RALLY TIMING CLOCK
RALLYTIME III is a third generation rally timing clock. RALLYTIME I was developed in 1984
and RALLYTIME II in 1989. These timing devices have been used in South African
Regional, National and International Rallies with great success and reliability. In 20 years the
Castrol International Rally and Total International Rally have used the equipment without a
single stage being cancelled due to timing clocks. The RALLYTIME II is also used in
Australia, Namibia and Central Africa for the Safari Rally. Weaknesses in the previous
generation were manual setting of the time, which relied on officials to set an accurate time to
begin with, and the absence of suitable timing beams that were economically viable and
could work in dust or rain.
RALLYTIME III is of an all new design using the most modern components, many from the
cellular phone industry, which has allowed us to overcome the few shortcomings noted
above, reduce the size and increase the capabilities.
Timing is now set using GPS (Global Positioning System). The built-in GPS integrated circuit
chip also has an accurate time output with hours, minutes and seconds as well as a
millisecond output which is used to generate an accurate one thousandths of a second
resolution display and record for a Special Stage Flying Finish.
Beams are now available with high power infrared, designed for car wash bays, which will
penetrate dust and rain. RALLYTIME III has been designed to operate with these beams for
accurate, high-resolution (0.001) Flying Finish times or with the Start Control clock to detect
and record jumped starts. The beams operate on 12V DC and can be supplied with a pair of
stands each containing a sealed battery, charger and removable pole for the beam
transmitter or receiver. The receiver can send the stop signal up to 400 meters by extension
cable to the Stop Control clock.
Countdown digital displays (59 ... 00 seconds to go) are available as an accessory and can
be driven from the RALLYTIME III connector. Start times can now be set to any time on the
second and not limited to the nearest minute. This will allow for the restart in time order o r
exact time starts for handicap races. The clock will also drive the existing countdown lights

(red-amber-green) and can also drive both types simultaneously. These ultrabright LED
displays and lights require a lot of power and must be used with an external 12V DC power
source as before. The clocks' internal battery is charged from this accessory when it is
connected. The countdown lights housing is weatherproof polycarbonate with red perspex
front and comes with a tripod mount and connector socket and cable. The tripod is also an
accessory.
Master clocks for documentation and regroup points are available as accessories and are
driven by the RALLYTIME III with GPS. These master clocks also require a 12V DC external
supply and will keep the RALLYTIME III charged whilst connected. The master clocks will
display HH:MM:SS and be accurate to one second.
RS-232 serial output on the clock can be set for driving a 2-digit countdown display (59 ... 00
seconds for Start Controls), a master clock (HH:MM:SS for Documentation), direct printout of
full times and car numbers, line-by-line printout as each car passes the control, or for
computer downloads. These are in three selectable formats including CSV for spreadsheets,
RALLYTIME III printout report and the backward compatible RALLYTIME II printout report.

GPS technology allows the control positions to be displayed to ensure their correct location.
The coordinates are also included in the printout reports. The GPS is also used to check that
the control has been closed off if the clock is moved.
Battery improvements include rechargeable NiMH with 'fuel gauge' components as used in
cell-phones. These control battery management and accurately display battery capacity on
the screen in %. When RALLYTIME III is used with beams or countdown lights those
devices require their own 12V DC supply. However, RALLYTIME III can be operated from it's
own supply when those accessories are not connected.
Graphic display with backlighting allows day and night use and better detail for text. All
instructions are by means of clear, simple to use prompts. The style is similar to previous
models and marshals will be able to convert to the new RALLYTIME III with ease.
Housings are rugged, dust proof and come with a rubber protection cover. For long life and
reliability they should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight and rain.
Accessories available are infra-red transmitter and receiver beams, mounting kits including
battery and charger for beams, stop push-buttons, countdown lights, countdown lamps,
tripods, extension cable reels, 12V cables with battery clamps, mains battery chargers and
carrying cases.
