Verify contents
Inspect the package and contents for visible damage. If any
components are damaged or missing, do not use the unit; contact
the supplier immediately. If you need to return the unit, you must
ship it in the original box.
The package should include the following contents:
• Reader assembly with base and cover
Description
The Model 1109 Extended Range Proximity Reader is designed for
parking lot applications. The reader can be mounted on any
nonmetallic wall or freestanding mounting pedestal.
The reader is capable of reading GE 125 kHz proximity technology
(Proxlite) badges
.
• Model 1109 Extended Range Proximity Reader Installation Sheet (this document)
• Mounting kit (includes self-tapping mounting screws and wall
anchors)
• TORX driver for reader security screws
• Mounting template (0601-0000640+00)
• WIU-4 board
Communication protocol
The reader outputs Wiegand 4002 (40-bit format) when Proxlite
badges are read. A WIU-4 must be used to communicate with the
8RP reader boards or the M2000 controller.
Wiegand format 4002 must either be loaded in the controllers or
the component DIP switches must be set to properly read badges.
Refer to Table 1 and Table 2.

Installation
The reader can be attached directly to any nonmetallic wall
surface. If the reader is mounted to a metal surface, a spacer
mounting plate is recommended to decrease the effects of
reduced read range caused by the metal surface. For parking
lot applications, it is recommended that a freestanding pedestal
and polycarbonate mounting housing be used to mount the
reader.
Find a suitable mounting location for the reader. An ideal
location is away from any electronic devices such as a
computer monitor, gate control, or road sensors.
Remove the reader cover by removing the three security
screws located along the bottom edge of the reader. You'll
replace the cover after mounting and wiring the reader (See
“Reader wiring on page 4.”)
To mount the reader to a wall:
1. Make a cutout in the wall to install the WIU-4 or a two-
gang US electrical box. Refer to the Wiegand Interface Unit Four-State (WIU-4) Installation Manual for details.
2. Wire and install the WIU-4 inside the wall or inside the twogang electrical box. If installed in the wall, provide
protection against shorting to metal wall studs. Refer to the
Wiegand Interface Unit Four-State (WIU-4) Installation
Manual for details.
4. Drill four 0.218 in. (5.54 mm) diameter holes through the
reader base plate in the recesses shown in Figure 1 and
Figure 2.
Wire the reader in accordance with “Reader wiring on page
5.
4.”
6. Attach the reader base to the wall using four #10 screws
provided.
Note: We recommend that you apply a bead of silicone
caulking between the reader base and the wall on all sides.
Leave a 1 in. (25.4mm) gap on the bottom for beeper sound
discharge.
3. Using the template supplied, drill four mounting holes for
the #10 wall anchors.

7. Mount the reader base on the housing lid using the four
#10 (5 mm) self-tapping mounting screws provided.
Figure 3: Mounting the pedestal
To mount the reader on a pedestal:
Note: We recommend that you mount a polycarbonate housing
to the pedestal, and then the reader mounted to the housing.
This will prevent any interference from the metal pedestal,
helping to improve reader range. Contact GE Security Sales
Engineering for part number.
1. Drill four 0.250 in. (6.4 mm) minimum diameter holes in the
housing to match pedestal mounting slots.
Drill a 0.750 in. (19 mm) diameter hole in the center of
mounting holes for cable routing.
2. Secure the housing to the pedestal using hardware shown
in Figure 3.
Note: W
e recommend that you use a bead of silicone
caulking to seal around screw heads and between the
pedestal mounting plate and polycarbonate housing.
3. Wire and install the WIU-4 inside the housing. Refer to the
Wiegand Interface Unit Four-State (WIU-4) Installation
Manual for details.
4. With the housing cover closed, use the supplied template
to drill four 0.159 in. (4.04 mm) diameter mounting holes
and one 0.750 in. (19 mm] diameter hole for cable routing
through the housing lid. See Figure 4 below.

To mount multiple readers:
Note: In multiple reader installations (entry/exit configurations),
individual reader radio frequency (RF) fields must be limited to
reduce interference between readers. Therefore, we
recommend that you maintain a minimum distance of 5 feet
(1.52m) x 1.3 feet (0.4m) between readers.
1. Mount the readers at the minimum distance shown in
Figure 5 below, using the installation instructions provided
in “To mou
nt the reader on a pedestal.”
2. Use one WIU-4 for each reader. Do not share one WIU-4
with two readers.

Reader wiring
The 1109 Reader is supplied with a fixed, 6-conductor pigtail.
The voltage specification for this reader is 10 to 16 VDC,
although 12 VDC or greater is recommended using a linear type
DC power supply for optimal performance.
Note: For multiple reader installations, each reader should be
wired individually back to a reader port on the controller. Do not
share one WIU-4 with multiple readers.
To wire the reader:
1. Use the cable connection table below to connect the pigtail
to the WIU-4. Match the pigtail colors to the WIU-4. Refer to
the Wiegand Interface Unit Four-State (WIU-4) Installation Manual for details.
2. Place the cover on the reader, and then secure it with the
three security screws provided.
3. Wire the WIU-4 to the controller. Refer to the Wiegand Interface Unit Four-State (WIU-4) Installation Manual for
details.
4. Provide a DC power source of 10 to16 VDC.

Troubleshooting
Incorrect badge number
If the badge number differs from what is read on other readers,
make sure that your communication protocol is configured
correctly. Refer to Table 1 on page 1.
e reader LED is flashing green when any badge is
Th
presented, whether it is a valid badge or not
This is normal behavior for the reader. The reader LED provides
visual feedback to the user that the badge was read. This is
accomplished by flashing the LED green.
The badge read LED sequence is as follows:
Valid badge: LED goes from red to solid green and remains
green for duration of door unlock.
Invalid badge: LED goes from red to flashing green, and then
solid red.
