2.4 Device Status Lights

The ICU device has three status LEDs and an illuminated Image Capture logo. From left to right the LEDs are: Amber, Green and Red. These LEDs report different statuses depending on the process that it is currently undertaking; see the below tables for further information.

2.4.1 Boot Up Sequence

Step
LED Status
Power-On Indication
Operating System Started
Age Verification Initialised
Boot-Up Completed
After the boot up sequence is completed the green LED on the ICU device will remain illuminated. When communications are received from the host machine the ICU logo will begin to flash to indicate receipt and response. The boot-up sequence typically takes around 1minute to complete.

2.4.2 Age Verification Sequence

After receipt of an enable command, see Section 5.1, the following process occurs:
Step
LED Status
Waiting for face
Face Detected
Age Verification Processing
Age Verification Completed &
waiting for next face.
The Age Verification sequence will be repeated while a face is detected in the image. Processing times will vary depending on processing options and configuration settings.

3 MACHINE INTEGRATION

3.1 Power Specification

The unit shall be supplied from a source specified as Electrical Energy Source Class 1 (ES1) to IEC/UL 62368-1, or specified as SELV according to IEC/UL 60950-1.
Voltage
12VDC (+/- 10%)
Current
1A

3.2 Connection Specification

The ICU device has two sockets on the back of the unit; a power connection socket and a communication socket. The location of these is shown in Section 2.2.
The drawing for the power cable is shown in Section 6.1.2.
The communication cable is a standard USB Type-A to Type-B Micro USB cable. This micro USB cable provides the physical link through which communications and video are transmitted. The maximum length of this data cable is 3 metres.

3.3 Screw Specification

The table below shows the screw specifications for the different screws on the ICU device. The bezel screws are provided with the unit as it is already attached, the other screws must be sourced separately.
Screw Position
Thread
Max Depth
Machine Mount Screw
M4
25mm
Bezel Screw
M4 (3mm Allen Key Head)
12mm
Camera Mount
Standard ¼” Tripod Mount
25mm

3.4 Bezel Mounting

It is possible to remove the front face of the ICU device to mount it inside a machine. This lets you secure the face of the unit to the outside of the machine, while mounting the ICU device behind it inside the machine:

Ensure that the cut-out area of the host machine is large enough so as not to cover the cameras. See Section 6.1.1 for measurement drawings. The minimum and maximum widths of the machine panel is shown in the diagram below (measurements in millimetres):

4 INSTALLATION AND USE

Choosing the optimum setup will generate the best results. Camera technology requires careful consideration of the lighting, including subject illumination and background lighting. The ICU implements automated exposure settings that help to reduce poor illumination conditions. However, despite this, the location of the ICU and the surrounding lighting is key to achieving the best accuracy. Consider the points below when deciding on the location of the installation:
Do:
Locate ICU device 60-80 cm from the subject’s face.
Place the ICU device so that the subject will look into the camera.
Ensure the subject’s face will have good illumination.
Avoid:
Poor illumination of the subject’s face.
Bright background lighting.
(these will severely affect the performance)

5 SOFTWARE INTEGRATION

The ICU operates as a UVC webcam device over USB, with age verification or estimation details using the SSP interface over the same USB connection.

5.1 SSP Communication Flow

On connecting the ICU to a PC, standard COM Port and UVC drivers will be enumerated. These are then used for interfacing with your application.
The flow chart below shows the basic command sequence when communicating via SSP. See SSP manual and the SSP Implementation guide for more information.
Ensures the communication packets are synchronized from this point.
Ensures the correct version of SSP is being used
Request information about the device setup/configuration
Allows the age verification process to take place on detected faces
Request info on detections or other events

Poll commands should be sent every 200ms. If the ICU does not receive poll command for 5 seconds, it will automatically revert to the disabled state. An Enable command (0x0A) must be sent to the ICU before any further processes will be performed.
The possible responses to the Poll command are outlined below, each response must be handled appropriately within the machine software:
Response
Hex Code
Description
Disabled
0xE8
Device is in a disabled state, send the Enable
command to use the device.
Process Event
0x11
If data byte is 0x01, device is initialising. Please
wait until this is no longer reported before
attempting to enable or modify the ICU.
Face Detected
0x14
Face detected in central camera’s field of view.
Age Detected
0x15
Depending on ICU settings (Age Verify or Age
Estimate) this will report either a Pass/Check or
the estimated age. See SSP Manual for further
explanation of the data bytes.
Error Event
0x16
An error occurred. Details are provided in the
data transmitted.
Data Processing
0x17
The ICU device is currently processing a result.
Slave Reset
0xF1
The ICU device has been powered up or power
cycled and has run through its reset process.
Further information regarding SSP is available in the following manuals:

5.2 UVC Webcam

USB Video Class (UVC) is a defined standard for USB video devices. To simplify development, the ICU falls into this family of devices.
The following indicates a typical UVC application interaction within an operating system (OS):
