Chapter 2 Hardware Installation
2.1 Before you begin
Please read this User guide carefully before installing and using the equipment. The operating distance range of your wireless connection can vary significantly depending on the physical position of the wireless devices. Factors that can weaken signals by getting in the way of your network’s radio waves are metal appliances or obstructions and walls. Typical ranges vary based on the types of materials and background RF (Radio Frequency) noise in your home or office.
For best performance of your wireless network, you are suggested to:
1. Avoid redundant obstacles and interference between the wireless devices.
2. Keep your AP away from appliances with a strong electric field or magnetic field, such as a microwave oven or refrigerator. Place the AP near the center of the area in which your wireless device operates.
2.2 Basic requirements

• Channel: the channel used by the wireless LAN. All devices in the same wireless LAN
should use a different channel. We advice a ratio of 5 points so you should use a combination of channel 1, 6 or 11. If you are not sure which channel is best to use, then keep the value of “auto”.
Use Wifi-Info-View to determine which channel is available for usage. You can download the free utility on the website:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_information_view.html
• Transmit power: the transmit power can be set to a bare minimum (1mW) or maximum
power (100mW) for better performance. (As from 2018 the maximum outlet level in Europe is set to 30 Mw)

• Band: you only are able to choose 2.4GHz (802g+n) band since it is a single-band
module according to the “N-standard”.
• HT Mode: allows you to specify whether the AP should transmit on 20MHz or 40MHz
bandwidth.
• Force 40MHz mode: for maximum speed you should enable this mode. Modern devices
all are compatible with this mode. However, if you do own an older device that does not function well, you should disable it to guarantee maximum device compatibility. Always use 20Mhz when you use multiple OptoXSTM Wifi units for an optimal channel array.
• Data rate: this is the rate this access point uses to transmit data packets. The access
point will use the highest possible selected transmission rate to transmit the data packets.
• Fragmentation threshold: this feature specifies the maximum size of a packet during the
fragmentation of data to be transmitted. If you set this value too low, it will result in bad performance.
• RTS threshold: when the packet size is smaller than the RTS threshold, the wireless
router will not use the RTS/CTS mechanism to send this packet.
• CTS protection: clear to send (CTS) protection mode is a wireless setting that ensures
clients on a network can connect to an AP when many communication devices are present.

• ESSID: this is the name of the wireless signal which is broadcasted. All the devices in the
same wireless LAN should have the same SSID.
• Mode: allows you to set the module in Access point Mode, client mode, etc. For un-
experienced users it is adviced to keep the module operating in Access point Mode.
• Hide ESSID: hides the network name (SSID) from being broadcasted publicly.
• WMM mode: this enables the Wifi multimedia network QoS feature. This prioritizes the
traffic of multimedia related data such as voice and video above other data/content on your network.

4.2 Security
This module provides complete wireless LAN security functions, included are WEP, IEEE
802.11x, and can prevent your wireless LAN from illegal access. Please make sure your wireless stations use the same security function and are setup with the same security key.
Figure 4.2.1
No encryption
When you choose to disable encryption, this will create an open network. It is commonly used in guest networks.
WEP
When you select a 64-bit or 128-bit WEP key, you have to enter WEP keys to encrypt data. You can generate the key by yourself and enter it. You can enter four WEP keys and select one of them as a default key. Then the router can receive any packets encrypted by one of the four keys.
• Input Type: you may select ASCII characters (alphanumeric format) or Hexadecimal
digits (in the "A-F", "a-f" and "0-9" range) to be the WEP Key.
• Key length: you can select the WEP key length for encryption, 64-bit or 128-bit. The
larger the key will be, the higher level of security is used, but the throughput will be lower.
• Key1 - Key4: the WEP keys are used to encrypt data transmitted in the wireless network.
Use the following rules to setup a WEP key on the device. 64-bit WEP: input 10-digits Hex values (in the "A-F", "a-f" and "0-9" range) or 5-digit ASCII character as the encryption keys. 128-bit WEP: input 26-digit Hex values (in the "A-F", "a-f" and "09" range) or 13-digit ASCII characters as the encryption keys.
• Click “Save & Apply” at the bottom of the screen to save the above configuration.

4.7 Virtual server
Use the Virtual Server function when you want different servers/clients in your LAN to handle different service/internet application type (e.g. email, FTP, webserver, etc.) from the internet. Computers use numbers called port numbers to recognize a particular service/internet application type. The Virtual Server allows you to re-direct a particular service port number (from the internet/WAN port) to a particular LAN private IP-address and it’s service port number.
• Enable Virtual Server: Enable Virtual Server.
• Local IP: this is the LAN client/host IP-address that the Public Port number packet will be
sent to.
• Local Port: this is the port number (of the above Private IP-host) that the below Public
Port number will be changed to when the packet enters your LAN (to the LAN Server/Client IP).
• Type: select the port number protocol type (TCP, UDP or both). If you are unsure, then
leave it to the default “Both” setting.
• Public Port: enter the service (service/internet application) port number from the internet
that will be re-directed to the above Private IP-address host in your LAN
• Comment: the description of this setting.
• Add: fill in the "Private IP", "Private Port", "Type", “Public Port” and "Comment" of the
setting to be added and then click the + sign. Then this Virtual Server setting will be added to the "Current Virtual Server Table" below.
• Reset: if you want to remove Virtual Server settings from the "Current Virtual Server
Table", select the Virtual Server settings you want to remove in the table and then click "Delete Selected". If you want to remove all Virtual Server settings from the table, just click the "Delete All" button. Click "Reset" will clear your current selections.
• Click “Save & Apply” at the bottom of the screen to save the above configuration.

Chapter 5 Virtual server
5.1 ALG
An application gateway is an application program that runs on the router. When a client program establishes a connection to a destination service, it connects to an application gateway or proxy. The client then negotiates with the proxy server in order to communicate with the destination service. In effect, the proxy establishes the connection with the destination behind the firewall and acts on behalf of the client, hiding and protecting individual computers on the network behind the firewall. This creates two connections: one between the client and the proxy server and one between the proxy server and the destination. Once connected, the proxy makes all packetforwarding decisions. Since all communication is conducted through the proxy server, computers behind the firewall are protected.

Chapter 7 Troubleshooting guide
Problem
What to do
The module does not fit into my power socket
• Check whether you do have the correct module in your
hand. EU-models should fit when you are living in The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and Italy. When you live in the UK, Eastern-Europe, Portugal and Scandinavian countries, you do need a different model. Contact your local dealer or reseller.
I do not have any earthed power sockets in my home
• The OptoXS
TM
Wifi module also can be plugged into an un-earthed power socket. Under normal and intended use the electrical safety is guaranteed.
I have plugged-in the module and connected my computer as a wireless client, but I have no internet connection.
• If the white-coloured LED of the module is NOT emitting,
then your wall-socket is not powered. Check your circuit breakers in your utility cabinet. In case of any doubt contact your local electrician.
• If the white coloured LED is constantly shining, you should
check wether you have plugged in the module in an OptoXSTM enabled power socket. To do that, you should unplug the module and - while keeping a minimum distance of 33 cm - look at the wall-outlet- you should see two tiny holes. From the right-handed one, a blinking redcoloured light is emitted. If any light is absent you should check if your OptoXSTM HUB/Switch is powered and is emitting blinking red-coloured signals.
• Rotate the module. You may have plugged-in the module
up-side down. Unplug the module and turn it around. The two tiny holes from the module should be oriented upwards.

Problem
What to do
I have plugged in my module in an optoXSTM enabled wallsocket, do have internet access but cannot login into it to change some settings.
• You need to ensure that your computer is in the same IP
SubnetMask to connect to the web-based utility. By default this is 255.255.255.0. In case of doubt you should check with your DSL/cable modem.
• Make sure you have an updated Java-enabled web
browser.
• You need the module’s IP-address for your browser. You
need to login into your DSL/cable modem for this. Go to page 16 of this manual.
• Disable any internet security software running on the
computer. Software firewalls such as Zone Alarm, Black Ice, Sygate, Norton Personal Firewall and Windows® may block access to the configuration pages. Check the help files included with your firewall software for more information on disabling or configuring it.
• Check the signal level. Move closer to the module to
improve the level or try with another OptoXSTM enabled wall socket.
• First of all you should keep the modules Wifi channel
selection to “Auto”, If that does not help, you should select a Wifi channel that shows less interference. For this you have to login into your module with a web browser. You need the module’s IP-address for this (see page 15).
• The module should not be obstructed by objects in its
immediate surrounding area.
I want to update/upgrade my module.
• You should NOT attempt to flash an OpenWRT firmware
that has not been officially released on Innovience International’s website. You may end-up with a bricked module that has become unusable.
• There is no need to upgrade the module’s firmware during
it’s lifetime.
I have several OptoXS
TM
Wifi modules in my home and I desire seemless roaming from one room to another.
• Roaming requires that you configure each module to
create a wireless network with the SAME SSID (“OptoXS
TM”
by default) AND login key (“00000000” by default). Also
you should use different channels in your network.

Problem
What to do
I did forget my password.
• The only option left is to reset your module to factory
default values. For this you should push the small reset button for at least 10 seconds. Small reset is 5 seconds. The module will restart itself. By default there is NO password to login into the module.
