1 Introduction
Dear user,
we would like to congratulate you on purchasing your new VarioCAM
®
HD thermography system.
Please carefully read this user manual before initial start-up. This is the only way to ensure that you are
able to fully take advantage of the performance capability of your thermography system. Please
particularly observe the notes on device safety in accordance with chapter 2 in order to avoid damages to
the thermography system.
All information provided within the framework of this user manual describe a completely equipped
VarioCAM
®
HD thermography system of the “research” series. Depending on the selected model and the
individual customisation, technical data, scope of functions and supplied accessories of your
thermography system may deviate from the version described herein. Equipment-dependent features are
identified accordingly by means of an * within this user manual.
As a matter of principle, the descriptions of the technical data and the specific scopes of functions and
delivery in the corresponding shipping documents are decisive (order confirmation/bill of delivery).
This product is subject to further developments within the meaning of technical progress.

The VarioCAM® HD is a state-of-the-art thermography system designed for precise, quick and noncontact measurement of the surface temperature of objects.
The VarioCAM
®
HD was designed for universal application and can be used both as a mobile and as a
stationary device for measuring and storing temperature values. The compact and resilient design and a
high degree of protection allow for industrial application even in unfavourable external conditions. The low
weight of the device as well as the long operating time of the rechargeable battery allow for efficient use
in this.
High measurement accuracy, precision optics with extraordinary image quality as well as the universal
interface concept for digital real-time thermography data collection using GigE-Vision* allow for using the
VarioCAM
®
HD in the most different fields of application.
The VarioCAM
®
HD is equipped with a digital color video camera in order to document the measuring
situation on photos. Infrared (IR) and visual (VIS) image, as well as frame rates can be saved to SD and
SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards. For the purposes of visualisation, the thermography system
is equipped with a swivel-mounted color TFT viewfinder* and a pivot- and swivel-mounted active colour
TFT display.
Diverse accessories and different software packages for preprocessing and further processing the
recordings turn VarioCAM
®
HD to a universal thermography system for a broad range of applications.
Typical fields of application of the thermography system are amongst other things:

General
The VarioCAM® HD is a high-quality, carefully calibrated optical measurement device. Please handle it
with the corresponding care. Avoid contaminations, particularly in the lens areas.
The device is equipped with degree of protection IP54.
Please observe the conditions for use, storage and transportation of the device mentioned within the
framework of the technical data (see chapter 3 Technical description – page 8).
Only use the supplied transport box in order to transport the VarioCAM
®
HD.
Only the manufacturer is allowed to open the camera housing. Any intervention performed by other
persons is inadmissible and will result in the forfeiture of any warranty claims.
Only use accessories or spare parts expressly recommended by the manufacturer regarding the
VarioCAM
®
HD. Otherwise, malfunctions or damages may occur. Any warranty claims are excluded for
such damages.

Handling
The VarioCAM® HD is equipped with a highly sensitive uncooled microbolometer detector. The object
radiations occurring in thermographic practice do not induce any changes to the detector. However,
overloads exceeding a black body radiation of 1,000°C in the measuring ranges 1 and 2*, as well as
2,000°C in measuring range 3* may result in irrevocable damages and thus, must be avoided.
The VarioCAM® HD must not be pointed directly into the sun or other high-radiation sources (e.g.
lasers) neither during operation nor when switched off, because this may result in irrevocable
changes to the microbolometer detector, the origins of which can be unambiguously demonstrated.
The manufacturer does not assume any warranty for damages caused this way.
For measurements in conjunction with CO2 lasers, the laser protection filters offered by InfraTec as
accessories should be use. Even when using other laser, the use of appropriate protective filter is
recommended to prevent damage from VarioCAM
®
HD. Please note that even a small - even diffuse reflection of laser radiation can cause damage to the detector. The manufacturer takes no
responsibility for damages caused in this way.
It is also absolutely necessary to prevent the sun or other high-energy radiation sources from
indirectly coming into the field of view of the VarioCAM® HD using reflecting surfaces!
When the VarioCAM
®
HD is not used, the supplied protective lens cap must be attached at all times.
Only use SD and/or SDHC memory cards in the SD drive of the VarioCAM
®
HD. Otherwise, damages to
the thermography camera or the memory card may occur, which no liability will be assumed for.
As a matter of principle, use the supplied battery charger in order to charge the supplied rechargeable
lithium-ion batteries. The battery charger is only suitable for indoor operation. In order to avoid the
risk of fire and/or electrical shocks, the battery charger must not be exposed to rain or moisture.
The lens should not be replaced in rooms with high amounts of dust or moisture, because the degree
of protection IP54 is not provided for when the lens is removed.
On the front of the device, the VarioCAM
®
HD is equipped with a laser range finder* (LRF) and/or laser
pointer* generating a visible laser beam. Avoid looking directly into the laser beam and do not point
the laser beam to other persons. This may damage their eyes.
When installing the thermography system to machines and systems in a stationary manner, it must be
ensured that the laser beam is not located at eye level.
The VarioCAM® HD is equipped with an LED light in order to illuminate the color camera’s image.
Avoid any direct eye contact and do not point the LED light to other persons. This may damage thei
r
eyes.

3 Technical description
3.1 Functional principle
The VarioCAM® HD is a thermography system designed for the long-wave infrared spectral range
(LWIR) of (7.5 ... 14) µm. The lens reproduces the object scene to a microbolometer array with
(1,024 x 768) and/or (640 x 480) pixels. The electrical signal of the detector array is processed further by
the internal electronics. In this, the electronics comprises all functions required for camera operation, such
as actuation of the microbolometer array, A/D conversion, offset and gain correction, pixel correction as
well as actuation of the different interfaces.
Operation is optionally performed directly using the integrated keyboard (joystick, focus rocker switch,
function buttons) or using optional interfaces. RS232*, Ethernet* (GigE Vision)*, WLAN (IEEE802.11
a/b/g)*, Bluetooth 2.1/3.0 (IEEE802.15.1 class2)* or USB2.0* are available as interfaces. Specific
software packages are required in order to use these interfaces present depending on the equipment.
3.2 Description of the functional units
Lens
The camera lens collects the IR radiation in the field of view emitted by the measuring object and
reproduces this IR radiation on the detector array. Field of view (FOV, Field of View) and
resolution/measuring spot size (IFOV, Instantaneous Field of View) are determined at the same distance
to the focal distance f of the used lens.

Detector
The VarioCAM® HD is equipped with an uncooled microbolometer FPA detector (uncooled Focal Plane
Array) with a resolution of (1.024 x 768) or (640 x 480) IR pixels. The individual elements of the detector
are microscopically small thin-film resistors on extremely thin diaphragms arranged a few micrometers
above the silicon read-out circuit in an unsupported manner. The lens of the thermography system
reproduces the thermal radiation from the scene onto these detector elements and these detector
elements absorb this radiation. The temperature change of the detector elements resulting thereof results
in signals that can be analysed electronically, read-out line-by-line and column-by-column using a readout circuit.
The use of an uncooled detector ensures the quick availability of the camera function upon start-up
(starting time < 30 seconds) and a long mean time to failure (MTTF) in continuous operation.
Detector electronics
The detector electronics supplies the BIAS voltages and further actuation signals required for detector
operation and ensures that the analogue output signal of the detector is pre-processed and digitalised.
Image processing electronics
With the help of an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and up to two* processors, real-time image
processing with the following essential functions (depending on the equipment) is implemented:

Optomechanics
With the help of an optomechanic assembly, the following functions are implemented:
■ Focus (motor focus)
■ Measuring range switch-over (apertures)*
■ Internal NUC (Non-Uniformity Correction) with shutter
Furthermore, this assembly optionally comprises a module for hardware-based increase of the geometric
resolution of the thermography system to (2.048 x 1.536) IR pixels (detector with [1.024 x 768] pixels) and
(1.280 x 960) IR pixels (detector with [640 x 480] pixels) in “Resolution Enhancement”* mode.
Controls
The VarioCAM® HD is controlled by means of a focus rocker switch with center function for
autofocus. the function buttons Automatic. Temperature, Start/Stop/Save, and the multi-function
buttons and at the right top. On the backside of the camera, a power button for right-thumb
operation, a joystick with center function (Enter), and the button (Cancel) can be found. The
controls of the VarioCAM
®
HD are arranged for single-hand operation with the right hand. Another multi-
function button can be found at the top of the handle*. When carrying the camera on its handle, it can
be operated using the thumb of your right hand.
Specific modes of camera operation and presettings can be configured using menus. Chapter 8
Operation – page 26 contains a detailed description of how to operate the thermography system as well
as a detailed description of the menu structure.
The VarioCAM
®
HD can be controlled remotely via the RS232, GigE-Vision, Bluetooth or WLAN
interfaces*. The related control software is described in separate manuals of the corresponding software*.
Power supply
Optionally,
■ an external 15 V wall plug transformer (accessories)* or
■ a rechargeable lithium-ion battery 7.2 V (accessories)
can be used to supply the VarioCAM
®
HD with power.
The wall plug transformer is connected to the 14-pin (right-hand side) LEMO socket on the backside of
the housing. The rechargeable battery is inserted vertically into the designated position on the backside of
the thermography system (see chapter 6.2 Start – page 16).

Interfaces
The thermography system is equipped with the following interfaces:
■ Drive for SD/SDHC card (behind the cover on the left side of the camera. unfold the display)
■ RS232* (LEMO 14-pin)
■ DVI-D (HDMI socket) behind the cover on the backside of the camera, composite video
(LEMO 14-pin)
■ 2 x digital E/A for external trigger input/trigger output* (TTL level, LEMO 14-pin)
■ 2 x analogueue output* 0-5V (LEMO 14-pin)
■ GigE-Vision* (LEMO 8-pin)
■ USB2.0* (mini-AB, behind the cover on the backside of the camera)
■ WLAN* (external antenna*)
■ Bluetooth* (external antenna*)
Simultaneously using several interfaces on the 14-pin LEMO socket is allowed for by means of a
breakout box*. In this case, the breakout box* is also used for external power supply.
As an alternative to the digital high-resolution DVI-D image data on the HDMI socket, the analogue image
data (4:3 PAL/NTSC) is available as FBAS signal (composite) on the 14-pin LEMO socket. The HDMI
socket can be used to connect screens processing a resolution of (1.280 x 768) or (1.280 x 800) in
accordance with the VESA standard.
In connection with the software packages IRBIS
®
3 remote* and IRBIS® 3 online*, the GigE-Vision
interface* allows for remotely controlling the thermography system, as well as for transmitting digital
image information to a PC in real time*.

6.2 Start
■ Provide for power supply by inserting the charged rechargeable lithium-ion battery or by connecting
the wall plug transformer* to the VarioCAM
®
HD (plug the 14-pin connector into the right LEMO
socket with the red dot pointing to the top).
■ Remove the cover of the SD-card slot, insert the SD-card into the card slot, and re-attach the cover.
■ Remove the protective cap from the lens.
■ Push the Power button . The camera is switched on and the Jenoptik logo is displayed during the
process of booting. Upon system initialisation, the power-on LED initially flashing green and then
illuminated permanently in green indicates that the VarioCAM
®
HD is ready-to-operate in Live mode.

■ Initially, you must select a motif with a contrasty scene (e.g. an active electrical device) and point the
VarioCAM
®
HD towards this scene.
■ When using the viewfinder*, fold the display to the side of the camera. The viewfinder is switched on
by doing so. You must initially adapt the viewfinder to your eye using the diopter compensation. For
this, the eyecup on the viewfinder is rotated. In order to find the ideal setting, you can use the
sharpness of the letters initially.

6.4 Setting the focus
■ Push the focus rocker switch: middle button for autofocus or to the left or to the right in order
to set the focus for longer or shorter distances to the measuring object. If the autofocus function is
used, a rectangle will be displayed in the center of the screen. The distance setting is optimised
taking the distance of the objects contained in the rectangle.

6.5 Setting the temperature range
■ Push the button (shortly). The thermography system will automatically set a temperature scale of
the false colour image corresponding to the current scene:

■ The required temperature scale can also be set by means of joystick . For this, please select the

■ Depending on the selected input variant, the joystick can be used in order to set the temperature
level and the temperature range (Level/Range) or the upper and lower limits (Max/Min) and the
values can be input numerically as well. In this, the respective joystick and button functions are
displayed to the left of the thermal image. The respective input dialog for numerical input is displayed
in the center of the field of view:

If the options Level/Range and Maximum/Minimum are set manually, the temperature scale can be
adapted automatically once by shortly pushing the Enter button. If the Enter button is pushed
longer, the scale is permanently adapted automatically. The AUTO mode will then be displayed by
on the right side of the image above the color palette. The AUTO mode is terminated by any manual
setting of Level/Range/Max/Min.
6.6 Saving images
In order to save the thermal image, the button is required. The following variants are possible:
6.6.1 Saving with "check"
■ Push the button halfway down the live image will be frozen: .
■ The frozen image can initially be “checked” on the display or viewfinder.
■ If the image is not to be saved, push the button: .
■ Push the button completely the image is saved.
The process of writing the data is indicated by the changing color of the map symbol (in the line below
the image, right-hand side): . Upon saving, the camera control automatically activates the Live
mode: .

6.6.2 Quick saving
■ Immediately push the button completely image is saved immediately: , the camera
control then automatically re-activates the Live mode: .
Alternatively, you can save by using the multifunction button
(see chapter 9.4.5 Menu item "Buttons"
Abschnitt 9.4.5 – page 72).
6.7 Menu functions
■ The VarioCAM® HD offers a large number of analysis and automatic functions and can be configured
individually for the respective use case. The settings and functions are selected in the camera menu,
which is arranged at the left-hand side of the image area.

■ Use the joystick
(, , , ) to navigate the menu and select the functions using the Enter
button.
■ The 4 main menus can be selected by means of tabs located on the upper margin of the menu and
identified with the corresponding symbols:
“Image” “File” “Measure” “Settings”
■ Sub-menus can be opened by using the button (Enter) on the respective menu item, e.g. push the
button in order to open the sub-menu for manually setting the temperature range.
■ Settings made can be accepted using the buttons Enter
or or discarded using the button.
6.8 Shutdown and Standby
■ Using the Power button , the shutdown dialog is opened, whereupon (Enter) can be used to
confirm the selection.

If the (mobile) operation of the VarioCAM
®
HD needs to be paused, it can be put into standby mode in
order to reduce the power consumption. The standby mode can be chosen in the shutdown dialogue and

is indicated by the shortly flashing status LED. Pressing the power button will bring the camera back
from standby mode to operational mode.
6.9 Data transmission to the computer
■ In order to transmit the data via the optional GigE-Vision interface using the software, the
thermography software IRBIS
®
3 remote or IRBIS® 3, supplied depending on the equipment, must
initially be installed in accordance with the description in the respective manual.
■ Another data transmission method is to read out the SDHC-card by means of a card reader.
■ Optionally, files found on the SDHC card can be read through the USB port*.
6.10 Analysis using the analysis software IRBIS® 3
■ Install the analysis software IRBIS® 3 on the computer and execute the software.
■ In order to open a thermography image (*.irb files) in the current window, the "Open file" function is
executed in the "File" menu.
■ The desired palette of colours (on the right-hand side of the thermography image) is selected by
using the drop-down field on the right top of the temperature scale.
■ The "View" menu can be used in order to display further elements in addition to the thermography
image, e.g. comment field, parameters and VIS image.
■ The desired temperature scale can be set by using the sliders for upper and lower limits on the right-
hand side of the colour palette or by inputting the values numerically. Pushing the right mouse button
between the temperature scale sliders will open the "Level + Range" dialog, where temperature level
and temperature range can be set. This setting is also accepted for the following thermography
images.
■ The "Measure" menu can be used in order to set labels and measuring and correction areas, as well
as to activate the indication of maximum and minimum temperature values.
■ In order to insert the analysed thermography images into a report, please use the functions contained
in the "Report" menu.

7 Start-up
7.1 Adaptation of the shoulder belt
The shoulder belt must be attached as follows:
■ Push the belt of the carrying strap from the top approx.. 10 cm through the loop to be found on the
backside of the camera.
■ Route the loose end of the strap through the bottom sleeve and then firmly push the sleeve towards
the loop on the backside of the camera.
■ Loosen the longer end of the strap in the buckle.
■ Then, also route the short end of the belt through the buckle and pull the strap tight so that only one
belt loop is visible.
■ Now, also pull the long, upper end of the strap tightly through the buckle so that no belt loop is visible.
The loose end of the carrying strap should always protrude freely from the buckle by ≥ 5cm!
7.2 Adaptation of the hand strap
The VarioCAM® HD is designed as highly portable system for single-hand operation. Initially, adjust the
hand strap attached to the handle piece as required. For this, open the loop of the hand strap and adjust
the length of the belt strap in such a way that you can comfortably access the controls with your fingers.
Then, close the hook and loop fastener of the loop,
7.3 Using a tripod*
The thermography camera is equipped with a 1/4" photo thread (DIN 4503) on the bottom of the housing.
In order to achieve rigid camera images. particularly for the Resolution Enhancement (RE) mode. it is
recommendable to fix the VarioCAM
®
HD to a tripod*.
Please observe the maximum penetration depth of the photo thread of 4.5 mm (DIN 4503).
7.4 Connecting a power supply
When using a rechargeable battery, the battery must be placed on the adapter plate. Push down the
rechargeable battery until it engages. In this, the rechargeable battery must be pushed slightly to the front
towards the lens. In order to use the VarioCAM
®
HD, please only use the genuine SONY® rechargeable
batteries NP-QM91D.
The wall plug transformer* is connected to the 14-pin socket on the right-hand side of the backside of the
thermography system.

7.5 Inserting a memory card
The SD-card slot is located on the left-hand side of the camera. In order to guarantee the degree of
protection
IP54, the slot is protected by a cover
. Pull off the cover to insert a memory card and insert the
SD-card into the card slot. Please observe the proper orientation of the card (▲ to the top). Afterwards,
the cover must be re-closed. This is the only way to ensure the complete degree of protection of the
device.
7.6 Replacing the lens
Only replace the lenses in dry and low-dust conditions. When the lens is removed, the degree of
protection
IP54
of the system is no longer guaranteed!
Position the VarioCAM
®
HD on a solid, level underground so that the lens is directed towards you. Rotate
the lens on the thermography system counterclockwise as far as it will go and/or until the two red dots are
aligned. Then, remove the lens to the front.
In order to attach the lens, the red marking spots on lens and camera must be aligned. In this position,
the lens must be pressed slightly against the camera corpus and turned clockwise until the red dot of the
lens is aligned with the white dot of the camera.
7.7 Operation using the gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interface*
Please proceed as follows in order to connect the VarioCAM® HD to a PC/notebook. The accessories
described are contained in the scope of delivery as an option*.
■ The Ethernet cable is used in order to establish a connection to the Ethernet interface of the PC
(RJ45 connector).
■ The 8-pin LEMO connector (blue mark) is connected to the left 8-pin LEMO socket (Fig. 18, blue
mark) on the camera.
Please make sure to establish the connection to the proper LEMO socket! Plug the LEMO connector
into the socket with the red dot directed to the top. Do not force the connector in!

The Ethernet cable is used in order to connect the
thermography camera to the 8-pin LEMO socket (left-hand
side, blue mark).
The 14-pin connector of the wall plug transformer is
plugged into the right-hand side LEMO socket with the red

Connecting the wall plug transformer*
If the VarioCAM
®
HD is to be operated (permanently)
connected to a notebook or PC, the power should be
supplied using the wall plug transformer (14-pin LEMO
connector on right-hand side socket).

When the wall plug transformer is connected, the camera is automatically supplied by the wall plug
transformer and no longer by the rechargeable battery. However, the rechargeable battery is not charged
at the same time.
Please find information on how to further proceed regarding the installation of the Ethernet driver for
the VarioCAM® HD in chapter 10 Software installation starting on page 83.
7.8 Operation using breakout box (connection via RS232)*
Using the breakout box will expand the connection options of the VarioCAM® HD. The interfaces 2 x
analogue output, 2 x trigger E/A, PAL/NTSC-FBAS, as well as the digital RS232 interface are accessible
via the breakout box.
Please follow the specified steps on how to establish the required connections.
1. Initially, the connection between thermography camera and breakout box must be established. For
this, the 14-pin connecting cable of the breakout box must be used. It is connected to the right-hand
side 14-pin LEMO socket on the backside of the VarioCAM
®
HD.
2. Then, the breakout box must be connected to the COM interface of the host computer. For this,
please use a commercially available cable.
3. Now, the supplied wall plug transformer is connected to the breakout box.
Only now you must push the Power button on the backside of the camera, which switches on the
thermography system.

7.9 Trigger functionality VarioCAM® HD*
7.9.1 Trigger function
Triggering uses the Ethernet to affect the 16 bit IRB data transmission. The TTL/CMOS signal is
forwarded to the VarioCAM
®
HD (right-hand side socket) using the BNC sockets marked T1 and T2 of the
breakout box and from there using the connecting cable with 14-pin LEMO connector. In order to connect
the trigger signal sources to the breakout box, commercially available BNC cables may be used.

■ T1 Trigger channel 1 is used by the IRBIS® 3 software.
■ T2 Trigger channel 2 is reserved for the SDK and further specific applications.
The voltage level of the trigger signals from the VarioCAM
®
HD to the input and the output is 5V TTL/CMOS.
The VarioCAM
®
HD reacts to a low-high trigger edge. The trigger event causes simultaneous marking in
the heater of the following frame (IR image). Within the IRBIS
®
3 software, this mark is analysed by the
IRBGRAB.DLL implemented there and results in the corresponding data being saved. The minimum
width of a trigger pulse should be 10 µs in order to allow an unambiguous assignment to the current
frame.
Depending on the event, signals can be generated via T1 and T2 using the alarm functionality. The
appropriate setting for this is described in section 9.4.6 Menu item "Alarm", page 73.
7.9.2 SyncOut
The frame rate of the VarioCAM® HD cannot be controlled from the outside. In order to synchronise other
cameras and processes, and for active thermography applications. the Framesync signal of the
VarioCAM
®
HD can be generated, however, The generation of the Framesync signal is activated by the
corresponding software command, In the event of a low-high edge, the Framesync signal starts
simultaneously with the recording of the first image line. The synchronisation pulse has a length of
approx. 600 µs.
The trigger channels are configured using the application software IRBIS
®
3 online.

when saving images is defined in the "Image" menu (see chapter
9.2.7 Menu item "Saving format" – page 55).
Furthermore, the save button
can be used in order to immediately accept inputs in many menus. This
function shortens the navigation and is activated ex factory, but can also be deactivated (see chapter
9.4.8 Menu item "System" – page 75).
The multi-function joystick can be used to navigate and to select functions, to input using the arrow
buttons , , , , as well as the function (Enter, push the center).
The focus rocker switch can be used in order to

The Power button is used to switch on the VarioCAM

HD. Initially, the status LED on the left-hand

the camera display. Upon successful system initialisation, the status LED will be illuminated permanently
green: the VarioCAM

HD is now ready to operate. The system start takes approx. 30 seconds.

In addition to the current temperature scene in false colour representation, different image elements are
used in order to show information about the camera status and regarding operation. The displayed image
elements can be changed and adapted in accordance with the individual requirements in the “Image”
menu using the menu item “Elements”, see chapter 9.1 Menu "Image" – page 36.
Along with the (normally always displayed) main image elements, further system messages are displayed
depending on the current function, providing information about the system status and intended to facilitate
operation, e. g. autofocus, temperature indicators for isotherms, temperature alarm indicators, messages
regarding critical status of the rechargeable battery. “Please wait…”, etc.

The VarioCAM
®
HD can be operated both by the control directly attached to the camera and, depending
on the equipment, remotely using GigE, RS232, or WLAN*.
8.2.2 Setting the temperature scale
Upon activation (pushing the power button ) and system start, the camera is in Live mode. This mode
is shown on the right-hand side at the top of the screen: . In Live mode, the current scene is shown
as a false colour representation of the temperature distribution (IR image), as a video image (visible, VIS),
or as a superimposition of IR and VIS (Merge). The temperature scale of the false colour representation
of the IR image can be set automatically or manually.
In order to automatically adapt the temperature scale to the current scene, push the button (factory
setting for button): the scale is set in accordance with the highest (= upper limit) and lowest
temperature (= lower limit) of the current scene. If the temperature scale was adapted before the focus
was changed, the temperature should be re-adapted afterwards.

Please observe the calibration range limit of the currently used measuring range. If the temperature of the
current scene is outside of the set range, an appropriate calibration range must be selected (see chapter
9.4.1 Menu item "Calibration" – page 68).
The manual setting options regarding the ideal adjustment of the temperature scale are described in
detail in chapter 9.1.1 Menu item "Manual" – starting on page 36.
8.2.3 Focus
Carefully setting the focus is particularly important in order to achieve a precise temperature
measurement of the thermography system.
8.2.3.1 Manual and automatic focus (without laser range finder)
The focus rocker switch can be used in order to
■ Manually focus by
■ Pushing the left side of the focus rocker switch in order to change the focus to longer distances
and/or
■ Pushing the right side of the focus rocker switch in order to change the focus to shorter
distances.
■ You can also set the focus automatically by pushing the center function of the focus rocker
switch.
In order to provide support during manual focusing for small objects to be measured, the zoom
setting can be used.
8.2.3.2 Automatic focus with laser range finder*
An automatic focus mode with an equipped laser range finder (depending on the design) is optionally
selectable. Please select the function LRF- AF from the menu Measurement for this purpose.

8.2.3.3 Permanent automatic focus with laser range finder*
With an integrated laser range finder, focusing can be set up to operate permanent automatically for
changing distances of the measurement objects. The laser range finder will be constantly repeated and in
case of any distance changes, the focus set up will be adjusted accordingly. In order to activate the laser
range finder function with a permanent supported autofocus LRF – PAF, select the menu Measurement:

The use of the function permanent laser range finder supported autofocus is limited to a distance of
approximately 2 to maximum 70 meters. The readjustment speed depends on the distance of the object,
the surface properties, and the lens used.
8.2.3.4 Focus setting of digital images (VIS focus)
A focus setting for the sharp display of video images (VIS channel) is only required for short-range
distances (< approx. 50 cm). Therefore, configure the required settings in the menu Settings – Screen
Mode – Digital Image as follows:

8.2.4 Spot editor
By pushing the button, a temperature measuring point is created in the center of the image. Pushing
the button with the spot switched on will switch off the measuring point.
The spot editor can be started by pushing the button for a long period of time. The editor can be used
to define measuring objects with different shapes and properties (Regions of Interest, ROIs), as well as to
set the way the measuring objects are displayed. After having defined the ROIs, these regions and their
measured values can be activated and deactivated using the
button. The particular description of the
spot editor’s function can be found in chapter 9.3 Menu "Measure" starting on page 56.
8.2.5 Saving
Thermography images and photographic pictures are saved to the SC-card inserted into the camera. The
VarioCAM
®
HD supports commercially available SD- and/or SDHC-cards up to a capacity of 32 GB.
Depending on the detector format and the set memory format, up to 25.000 thermograms can be saved to
one SDHC-card this way. Along with individual thermograms, thermal image sequences can be saved as
digital raw data and video sequences. The particular description of the camera settings for data storage
can be found in chapter 9.2.7 Menu item "Saving format" – page 55.
Depending on the equipment, the thermography and video data can be transmitted using the optional
interfaces GigE*. USB* and WLAN* so that transmitted data can also be stored on the used control units.
Before saving to SC-card, please initially check in each case whether the SD-card inserted into the
camera has sufficient memory space available. The remaining memory space can be displayed in menu
"Settings" "System" "Info" (see chapter 9.4 Menu item "Settings" – page 68). A writable memory
card is indicated by means of a blue card symbol in the lower right area of the field of view. A nonwritable or read-only memory card is indicated by means of a grayed-out card
symbol .

Depending on the equipment, the VarioCAM® HD can be used to store further data (photo, voice
comment, screenshot, ROI positions), along with the thermogram. This can be selected in the "File" menu
using the "Saving format" menu item (see chapter 9.2.7 Menu item "Saving format" – page 55).

8.2.5.1 Saving with check
In case you want to check the image to be recorded before saving it, the Live mode should be stopped
initially for this:
■ Push the button halfway down the live image will be frozen:

image can be displayed every time you save. For IR-images and for that selected, VIS will be displayed
for about 3 seconds in the lower left corner of the image simultaneously with the file name in the status
bar.

Within the menus, the joystick is used to navigate to the top ↑ and/or to be bottom ↓. The main menus
can be switched using the buttons ← and →. Depending on the settings for “Menu control” made in the
"Settings" menu in the "System" menu item at the "Menu control") function (see chapter 9.4.8 Menu item
"System" – page 75), the lower menu in each case can be accessed directly by pushing ↑ from the very
top and/or the upper menu in each case can be accessed directly by pushing ↓ from the very bottom
and/or "Image" can be selected directly by → from "Settings" and/or vice versa by ←.
Sub-menus can be opened by pushing the Enter button

9.1 Menu "Image"
Fig. 39 shows the "Image" menu. This menu constitutes a summary of the settings relevant for the
representation of the thermal image.

9.1.1 Menu item "Manual"
The option of manually setting the temperature scale is a central function of each thermography camera.
Therefore, this function is arranged in a quickly accessible menu in the left top area of the main menu of
the VarioCAM
®
HD. Setting the temperature scale allows for a visual allocation of temperatures to the
displayed scene by means of the false color representation of the thermal image. Maximum and minimum
values of the currently set temperature range are indicated by the corresponding figures above and below
the arranged colour palette.

Depending on the selected input variant, the joystick can be used in order to set the temperature level
and the temperature range (Level/Range) or the upper and lower limits (Max/Min) and the values can be
input numerically as well. In this, the respective joystick and button functions are displayed to the left of
the thermal image instead of the menu after opening the function. The respective input dialog for
numerical input is displayed in the center of the field of view:

Along with the option of manually setting the temperature scale, the temperature scale can be set once
by pushing the Enter button
shortly or permanently automatically by pushing the Enter button
longer. The permanent automatic adaptation of the temperature range called Autoimage is indicated by
in the right top corner of the screen. The Autoimage mode is deactivated by any manual change to
the temperature scale or non-recurrent triggering of the Autoimage function.
The setting menus Level/Range and Maximum/Minimum can be accessed directly by the button
functions Long and Long, as set ex factory.
9.1.2 Menu item "Mode"
In Live mode, the VarioCAM® HD displays thermal images (Infrared images), video images (Digital
images), or the superimposition of both (Merge). The options can be selected in the "Mode" menu, which
must be dropped down for this. If an Infrared image is currently displayed, you can switch to Digital
image or Merge; from the Digital image mode you can switch to Infrared image or Merge; and from the
Merge mode you can switch to Infrared image or Digital image. The different representation variants in
the Merge mode can be set after the sub-menu dropped down.

In the Infrared image mode, the thermal image is shown in false colour representation. Depending on the
equipment, the live image displays (1.024 x 768) or (640 x 480) IR pixels with the digital zoom switched
off. While saving, the geometric resolution can be increased to (2.048 x 1.536) and/or (1.280 x 960) IR
pixels by means of the optomechanic MicroScan functions Resolution Enhancement* (RE) or Dynamic
Resolution Enhancement* (DRE). These modes* must be activated in the "Settings menu" using the
"Extras" menu item.
Digital image mode
In the Digital image mode, the camera-internal digital photo channel is operated in video mode and
displayed with a geometric resolution of (1.024 x 720) pixels. The option of saving photos with the
available pixel resolution of (3.264 x 2.448) pixels (8 megapixels) is set in the "File" menu using the menu
item "Saving format", see chapter 9.2.7 Menu item "Saving format" – page 55.
Merge mode
In the Merge mode, 4 different modes can be selected. In order to select these options, the Merge submenu must be dropped down:

Merge – Picture in Picture
In the Picture in Picture mode, a part of the infrared image is superimposed over the digital image,
regardless of the temperature of the current scene. The size and the position of the displayed infrared
section can be changed by using the joystick : higher using ↑, lower using ↓, wider using → and
narrower using ←. The Enter button
can be used to toggle between the options Resize and Move.
The merged image section can be moved to the top ↑, to the bottom ↓, to the right → and to the left ←.

In the Picture in Picture Merge mode, all temperatures of the current scene are displayed in the selected
partial area in accordance with the set temperature scale. Therefore, cross-fading refers to the surface
area. In the Interval, Above and Below Merge modes, the displayed temperature range can be
restricted: cross-fading depends on the temperature in the entire infrared image.
Merge – Interval
In the Interval Merge mode, a (partial) temperature interval is defined within the set temperature range.
Partial areas, the temperatures of which are within this interval, are displayed as an infrared image in
false color representation; partial areas, the temperatures of which are outside of this interval, are
displayed as a digital image (VIS):

Upper and lower limits of the superimposed temperature range are displayed to the left of the palette on
top and at the bottom and can be changed by using the joystick : using ↑, the temperature level of the
Merge interval is increased, using ↓, the temperature level of the Merge interval is decreased, using →,
the temperature interval is increased, and using ← the temperature interval is decreased.

Merge – Above, Merge – Below
Just as in Interval, a (partial) temperature interval is defined in the Above and Below Merge modes, not
only the upper and/or lower limits are defined for the partial areas at this point. For the Above option, all
areas above, and for the Below option, all areas below the adjustable temperature limit are displayed.
The upper limit for the Above option corresponds to the upper limit of the set total range; the lower limit
for the Below option corresponds to the lower limit of the total range:

Cross-fading
In all Merge modes, the transparency of the cross-faded area can be selected. The degree of crossfading (α blending) can be set in the sub menu "Blending" in an infinitely variable manner.

9.1.3 Menu item "Zoom"
Depending on the equipment, the VarioCAM® HD supports digital magnification of the Infrared image and
the Digital image (VIS image) up to 32-fold*. The setting is made in the Fig Setting Fig menu using the
"Zoom " menu item and is applicable to the currently displayed image in each case (Infrared image or VIS
image). A set magnification is indicated as the corresponding status symbol to the right below the
image. If the image was enlarged digitally, the enlarged section of the image (initially located in the center
of the image) can be moved. By shortly pushing the Enter button , you can toggle between the
options enlargement (Zoom) and Move. The function active in each case is indicated by blackened
joystick symbols in the upper part of the menu; the zoom level and the position of the enlarged section of
the image are indicated in the left bottom area of the total image. After the enlarged section of the image
has been moved from the center of the image, the Enter button must be pushed longer in order to
center the section of the image.

when saving digital raw data in the IRB format,
9.1.4 Menu item "Palette"
The current allocation of the individual colors/shades of gray of the false color representation to the
corresponding temperatures is performed by using the palette shown on the right-hand side margin of the
screen ("colour scale", see Fig. 24 Arrangement of the image elements – page 28). In this, the maximum
value of the image area above and its minimum value below the palette serve the purpose of orientation
regarding the temperature level.
The Image
Palette (Palette) menu item is used in order to open a dialogue for selecting and setting
predefined palettes:

The "Inverse" function can be used in order to invert the current palette. For example, if the black/white
palette is set, the low temperatures are indicated in darker colorus when compared to the higher
temperatures by default. If the "Inverse" function is activated for the black/white palette, the
representation is inverted: The low temperatures are now indicated in lighter colours and the higher
temperatures are now indicated in darker colours (see also Fig. 67).
The "16 steps" function can be used to set the representation of the palette from 256 colour steps to 16
steps. Accordingly, only 16 temperature levels can be indicated instead of 256, which is why
differentiations exceeding the 16 steps are no longer displayed on the screen. Therefore, the scene is
“summarised” to 16 “classes” of the same temperature levels (see also Fig. 68).
The "Logarithmic" function can be used to toggle the representation of the temperature values between
a linear and a logarithmic curve. By default, a linear curve is selected in order to represent the
temperatures. By activating this function, it is possible to use a more differentiated resolution for the low
temperature range when compared to the high temperature range:

The effects of the logarithmic representation are illustrated by Fig. 69.
Whether the functions "Inverse", "16 steps" or "Logarithmic" are activated is indicated by a checkmark
on the respective menu item. It is also possible to combine the three variants with each other.
9.1.5 Menu item "Elements"
The "Elements" menu item can be used in order to individually adapt the user interface by selecting the
individual image elements. The menu comprises the two sub-menus "Elements" and "Hide". The
"Elements" sub-menu can be used to open the "Image elements" dialogue (see also Fig. 71) in order to
individually select the image elements. The selection is made by setting the corresponding checkmark
using the Enter button of the joystick ; the dialog can also be navigated with the joystick . When
selecting the "Hide" menu item, all image elements of the graphical user interface are hidden at once. If
this function is activated, a checkmark will be shown on the right side of the "Hide" menu item.

9.1.6 Menu item "Isotherms"
In the "Image" menu using the menu item "Isotherms" (see Fig. 72), the isotherms editor can be started
and/or settings regarding already created isotherms can be made, or all isotherms can be shown or
hidden simultaneously. The “Isotherms” function is used to show all image areas characterised by the
same temperature (in a defined temperature interval) with the same representation color and/or shade of
gray. With the help of the isotherms editor, it is possible to create isotherms for differently sized
temperature intervals. The temperature ranges are identified with different colours. The VarioCAM
®
HD
supports a maximum of 9 different isotherms*.

Along with the definition of
Intervals
for isotherms, identifying temperatures over or under a certain limit is
possible. At this point, temperatures above ("Above") and/or below ("Below") the limit value are
identified with the same colour. In order to define the isotherms “Above“, and/or “Below“, entering a limit
value is required in each case, while two temperatures must be defined for “Interval“. The temperature
limits are set using the joystick and the setting is indicated in the selected mode to the left of the image
(see Fig. 73 to Fig. 75).
Along with making the settings using the joystick, the limit values for each isotherm can be specified
numerically in a dialogue. To do so, open the isotherms editor by pressing T.

In this dialogue, changing the colour of the isotherm is also possible. The 15 “special colours” designed
for the isotherms were selected in such a way that they can still be conceived as isotherm even when
using a colour palette. Regardless of the aforementioned and for the purposes of unambiguous allocation
of the temperatures when using colour isotherms, it is recommendable to use a black/white palette and/or
to use a colour palette in the event of black, white, or grey isotherms. Single isotherms can be hidden by
placing/removing the respective checkmark in the isotherms editor. The limit and colour settings will be
applied when quitting the isotherms editor and saved when hiding an isotherm. The isotherms settings will
be lost when deleting an isotherm by pressing 2 or when shutting down the camera. If the same
isotherms settings need to be used again later, you can save the configuration (9.4.7 Menu item
"Configuration" – page 74).

9.1.7 Menu item "Filter"

With the help of the "Filter" menu item, a filter can be set for the representation of the thermal images. A
first-order digital low-pass filter is used as a filter.
The sub-menu can be used in order to select from the four filter stages "Off", "Weak", "Medium" and
"Strong". Filtering reduces the noise in the image, significantly improving the image quality particularly
for scenes with low temperature gradient. The filter should be set to “Off” or “Weak” for moving objects or
for the documentation of quick temperature changes.

9.2 Menu "File"
Those VarioCAM® HD functions that can be used to load thermograms and photos, to make settings
regarding contents and format individual images and image sequences to be saved are summarised in
the "File" menu.
9.2.1 Directory structure of the VarioCAM® HD
The directory names are set in the submenu „Directory“:

Files are always stored in a subdirectory. The definition of individual subdirectory names depends on the
setting made in the submenu “Directory”. The maximum number of files to be stored in the directory is
always limited to 100, in order to avoid having to search tediously within long lists and to ensure quickly
finding the desired files, even with large amounts of data.
9.2.1.1 Automatic directory structure (default setting)
With each data storage on the SDHC card the VarioCAM® HD sets first automatically subdirectories
whose names are automatically generated. In the settings directory “Automatic”, the file and directory
names cannot be specified by the user.

The name of the subdirectory is generated from the current data – always two letters for year, month and
day as well as two letters for continuous identification – for example, on 22.06.2012 the first directory
would be named 120622AA. In the directory the files are numbered consecutively, starting from 00 up to
99. The file name is composed of the hull name – always two letters for each directory name + month +
day, for example. AA06220 continuously until number AA062299.Within one year, in this way each file
can always be assigned to the associated directory. If a subdirectory is completely filled (e.g. file
AA062299.irb) the next file is created in directory 120622AB with the file name AB06220. The directory
name JJMMTTAZ is followed by directory JJMMTTBA, then JJMMTTBB, JJMMTTBC … JJMMTTBZ etc.
The file names are numbered consecutively starting with 00 to 99 and do not contain any year
identification in contrast to the directory. However, the directories are numbered with the year, month
and day from AA to ZZ. The maximum number of files cannot exceed 26 x 26 x 100 = 67.600 files in 676
automatically generated directories per day.

Please note that a new sub-directory is created after every restart of the thermography system and
subsequent data storage, as well as for every series measurement*, regardless of the contents of
directories already created beforehand. If additional data (VIS, audio, screenshot) is saved as additional
files, the number of possible thermal image files in one directory is reduced accordingly*.
9.2.1.2 Individual directory names

If directory names should be applied regardless of the date, the check in the dialog field “automatic” has
to be removed and the desired directory name can be edited. For this purpose at least four letters or
special characters are required. The directory name is limited to 15 characters. In addition to the user
specified directory name, always two letters are added analogueue for automatic directory creation e.g.
AA. AB…AZ, BA, BB…BZ…ZZ. In this way 26x26 directory names with the same root name can be
created.
Individual directory names have only four characters, consisting of the indicators AA…ZZ of each
directory name and serial numbers from 00…99:

If more individual directory names are assigned to one memory card, identical file names can arise. It is
therefore recommended to keep the directory structure in the transmission of data from the memory card
to the evaluation computer.
9.2.2 Menu item "Load"
9.2.2.1 Loading individual files from file list or gallery

The "Load" menu item can be used in order to load thermograms and photos already saved to the
SDHC-card and to display these on the display and/or the viewfinder. The images to be displayed can be
selected using the sub-menu items "Single file" or "Gallery".
If the "Single file" sub-menu item is selected, the sub-directories and their contents contained on the
SDHC-card are initially displayed as lists. In order to navigate between directories and files, is used;

and in order to navigate within the directory lists and file lists. is used. A directory can be opened
using the Enter button or navigating to the right; the file list of a sub-directory can be closed by
navigating to the left. A file, in turn, is selected by using the Enter button . On the right top, next to the,
file list, the preview image of the highlighted thermal image is displayed; and on the right bottom, a photo
is displayed (from IRB or *.jpg file). If the thermal image saved to the IRB contains further data, this is
indicated by the following letters in the left upper corner of the preview image:
■ V: photo, digital image (Visible)
■ A: audio file
■ S: image sequence, serial file

The button can be used in order to highlight files and directories; and the button can be used to
delete files and directories. In order to avoid any accidental loss of data, the process of deleting files must
be confirmed in a dialogue:

The file selected from the file list (highlighted blue) is displayed (large) by using the Enter button .
When the image is shown in its enlarged size, the right/left buttons can be used to navigate to the next
and/or previous image in the file list. If a photo is saved in the IRB, this photo is shown as a miniature
version to the left of the thermal image. The button can be used to toggle the display between thermal
image and photo. A voice comment contained in the IRB can be played by using the button. The
loaded image can be deleted by using the button.
In order to exit the full screen display, use the button so that subsidiary and file lists as well as preview
images can be displayed again.

The "Load Gallery" sub-menu function can be used in order to quickly find files from preview images.

After the function is started, the directories are shown as index cards, the contents of which can be
opened and then displayed by preview images by using the Enter button in each case. Within the
gallery, the joystick can be used for navigation purposes. In the event of more than 20 directories
and/or files, it is possible to scroll out of the display area. In analoguey to the single image display, the
Enter button must be pushed on the preview image in order to show the file in its enlarged size. The
functions available at this point correspond to the functions of the single image display (see above, see
also Fig. 87 and Fig. 88). Possible is then, for example, the change of the representation scale of the
loaded image
For subsequent processing of the opened enlarged images of „Single file“ or „gallery“ the Enter button
must be pushed again. When charging, the status indicator in the upper right corner of the image
changes accordingly: . With the now available (limited) menu settings an analysis and editing
of the loaded thermal image can be carried out. Possible is then, for example, the change of the
representating scale of the loaded image (see chapter 9.1.1 Menu item "Manual" – page 36),
measurements in the image (see chapter 9.3.1 and 9.3.2 from page 56) or the change of correction
parameters (see chapter 9.3.3 Analogue output * – page 61). The original stored comment to an image
can also be changed here.
Please note that the displayed date and time are constantly updated and therefore do not
correspond with the acquisition time of the image.

9.2.2.2 Loading and Playing Sequence Files

gallery displays are first loaded by clicking . For quick selection of the desired playback point within
longer sequences, the starting point can be marked with in 10% increments (see Fig. 93). The
playback is started and paused with , stops the playing and returns you to view the file list or gallery
display.

Play is marked in the top right of the image area by the button, while in the lower part of the
camera menu, a progress bar and the current frame number as well as the total number of images of the
sequence file are displayed (see Fig. 99 Automatic save). This can be different from single files in that no
measured values are displayed, nor can the scale be changed. For a detailed analysis of a sequence file,
IRBIS
®
3 evaluation software should be used.

In addition, no other picture elements are displayed when the sequence file is being played. The scaling
and range of the represented sequence file is adjusted automatically, regardless of the temperature rage
and scale used at the time of recording.
9.2.2.3 Loading and Playing Video Files
With VarioCAM® HD recorded video sequences (see Chapter 9.2.3.2 Video saving, page 52.
characterized by AVI file extension in the file list or the icon in the gallery view) single files can be
loaded from file lists or gallery display with the icon. Playback can be started and paused by pressing
Enter, while stops playing and returns you to view the file list or gallery display.

Play is marked in the top right of the image area by the button, while the name of the video file is
displayed simultaneously under the video image (see Fig. 95).
9.2.3 Menu item "Save"
Along with single image saving, the save button of the VarioCAM® HD can be used to save the
following, depending on the equipment:
■ Thermal image sequences with the maximum frame rate (real-time saving)
"Real time"
■ Series of single images (thermal image and photo)
"Autosave"
■ Video sequences (thermal image, digital image or merge) as AVI
"Video" and
■ Audiodateien (unabhängig von Thermobildern) als WAV-Datei

The menu item "Saving format" can be used in order to set the data and formats to be saved (see chapter
9.2.7 Menu item "Saving format" – page 55).
9.2.3.1 Real-time saving
The maximum writing speed possible for real-time saving* depends on the detector and the geometric
resolution, as well as on the properties of the used SDHC-card.
In order to achieve the maximum real-time saving frequency, we recommend using transcendextreme-speed SDHC-cards. Please check before starting real-time saving that sufficient
memory space is available on the used SDHC-card.

Real-time saving is started and terminated (immediately) by pushing the Enter button in the "Real
time" sub-menu. The following displays are shown with the real-time saving function executing
(additionally to the live image), see Fig. 97 Real-time saving indication – page 52:
■ Activated real-time saving function by checkmark in the menu
■ Red dot for currently executed saving, as well as the time elapsed since the start on the right side
below the palette
■ SDHC-card symbol in the symbol line on the right side below the thermal image: yellow (permanent
write access)
During real-time saving, only thermal images are stored in the IRB format. This way, it is possible to
subsequently edit and correct the digital data of the sequence using the IRBIS
®
3 analysis software.
Precise temporal allocation of the data is ensured by consecutive numbering of the single images within
the sequence and by saving time stamps in the header.
When (geometrically) allocating the thermal image sequence to a photo of the scene, it is
recommendable to install the VarioCAM
®
HD on a tripod in a stationary manner and to save a
photo before or after real-time saving in Merge mode.

9.2.3.2 Video saving
If the saved data of a serial measurement does not require any radiometric editing or if displaying the
temperature by means of shown measuring objects and/or allocating the temperatures using the false
colour representation is sufficient, video saving can be performed (as an alternative to real-time saving of
the digital raw data).
In this case, the currently displayed image area. including all selected image elements (for the setting see
chapter 9.1.5 Menu item "Elements" – page 43) is saved as a video sequence (AVI file) and can be
displayed with generally available player software (media player). The menu (to the left of the image), as
well as the help and status symbol lines (below the image) are not saved in the video. In analoguey to
real-time saving, video saving can be started and/or deactivated (immediately) by pushing the Enter
button in the “Video” sub-menu.

If the VarioCAM® HD is to be used as a “classic video camera” for real images (“visible”), the image mode
must be set to "Digital image" in the "Settings" menu (see chapter 9.1.2 Menu item "Mode" – page 37). It
is furthermore possible to record videos in the “Merge” image mode upon corresponding previous
selection. Since, taking the saved video data as a basis, no subsequent temperature correction for
changed parameters (emissivity, ambient temperature, transmission, path temperature) is possible, these
parameters should be set correctly before the recording procedure begins. Furthermore, possibly required
measurement definitions (measuring points or areas) should be defined before starting the measurement.
Image mode, temperature scale, palette settings and measurement definition can also be created or
changed during video recording, but they can no longer be changed in the saved video.
9.2.3.3 Automatic save (Autosave)
The "Autosave" function is used for serial recording of slower changing temperatures and simultaneously
saving thermal image and photo. The data and formats to be saved in turn are defined in the "Saving
format" menu item (see chapter 9.2.7, page 55). The available saving speed is influenced by the settings
made at this point, but also depends on the detector format and the properties of the used SDHC-card,
just like with real-time saving.

In order to start automatic saving, the start time (date, time) and the saving interval and the number of
thermograms to be saved must be defined initially. As an alternative to "Interval" and "Count", the
duration of series saving, otherwise calculated from the values for interval and number of images (Count),
can also be defined. Depending on the selected saving format, the minimum time interval is shown. When
opening the settings dialogue using the Enter button in the "Autosave" sub-menu, date and time of the
camera clock are accepted as start time. After having accepted all settings and after closing the dialog by
clicking OK (or using the button), series saving starts immediately. If a later start time is required or if
recording is to be started on a different day, the date and the start time must be changed accordingly.
Then, the dialogue must also be closed by clicking OK (or using the button) and the activated series
measurement is indicated with a red dot below the palette. However, the first image is then only saved at
the set point in time so that a value of “0/nnn” is shown below the palette. Series saving ends when the
defined number of images is reached and/or the selected duration has elapsed, but can also be stopped
by pushing the Enter button in the "Autosave" sub-menu. The dialogue opening thereafter allows for
aborting or continuing the current series measurement:

Thermograms can be equipped with comments with the help of an editor to be opened in the "Comment"
menu item. These comments are saved to the header of the IRB file and are available during analysis
using IRBIS

3 or IRBIS® 3 report.

There is a keyboard for entering alphanumeric characters, whereby this keyboard is shown by pushing
the Enter button in the comment line. The keyboard can simply be navigated with the joystick .
Capital and lower-case letters are switched similarly to a computer keyboard. There is an additional
keyboard page for numbers and selected special characters. A maximum of 50 characters can be
entered. The number of the current character is indicated on the upper margin of the keyboard. The
keyboard input is finished by pushing the button, and then the input text comment is accepted by
clicking OK and/or by using the button. The comment is also saved when saving the camera
configuration (see chapter 9.4.8 Menu item "System" – page 75).

If all data saved to the SDHC-card is to be deleted, this can be done by formatting the card. The
corresponding function must be started in the "Format SD" menu item.

After having clicked the "Format SD" item, a dialogue is displayed that must be confirmed by pushing the
Enter button in order to delete all data from the card and to re-format the card. After the card is
formatted, all data is deleted irrevocably.
This process cannot be undone!

9.3 Menu "Measure"
The menu "Measure" summarises all temperature measurement functions. The structure of the menu is
illustrated by Fig. 108. The individual menu items are described in more detail below.
In order that measured values are displayed, the corresponding setting in the "Image elements" menu
must be activated (see chapter 9.1.5 Menu item "Elements" – page 43).

It is possible to display the (global) temperature maximum and/or temperature minimum within the
thermal image by selecting the options "Maximum" and "Minimum". Position and value are consistently
updated within the image. Regardless of the palette selected for false colour representation, the
maximum is red and the minimum is blue.
The maximum and minimum values are only displayed within the central image area where no other
system indications are displayed. These indications are not contained in the thermal images saved
digitally, but can be saved when saving the display as screenshot. With the help of the IRBIS
®
analysis,
software, it is possible to show the maximum and minimum values in the entire image area in the event of
subsequent editing of the saved thermal images.
9.3.2 Menu item "Measurement definitions"

The "Measurement definitions" menu item can be used in order to define differently shaped measuring
objects (ROI, regions of interest). The VarioCAM
®
HD supports the simultaneous display of 8 different
measurement regions (global and 7 partial ROIs), which the local maximum and minimum values can
also be displayed for in each case, along with the average value. If previous measurement objects are
still saved in the database, the editor can be started using the menu “Measurement definitions”. Already
created measurement objects or its identifier can be hidden:

easily be performed later. The setting for this can be found in the storage format menu (see chapter 9.2.7

The shape of the ROI and the index of the measuring object active in each case are displayed in the left
top of the editor menu (see also point P1 in Fig. 117. ellipse E2 in Fig. 128).
A measuring point is initially created in the centre of the image and can be moved in the image area by
using the joystick . The “active” point is identified with a red square in crosshairs as well as an identifier
shaded in gray. After the position of the point is reached, the editor is exited by pushing the button:
Thereafter, the red mark on the point is no longer visible.
While the measuring objects are being moved, the measured value is not updated.
9.3.2.2 Line L*
The position of the measuring line can be defined by moving one of the terminal points or by
synchronously moving both terminal points simultaneously. The respective “active” point and/or both
points are also marked red in this (see Fig. 119):

If the button is pressed in the editor, the settings dialogue for displaying the measured values is
shown. For surface areas and lines, the maximum and minimum can be shown as values and as spot in
the image, along with the average value. Furthermore, the identifier of the measuring object can be
hidden and the (local) emissivity for the measuring object can be set. A further line can be created by

pushing the button without exiting the dialogue. The current line can be deleted within the dialogue by
using the button; the dialogue is closed by pushing the button.
Along with the option of deleting individual ROIs in the respective editor by using the button, all
created ROIs can be deleted simultaneously using the corresponding dialogue to be confirmed:

9.3.2.3 Rectangle R
A rectangle selected in the “Editor” sub-menu in the "New" menu item is initially displayed as a square in
the center of the image. Height and width can be changed using the joystick by changing the position of
the marked spot (see Fig. 123 and Fig. 124). If the position of the rectangle is to be changed, please
initially push the Enter button . The rectangle is then highlighted by a red dot in its center and can be
moved using the joystick without any changes to its shape (see Fig. 125).

9.3.2.4 Ellipse E*
The measuring object "Ellipse" selected in the "Editor" sub-menu in the "New" menu item is initially
displayed as a circle in the center of the image. The shape can also be changed by using the joystick
(red mark on line, see Fig. 126), the position can be changed after pushing the Enter button (red mark in
the center of the circle, see Fig. 127). Another ellipse can be created using the button.

9.3.2.5 Polygon PG*
The VarioCAM® HD supports polygon planes with a maximum of 11 points, the position of which can be
defined freely. After having defined the position of a (first) point (Fig. 129), a new point is created every
time the Enter button is pressed longer (Fig. 130. Fig. 133). whereby this new point can be moved to its
target position. Once more than one point is created, the Enter button can be pressed shortly in order to
toggle between the points in a circulating manner, the position of which can still be changed in this case.
When the third point is created, this third point is connected to the starting point defining a plane (Fig.
132). The Enter button must be pressed longer in order to create the next point starting from the active
point in a clockwise direction, which can then be moved with the joystick and saved by pressing Enter.
When all points are highlighted, the polygon plane can be moved without any changes to its shape (Fig.
134).

9.3.3 Analogue output *
In addition to displaying and storing temperatures, VarioCAM HD enables the optional output of
temperature-dependent analogue signals, 2 analogue outputs are available on the BreakOut-Box* for
this:

The connection is made to the terminal strip of the BreakOut-Box via port 1 (AOUT1) and 2 (AOUT2) as
well as 3 and 6 for the reference potential GND of both channels. Output voltages are of 1-5 V. A voltage
of 0 V during active analogue output indicates an error. The outputs are short circuit proof, but should be
completed to high impedance for use of temperature-proportional voltage (R> = 1 MΩ). The digital-toanalogue conversion is performed with a resolution of 8 bits, so that the values range from (1 ... 5) V
dissolved by 255 steps with a minimum step width of 15.686 mV. The voltage output voltage always
refers to the currently used calibration (see chapter 9.4.1 Menu item "Calibration" – page 68).
Examples:

With the measurement object line, polyline, rectangle. Plygon, ellipse, the analogue signal can also refer
to maximum or minimum temperature. For an ROI, however, only one value (the average or maximum or
minimum) can be selected and linked to one of the two analogue outputs. Should two analogue signals
be needed, for example the average and maximum of one surface, this must be entered twice.

The assignment of average, maximum or minimum for analogue output is done by choosing from the
measured value display. For the settings, the following rules apply:

The "Correction" menu item can be used in order to enter the correction parameters emissivity and
ambient temperature, as well as path temperature, relative humidity, transmission and distance in
accordance with the current measuring situation. These values are stored with each thermal image and
can be displayed and changed, if required, during subsequent editing of the thermograms using the
IRBIS
®
3 analysis software.
Taking into consideration the real measuring conditions, particularly the:
■ Surface properties of an measuring object and the temperature level of the environment
■ Transmission of the optical channel, path temperature and distance.
The parameters emissivity and ambient temperature, as well as path temperature, relative humidity,
transmission, and distance allow for precise temperature measurement. In order to properly enter the
respective correction parameters, exact knowledge of the real properties of the measuring object, as well
as of the ambient conditions and the measurement setup is required. The correction parameters are
accepted globally for the entire image.

The VarioCAM® HD works with a wavelength range of (7.5 … 14) µm. The influence of the
atmosphere on the measurement result can be neglected during the majority of the measurements
in this range – therefore, the transmission degree is set to 1.00 ex factory. Only in the event of
measurements over longer distances (over approx. 100 m) and/or through additional window
materials, gases and fog, will the transmission decrease and the path temperature, the relative
humidity and/or transmission (dew), and distance should be defined and taken into consideration.
The option "Materials" provides an alphabetically sorted collection of the emissivity of different materials,
within the framework of which the different surface conditions are partially taken into consideration. When
material and condition (status) are selected, the emissivity of the selected material is accepted as global
emissivity.

The factory setting of the emissivity is 1.00. Therefore, it is assumed that 100 % of the
measured radiation is emitted by the measuring object. The measuring object corresponds to
the "ideal black-body emitter" and is non-reflective.
If the actual (lower) emissivity of the measuring object is to be taken into consideration, it is absolutely
necessary to also determine the ambient temperature ("reflected temperature"), which must also be
entered as a correction parameter. The ambient temperature frequently differs from the air temperature or
even from the temperature of the camera.
Saving the distance is of particular importance for a number of measuring situations, for example in order
to be able to also perform geometric measurements within the thermograms when analyzing the
thermograms. However, if "manual" is the option selected for setting the distance, the distance input with
the correction parameters is only saved within the thermogram. This is suitable in the event of stationary
measurement setups where the distance between camera and measuring object does not change and
can be determined easily. If the "Automatic" option is selected, the distance calculated from the process
of adjusting the focus is displayed after each manual or automatic focusing ("Dist", see chapter 8.2.1
Elements of the user interface – page 28) and saved within the thermal image. The laser rangefinder*
(LRF) integrated into the VarioCAM
®
HD allows for precise distance measurement up to a distance of
approx. 70 m (see chapter 9.3.8 Menu item "Laser" – page 66). If the "Automatic" option is selected, the
distance measured with the LRF before the image was recorded is saved to the thermal image once the
focus setting is changed afterwards.

The distance entered for the correction parameters does not retroact on the focus.
9.3.5 Menu item "Difference"*
When activating the function "Difference" the temperatures of the previous image content will be
deducted from the temperatures of the current image pixel by pixel. This function can be very helpful if
very small temperature changes should be displayed, but the scene has a larger temperature gradient. If
areas of the scene warm up after activating the function “difference”, positive temperatures are displayed.
When cooling down, negative temperatures are displayed. When activating the function “difference” the
difference mode is displayed in the upper right corner of the image above the palette: . The display of
the temperature scale °C to the left of date/time disappears. All temperature differences are shown in
Kelvin, independent of the choice of the temperature unit in menu item “System Regional” (see chapter
9.4.2 Menu item "Subframes"* – page 69). The temperature scale setting is being adjusted when
switching in the “difference” mode.

All correction parameters must be correctly set up before you use the difference image function
and subsequent image storing. A subsequent change of this in the difference image is no longer
possible.
9.3.6 Menu item "GPS"
The GPS receiver integrated into the VarioCAM® HD is activated in the "GPS" menu item. After having
switched on the GPS receiver, the function of the GPS receiver is displayed on the right-hand side below
the Jenoptik logo as a symbol. When the GPS receiver is activated, the display of the GPS data (latitude,
longitude, satellites) can also be activated in the first information line in the "Image elements" menu (see
chapter 9.1.5 Menu item "Elements" – page 43). When switching off the GPS receiver, the first
information line is hidden automatically.

Along with latitude, longitude and the number of satellites, further GPS information is saved together with
the thermal image: height, speed and bearing.
9.3.7 Menu item "WLAN"*
VarioCAM® HD has a WLAN interface through which selected camera functions can be remote controlled.
For an optimum transmission quality, the wireless antenna must be mounted on top of the camera (see
Fig. 1 View from the side – page 14) and then placed vertically. The activation is done in the menu item
“WLAN” and is displayed with the icon in the info line.

The remote-controlled use of VarioCAM
®
HD with WLAN is done with IRBIS® 3 remote* as described in
the user manual for IRBIS
®
3 remote.
9.3.8 Menu item "Laser"
The laser range finder* (LRF) integrated into the VarioCAM® HD allows for precise distance measurement
depending on the target size, the angle, and the surface properties up to a distance of approx. 70 m.
Along with the activation in the "Laser" menu item, the LRF can also be activated and deactivated directly
by pushing the multi-function button (factory setting). When this function is activated, the yellow laser
symbol will be displayed in the tool bar below the Jenoptik logo simultaneously with an acoustic
signal (2 x beep). The laser pointer, integrated depending on the equipment, is activated analogueously.
With integrated variants without laser range finder, measurement objects can be marked with a laser
pointer without measuring the distance. This function as well as LRF without updated distance
measurements can be turned on/off with the button “Laser”.

On the front of the device, the VarioCAM
®
HD is equipped with a laser range finder* (LRF) and/or laser
pointer* generating a visible laser beam. Avoid looking directly into the laser beam and do not point
the laser beam to other persons. This may damage their eyes.
When installing the thermography system to machines and systems in a stationary manner, it must be
ensured that the laser beam is not located at eye level.

The activation of the "laser rangefinder autofocus" feature will support the temperature-contrastdependent focus settings by measuring the object distance with the laser rangefinder beforehand. This is
especially helpful when high-contrast objects with different object distances are located in the centre of
the image. To use this feature, start the autofocus and then point the laser at the measurement object.
9.3.10 Menu item "LRF - PAF"* (Permanent LRF supported autofocus)
In order to correct the focus setting under constantly changing object distances, the function “LRF – PAF”
(permanent laser range finder supported autofocus) can be activated for distances up to 70 m. Here, the
distance of the measurement object is continuously measured by the laser range finder, and compared
with the previous distance. For distance changes more than the current range of focal depth allowed, an
automatic correction of the focus settings will be performed.

9.3.11 Menu item "Light"
In order to improve the image quality of visual recordings under poor light conditions, the LED video light
can be activated by pressing the button “Light”. Alternatively, it can also be turned on or off with the
multifunction button (factory setting).

9.4.1 Menu item "Calibration"
Ex factory, the VarioCAM® HD is calibrated for measuring temperatures in the range of (-40…1.200) °C*.
Depending on the equipment, the total measuring range and the individual ranges of your device may
deviate from this standard calibration. The actually available ranges can be found in the "Calibration"
menu item:

Depending on the object temperature and the measurement assignment, the measuring ranges can be
set manually or automatically. However, it must be ensured that the temperature of the current scene
does not exceed the set range in order to avoid overloads within the thermogram.
The VarioCAM® HD is equipped with a highly sensitive uncooled microbolometer detector. The
object radiations occurring in thermographic practice do not induce any changes to the detector.
However, overloads exceeding a black body radiation of 1.000°C in the measuring ranges 1 and
2*, as well as 2.000 °C in measuring range 3* may result in irrevocable damages and thus must be
avoided.

In order to prevent an exceeding of the limits of the set calibration range, the option "Automatic"* of the
menu item "Calibration" can be activated to automatically adjust the calibration settings to the currently
observed scene. The toggle time of the calibration range depends on the maximum temperature of the
current scene. If the temperature exceeds the maximum temperature of the current calibration range, the
camera automatically switches to the next higher range.
When using the VarioCAM® HD for mobile applications and in the event of a constantly changing
scene, we recommend deactivating the automatic measuring range setting (factory setting).
9.4.2 Menu item "Subframes"*

Depending on the VarioCAM® HD model, higher frame rates* can be used. Therefore, fast changing
temperature differences and mobile objects can be visualised. For this, the size of the displayed image is
reduced. The sub frame formats are only for cameras with XGA detectors of (1.024 x 768) IR pixels that
can be activated in the menu item “image format”. Alternatively, the settings for sub frame or calibration
range can also be changed with the remote control menu of the Software IRBIS
®
3 online. The
functionality of VarioCAM
®
HD is limited in the sub frame mode. Data storage in the sub frame mode is
only possible in conjunction with IRBIS
®
3 online.
The VarioCAM® HD with detector format (640 x 480) does not display images on display/searcher or
CVI/VGA. The use of the sub frame mode with this camera model is only possible with GigE-Interface.
The use of sub frame modes influences the date shown in chapter XX on page XX.

The settings that can be selected in the "Extras" menu item activate the following functions:
■ Premium* A camera-internal compensation (NUC) is performed before each saving.
■ RE* "Resolution Enhancement" – In order to save the image, the hardware-based microscan
procedure is activated (recording procedure in order to increase the geometric
resolution). The thermal image is scanned optically several times, whereby the geometric
resolution from (1.024 x 768) to (2.048 x 1.536) and/or from (640 x 480) to (1.280 x 960)
IR pixels is reached by shifting the pixel allocation by half a pixel width in each case. In
order to use the Resolution Enhancement function, the thermography system must be
positioned firmly (tripod) and this function is only suitable for measuring objects with a
constant temperature.
■ DRE* "Dynamic Resolution Enhancement" – In addition to the activation of the Resolution
Enhancement function’s hardware, the motions of the microscan mechanics and the
measuring objects are used by means of specific software routines in order to increase
the geometric resolution. This way, the function is also suitable for manual operation and
moving objects.
■ Eversharp* The images are stored as an image series in a file. With the activation of Eversharp/
multi-focus function, the focus setting is changed gradually for shorter and further
distances between the individual recordings. In this way, all parts contained in the
current scene of the image can be captured sharply in at least one of the individual
recordings. When loading the Eversharp sequence IRBIS
®
3 calculates from the
Eversharp sequence a deep sharp image. The display of distance corresponds to the
initial setting. A display of distance corrected images with VarioCAM
®
HD is not
possible.

Depending on the lens, the object distance, and object used, changing the Eversharp/ multi-focus
parameter may be necessary for optimal image correction. For shorter distances and scenes with very
different intervals of individual image parts, a greater number of steps are recommended. The number of
steps corresponds to the number of recordings, and after the last shot, focusing is reset to the initial
settings. It can be adjusted from 3 to maximum 10 steps (=single shot). In turn, the lens, the object
distance and object also depends on the step range: For small differences, the setting is “minimum or
small” and for greater differences, the setting is “normal or large”.
The use of the Eversharp/ multi-focus function requires the permanent installation of the camera.
The function is not suitable for moving objects and measuring of rapid changes in temperature.

For the evaluation of recordings made with the Eversharp/ multi-focus function, the analysis
software IRBIS® 3 is necessary since the calculation of the deep sharp thermograms is only
possible with this PC software. A display of the corrected thermograms with VarioCAM
®
HD is not
possible!
9.4.4 Menu item "Compensation"
In order to implement the specified measurement accuracy, the VarioCAM® HD performs an internal
compensation (factory setting). In this, the optical channel is closed for a short period of time by means of
a shutter. The shutter is part of the optomechanics. It is swiveled into the optical path for a short time as
reference.

In the Shutter Interval mode, the interval for an automatic compensation can be set (see also Fig.
167). For this, the time after which an automatic compensation is to be performed must be entered in
seconds. The limitations for the interval to be specified are between 5 sec and approx. 16 min (995 sec).
Once the entered value exceeds or falls below these limits it is adapted automatically. The recommended
factory setting is 60s. Immediately after start-up of the VarioCAM
®
HD the shutter interval is adapted
automatically by the internal camera control depending on the change of the device temperature over the
course of the first 5 minutes. During this time, the time specified for the "Intervall" option is ineffective.
In the Shutter "Automatic" mode, the parameter “sensitivity”, depending on the measurement situation
and requirements, can be set up in the stages “strong”, “medium” or “weak”: for maximum accuracy, but
at the expense of shorter compensation intervals, the sensitivity level “strong” can be chosen. Here, very
small changes of the camera temperature already lead to compensation. If short compensation intervals
are not desired due to the short interruption in data transfer, the sensitivity level can be adjusted to
“medium” or “weak” with less measuring accuracy. Therefore, only medium to bigger changes in camera
temperature lead to compensation and the compensation interval is extended.
The VarioCAM
®
HD’s specified measurement accuracy requires the compensation interval
"Automatic" or "Interval" (compensation interval of a maximum of 60 s).
When switching the compensation to the "Object" option, the function is referenced to the current scene.
As a consequence, this results in a differential representation referring to the scene present at the
moment of compensation. This way, it is possible to visualise very small changes in temperature even
with comparatively high scene dynamics.

It is possible to assign one function to several buttons at the same time.
9.4.6 Menu item "Alarm"
The "Alarm" menu item can be used in order to define conditions, the fulfillment of which will trigger the
camera to perform actions.

The activated alarm function is displayed in the toolbar below the logo with the symbol . The header
in the setting menu 'Alarm Definition' is also shown in red. These displays are made irrespective of
whether an alarm condition is met or not. For two measurement objects (1. ROI and 2. ROI) temperature
thresholds can be defined, that apply to the average (“Avg”), temperature maximum (“Max”) or
temperature minimum (“Min”) of the corresponding measurement object or the overall picture (“Global”).
For each ROI and the corresponding temperature threshold, a comparison is defined: > or <, where for
“max” only > and “Min” only < selectable is.
If these defined conditions are met, the following actions can be performed:
■ OSD Alarm indication on display viewfinder including display of achieved condition
■ IRB Image storage according to setting storage format

Two (different) alarm conditions can each trigger different actions or can also be logically linked together
(AND/OR). Several actions are selectable for each condition. When selecting AND linkage it means both
alarm conditions must be met. Only then both conditions will be run for the set alarm actions. When
selecting OR linkage it means that only one condition must be met. Only the selected condition will be run
for the set alarm condition. Different audio signals are displayed for Max >, Avg >, Avg < and Min <4 as
audio alarm so that an acoustic differentiation of various alarms is possible. When selecting OSD, the
alarm is shown on the display/viewfinder.

9.4.7 Menu item "Configuration"
You can save your individual device settings as device configuration in the VarioCAM® HD. This way, you
can configure and, if required, reload user and/or application profiles matching different requirements.
Additionally, you can define actions the camera is to perform when the system is started. These actions
are also saved to the corresponding configuration.

As an alternative to a configuration name generated automatically consisting of a date and a time, e.g.
cfg_20120622_1530, a name consisting of a maximum of 20 characters can be edited in order to save
the configuration.
When loading the factory settings, all previously made system settings will be undone. If settings
must possibly be re-used at a later point in time, we recommend saving a user configuration
beforehand.

The "System" menu item contains the settings and information about the basic functions of the
VarioCAM

HD. Along with the settings for language, date and time, which as a rule must only be
configured rarely, it is possible to set the brightness of the viewfinder* and the display, to set the font size,
as well as to make a number of further settings for representation and navigation within the menu,
amongst other things.
After the system settings were adapted to the individual requirements, we recommend saving the
settings in a user configuration.

9.4.8.1 "Display" Setting

The "Display" sub-menu can be used in order to select the display settings for the VarioCAM
®
HD. In the
standard configuration (factory settings) the display is switched from the display to the viewfinder* when
the display is folded to the camera housing (active display: automatic). However, you can fixedly set
Display or Viewfinder (Finder) as active display element.
The brightness values of display and viewfinder can be set independently using the levels "Bright",
"Medium" and "Dimmed". When the ambient lighting conditions are "normal", the brightness setting
"Medium" is absolutely sufficient for the display; in dark conditions, the setting “Dimmed” should be
selected.
The DVI-D output can also be set, with the formats 768 p and 800 p being the available selection options.
Regarding the FBAS interface (TV output), it is possible to toggle between the standards PAL and NTSC.
9.4.8.2 "Regional" Setting

The sub-menu "Regional" can be used in order to set the language, the date format, the date separator
and the time format. Number and selection of the languages available in each case depend on the
equipment. The units for the distance and for the temperature can also be set.

Setting the date and the time corresponds to the procedure usual for PCs: we recommend entering the
information in the corresponding dialogues on a per-line basis from the top to the bottom.
9.4.8.4 "Menu layout" Setting

The sub-menu "Menu layout" is used in order to make the settings for the graphical user interface. The
selection options for the font size comprise the 3 levels "Large", "Normal" and "Small". Particularly in the
event of a large font size, a part of the text shown in the menus is no longer displayed completely,
because the available space is insufficient. However, when navigating to the corresponding menu item,
this menu item is displayed completely even when it exceeds the menu width.
When switching from day to night mode the system switches from dark font on light background to light
font on dark background. A possible blinding effect in darkness is reduced significantly by the
considerably darker menu representation.

The way the navigation in the camera menu is controlled can also be adapted to individual requirements.
For quick navigation, the experienced user can set sub-menus to drop down automatically when a menu
item is selected. This way, pushing the Enter button on the corresponding menu item, otherwise
neccessary, is no longer required. When exiting the menu item, the sub-menu will be closed automatically
as well. When this function is activated, the speed of the sub-menu dropping down can also be set.
Regarding the button response, the delay time can be selected in the three levels "Slow", "Medium", and
"Fast". In order to accelerate the navigation within the menu, it is possible to navigate from the "Settings"
menu directly to the "Image" menu using → and vice versa using ← (menu cycle "Horizontal"). It is
furthermore possible to navigate from the lower menu line directly to the first menu line using ↓ and vice
versa using ↓ (menu cycle "Vertical"). In order to combine both variants, you can select the sub-menu
"Allover" option in the menu cycle.
In order to play voice comments, as well as alarm and system signals, the volume can be set to the three
levels "Quiet", "Normal" and "Loud".

HD is delivered with the latest firmware version. However, the firmware of the camera is
constantly evolving and expanding the range of available operation functions. If you go to the sub-menu
“firmware update”, you will be able to update your camera’s firmware version. Further information about
available updates can be found on InfraTec’s website or by calling InfraTec’s service hotline (see chapter
14 Service – page 92).

For the firmware update, please proceed as follows:
■ Format a SDHC card
■ Copy the updates on the SDHC card
■ Connect VarioCAM

HD with the power supply
■ Charge VarioCAM

HD with full battery

■ Plug in the SDHC card with updates into the card slot
■ Select on the page “firmware update” Start Update and confirm with OK
Make sure you have a reliable power supply before you update your VarioCAM

HD: Connect the
camera with the wall wart and insert a fully charged battery. Please do not disconnect the camera from
the power supply during the update.

During the firmware update, the whole screen turns black and the LED lamp on the camera starts blinking

10 Software installation
10.1 Installation instructions
In order to operate the VarioCAM
®
HD using the GigE interface, the driver software “WinPcap” must be
installed first. We recommend using a GigE network card - independent of the company’s network - in
order to actuate the VarioCAM
®
HD. Depending on the used Ethernet adapter, different configuration
options will be available after the Ethernet adapter is installed.
We recommend using the internal GigE network card at all times for camera connection.
For the installation described below, you must dispose of the access rights of the user group,
"
Administrators".
10.2 Installation of WinPcap
Upon execution of the file "WinPcap_4_1_2.exe", please follow the setup wizard by always clicking
"Next >".

10.2.1 Setting the network adapter

Upon opening the "Network and Sharing Center", the "Change adapter settings" menu item can be
selected. In this menu item, the network card to be used must be highlighted and its properties must be
opened by using the right mouse button.
10.2.2 Setting the IP address
Before configuring the network card for being used in connection with the camera, the properties of the
interface card to be used must be checked. In this, releasing non essential functionalities and assigning a
fixed IP address are important. The screenshots shown below provide an overview:

Please note that you only need the components described above in order to establish an Ethernet
connection to the VarioCAM
®
HD. Therefore, we recommend deactivating any further components
contained in the input mask.

If the option "Internet protocol (TCP/IP) " is selected, you can use the "Properties" button in order to set
the IP address of the GigE network card. This IP address can be freely defined in accordance with the
specifications made by your network in the "Use the following IP address" menu item.
During the further progress of the installation you will need two free network addresses. Should you have
any questions regarding this, please contact your network administrator directly.
The
"
Retrieve IP address automatically" option must not be selected. If this option is however
activated, the computer will try to retrieve a dynamic network address from the camera system,
which is indicated by the corresponding network symbol in the tool bar. In this case. no connection
can be established to the VarioCAM
®
HD.

10.2.3 Configuration of the network card
You can use the "Configure…" button in the “Properties of LAN connections” window in order to define
the properties of the network card.
We strongly recommend activating the "Jumbo Packet" property in order to achieve a trouble-free
Ethernet connection to the VarioCAM
®
HD. This function significantly reduces the occupancy rate of the
network and allows for loss-free data transmission even at high frame rates.

12 Maintenance of the device
12.1 Cleaning
The possible maintenance work to be performed on the VarioCAM® HD is limited to the process of
cleaning outer surfaces.
The optical surfaces of the lens are equipped with high-quality optical layers. Avoid any contact
with these surfaces and protect these surfaces against dirt and damages. Therefore, position the
related protective cap on the lens if the device is not in use.
If cleaning the optical surfaces is nevertheless required, please only use wood-free absorbent cotton or
Professional Wipes Kleenex in combination with 96% ethanol. Please contact the manufacturer in the
event of strong contaminations.
When the lens is removed (lens change), the aperture of the camera housing must be protected
against any kind of contact with the inner components. It must be ensured that no dirt can penetrate
the inside of the camera. Interventions of any kind into the inside of the thermography camera are
expressly prohibited.
Maintenance and repair work exceeding the actions and measures described within the framework of this
user manual must only be performed by authorised skilled personnel. If this is not observed, the warranty
and liability obligations of the manufacturer will be forfeit.
12.2 Calibration
The VarioCAM® HD system was calibrated very carefully to the official norm with the manufacturer,
maintaining the measure connection in doing so.
We recommend having the calibration checked by the manufacturer or by another certified authority at
intervals of two years. This check should be performed in combination with the general maintenance of
the device with the manufacturer.

13 Protection of the environment
The VarioCAM
®
HD is an optoelectronic device containing specific infrared lenses and electronic printed
circuit boards. These components must be disposed of specifically when the device is at the end of its
use.
The manufacturer offers to take back the VarioCAM
®
HD product from the customer in order to ensure
that the device is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner when it is at the end of its use.
