected at a time with its correspondent button (12) to (16).

Ducking Function

The ducking function provides automatic attenuation of the line signal when the microphone is used. To make use of the ducking function, use the microphone inputs MIC 1 and activate the DUCKING button (9). Talking into the microphone at normal level will now automatically fade the line signal volume to background level. At speech pauses, the line signal will automatically be faded back to normal level. To prevent self-attenuation of the line signal, do not hold the microphone too close to the speakers when the ducking function is active.

Bei aktivierter „Ducking” Funktion wird bei einer Durchsage über Mikrofoneingang 1 das Line-Signal automatisch auf Hintergrundlautstärke heruntergeregelt.

Mit diesem Schalter wird der EMI-300 zwischen den Betriebsarten Stereo, Mono und Bridge umgescheltet. Beachten sie beim Umschalten unbedingt die Hinweise auf den Seiten 24, 25 und 26.

23. STEREO/MONO SCHALTER

Mit diesen Schaltern können die interne Endstufe (Master 1) und der MASTER 2 OUT Ausgang unabhängig voneinander auf Mono umgeschaltet.

24. INSERT-BUCHSEN

Diese 3-poligen Unterbrecher-Klinkenbuchsen liegen im Signalweg am Eingang der internen Endstufen. Sie dienen zum Anschluss von externen Sound-Prozessoren, wie Equalizer, Effektgeräte usw. Beieinem eingesteckten Klinkenstecker liegt am Spitzenkontakt das ausgesendete Signal an, am Ringkontakt erwartet der Mischer das zurückgeführte Signal (s. Seite 28).

25. LINE-EINGÄNGE (5 x)

An diese Eingänge können Stereo-Geräte der Unterhaltungselektronik angeschlossen werden, wie z.B. CD-Spieler, Radio-Tuner oder Kassetten-Recorder. Von den angeschlossenen Geräten kann jeweils eines mit den Tastern (12)-(16) ausgewählt werden.

26. PEGEL-VORREGLER FÜR LINE-EINGÄNGE (5 x)

Mit diesen Reglern können Lautstärkeunterschiede der Line-Eingänge ausgeglichen werden. Als Standard-Einstellung sollten zunächst alle Vorregler in der Mittelstellung stehen, so dass ein Ausgleich nach oben oder unten möglich ist (s. Seite 27).

27. RECORDING-AUSGANG

An diesem Stereo-Ausgang liegen alle aktiven Line-und Mikrofon-Signale an. Das Signal ist nur von den Mikrofonreglern (2) und (3) bzw. vom Line-Volumenregler (4) abhängig.

Betriebsarten

Der EMI-300 kann in den 3 Betriebsarten Stereo, Mono und Bridge betrieben werden, die mit dem AMP ROUTING Schalter (22) angewählt werden. Da die Wahl der Betriebsart den Anschluss der Boxen beeinflusst, sollten sie als erstes eine zu ihrer Anwendung passende Betriebsart auswählen. Suchen sie aus den unten aufgeführten Anwendungen die für Sie passende heraus. Falls Sie an jeden Ausgang mehrere Boxen anschließen wollen wollen, z.B. zur Beschallung von verschiedenen Räumen, beachten Sie außerdem die Hinweise auf den Seiten 25 und 26.

Wie möchten sie ihren EMI-300 betreiben?

Als vielseitige Stereoanlage.

- Stereo-Modus

Bringen sie den AMP ROUTING Schalter in die linke Stellung und schließen sie ihre Boxen an die Lautsprecherklemmen AMP 1 (linker Kanal) und AMP 2 (rechter Kanal) an. Folgende Regler sind in dieser Betriebsart wichtig:

ANSCHLUSS EINES BOXENPAARS

Schließen sie ihre Boxen im Stereo- und Mono-Modus an die Lautsprecherklemmen (18) an, und nur im BRIDGE Betrieb an die Klemmen (19). Achten sie beim Anschluss auf gleiche Polarität beider Boxen, da sich sonst Klangauslöschungen ergeben können. Die vom EMI-300 zur Verfügung gestellte Verstärkerleistung wird optimal ausgenutzt, wenn die Impedanz der Boxen 4 Ohm ist. Bei höheren Impedanzen (8 Ohm oder 16 Ohm) wird die Ausgangsleistung geringer, bei Impedanzen unter 4 Ohm können die Endstufen überlastet werden.

ANSCHLUSS MEHRERER BOXEN

Wenn mehrere Boxen an den EMI-300 angeschlossen werden, müssen deren Polari täten beachtet werden um Klangauslöschungen zu vermeiden. Beachten sie in den folgenden Anschlussbeispielen daher stets die korrekte Polarität (+ = Signal / - = Masse). In einem Boxen-Netzwerk sollten alle Boxen gleich laut sein. Dies ist sichergestellt, wenn alle Boxen die gleiche Einzelimpedanz haben und wenn das Boxen-Netzwerk symmetrisch aufgebaut ist. Folgende Abbildung zeigt ein Beispiel für ein symmetrisches und ein unsymmetrisches Boxen-Netzwerk (alle Boxen mit gleicher Impedanz):

PARALLEL- UND REIHENSCHALTUNG

Wenn sie an einen Ausgang mehrere Boxen anschließen möchten, können sie eine Parallelschaltung oder eine Reihenschaltung benutzen. Eine Parallelschaltung bietet sich an, wenn ihre Boxen eine Impedanz von 8 Ohm oder mehr haben, eine Reihenschaltung bei 4 Ohm Boxenimpedanz.

SO MACHEN SIE EINE PARALLELSCHALTUNG

Bei einer Parallelschaltung mehrerer Boxen werden die Pluspole aller Boxen wie unten gezeigt an den Pluspol des Ausgangs (rote Klemme) angeschlossen, die Minuspole an den Minuspol (schwarz). In der Praxis wird oft die erste Box direkt an den Verstärkerausgang angeschlossen wird, die zweite Box an die Polklemmen der ersten Box usw.

SO MACHEN SIE EINE REIHENSCHALTUNG

Bei einer Reihenschaltung mehrerer Boxen werden die Boxen wie bei einer Lichterkette hintereinander verbunden. Hierbei ist darauf zu achten, dass die Stromrichtung in jeder Box immer vom (+) Pol zum (-) Pol führt. Bei einer Reihenschaltung addieren sich die Einzelimpedanzen der Boxen zur Gesamt-impedanz. Da sich die Gesamtimpedanz mit jeder weiteren Box erhöht, eignet sich die Reihenschaltung für Boxen mit niedrigen Einzelimpedanzen, z.B. 4 Ohm.
