lead to death!
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs of carbon mon-
oxide poisoning resemble the fl u, with headaches, dizziness or nausea. If you have these signs, the fi replace may not be working properly. Get fresh air at once! Have fi replace ser- viced. Some people are more affected by carbon monoxide than others. These include pregnant women, people with heart or lung disease or anemia, those under the infl uence of alcohol and those at high altitudes.
Natural and Propane/LP agent is added to these gases. The odor helps you detect a gas leak. However, the odor added to the gas can fade. Gas may be present even though no odor exists.

VENTING SPECIFICATIONS FOR INSTALLATION
The fi replace chimney fl ue and vent must be drafting properly. To check the vent for proper drafting: Light a tightly rolled newspaper on one end and place it at the inside front edge of the fi replace. Observe the smoke and be sure the vent is properly drawing it up the chimney . If the smoke spills out into the room, extinguish the fl ame and remove any obstruction until proper venting is achieved.
The chimney fl ue must remain open as shown in the chart above at all times during the operation of this log set.
For Massachusetts Residents Only
Installation of this vented gas log set in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires the damper be permanently removed or welded in the fully open position.
INSTALLING DAMPER CLAMP
Secure the damper stop clamp provided to the leading edge of the damper as shown in Figure 2. If for any reason this clamp doesn't work on your fi replace, another suitable clamp or permanent stop must be installed, or the damper blade must be cut or removed.

Before installing appliance, make sure you have the items listed below.
• external regulator (supplied by installer)
• piping (check local codes)
• sealant (resistant to propane/LP gas)
• equipment shutoff valve *

• test gauge connection *
• sediment trap
• tee joint
• pipe wrench
• approved fl exible gas line with gas connector (if allowed by local codes) (not provided
* An equipment shutoff valve with 1/8" NPT tap is an acceptable alternative to test gauge connection. Purchase the optional equipment shutoff valve from your dealer.
For propane/LP units, the installer must supply an external regulator. The external regulator will reduce incoming gas pressure. Y ou must reduce incoming gas pressure to between 1 1" and 14" of water . If you do not reduce incoming gas pressure, appliance regulator damage could occur. Install external regulator with the vent pointing down as shown in Figure 10. Pointing the vent down protects it from freezing rain or sleet.

INSTALLATION
Continued
We recommend that you install a sediment trap in supply line as shown in Figure 1 1, page 7. Locate sediment trap where it is within reach for cleaning. Install in piping system between fuel supply and appliance. Locate sediment trap where trapped matter is not likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps moisture and contaminants. This keeps them from going into appliance controls. If sediment trap is not installed or is installed wrong, appliance may not run properly.
CAUTION: Avoid damage to gas control.
Hold gas control with wrench when connecting it to gas piping and/or fi ttings.
CHECKING GAS CONNECTIONS
3. Check all joints from gas meter to equipment shutoff valve for natural gas or propane/LP supply to equipment shutoff valve for propane/LP (see Figure 13 or Figure 14). Apply noncorrosive leak detection fl uid to all joints. Bubbles forming show a leak.
4. Correct all leaks at once.

PRESSURE TESTING GAS SUPPLY PIPING SYSTEM Test Pressures In Excess Of 1/2 PSIG (3.5 kPa)
1. Disconnect appliance with its appliance main gas valve (control valve) and equipment shutoff valve from gas supply piping system. Pressures in excess of 1/2 psig will damage appliance regulator.
2. Cap off open end of gas pipe where equipment shutoff valve was connected.
3. Pressurize supply piping system by either opening propane/LP supply tank valve for propane/LP gas or opening main gas valve located on or near gas meter for natural gas or using compressed air.
4. Check all joints of gas supply piping system. Apply noncorrosive leak detection fl uid to all joints. Bubbles forming show a leak.
5. Correct all leaks at once.
6. Reconnect appliance and equipment shutoff valve to gas supply. Check reconnected fi ttings for leaks.
Test Pressures Equal To or Less Than 1/2 PSIG (3.5 kPa)
1. Close equipment shutoff valve (see Figure 12).
2. Pressurize supply piping system by either opening propane/LP supply tank valve for propane/LP gas or opening main gas valve located on or near gas meter for natural gas or using compressed air.

ADDING PAN MATERIAL
Two pan materials are included with the MFEB. Lava rock, small grey/black rock is for use on the burner pan for outdoor applications. Vermiculite, light tan - lightweight material, is
f i r e - p a r t s . c o m
for use on the burner pan for indoor applications. Apply the material for your application on the burner pan by spreading it evenly across the burner pan so that it is level with the edges of the burner pan and covers the round, tubular burner.
ADDING EMBER MATERIAL (INDOORS ONLY)
Two ember materials are included with the MFEB. Apply rock wool glowing embers by spreading a 1/2 inch layer of rock wool on top of the pan material. Pull any clumps apart so that the fl ames will pass through the pieces. Apply Plati- num Bright Embers by placing the pieces randomly over the rock wool.

MFEB TROUBLESHOOTING
WARNING: Turn off log set and let cool before servicing. Only a qualifi ed service person should service and
repair log set.
Note: All troubleshooting items are listed in order of operation. Note: Also see troubleshooting section of your burner system's instruction manual.
OBSERVED PROBLEM
Log set is smoking/sooting excessively
(Note: It is natural and unavoidable for vented gas log sets to produce moderate levels of carbon (soot) where fl ames contact the logs. This is especially true with propane/LP gas.)
Burner is excessively noisy
(Note: The movement and combustion of gas will create low, unavoidable levels of noise.)
Burner fl ame is too low or too high
f i r e - p a r t s . c o m
POSSIBLE CAUSE
1. Poor fuel quality
2. Fireplace venting system not drafting properly
3. Improper fuel/air mixture
4. Excessive gas supply/pressure
1. Passage of air/gas across irregular surfaces
1. Incorrect gas supply or pressure
2. Blocked burner orifice or burner manifold ports
3. Improper burner orifi ce size
REMEDY
1. Contact local natural or propane/LP gas company
2. Adjust damper wide open and/or have fi replace and venting profes- sionally cleaned and checked
3. Remove any foreign items from the ame pattern and/or check for proper orifi ce sizing
4. Preheat fl ue in very cold weather
1. Relieve any tight bends or kinks in gas supply line
1. Check for proper gas supply pressure
2. Free burner orifi ce and manifold ports of any burrs, paint, or other blockage
3. V erify proper burner orifi ce sizing (see Figure 1, page 5)
WARNING: If you smell gas
• Shut off gas supply.
• Do not try to light any appliance.
• Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.
• Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
• If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fi re department.
IMPORTANT: Operating appliance where impurities in air exist may create odors. Cleaning supplies, paint, paint remover, cigarette smoke, cements and glues, new carpet or textiles, etc., create fumes. These fumes may mix with combustion air and create odors. These odors will disappear over time.
