Connecting up
This section describes how to connect your MCP-601ES to your other audio components and to a power outlet, ready for use. Before connecting
devices to your MCP-601ES we recommend switching both devices off.
Connecting to your audio source
You connect your audio source to your MCP-601ES using the following connectors on the back panel:
INPUT (L, R, SL, SR, C, SW)Phono line-level inputs for left, right, surround left, surround right, centre and subwoofer. Connect to the
appropriate outputs of your decoder or other source. If you are connecting to a PURE DAP-601ES decoder, use
the six-way phono to phono cable included with your decoder.
Connecting to your speakers
You connect your speakers to your MCP-601ES using the following connectors on the back panel:
SW OUTPhono line-level output to your SUB 10 speaker system or other active subwoofer unit
FRONT (L, R)Binding post high-level speaker connections to your front SAT 4 or other passive speakers
REAR (SL, SR)Binding post high-level speaker connections to your rear/surround SAT 4 or other passive speakers
CBinding post high-level speaker connections to your centre SAT 4 or other passive speaker
Connecting to the power
Once all audio connections are complete, as described above, connect the supplied power cable to the power socket on the rear panel of your
MCP-601ES and the other end to a wall power outlet.
Positioning your speakers
This section provides some recommendations for where to position your speakers and how to layout the speakers in your room. The optimum
positioning of speakers depends on a number of factors including whether you listen mostly to movies or music and the furnishings you have in
your room. However, the shape and size of your room has perhaps the greatest effect on positional audio.
General positioning guidelines for each speaker are provided below:
Front speakersPlace at about 45 degrees to each other, angled towards your listening position at about head height when you are
seated in your listening position.
Centre speakerPlace at around the same height as the front speakers and as close to the screen as possible. The centre speaker is
commonly placed on top of your TV and usually lying on its side for stability.
Surround speakersPlace behind you and angled slightly towards you, or on the side walls pointing towards each other at around
30—60 cm above your head.
SubwooferPlace almost anywhere, generally best on the floor and not too close to walls or corners.
The following examples provide a good starting point for the most common types of room layout when you are using a DVD player and TV.
We recommend trying your speakers in the recommended configuration and then fine tuning the setup to suit your preference.
In all the examples given, the position of the subwoofer depends largely on your personal preference, as bass is directionless. As a general rule
you get more bass if the subwoofer is on the floor (which is our recommendation), if you place it near to a wall, or if you place it in a corner. You
get less bass if you move the subwoofer away from any of these surfaces.

In the corner of a room
In a long room
This layout is not very symmetrical, so you have sounds reaching you at different times
and at different volumes.
Try the following:
z If speakers closer to you sound much louder than those further away, set the
balance for each speaker.
z If you’re much closer to the surround speakers than the front speakers, add some
surround delay.
A long room causes large variations in distance between speakers and the listening position.
You may also find that the surround sounds are lost behind you.
Try the following:
z If speakers closer to you sound much louder than those further away, set the
balance for each speaker.
z If you’re much closer to the surround speakers than the front speakers, add some
surround delay.
z If the surround information is being lost, move the surround speakers either
alongside you, or in front of you.
In an L-shaped room
In a small room
An L-shaped room has a large unused area that can damage the surround effect, lose
volume, and drain the sound of bass.
Try the following:
z If speakers closer to you sound much louder than those further away, set the
balance for each speaker.
z If you’re much closer to the surround speakers than the front speakers, add some
surround delay.
z If the bass is weak, increase the subwoofer’s balance, or place it near a wall or
in a corner.
z If the dialogue is indistinct, move the front and centre speakers closer together, or
increase the centre speaker’s balance.
A small room can stifle the surround sound if you are too close to the speakers, and
make the dialogue indistinct if the front speakers are behind the centre speaker.
Try the following:
z Place the screen along the widest wall for the best surround area
z If the bass is too strong, reduce the subwoofer’s balance, or move it away from walls
or corners
z Add some surround delay to make the room seem larger
z If you are very close to the centre speaker add some centre delay

Switching on and off
Before switching on for the first time, check all connections and ensure that the volume on your source is turned down.
Ensure that the supplied power cable is connected and the power is on at the wall.
Push and release the Power button on the front of your MCP-601ES to switch the unit on or off. After about three seconds, the five blue power
LEDs will light up indicating that the unit is switched on.
