Hello reader!
I hope the reason why you are reading this guide is that you want to build a
bamboo arcade controller yourself. Highve in that case!
You will need a few things from IKEA and an arcade controller kit consisting of a joystick,
buttons, usb encoder and cables. You will also need a few common wood working tools,
a bunch of screws and a few bits and pieces. I will specify them all in this guide.

There are a couple of ways to design and build arcade controllers.
My goal is to easily build an arcade controller that doesn’t require expensive
tools. I want people to start building arcade controllers so they can experience how
nice it is to play games with joystick and buttons.

This is only the arcade controller, you will need to connect it to a computer
to be able to play games.
Why not build yourself a RetroPie using the cheap mini computer Raspberry Pi.

Perhaps you can build a matching bamboo arcade machine using other IKEA items.

Hej läsare!
Jag hoppas att skälet till att du läser denna guide är att du
tänkt bygga en egen bambu-arkadkontroll. Woho! High five!
Du kommer att behöva några saker från IKEA och ett
arkadkontroll-kit bestående av joystick, knappar, usb styrkort och
kablage. Utöver detta kommer du behöva lite verktyg, skruv och
lite annat. Allt är beskrivet i denna guide.

Det finns olika sätt att designa och konstruera en arkadkontroll på.
Mitt mål är att det ska vara enkelt att bygga en arkadkontroll och att
det inte ska krävas dyra verktyg. Jag vill att folk börjar bygga
arkadkonroller så de kan uppleva hur bra det är att spela spel med
joystick och knappar.

Detta är bara arkadkontrollen. Den behöver såklart kopplas ihop med
en dator för att kunna spela med. Jag rekommenderar verkligen att köra
RetroPie på den billiga datorn Raspberry Pi.

Kanske kan du bygga en bambu arkad-maskin av andra IKEA produkter.

There are a bunch of arcade controller kits available online. Many of them contains snap-in buttons suitable for a thin panel.
This arcade controller is made with a thicker board and screw-in buttons are more suitable.

Take the box VARIERA and remove the handle. Measure 6cm and draw a cutting line parallell with the bottom.
Repeat on all sides.

Using the carpenter’s saw, carefully cut along the 6cm line. Be extra careful in the end. Put the top bit aside.

Såga försiktigt itu lådan längs 6cm linjen med fogsvansen. Var extra försiktig vid slutet.

With the sanding block and the sandpapers, sand the edges of the box until the box can lay perfectly at against APTITLIG
cutting board. Start with coarse and nish o with the nest sandpaper.

Slipa kanterna på lådan med kloss och sandpapper så att lådan kan ligga helt platt emot APTITLIG
skärbrädan. Börja med grovt och avsluta med fint sandpapper.

Draw another cutting line parallell and 23cm away from the long side.

Rita ytterligare en såglinje parallellt med långsidan och 23cm ifrån.

Measure 33cm from the edge and draw a cutting line there.
Measure from the opposite edge if you do not want the IKEA logo.

Saw along the second cutting line. Save that piece too.

Double check that the printed layout matches the set of buttons.
For this controller I have 8x28mm and 2x24mm buttons. Follow the instructions on the page to make sure the scale is
correct. Center the page on the APTITLIG board and tape the corners.

Sand the edges until they are smooth. Round or chamfer the edges a bit.

Remove the tape and the paper.

Ta bort tejpen och pappret.

Use the hammer and the nail to punch marks through the paper and onto the board where the buttons will be placed.

Drill the last eight 28mm holes.

Borra de sista åtta 28mm hålen.

Drill the three 24mm holes using the wood spade bit.
Put the APTITLIG cutting board on a thick plank and place your foot on it. While weighing it down, drill the holes.
Try not to tilt the power drill in any direction, that will result in oval holes.
You can practice drilling a hole on the piece that was left in 6b. Also use shoes!

Borra de tre 24mm hålen med centrumborren.
Placera APTITLIG skärbrädan på en tjock planka och ställ ena foten på den. Borra hålen medans du tynger
ner skärbrädan. Undvik att luta borrmaskinen då detta resulterar i ovala hål.
Du kan provborra ett hål på biten som blev över i 6b. Använd skor!

Follow the instructions for the wood stain varnish. Paint a couple of layers until you are satised with the nish.

Take the joystick and unscrew the ball top and remove the dust washer.
Unscrew the four screws and remove the mounting plate.

Ta fram joysticken och skruva av bollen och ta bort dammskyddet.

Mark the mounting holes with the pencil. Then assemble the joystick with the mouting plate again.

Märk ut skruvhålen med pennan. Sätt sedan tillbaka monteringsplattan på joysticken igen.

Turn APTITLIG cutting board over so that the bottom is facing up. Place the mouting plate on the board and center the
hole of the plate with the hole in the board for the joystick. Ajust the plate until the edge is parallell with the edge of
the board. Fix it with tape, carfully turn the board over and check again if the plate looks centered.

Vänd på APTITLIG skärbrädan så att undersidan är vänd uppåt. Placera monteringsplattan på brädan och
centrera hålet på plattan med hålet i brädan för styrspaken. Justera plattan tills sidan på den är
parallell med sidan på skärbrädan. Fixera med tejp och försiktigt vänd på skärbrädan och kontrollera
igen att hålen är centrerade.

Install the joystick. Use washers if the screws are too long.
Use a drop of epoxy in the screw hole if the screws seems loose.

Montera joysticken. Använd brickor om skruvarna är för långa.
Använd en droppe epoxy i skruvhålet om skruven verkar lös.

Use four screws (13mm x 4,8mm) and four washers for the mounting plate. Most likely you will need to pre drill a
few holes for them. If you do, don’t drill too deep.

Använd fyra skruvar (13mm x 4,8mm) och fyra brickor till monteringsplattan. Troligtvis behöver
du förborra för dem och isåfall borra inte för djupt.

Insert the two 24mm snap-in buttons. If they seem loose, make them a bit thicker with some electrical tape.

Turn the board over and install the dust washer and the ball top.

Place the USB encoder near the buttons and use two (12mm x 2,5mm) screws to fasten it to the board.
Connect the joystick cable.

Insert all the 28mm buttons and screw on the nuts.

Connect all the buttons to the USB encoder according to the instructions for it.

With the box cutter, cut the glueline near the edges of box.

Cut o the remainder of the thin nails.
Tip: Cut inside a transparent plastic bag to avoid getting sharp pieces everywhere.

Press out the bottom plate from the inside of the box to seperate it completely from the sides.
Put the bottom plate aside for now. Tip: Place your foot on the bottom plate, grab the sides and pull up!

Drill two holes through all pieces with a 3mm drill. Use the countersink on the holes.

Place the bottomless box centered over the controller board.

Remember that piece that was left aside in 3g? This will come handy now. Place the controller board on it.

Drill a 4-5mm hole as close to the edge as possible in the middle of the longside of the bottomless box. Sand it.
Check that the USB cable t the hole. If not, make the hole larger.

Borra ett 4-5mm hål så nära kanten som möjlig, mitt på den bottenlösa lådans långsida. Slipa hålet.
Kolla att USB kabeln passar i hålet. Om inte, gör hålet större.

Place the four pieces as shown in the picture and fasten them with eight (20mm x 3,5mm) screws.
The screws should just insert the board with a few millimeters.

Secure the USB cable. It should stay in place if you push it down between two nuts.

Run the USB cable through the long side and connect it to the encoder .

Drill 3mm holes for the screws. Deep enough to insert the 5cm pieces.

Set upright and hold the board and the sides together. Mark with the pencil, the placement for the screws that attaches the
5cm pieces. Repeat on opposite side.

Fasten the (20mm x 3,5mm) screws.

Thread the cord through both screw holes and tie a double knot on the back (inside of the box).

Nearly nished! Take the bottom plate and the cord.

Push the bottom plate in place. Just pull the cord if you need to remove the bottom plate.
