Hardware Manual Maintenance
Maintenance
This chapter provides information about maintaining your DS600 system.
Back Up Files
You should back up your files on a regular basis.
As you work with your system, you create work files that are typically saved to your hard drive. You should make a copy of these files to use as a back up in case your hard drive stops functioning properly.
You can use a network connection or an external CD/DVD writer to back up your system.
Defragment Hard Drive
You should defragment your hard drive regularly. Select Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter to open the utility included with the operating system. Follow the instructions included in the operating system online help.
System Restore
The restore process returns your system to the original factory settings.
Before you start the restore process, back up all of your files. See Back Up Files (on page 24) for details. The restore process completely overwrites the hard drive that contains your system files. Any additional media drives in your system are not overwritten.
Recovery Solutions
Recovery Solutions, by PC Angel, gives you multiple options to restore your system back to a working state in the event that it has encountered problems. Using the simplest method, a non-destructive media-less recovery solution will get your system working properly within seconds. Please use this section of the manual as a resource in the event that you need to recover your system due to software and OS related problems or hard drive failure.
Note: In the event of a hard drive failure you must have created backup media.

Infocaster™ DS600 Chapter 3 Hardware Manual Maintenance
Create Your Backup Media
To prevent data loss, it is important to back up your media to an external optical drive or USB recovery media using the PC Recovery Center. To launch the Recovery Center, open the Start Menu and select All Programs > PC Recovery Center > PC Recovery Center.
Note: We recommend Maxell or Fuji DVDRs. We do not recommend Staples, Sony, or CDRW media.
Recovery Options
Recovery allows you to restore your system using five methods, from non-destructive to destructive. It is recommended that you recover your system in stages beginning with the non-destructive method first, which retains your user data. If necessary you can do a full system restore back to its original state.
Launch Recovery
Use one of these methods to launch Recovery.
During the reboot process, press F8 to invoke the Windows Advanced Boot Options dialog, and
select the Repair Your Computer option.
Go to the Windows START menu and choose All Programs > PC Recovery Center > PC Recovery
Center.
Choose a Recovery Option
Master Boot Record Restore: Accessed through the launch method (F10) and replaces the Master
Boot Record with the original files.
MS System Restore: Accessed through both launch methods and takes you directly to Microsoft’s
System Tools for simple replacement of past data and information.
Non-Destructive Recovery: Restores the original Windows operating system and leaves the current
registry intact. User installed applications and data are retained and user installed updates are reset.
System Recovery - No Format: Creates and moves all C:\ files to C:\mybackup<date> to preserve
your data. The process then restores to the factory image. User applications need to be reinstalled. Data files are still accessible in the new directory.
System Recovery - Quick Format: System is restored to its factory image and no data is retained.
Applications must be reinstalled.
